THE PIG-in the South Downs

Fabulous retreat, beatifully understated and peaceful. Food was lovely, tasty but not over the top. I would describe it a "earthy" (in a good way). I was surprised to see a hazy IPA beer on the menu and it made my evening as it was a tremendous one. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We stayed in a cabin/wagon which was so wonderfully peaceful and very luxurious with a fantastic outdoor (and indoor) proper rain shower with huge flow so really lived upto the name. Breakfast was very high quality with the same wonderful ingredients and attention to detail as dinner. The main house has a great view over a secluded valley. You feel like you have left the rat race for a while. We left so relaxed and peaceful and plan to return. Great for a romantic get away. Highly recommended!

I rarely write reviews, but The Pig was such a special night away, I’m still smiling 10 days later. The house & gardens are beautiful throughout. From the very beginning we felt very well looked after, and I am very impressed by the casual yet highly attentive approach. Dining experience was 10/10, the comfortable dining room served brilliantly by the kitchen’s extensive onsite garden and vineyard. The shepherds hut was very well appointed and the outdoor shower superb! Great wine list, good cocktails and excellent service all round. Love it.

We were given a voucher for our silver wedding anniversary to go to a Pig Hotel and we chose to go to the one at Arundel. I can honestly say (and this is rare) that there was nothing about the whole stay that disappointed, even including our drive to get there (which I realise is not within the remit of the Pig!).||Our welcome on arrival was friendly, welcoming and relaxed. That set the tone. It felt as if we were friends arriving to stay rather than paying guests. We had a surprising upgrade to the Apple Store and what a stunning, peaceful and private place that proved to be. It was warm, simply and tastefully decorated, had a luxurious bathroom, and when we were able to view its own external charms in the daylight, located in the most amazing walled kitchen garden. We even had a fabulous good morning welcome from Boots, a neighbourly ginger tom.||We went to the bar before dinner and enjoyed a couple of cocktails in a bar that has definite style and class (or should I say, glass). Food was superb. The sprout salad was unusual and delicious, the scallops my husband enjoyed were the best he has eaten in a very long time, and we both enjoyed venison loin that was melt in the mouth. We received a large and delicious complimentary glass of bubbles and petit fours that were unexpected and personalised with a 'happy anniversary' message in chocolate. Breakfast, my personal favourite meal, was superb with an excellent range and choice. We were not rushed or made to feel at any time that we needed to leave. The views from the dining room are stunning.||There were many staff both at dinner and breakfast, but all staff were friendly, welcoming, unobtrusive, and there just when needed. ||The Pig is not cheap but worth every penny if you are looking for a truly relaxing and pampered get away from the madness of the world. Loved our stay here and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

I guess the service standards must fluctuate wildly, given all the reviews. It was good for our visit. The location is delightful and on the right weather day the comfort in the restaurant is great. Given it is a vast conservatory not sure how it would be on a hot sunny day. Food wise, nothing exceptional, not fine dining, but very nice - as you would expect given the prices! Wines are dreadfully overpriced. Oh, and whilst I'll usually pay it, I do not like the default 12.5% service charge. In total about £150 for two - two courses and half litre of "house" wine - their cheapest at just over £30! Too much really. We will not be going to the Pig again in a hurry. Eating out is interesting in a way, as we have just had fish and chips and a glass of wine in O'Neills for £9.95 each!

I booked lunch here as a birthday treat fro my husband.The atmosphere and location were great. However, there are a couple of things that made it a disappointing visit for us. The first is that on arrival at the restaurant, 3 members of staff passed us waiting in the hall without acknowledging our presence. Once we were seated, we were offered water for the table which never arrived. I had to requested it two more times before it was brought over. The restaurant was not busy and most tables had already been seated and served. One of the server's had a ripped shirt which I was surprised wasn't addressed in the time that we were there. We also found that some of the food didn't have much flavour - I had the beetroot carpaccio starter and struggled to taste anything but the onion which covered the dish. We ordered the steak to share (a proper treat for us and the most expensive thing we've ever eaten!) which was cooked really well and I can't fault to be honest. It came with a Chimichurri sauce (my husband's favourite). Chimichurri should pack a punch of flavour, but this was pretty flavourless (apart from the onion, again) and though I flagged it with the waitress, there was no recourse or further follow up. We walked away disappointed in our experience and a couple of hundred quid down.

The Pig group is a great favourite of our family as we can only say how great they are in every way. BUT this pig in the South Downs went the extra mile . The staff were amazing. Martina and Izzy and all the bar and restaurant staff worked tirelessly to make sure we and all the other guests were having the best time. Everyone from the ground crew, room staff and maintenance crew were engaging making our weekend celebration one of the best. We will be back as we had one member of our family otherwise engaged and she will love this wonderful place . Thankyou to one and all from the family Dunn

The kitchen gardens are interesting, and the setting is lovely. The food was OK. - Not gourmet; just good pub' level. The service was abysmal though... We asked many times for the ordered wine and it only arrived just as we finished our main course. The wine list is a joke. Extensive, expensive, and unnecessarily complex in arrangement. I tried to find a Rioja. They had two. One for £100 was 2yrs old (ie Not really ready for drinking), and the other 5yrs old but £200. This was the cheap end of the list... - Expect to be paying several hundred upwards for a good bottle with your meal. I am sure this place does very well, judging by the Maseratis and Ferraris in the carpark. A nouveau-riche destination.

Dining at The Pig in the South Downs was an absolute treat. The setting is beautiful — rustic yet elegant, with a relaxed countryside charm. The staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive, making the whole experience feel welcoming and special. The food was outstanding: fresh, seasonal, and full of flavor, with many ingredients sourced straight from the kitchen garden. Every dish felt thoughtful and perfectly balanced. The wine list was excellent too, with some great English options that paired beautifully with the menu. It’s rare to find a restaurant that combines such a gorgeous setting, genuine hospitality, and consistently delicious food. Highly recommend for anyone visiting the South Downs — it’s a place you’ll want to return to again and again
