The Pig at Combe, Near Honiton, Devon - Explore & Book

"This is a celebration of old meets new. A Grade 1-listed Elizabethan manor house re-imagined as a shabby-chic hotel. A grand entrance hall that's now home to a relaxed bar area with a crackling fire, imaginative cocktail infusions and a wall of mismatched glasses. Faux-antique mirrors hiding smart TVs. Roll-top baths paired with waffle dressing gowns. Original panelling and stucco ceilings alongside terracotta pots of herbs. A former potting shed offering hot-stone massages. And the biggest luxury, that spans both eras? Being thoroughly looked after. Formerly Combe House, this is the latest brainchild from Robin Hutson, joining The Pig and The Pig near Bath, 2 of our favourite hotels. As with those, each revamp detail here was dreamt up by Judy, Robin's wife - antique furniture sourced from French brocantes, paired with rose-red sofas and muted hues of sage and grey. Though there are trademark Pig details (vintage crockery on bare wood tables in the conservatory-feel restaurant; an incredible kitchen garden, whose produce drives the daily menu), nothing has been duplicated exactly; everything is original and extraordinary. As for the setting, it's as beautiful as could be. Arabian horses gallop around the surrounding fields, which unfold into 3,500 acres of fresh green Devon countryside. Pure rejuvenation for the soul. Highs The ambience: calm slips over you the moment you arrive Superb gastro food: pollock lollipops with salsa verde, glazed Featherblade steak, then a gin jelly softened by cucumber sorbet - we wished we'd stayed another night to sample more of the breakfast menu, too The bar team really knows its stuff; the whisky sommelier couldn't have been more useful Bikes and Hunter wellies for exploring the countryside - or drive to beaches and historic towns Clever pricing, which offers something for everyone. There are luxury Hideaways and champagne cocktails, or Snug rooms and a garden pizzeria Lows Super popular so you'll need to book well in advance (2-3 months for weekends) and there's a 2-night min stay over a Fri and Sat Breakfast is only included in the dinner, bed and breakfast rate Other restaurants are a drive away A swimming pool would be the icing on the cake (do I sound spoilt?)" - Liz Simpson

What a lovely weekend we had celebrating the BIG birthday of one of our young friends! We were blessed with the weather which added to the beauty of the building. This is my favourite Pig so far - there are plenty of different places to congregate on comfy seats around the fire. The staff without exception were friendly welcoming and helpful. The rooms are very comfortable and the shower is to die for - the best ever for power and heat. Like every Pig it is expensive but very worth while for a luxury treat.

We had an excellent and truly memorable stay recently, in a Comfy luxe room for 3 nights. Our room (#2) was spacious, with a comfortable superking bed, small sitting area and overlooked the side of the hotel. The bathroom had a very large shower plus a roll top bath; the toilet was separate. It was very quiet with a beautiful view. We ate in the restaurant on 2 of the 3 evenings and found the food and service excellent. Breakfast was equally good with a very extensive buffet plus a wide choice of cooked items. |The reception staff were outstanding ; even going as far as providing piggy shortbread when I said I was disappointed with the afternoon tea cakes selection. |Only one note of caution- as others have mentioned, the country lanes to the estate are narrow and quite potholed. But that’s hardly the hotels fault! Our 4th Pig hotel and hopefully we’ll be back soon.

We stayed for a two night midweek stay break last week. Having been to The Pig several times before we were anticipating a good break. The setting and hotel are exceptional in quality and style, but unfortunately that’s where the good points stop. The heating in our room was not working, and we were provided with electric heaters for the first night and the heating was fixed the following day. We subsequently went to the bar for an early evening drink and had to wait an inordinate amount of time to get any service. My wife’s main course of skate wings at dinner was inedible and had to be returned. The menu is very expensive and the quality of the food did not reflect the exorbitant prices. The meal and service was very much improved the second evening, however was that due to a celebrity chef being in the dining room? Over the years we have enjoyed our stays at the Pig, but now feel that they are resting on their laurels.

The best service I think I have ever experienced. ||From arrival to departure, staff were attentive, polite, interested, knowledgeable and friendly. ||Nothing was too much trouble, we were there spending a voucher we’d been bought for our recent wedding, every member of staff we encountered congratulated us, which I thought was a lovely touch. ||We really were made to feel very special, and utterly delighted to receive an incredible room upgrade to ‘The Horsebox’ room, quite possibly, the most unique room I have ever stayed in. ||The food was amazing, and the place itself is spectacular. My one regret, is that we were only there for the one night on a flying visit between other stops, but I can’t wait to go back again!

Fantastic one night stay - we stayed in a room in the stable yard, converted stables/ stalls, super comfy bed. Delicious food in the restaurant in the evening, and lovely fresh breakfast options - great range of unusual seasonal fresh juices. Just all round super chilled vibes- definitely recommend. Great service from everyone from checking in, dinner to checking out the next day (which is unfortunately harder to find nowadays)

This a truly beautiful hotel. Our room was perfect, the bed large and comfortable. The service was excellent. However we found the food underwhelming and not up to the standard we would have expected. The menu did not really appeal. There was nothing that really made you go wow! Our food was ok but nothing special and considering the prices should have been much better. Breakfast was good. A little disappointed as we were expecting great things.

Stayed for 2 nights in the Horse Box room in the old stables area. Was very quirky and a lovely big space with a separate sitting area. All staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We ate in the restaurant on one evening which was good and breakfast both mornings was excellent. Our first time with the Pig brand and we definitely will try some of the others based on this experience.

Amazing stay. Thank you to will and team for looking after me so well. Treatment, accommodation, service, and food all excellent. When checking the time for check out this morning, the woman on reception kindly said I could stay another two hours. Enough time to enjoy another outdoor bath! Two years into my tradition of a solo trip before Christmas, I can’t wait for my trip next year.

Yelp
Went again last week, place, service and ambience was still brilliant, however the meals we chose were both great and tasty we both struggled to order, we found that the menu wasn't that meat friendly!! More vegetarian options and it for what it was was pricey seeing though they grow it in their own gardens. Would still recommend going as a special occasion but save up first!!

Yelp
Another absolute gem for the Pig franchise and the newest addition to the chain of Pig hotels. Having already stayed at the Pig near Bath and loved it so much we were worried that the newest Pig might not live up to our high expectations but it did not disappoint. We were lucky to get a comfy luxe room in the converted stable yard away from the main house. The conversion has been done beautifully, keeping quirky details from the original stables the rooms surround a beautiful peaceful courtyard which we very much enjoyed sitting in enjoying a cup of tea. The room was also gorgeous with a four poster bed, SMEG fridge, Nespresso machine, fully stocked (albeit pricey) larder and the most incredible monsoon shower. All of the Pigs operate a 25 mile menu, meaning that they grow and source all of the food served within a 25 mile radius. The gardens where they grow herbs, fruits and vegetables can all be explored by guests and are truly beautiful, I found something I just had to take a picture of around every corner! The food we had was all excellent, breakfast, lunch and dinner! I am also obsessed with the applemint mocktail, so refreshing! The service and attention to detail really was amazing, they were aware of and remembered each time I ordered that I had a dairy allergy and always helpful in amending items on the menu for me. When I was too unwell one morning to make it to breakfast but they hadn't yet started serving lunch one of the members of staff kindly found us some complimentary tea and cakes to munch on. We were also super happy when room service restocked the in room tea bags that they put in extra of the type we had been using. Finally don't go and not take advantage of the potting shed treatment rooms, two sheds have been transformed into quirky treatment rooms where we both enjoyed the most luxurious full body massages. In my opinion the Pigs are somewhere you can just relax as soon as you check in, knowing that you are in capable hands. They are a little pricey and admittedly the majority of the cars in the car park were a collection of very fancy Land Rovers and Convertibles but the staff and service weren't pretentious or stuffy at all. The whole vibe allowed us to relax in an absolutely beautiful setting and the service was fabulous. If you could please consider opening one East of the M25 that would be much appreciated!
