The Pig in the Cotswolds Review Hotels Above Par

"Set in a classic Cotswolds manor originally known as Barnsley House and once home to garden designer Rosemary Verey, this characterful country retreat blends boho-chic interiors with quintessential English manor architecture. The rooms and suites favor earthy tones and garden-inspired florals, with roomy tubs and pasture views; the Secret Garden suite is a standout, offering vast space, a four-poster bed, an emerald couch, a grand bath stocked with Bramley products, a double shower and an outdoor hot tub ideal for sunset. Interiors are homely and slightly eccentric—floral wallpapers, exposed beams, vintage furniture, overflowing bookshelves, rugs, crystal lamps and walls hung with prints and watercolours—while the overall vibe attracts a stylish, “Kensington-in-a-field” crowd yet still feels green and restorative. Food is hearty, seasonal and refreshingly simple: the hotel operates to B-Corp sourcing within a 30-mile radius and grows many of its own herbs and greens, with menus that change according to what’s available (examples included a clementine-infused mozzarella starter and a pot roast chicken with red wine jus and triple-cooked fries); breakfasts are plentiful with full English options and a large buffet. Spa facilities in the Fieldhouse include a hydrotherapy pool and a relaxation room showcasing easels by long-time collaborator Natasha Klutterbuck. Staff are frequently singled out for warm, attentive service, and practical details include 24 rooms, on-site restaurant and bar, prices from about USD 438 per night (seasonal), easy rail access via Paddington to Kemble and the nearest international airport being London Heathrow."

I sent the below back in August after a stay. I did it privately allowing them the opportunity to respond, but over three months later they haven’t: My wife and I stayed with you for a couple of nights last weekend. Overall, as we have at every other Pig we’ve stayed at, we had a good time. There were a couple of incidents, however, that felt us being a bit let down. - My wife was gifted a voucher by my parents earlier this year. We put it towards a massage my wife had on Monday. For some reason - I assume because the price has gone up at some stage since the voucher was purchased - we were charged an extra £5 at checkout for the treatment. This was pretty petty to include on the bill. - At dinner on our first night (where we were celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary) we ordered a scotch egg for starter and a mozzarella dish, these arrived at which point the waitress said the chef had dropped half of the scotch egg it on the floor. Instead of preparing a new one, or offering an alternative dish if they had run out, the waitress said she would only charge us 50%, which is rather inexplicable and we were neither happy about having 1/4 of a scotch egg each nor paying 50% for it. - Same dinner, I ordered two scoops of sorbet for dessert. I only got one, but we were charged for two. All relatively minor incidents and any one of them we would likely ignore, but for all to happen was well below the standards we expect from a Pig hotel.

We visited for a birthday dinner. We could only get an early reservation (6pm) and when we arrived (at 5.50pm) we weren’t offered a drink in the bar but taken straight to our table. The first two courses were incredibly rushed - we chose a scallop starter that was served cold and came within 10 minutes of sitting down followed almost immediately our plates were removed by our main course. We had to ask the waiter to slow down our pudding course otherwise we would have been out before 7pm. ||The service is friendly but not particularly polished. Lot’s of very young staff who don’t seem to have had much training. ||The food was dissappointing - average really for a hefty price (over £100 per head with only 3 glasses of wine). ||I was also left wondering about the validity of the 25 mile menu. Several fish items were included whereas Cirencester is pretty landlocked. I would guess 70-80 miles to the nearest seaside. ||Probably won’t go again. There are nicer, cheaper and more relaxed places locally.

Went for an evening meal. Sat down and service very prompt. Staff appeared quickly and helpful. Starter arrived in a few minutes. Main quickly after. Then it slowed. Main plates remained in front of us for 30 mins. During which time we'd decided we'd had enough and decided to leave. As we left a plate of sweets arrived for the birthday treat. In all it was Okay. Maybe I'd built it up to much.

An excellent experience - we stayed for weekend in the Village pub and used spa and eat at the main Pig premises. The village pub has a nice wintery homely vibe and the rooms were excellent in appearance and comfort. We ate at both venues and the food was very good in both. The outstanding thing about both venues was the superb service - careful and attentive with really lovely staff. Beautiful setting and nice walks around about - cant fault it - well done to all the staff

We stayed at the Village Pub and came to the PIG both nights for dinner. The second night was unplanned, but the food was just so good the first night that we couldn’t help but come back. The staff were more than accommodating finding us a table even though we hadn’t booked. The food was absolutely delicious, excellent cocktails and lovely staff. We’re already researching our next trip to one of the PIG hotels.

We stayed across the road at The Pub, which I'd highly recommend. Dinner was booked at The Pig, an easy meander just up the road. We arrived to enjoy a cocktail before dinner in the lovely bar area. The team was really lovely and so friendly. We headed in for dinner, which was okay. The wine selection was vast, beers less so. Having been to quite a few of The Pigs, where I've always been bowled over by the standard of dining experience, you could say my expectations were high. The meal didn't quite live up to that expectation. It was nice food and well cooked, but in comparison to other meals I've enjoyed, this one was just okay and for what it was I thought quite overpriced. Also, the fire was on July, which was ridiculously hot! Apparently, it's Pig policy and for atmosphere... the atmosphere was a sauna, I felt sorry for staff as they seamlessly choreographed their way around guests. Great service, spectacular grounds, delicious cocktails, food a little underwhelming.

This was a fantastic getaway for our wedding anniversary. The location is ideal for visiting the Cotswolds with Cirencester Only a few miles away but why travel when you can relax in the beautiful gardens. The staff were attentive while we were in the gardens. The room was spectacular and really well equipped. The bed was comfortable. We had dinner at the restaurant which was superb and the staff were very friendly and attentive but relaxed. Breakfast was also very good and different to most hotels Overall a wonderful experience

I had high expectations for our stay at the Pig, however it disappointed where possible and I would most certainly not recommend it given the price they charge.|Room: we stayed at one of the stableyeard rooms. The room was freezing when we arrived and even turning it aircon all the way to 26 degrees did absolutely nothing. Cleanliness was lacking, certainly the floor could have very much done with a mop and the mattress of the bed was very worn and one could very much feel the springs coming through. |Restaurant: the dinner was ok, starters were lacking again but the chateaubriand was wonderful. However, I have never ever sat in such uncomfortable chairs- they are old and wooden and simply leaning back ended up pulling a thread of a brand new £300 cardigan. Not acceptable. The breakfast was shocking. The poached eggs came hard boiled on burnt bread. We tried to make the staff aware of it but there were none to be seen for over an hour so we ended up leaving the premises altogether.|Potting Shed: we opted for a bespoke massage and whilst my partner enjoyed his, my experience was the opposite. The therapist was coughing throughout the treatment, and the actual massage technique abrupt, I left feeling more stressed than when I arrived. Overall I could believe that the total of our 1 night stay came to £1000 given the disappointing experience we’ve had. Would have much rather invested the money to go abroad.
