The location is amazing! We were only staying one night so I wanted to be able to park and walk everywhere and this place was perfect for that. The staff was super friendly to us and I really liked that my whole family could stay in one room together. Would definitely stay here again!

This was our second stay. If you are looking for luxury, this isn’t the place for you, but if you love old historic buildings, a fun and relaxed atmosphere, and amazing people, then this is your place! We love that each room is painted with a different theme. We were in the rain forest this last time. The building is old and creaks, but that just adds to the character of the place! Pancakes are served each morning if you request them, but we have never taken advantage of the service. We love that it is downtown and right off the main road so you can walk to most everything. We stayed in one of the smaller rooms, but it has a king bed and a bunk bed so could easily accommodate a family of 4. The front door opens up into a large staircase and all the rooms are upstairs, so I would not recommend if you have trouble navigating stairs. We will definitely stay here again!

My girlfriend and I stayed here for two nights and couldn’t have had a better time. Dawn met both of us separately as we arrived and helped us bring everything to our room. We had a very cute room. Every room is decorated differently and very interesting decor. Dawn was very helpful recommending places to go. She cooked us breakfast pancakes she made with our names on them. So cute and thoughtful. This hotel is charming and located in the middle of everything you want to do within walking distance. I recommend staying here when visiting St. Augustine.

Google
Worst hotel I've ever seen. Expensive, yet cheap towels, no heat, no noise (not even talking) after 9pm. I've stayed in better hotels in 3rd world countries. No TV, no telephone in room, they advertise breakfast, but only if you sign up for pancakes the night before

We enjoyed our stay here! The hospitality is amazing and our little loved her pancake and how kiddo friendly this place is. Location is great especially with kids, there’s not much of a walk to the main strip! We will definitely be returning 🤍

Google
Definitely an interesting place to stay. It's literally right in the middle of the St Augustine historic district. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, the room was clean with plenty of places to sleep. I believe it would have accommodated eight people. My only suggestions would be to upgrade the Wi-Fi and to add smart televisions in the rooms. They do have kind of a rec area at the end of the hall with a television, but it would be nice to have something in your room when you're traveling by yourself. Overall it was a good experience.

Google
Very fun pirate-themed, family-friendly bed & breakfast hotel with very spacious rooms. The bed was very comfortable, my husband and I slept great! The woman running the place was very personable and friendly, and she makes great pancakes, which are included in your stay. There was a family there celebrating their kid’s 13th birthday and she made special birthday pancakes for them as well!

I recently had the pleasure of staying at a unique pirate-themed hostel managed by the ever-so-welcoming Jenny, and it was nothing short of a fantastic adventure! From the moment I stepped in, I was transported into a world of high seas and treasure hunts, complete with maritime decor and an incredibly friendly atmosphere. Jenny, the proprietor, makes everyone feel like part of the crew. She’s not only warm and inviting but also full of tips and stories that add to the authentic pirate ambiance. You can tell she pours her heart into the hostel, making it a special place for travelers from all walks of life. The highlight of the mornings was undoubtedly the complimentary pancake breakfast. If you’re looking for a place with character, comfort, and a fantastic host, then the pirates Haus hostel is the treasure you seek.

Yelp
Cool! It's a nice hotel for the price, and very good location where you can walk everywhere. The lady helped us parked, and was super sweet with us. She even helped us parked when we left. The breakfast is fun, but It's only pancakes so with butter or syrup which doesn't really fill you up. Great option if you need somewhere to stay! Staff is super sweet, Room has a cool theme and a sound monitor for white noise and rains which was very relaxing. Only thing is I wish there was more breakfast options.

Yelp
Hans was a great welcome to our stay--so charming and funny. The place has lots of character and you really get to know the history behind it through the decorations and the interactions with staff. Rooms are clean and you can really tell they've taken care of the place--however there are no three-pronged outlets, so bring your two-pronged ones! Pancakes were excellent and coffee is too--Hans' signature Colombian mix is super tasty! Overall the Pirate Haus Inn is reliable and well-taken care of as well as a fun, quirky place to add character to your St. Augustine adventures!

Yelp
What a great place to stay right in the heart of St. Augustine! You may want to read about the intricacies of the Pirate Haus before you book, just so there are no surprises. My wife and I loved everything about the place! Hans (manager) was so pleasant and accommodating. Very fun, yet very professional personality! Her staff that I met, were very kind and friendly also! Our room was great. Nice sized fridge, bathroom was fine, the king-size bed and pillows were comfy, and the price is unbeatable. And the complimentary morning Pirate ‍ Pancakes and coffee were truly amazing!! If you are up for a unique and wonderful experience, treat yourself to a room at the Pirate Haus!!

Yelp
For a family of 6 this place was amazing! My grandkids had so much fun here. The personalized pancakes in the morning were a great touch the grandkids loved them. Perfectly located so you can park your car at checkin and never have to move it till you check out. Everything is within walking distance. The hostess was exceptional and made us feel welcome.

Yelp
This place is NOT CLOSED!!! We stayed hear last night! So quirky and a cool place to stay. Room had a King size bed and a set of bunks. The host when we checked in was a super friendly French lady who gave us a tour and pulled out a map and highlight all of the must see places and restaurants. Then in the morning, The owner Conrad is a traditional old school Inn Keeper and he cooked us a wonderful Pancake Cake breakfast with our names in the pancakes. Customer Service is impeccable!!!! Our bed was comfy and very clean. Highly recommend! Other rooms had more bunks plus the big bed. Great Place for families! Great location in the heart of the historical district!

Yelp
Spent 2 nights here with my daughter, SIL, & grandbabies for my birthday. I thought it was a great place to stay & be able to walk to most of sights we wanted to visit. No tv in the room, so bring entertainment if you require it. We spent so much time walking around in the historic district, we didn't miss having a tv. Also, my grands were thrilled with their breakfast pancakes that included their names. The decor is very pirate-y & looks great. Parking is scarce, so be prepared to park at pay lots a couple of blocks away. This is an older building & the rooms do not have individual AC controls (at least, ours didn't). Luckily, our room included a sizable standing fan, but I'd suggest bringing one with you, just in case. Everyone we encountered was friendly & welcoming, but non-intrusive. We enjoyed the deck patio at the back. Nice view with a lovely breeze! All in all, it was a good place to stay. If we return to St Augustine in the near future, this is where I'd prefer to stay.

Michael R.

Yelp
It is in perfect spot. To have walking access to everything in historic st Augustin. Only flaw we had was when owner heard I was retired military. He asked questions all day every day about my time in service. It got to point of interrogation. The cost is low,he makes you really nice breakfast, location is perfect. The interrogation and rude comments on time in service is major turn off. Other military members we know had similar experiences.

Yelp
i love love love pirates haus inn!!! beautiful!! and so close to where you want to be! amazing hospitality!

Yelp
If you're looking for a family friendly, affordable place, in the middle of the city within walking distance of everything... This is it. The people were friendly and the room was roomy. This place was adorable and had such a great theme. It is not the Hilton! Think more like eccentric aunts house. It has amenities available if you need them but there is no TV or phone in the room. However it does have adorable murals. It is not handicap accessible from what I could see so definitely keep that in mind. The building is 100 years old so full of personality. Family went for the night of lights and we were not disappointed. If you're open to a quirky stay, this is the place for you! The only CON is the building is 100 years old. So when staff are moving, unless you sleep like the dead, you're waking up. We were woken at 5:40, 6:20, and finally at 7 we just decided to stay awake. Anytime anyone walked past your door it was impossible to miss.

Amber C.

Yelp
My 3 boys adored staying here. Such a friendly staff and fun theme. We will for sure be back.

Kristi M.

Yelp
This is our second time here and it was just as great as the first. It is an unbeatable price for staying in downtown St. Augustine where you can walk to everything. Parking only costs $10 a day which one again is amazing for downtown. We are a family of six and it can be difficult to find a hotel where I don't have to lie about the number of kids I have so this is great! We stayed in the Captain's Quarters this time which has a king bed and three sets of bunk beds. They have a treasure hunt in that room and my kids loved solving the codes to find their treasure - gold chocolate coins. The manager, Jeff, was amazing - very friendly and tried to help us out whenever he could. Not a fancy, but still clean and comfortable.

Carrie M.

Yelp
Me, my mom, and my 3 year old son stayed there last night. A couple main reasons why I easily gave it 5 stars: 1. Amazing location. It was easy walking distance from all the main sites in town, and I'm not just saying that (we all have that one friend who says something is easy walking distance, 3 miles later you're still walking...yeah I'm definitely not that person). 2. The pirate theme was very present and so fun!! My son kept asking to go back to the "pirate house" throughout the day because he loved playing with the toys and looking at all the pirate decorations. 3. Great staff. At breakfast, it felt like waking up at a new friend's house instead of waking up at a hotel, so the experience was much more personalized. Also, they'll put your name on a pancake. How cool is that?? 4. The price. Nothing was comparable in town. 5. The room set up. We stayed in a family room and loved having bunk beds as an option. I've never seen that before in a bed and breakfast/ hotel. If you're used to high class, brand new hotels, then this place probably isn't for you. But if you appreciate kitschy eclecticism, have a thing for pirates (or want to develop one), and want a more personalized experience, then check this place out. It is my new go-to place to stay in St. Augustine

Chris M.

Yelp
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Pirate Haus.  While this is a no-frills establishment, our room was clean, the (king-size!) bed was comfortable, and the pirate motif was fun. We especially enjoyed meeting the new owner, Jenny, who cooked us personalized pancakes every morning, and a very nice Mom and two of her children with whom we shared the breakfast table.  If we find ourselves back in St. Augustine, we would definitely stay here again.  Check out the nearby Chianti Room (part of PizzAlley's) for the best Happy Hour in town!!!

Yelp
This is our absolute favorite place to stay in historic downtown St. Augustine, FL. It's right in the middle of everything and conveniently within walking distance to St. George Street. The Pirate Haus Inn is an eclectic style Bed & Breakfast that was once an old boarding house for children. Inside many of the rooms you'll find remnants of this buildings past. If you stay in the Pirate Room, you'll have two extra bunk beds along with the queen. The Fish Room is our favorite; as it has plenty of room, a futon sofa and a mini refrigerator. In fact, many of the rooms, if not all, offer a mini refrigerator. Save your ice for the day trips and coolers. The mornings at the Pirate Haus are a delight. Conrad, the Haus' owner, is a "Mistro" when it comes to pancakes. He's happy to cook any bacon or sausage you provide, but don't rob yourself of the experience of these epic pancakes topped with "Rumbunny" syrup. That was a favorite of mine. The Pirate Haus Inn is sure to impress anyone. It's a little gem that's not 5 star, but the experience, location and price make this little treasure a favorite destination of ours. You won't be disappointed if you're looking for a great place to stay without breaking the bank in St. Augustine. Many of the other hotels in the area around this price are sub par when compared to the Pirate Haus Inn. Ultimately, I recommend this place to anyone looking to stay right in the middle of it all.

Beto E.

Yelp
The Pirate Hous was awesome. We spent a night there with our children, just wanted to get out and take a day trip at the end of January and forget about the current situation of things. We arrived to the amazing scene that is St. Augustine, we wanted to drop our bags and get out onto the streets. The eclectic B&B room was equipped with enough space for 6 people and every room was unique. The fact that is right in the center of it all, makes it very convenient to walk around town without feeling tired after a walk around town, our experience at night was great putting the kids to sleep and having a night cap on the roof top ( two story Bulding) makes it really cool. The owner in the morning made pancakes for our two kids and made it his priority of the day writing their names on each one of there pancakes. He was great with us and was super informative about sightseeing ideas. Definitely visit this place! When writing a review, please keep in mind that this is a difficult time for all of us, especially the hospitality industry, we are all working hard to be safe so please don't try to hurt small businesses with insignificant 1 star reviews whose only propuse is to hurt them just because you didn't get what you expected from the unexpected. Respect and reward hospitality for doing the best that they can like these guys! We will be back.

Bobby S.

Yelp
We found this place last minute. What a fun place! Old building in the heart of Old town. Big room with King bed and two bunk beds. Old claw foot tub in the ensuite bath. Great murals on the walls and lots of funky pirate touches. The hosts Conrad and Fred couldn't be more accommodating. Conrad was dressed in period garb and told us all about the local history over pancake breakfast. Location could not be better. The price was ridiculous $179 for two nights. You won't find a better deal or a more fun place to stay. Free parking.

Nathan B.

Yelp
Fantastic for families!! We stayed with Cap'n Conrad and Crew for 3 nights and loved every moment. From the decor to the pancakes to the game room filled with books and boardgames. The place was quiet, the guests were pleasant, and the price was right! Parking is limited, but that is only because the Pirate Haus Inn is right in the middle of old St. Augustine near the Castillos de San Marcos where the restaurants and shops are. Watch the video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUXThNfkbl8

Andrea E.

Yelp
Captain Conrad made us pirate pancakes and gave us grapefruit his neighbor picked and won our undying affection because of it. The place was comfortable and nice and they had community spaghetti dinner night. There is a cute little libraryish living area and people gathered there and played guitars one of the evenings we were there. I loved the location too - right in the middle of everything. I'm going to Florida for spring break in a month, and I was really pushing for us to go to St. Augustine moooostly because of Pirate Haus...

Robin R.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of staying in a cost conscious , central location, with friendly staff and interesting decor. This place is an incredible value B&B. If you are looking for family friendly sleeping quarters, relaxed atmosphere and yummy pirate pancakes, I highly recommend giving this place a try. It's not fancy but it's not disappointing either.

Randy C.

Yelp
Pirate Haus Inn is a good choice for staying in St Augustine. I really think the key thing is to be able to park your car and for the most part, not drive anywhere in the downtown area. The Inn is very centrally located so almost anything is within a quick walk, and you can just use the car when you want to see the beach, lighthouse, or maybe a great meal at Back 40 Urban grill. Driving to the place is an interesting experience in itself. I was not clear on the parking situation and when we arrived, everywhere was very crowded with no parking. So we called and were told that they would have a parking space for us. $10 a day is great. Driving down Treasury Street is interesting. Good thing we had a small car. The first experience in arriving the staircase. It is both kinda whimsical and scary, it seems pretty steep. Our daily cardio was going up and down this staircase. We got room 6, the Jungle room. It is quaint. As others have said, you come here for different reasons, and if you are looking for a pristine modern place, you should keep looking. This is really more a hostel turned into a quasi-BnB....sort of. :) It certainly retains a feel of a hostel, I would assume more so with the rooms with shared facilities. There is a cute common area with books and games. An outdoor deck with table and chairs, and a kitchen. The place reminded me more of places I have stayed in Europe. Our room had the bunkbeds, perfect for the kids, though we were initially confused by the bedding. There is a refrigerator. Free wifi that worked well. Limited outlets, so if you want to run something on the bunk beds, bring an extension cord. No tv of course. Bathroom is a bit old but still charming. The tap handles on the tub/shower seemed barely attached. But we had plenty of hot water and everything worked. The owners and staff we very friendly. The guy who runs it (Conrad?) seems a great guy with some interesting stories. We also enjoyed meeting people from around the world, and if we were here without the children, I would have liked to have spent more time socializing. Pancakes were good, Conrad enjoys exploring his creative outlet on the griddle. :) If you do not like pancakes, you may be out of luck, but I think they try to be open to working with you if you wanted to make something else. Coffee is available. We did notice some extra free entertainment from people on the street, but it was not too bad and seemed to get pretty quiet later at night. The AC worked well enough to keep the room at a good temp, specially with the ceiling fan.

Sasha S.

Yelp
"Arrr!".... almost. Frenchie and I came here while on our extended roadtrip this summer. It was pretty sweet- even though the owner pirate was having phone company issues when we arrived... we got settled. The guys who live and work there are the chillest bunch I've met in awhile and we would sit in the kitchen drinking our "pirate rum" and talking. Eveyone has got that chill attitude.. that surfer-like chilltude. The best parts? Free pancakes- all you can eat. It's right in the heart of St. Augustine. The worst parts? Fleas.. I think. Something bit and itched- and I've heard there's a lot in Florida. Other than that the place was super sweet... complete with Pirate decor and the "arrr"tastic staff.

Ashley B.

Yelp
Located in the heart of Historic St. Augustine, this Inn definitely has character. You can literally spend hours just examining the miscellaneous pirate paraphernalia randomly displayed on the walls. Three of my girl friends and I shared what is known as the "Jungle Room" and man, that's not just a catchy name. As soon as we opened the door we were greeted with a 360 degree jungle mural. Awesome! The room contained a bunk bed and a double bed. When split four ways, it ended up costing each of us $25 - not bad at all! The website boasts an all you can eat pancake breakfast but us ladies weren't ready in time. Also, shirts are for sale! (No, not ours... the Inn's, of course!) FYI - Although this place has a sort of "hostel" feel, it was made very clear to us that it is a family-friendly inn. The walls are paper thin and saying things like "pissed" will get you a talking to (or maybe the manager just didn't appreciate us). Overall, a great place for a very reasonable price!

Olaf G.

Yelp
We won't stay anywhere else in St Augustine. Super family friendly and nice staff. Love every minute of being there.

David D.

Yelp
Pros: 1. The staff are awesome...friendly, accommodating, funny, and down-to-earth. 2. Family-friendly: quiet times are enforced, staff are great with kids, and place is safe 3. Location is in the heart of the downtown area. You can walk almost to all the major attractions and certainly find great food and fun. 4. Rooms are large 4. Basic essentials are provided 5. Great price 6. Good wifi 7. Hang out room with TV, books, and games exists, but we did not try it out. Neutrals: 1. Looks and feels like a hostel. We had a young child (less than 2) with us, so we were not looking for romance at a B&B. So, no big deal. 2. Pancakes, coffee, and fruit on one of the mornings were all great, but this is all the breakfast is comprised of. Adequate (if you like pancakes), but nothing fancy. Cons: 1. Parking was stated as free on the reservation, but only a few pay spots existed on site and $8/day parking was available across the street (which is pretty cheap for the area). This would have not been brought up, except that our reservation said it would be free. 2. Location is in the heart of the downtown area. (Yes, I already wrote this in the pros section.) Harry's restaurant and bar is located a block away and plays loud music all night. One of the nights we were there, they played until 2am. The windows do not block the sound of the music or the people walking by as they leave the area. With a small child this is not the greatest thing to put up with. The staff tried everything to accommodate us (even called the police), but the reality is that this is the downtown area and the bar is allowed to play loud music until they close. Luckily, Harry's doesn't have music every night. Primarily on the weekends, holidays, and school breaks. So, keep an eye on that and you will be okay. If you do not have young children and/or you don't mind staying up late, then this may be a non-issue.

Cat L.

Yelp
so friendly! We had kids and the bunk bed setup was great. we had access to a tv/play room and pancakes. the parking and location can't be beat. Only issue was the noise outside very late through the night. that may be just some rooms facing corner street where the panhandler/musicians are. we were right downtown, though, so not too surprised but it was busy. happy with our choice!

Debbie S.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. It is exactly what it says it is on their website: "The Pirate Haus Guesthouse is a family friendly Budget Guesthouse in the heart of historic St. Augustine." Emphasis on "family friendly" and "budget." Do not book here if you are expecting luxury or kid-free. But, definitely book here if you want to be in the center of Old Town, walking distance to the Castillo (aka Fort) and lots of restaurants, have your kids in bunk beds in the same room, and all for an incredibly reasonable price. I cannot recommend it highly enough. P.s. They make pancakes every morning and they are works of art!

Michael R.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my stay here. If you make lodging decisions based on carpet and wallpaper, this is not your place. If you want to spend a little less money for something rustic and charming, this place is an unbelievable value. First, I should clarify that I stayed in the inn, not the hostel. The hostel is ideal for four folks traveling together on a budget. The room has a comfy king size bed and a set of bunk beds. I was not thrilled with the water pressure, but it was plenty hot when you needed it. Cold AC during the hot summer. A hostel-style kitchen so you can make your own dinner (please clean up after yourself) and they make you pancakes and coffee in the morning. There are some neat common areas, like the roof patio, which become important because St. Augustine tends to shut down at 8, which can be a little bit of a drag. There are three somewhat cramped parking spots next to the building, the use of which is neither guaranteed nor free. A note about Room 6, the Jungle Room: we were lucky enough to be booked into this room. They apparently hired a fairly talented mural painter to do the room interiors. He or she went crazy on Room 6, and as you go down the hall when they're cleaning, you can see that each room has less and less hand-painted artwork. I felt like I slept in a piece of art. Very cool. If you're on the fence about this lower-rent option, what really sells this place is the location. We bought the trolley tickets, thinking we would use it for transportation, but we didn't need it because we were in an easy walk of more attractions than we could see in the three days we were there. I'm really glad I stayed there and will definitely be back.

Daniel B.

Yelp
Either you're going to like this place or you aren't. Used to staying in five star hotels? Head somewhere else. Are you more laid back and just looking for a place to crash at the end of the day? Take a chance on the Pirate Haus. The rooms were huge, the management was friendly, the beds were comfortable and the price was right. Two friends and I stayed for two nights and enjoyed ourselves. The best part of the Pirate Haus is the location. You're within a five minute walk from everything there is to do in the historic district. Cab rides to the beach were $10 for three of us. I would recommend staying in the historic district and cabbing to the beach, not vice versa. The food in the historic district is delicious, and there isn't too much to do by the beach (except, of course, swim). Management was happy to answer any questions and point us in the right direction for food and drinks. I'd stay here again.

Gabi J.

Yelp
I never stayed at this inn, however I have been inside and I have also experienced the management who owns this establishment and I must say, why go anywhere else, the owner is one of the most laid back but serious guys you will meet. He takes the "Pirate Haus Inn" very serious and it is truly for those who have a pirate in them. It is built in Saint Augustine in the Historic part of the city and this place truly has character. Must warn you though, this place has stairs when you first arrive, it's on the second floor of an establishment, there is a rail that goes up the stairs, so you can take your time to get up the stairs but that is the only way in or out!

Gage B.

Yelp
Our stay was pleasant and very comfortable. The city center and Main Street are a stokes throw away. Definitely recommend.

Philip M.

Yelp
This started as one night stop in St. Augustine. Needed a place to sleep, shower, and back on the road. Compared to other hotels nearby, Pirate's price could not be beat. Are my expectations for this price low? Of course. I got the comfortable sleep I needed and hot shower with great water pressure. My expectations now met, let's talk what else I found at Pirate Haus. You will be hard-pressed to find more friendly and personable hosts, Conrad informed me of local restaurants and sites. His recommendations the first night were perfect both in restaurant choice and in walking tour. The next morning after a "picture worthy" breakfast, we requested to stay a second night. Day two we walked every bit of the primary historic district and as far west as the "Ice Plant". We realized our hotel could not be more perfectly located. The Hilton has the premier water view of all hotels in town. The Pirate Haus is merely 30 steps behind it. Location, Location, Location is the claim of many businesses. Pirate Haus lives up to that claim. We ended up staying FOUR days spending every moment touring this beautiful city. When the day was done, we were always just a short walk from Pirate Haus. After a comfortable sleep and a refreshing shower, wake up to coffee with Conrads pancakes, then get out and experience a truly walkable Historic City. The Pirate Haus family is providing an opportunity for other families to enjoy a vacation experience that would elsewise be limited due to local Hotel rates. They are not offering luxury, but they are by far offering a vacation to be remembered.

Yelp
Spontaneous decision to make a run to St. Augustine led me to find this place in my room search and we couldn't be happier. We never tried a B&B before but the theme sounded cool and the location seemed great. Wow is it. Right in the middle of everything. Seriously, can walk to everything in minutes. Huge room with a king bed and bunk beds. After seeing a ton of St. Augustine and coming back exhausted, the kiddo had a blast playing pirates vs dinosaurs in the common room with the other kids while the parents watched Infinity War. (The dinosaurs won.) The staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful. Yummy pancakes for breakfast with our names on them. My 9 year old, who has been to all the Orlando on property fancy hotels, declared the place her favorite ever and wants to come back for her birthday. If you're coming to St. Augustine, especially with kids (and you should) you have to try The Pirate Haus.

Yelp
Called spoke to owner at @9:00pm quotes us $85.00 for a room. This was a dorm room. We said thanks, but no thanks. He called right back and said he had a room for $20/pp. We had a gps and found it impossible to find this location. There's construction in the side road, its hidden next to a construction site, it was dark and creepy. We had to call to ask for directions again, and the owner came out and spooked us, in the nearby park, still talking on the phone. He told us again how to get there and then poof left. We parked the car and still couldn't find the hidden side road. Now I was getting angry. So we called again! He met us 1/2 way. This hostel has a double flight of stairs. Be forewarned not to bring suitcases. 2 Flights up. I mentioned I had stayed at another hostel which was lovely. The owner gave a brief tour, gave all the paperwork and 1 key to my son who was also staying with me. The room which was not made up, meaning it hadn't been cleaned from the previous guests had 8 dorm bunk beds, ratty, stained and torn carpet, a tiny fridge that was leaking out And ....we only got one key. This has old fashioned lock door meaning if you close it its automatically locks. My son took off to enjoy down town and the door locked behind me. I had asked the owner about the lock and he said, to my horror! That I could leave the door unlocked and he put it so it was not supposed to lock. It of course immediately did when he left. As a woman traveler I cannot recommend this place for mulitple levels. No one was here to help. There is no internet plugs in the sitting room. I was going to stay there all night with 3 other guests, but finally called the owner. After several rings, he answered not even saying it was in fact the # posted to call if there were problems. I said "I'm locked out" He said "what do you want me to do about it?" I said "Should I call the police? "He said why, what are they going to do about it ? I said" I need to get into the room. Are you going to come and open it up." He said call my son and he can come back and open it up! My son, of course was mad that he had to come back. What kind of place is this that doesn't have some staff on til 11pm? Also there is a very old fashioned code lock on the outside of door. God forbid you forget that at night you will be locked out all night. I was lucky I had my phone with me, otherwise I would have had no access to getting in touch with anyone staff or otherwise. As a senior traveler this is not the place I could recommend to anyone. I guess location sells the place and people just don't care what kind of accommodations they have. Oh and if you are a friend of Bill's you will get the gin tour of hot spots in town as if that was THE only thing to do in town. I suggest any other accommodations regardless of the price would be a better deal.

Yelp
We could not have been happier with our stay here! Truly a gem! Such bang for your buck! Comfortable, clean, AND CENTRAL! Right in the heart of St. Augustine!.. We didn't have to drive anywhere during our visit! And cheap parking for the 3 earliest birds! The pancakes are good and the bourboney(sp?) makes them even better! We even had what could be considered a tame, little ghost encounter hehehe. But most importantly the staff was great! SO friendly and SO helpful! Oh and they leave chocalate coins on your pillow :)

Yelp
We stayed 4 nights at the Pirate Haus Inn in March 2013. I enjoyed it. We had the rainforest room. I traveled with my mother and 6 year old daughter. It is not a fancy place, and the stairs could be hard on people with bad knees. But the room was spacious and comfortable. The feeling at this inn is very friendly, if you want to, you can hang out, meet other people, talk with the staff. If you are not into mingling with others, or if you have a "me first" attitude this place is not for you. There was a line up for pancakes every morning we were there. So we hung out, drank coffee and talked. We liked that there were other kids around for my daughter to play with. There is also a quiet time at night, from 10 pm to about 8 am. This is great for families. The location is fantastic, it is in walking distance of everything to do in St. Augustine, except the beach. Free parking is another huge bonus, although some cars will be parked in, which can require some patience and coordination. The down side was the outdoor noise - this room faced the street and since it was spring break there were many drunks roaming the streets and yelling all night. Also cars with thumping bass that rattled the windows. I am not sure if the rooms on the other side of the building might be less prone to street noise. Consider ear plugs. The owner and the staff were generally friendly. The person who checks you in was snarky and it was no pirate act. Maybe it's because I'm from Minnesota but I enjoy genuinely nice people and choose to avoid the attitude.

Yelp
Appreciate the Captain's hospitality and look forward to the chance to give the Haus another chance. All the fundamentals are there for a great experience, location, facilities, fun theme.

Yelp
It's funny to hear the owner (in a post below) comment that their last manager "had some issues". In response to my review on Trip Advisor, he was nothing but defensive of this manager, who clearly had no experience and made for an incredibly disappointing vacation. We stayed there last summer, with our 2 boys. The rooms reeked of phony fragrance (from about 5 Glade plug-ins in one small room) and while it was clean, it is an old building and you get what you get with that. If you are sensitive to smells/mold, etc, it might not be the place for you. The 4 top table in the kitchen area was filled with locals plus the manager's girlfriend. The Inn boasts of a breakfast that I could not enjoy b/c my family and I had no place to sit and wound up going outside. The manager was not even in the kitchen when the breakfast hour began and he had to fuel up on coffee (with aforementioned girlfriend) while my kids tried to be patient. Ugh, the list goes on and it's too irritating to even think about that trip..I'm happy to read that the owner admits that his last manager was ineffectual, because he most certainly was and I did not appreciate being blown-off when I gave him feedback about our experience. I've been in hospitality and food for over 20 years and I was baffled by the way I was treated on this trip. Oh, and I was newly pregnant with my third son during the trip. I mentioned this on the side, in another review, to which the "captain" quipped that I "certainly didn't look pregnant". WTF??? Diude, when you have morning sickness, 5 glade plug-ins masking the smell of mold, plus a late breakfast b/c of a hungover manager are not my idea of fun. Not to mention the car fiasco (parking is insane and we were blocked in for hours, and missed our dinner reservation and meeting with friends.) Lame.

Yelp
Great place, great staff. Second visit here and loved it. Like other reviews, if you are looking for a Hilton, stay at a Hilton. If you want to pay $20 per night and hang out with people from around the world, this place rocks!!

Yelp
Loved this place! Family and solo traveler friendly in Historic Downtown St. Augustine. Enjoyed meeting other guest in this relaxed & friendly inn. Cute seeing kids at breakfast wearing their Pirate Pajamas and enjoying Capt. Conrad's famous pancakes! Great coffee and excellent location. Don't miss this place.

Yelp
The positive aspects of the other reviews of Pirate Haus are accurate, as are the warning that this is a hostel and not the Hilton. While we were at first very tickled with the place, two negatives have bothered us enough to be wanting to record them here. First off, we are long distance cyclists, and we phoned Pirate Haus to find a place to stay, while being blasted by wind and rain out on the trail. The person on the phone did not seem to appreciate our situation, and not only made me pull out my credit card to read the numbers, out in the rain, but warned us that the street was closed in front of the establishment - irrelevant for cyclists. But what we really did not expect was when the same fellow refused to allow us to store our bikes on the large and empty sun deck for even one minute after the rather chintzy 10 am checkout time. We asked if we could do this, the night before, and the refusal really ruined our enjoyment of the remainder of our stay. Finally, the rate we paid for a private room was the same as for some nearby standard motels, and of course here there is no TV, micro, coffee maker, etc. in the room, since there are the communal facilities. We just thought overall that "communal" would include some little consideration of the special needs of some visitors, like us cyclists. This town, after all, is the major start/end point of the well known Southern Tier cycle route. Although breakfast is stated as being available from 7:30 it was still not ready by 7:45. Since we like to make an early start this was a bit disconcerting' The same fellow as from last night was making the pancakes, and had a "what's your hurry" attitude.

Yelp
I'm sitting in the fish/underwater room right now, kind of sad about leaving this place. It's like staying with your uncle, who's really into pirates. It's comfortable, welcoming, and fun. If you're looking for a chain hotel experience, and you're going to be mad because you didn't read about amenities, don't come here. If you're going to be uptight, don't come here. Do come here if you're into rad pancake breakfasts, hanging out with pirates, and being centrally located, but not broke from just your hotel rates. Do take up Gold Tooth Dave on his Walking Ghost Tour.. Because not only is he a super nice dude, he's very knowledgeable about the history of St. Augustine. I highly recommend this place if you have kids, because they will love it. Thanks guys, we will stay here again!

Yelp
This place would be great for people with kids, they really went to town with the pirate theme. Lap of luxury it's not, but it's clean, great location, and reasonably priced. The people running it were super friendly. I feel a little bad because after taking the recommendation from the innkeeper I went to a local dive bar and had to call them at 2a.m. because I couldn't get the door open, then lost my phone (that bar poured stiff drinks!) so had to have them call it to find the next morning. But they were understanding and cool about it. To be fair, I heard another guest struggling with the lock box too, so I think it may have been tricky - but I am sure the state I was in didn't help..Anyhow, just a cool, laid back place. Since I woke up in a panic I did not take advantage of the free breakfast. Oh, also, that area is tricky to find parking. The streets were built before there were cars, so most residential areas are permit only, and you have to find a meter of lot. I called the Pirate Haus and they offered some suggestions. Since I came in on a Sunday the meters were free - it just took a while finding one. But in St. Augustine, this is the area you want to be, so just go with it, once you get the car parked everything will be fine..

Yelp
If you like to find a home away from home when you travel then you've found it at the Pirate Haus in St. Augustine Florida. I stayed in the Pirate Haus for 9 days and loved every minute of it. When staying at the Pirate Haus not only are you staying in a place where you feel comfortable and safe, but also you are staying in the heart of downtown St. Augustine, which allows you to feel connected to the experiences the city has to offer. Your treated like friends at the Pirate Haus but you're fed like family. "Captain Conrad" (The owner) makes awesome all you can eat pancakes. I loved walking into the kitchen in the morning, smelling coffee brewing, pancakes on the griddle, meeting really cool people, young and older alike. Pirate Haus is a family friendly hostel, children and adults stay here and the owner and staff (John and the other shipmate is awesome!) make sure that the family friendly rules are adhered to. (Also, speak philosophy with shipmate John, very cool topics of conversation!) There is another hostel in the area called Casa Yallaha and I almost stayed there. I had my deposit on my room and called a few days earlier to chat about the accommodations. The person working at the front desk yelled at me and was incredibly hostile and mean. Needless to say I refused to stay there and was refunded my deposit. Go and stay at the Pirate Haus, you won't regret it and neither do I. I am planning to stay at the Pirate Haus again in Feb!

Yelp
Listen, if you're looking for a Hilton, go to a Hilton and not a hostel. Everyone will be happier! If you're looking for one of the best hostels in the States, go to here! It's location in St. Augustine is ridiculously convenient, firstly. But also, staff has always been super nice and helpful the couple times I've been, guiding me in to find their location (that bit was tricky for me. Thanks, "smart" phone). Last time my partner and I woke up there, a staff member was there, eager to make us pancakes and coffee, even writing my partner's name into hers. I mean, personalized pancakes?! Furthermore our private room was clean clean and really cozy. The pirate decor is everywhere, and each room has it's own theme and really cool mural. Ours was an underwater coral reef scene. Our mattress was ah-mazing. Having worked in two hostels, I can say good mattresses are not typical. Our private bathroom was nice and clean, shower was piping hot. Pirate Haus is a great stop for me every time I head Souther than South, and I've never been disappointed.
