When planning for our "staycation" for our anniversary in St. Petersburg, I did a lot of research before choosing the Ponce de Leon Hotel. I read many reviews before choosing it, so I thought I knew what we were getting into. Turns out, we were surprisingly pleased that it was better than we expected.
The location was perfect for us since it was within walking distance of so many things - the Salvador Dali Museum, the St. Petersburg Pier, the Mahaffey Theater, Al Lang Stadium, the marina and yacht club, and many, many parks. The hotel has a deal with a parking garage around the corner. You can acquire a pass from them to park on the 4th floor for a discounted price. Or you can choose to park on the street. It's a dollar an hour until 8 pm to 9 am, then it's free.
The check in went smoothly. The lobby is charming and the elevator is right behind the staircase. It only fits about four people and the door to the rooms opens on the opposite wall! Our room was a bit larger since it was a corner room. We had two sets of windows, with only a street and a building view but we weren't here for that. (Obviously when this was the very first skyscraper in town, they had fabulous views!) There are Art Deco touches still remaining all around, and it's fun to find them. The wooden floors are wonderful.
We had a queen bed that was very comfortable. (Sadly, the pillows were flat and lackluster, consider bringing your own.) The closet in the room was removed and a kitchenette placed inside. It was good quality, with a tiny stovetop, sink, microwave and fridge. Excellent set-up if one was to stay for a few days. The coffee pot was the only thing we used. If one needed a closet, there was an armoire in the room, more fitting to the era. The bathroom was very small, but that did not bother us. It was very clean and had a modern toilet. Was everything in the room brand new? No, but it was spotlessly clean. The only other thing besides the flat pillows that was very obviously worn was the vinyl headboard that had age cracks and flakes.
Our room was facing west and right when we were about to leave for dinner, we realized that the sun came right into the room, blinding us. Luckily, the blinds and the curtains were excellent quality, practically blackout shades, and cut out the light almost 100%. The restaurant that was located next to the hotel closed, but the hotel has a small tapas bar next to the lobby front door. Using Yelp, one can find many restaurants and bars within walking distance as well.
We slept well and check out was just as smooth as check in. Everyone we encountered was pleasant. There was a large bottle of hand sanitizer on the counter for everyone to use and all the employees wore face masks.
We came here because this is a hotel that was built in 1922. We didn't want to stay in a cookie cutter hotel that you can stay in "anywhere America." We wanted to spend the night in a piece of history that was unique and sadly disappearing from our landscape. Seriously, where else will you find something like this? The Ponce de Leon Hotel is charming and sweet and we enjoyed our night. As we had breakfast the next day, we wished we had planned a second night here. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, please consider this charming little place and give it a chance.
