"As the centerpiece of the Shanghai Center complex on Nanjing Road, the 45-story Portman Ritz-Carlton melds contemporary Chinese with traditional European-style decor. Textiles in guest rooms echo the materials used in the qipao . Accommodations in light browns and creams also have 300-thread-count bed linens, and down pillows and duvets. Rooms feature modern Chinese decor, bathrooms with sliding rosewood doors, and Asprey Purple Water amenities. A traditional candle-lighting ceremony takes place in the lobby to re-create a ritual held in big mansions in the era before electricity. At the Ritz Kids Academy, children can take classes on social etiquette, covering such key subjects as table posture, tea manners, and self-confidence."

October 2025 Update||Given our prior great stay, we, of course, came back twice again, and everything is wonderful. Even the laundry service was excellent. Some of the same great staff members are here, as well as some new ones. Thank you to Tarik, Bas, Aileen, Lisa, Yoki, Kevin, Stanislav, Joy (housekeeping), and others, as I did not get everyone's names.||------|A really great stay.  The staff treated us very well.   Excellent treatment by the wonderful Club staff.  Although I am sure I am missing a few names, I remember great, personalized service in the Club from Aileen, Vincent, Matthew, Autumn, Lian, Tina and Ruby. ||If staying at this Ritz-Carlton (or most Ritz-Carltons for that matter), I recommend getting Club access. It may cost more, but the amenities and benefits are often worth it, as it is here. The Club has a lovely decor, five food presentations a day and soft drinks 24 hours per day.  ||Great luncheon buffet at Porter's and the staff is great.  Phil did a an excellent job of ensuring that a lunch that we organized went well (and that I got the meringues that I wanted!). ||Erica in housekeeping helped us with housekeeping needs. ||Michael at the Bell Desk helped us when needed.  ||Cindy did a great job making sure everything was setup for our arrival and when we were there. And, of course, great supervision of the hotel by Jeff, who as did others at the hotel, treated us very warmly.  ||The hotel is very convenient to so many things in Shanghai, as it is right on West Nanjing Road, including great shopping.

An incredible stay at a truly historic property, the first Ritz-Carlton in all of Asia! The recent renovations have brought a very chic and modern feel to the rooms. My room had a fantastic view of the city skyline and the Shanghai Conference Centre. The service was impeccable, especially at the Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge. The five daily food presentations were a culinary journey, and the added perks like complimentary pressing and the 2km private limousine service truly set the standard for luxury. Also had a wonderful evening at the Ritz Bar a really great vibe! The location is unbeatable for shopping and exploration, directly connected to a massive mall and a short walk to the Jing'an Temple metro station. The pool is a bit modest for the property's size, but the spacious gym and spa area with sauna and whirlpool are excellent. A minor note: the lobby vibe feels more like a bustling mall than a grand, opulent hotel, but that’s part of its unique, energetic character. A legendary Shanghai experience!

I highly recommend this hotel. The location at Nanjing West Road is ideal to start your city trip, the hotel room itself is spacious and clean. For breakfast you can have anything your heart and soul craves… 💖 All the staff are amazing and kind, service is immaculate. Right next to the hotel you can find a lot of different restaurants and a small supermarket that has a lot of imported food and drinks. I would stay there again if I could! 🥰

Our stay at The Ritz-Carlton was wonderful as always, and the experience truly exceeded expectations. A special thanks to Yoki from the Executive Lounge — she was very professional, attentive, and reliable in coordinating all our arrangements. With her support, everything throughout our stay was seamless and perfectly managed. We are especially grateful for the outstanding Executive Lounge experience she made possible.

UPDATE: THE HOTEL PIN ON GOOGLE IS WRONG. SEARCH OF THEIR ADDRESS WITHOUT THE HOTEL NAME TO GET THERE! OR you can search for Shanghai Theatre. Marriott Hotels are a good bet. The service is great, location is near there office. There's a great Michelin Bid Gourmet restaurant just downstairs. I've been there twice already on the first day. I was upgraded to this executive room I think. There's a bath tub desk single sofa, huge TV and plenty of space in the room.

Best stay at a hotel in years. Stayed for a week-long business trip, wished it could have been longer. From check in to check out, the stay was everything you expect from a luxury hotel and experience. Attentive staff that learned your name and habits within a couple of days, a wide variety of choices of food and beverages in the lounge, and just all around well being. Slept like a baby, and enjoyed every minute at the hotel. You will too.

When you say the Name Ritz Carlton you think Luxury, classy and elegance! |I am sorry but this location in Shanghai does not have any of this! If you blind folded me and took off the blind fold in my suite I’d think I was in a Four Points Sheraton. |This location is old, my bed was hard, the smell in the room was like mold and it made me sneeze all the time. |The breakfast here was so so again nothing that made you saw wow!!|If you are looking for very nice property I’d recommend the St. Regis on the bund… it’s a way classier, elegant and luxurious property!! |Sorry just keeping it real!

Really quite disappointed with the Ritz here. Rooms are old but decently maintained. Bathroom feels like stepping back into the 90s. Standard and nothing special, feels like a Sheraton inside once logos are removed. Service was lacking. Check in wad robotic, and breakfast was so rushed and packed. Food selection weak. Honestly there are much better options elsewhere. Really wanted to like this grand dame, but it's way past its prime and looks like the owner won't invest on upkeep and upgrades. What a shame
