The Best Summer Food in All 50 States - AFAR

"The small Nebraska establishment credited with originating the tin roof sundae in Potter: a layered, salty-and-sweet concoction of chocolate ice cream, hot fudge, vanilla with marshmallow cream, and Spanish peanuts, served where the dessert was first popularized." - Shilo Urban

Google
Amazing experience at the Potter Sundry. The new management has cleaned up so well and turned this into a family ran business. I was beyond pleased with my service. And the tin roof remains my favorite dessert. Extremely affordable for exceptional quality.

Google
A little hidden gem among a small town. The restaurant is clean, welcoming, prices are fair and the staff was so friendly. Food was fresh and delicious! I ordered a mini tin roof Sundae... And even that was too big. If you're ever in the area this establishment is a must stop at. The town has such rich history and this little cafe is part of that.

…Just as AMAZING as I remember it, but With an extensive homemade menu and OUTSTANDING customer service; this is a destination eatery. I grew up in POTTER and In my early childhood, I would frequent the sundry for Tin Roof roofs, stationary, and whatever other little items might be for sale. It’s the same thing now, but FITS today’s new and modern age. Highly recommended! Two thumbs up 👍🏽 👍🏽 thanks 1 million for the good memories And keep on shining, Potter Sundry.

Fun little stop on my road trip to the Midwest. The service was excellent. The restaurant was historic and the food was delicious. I got coconut cream pie and the crust was so divine. I ordered the cabbage burger. It was fun to try some typical Nebraskan food. The seasoning on the cheese curds was magnificent. Loved everything so much!!!!

Google
Excellent friendly service. Growth up grilled cheese was delicious with plenty of perfect cheese, turkey, real bacon, and tomato. Was just so good! Topped that off with a delicious medium chocolate sundae with nuts. The owner was very friendly and the waitress was amazing as well. You definitely need to go to the Potter Sundry! Will positively be going back soon.

Old fashioned charm new management. Really great breakfast. Wonderful family operation

Google
Ordered their signature tin roof sundae. Really rich chocolate! Got another tin roof but substituted the homemade mint for the vanilla. Rich chocolate with a cool refresh- better than the typical chocolate mint. Also got a cookie dough shake with chocolate chunks. Yum! Highly recommend! Hope it's here another 100 years!❤️

Google
The Potter Sundry is about as "Norman Rockwell" as it gets. The birthplace of the Tin Roof Sundae was one of our 2024 Nebraska Passport stops, and my only regret was not to get a bigger sundae. The owner had a watchful eye on her flock of customer, and she ensured all were serviced well as she shared historical snippets and her own story about buying the establishment. Totally worth the stop and will do it again!

Yelp
My husband and I, took a lunch break on our roadtrip, in Potter, Nebraska at The Potter Sundry, "Home of the Tin Roof Sundae." We enjoyed a great meal, including their Award-Winning, Green Chili! They use the old apothecary cabinets, from back when the building was a drug store, over 100 years ago, for memorabilia and Local Artisan Made, products. I purchased some house-made, Enchilada Sauce and a beautiful gem stone necklace. #SupportLocal #SupportSmallBusinessOwners

Yelp
We do a lot of Yelp searching on the road, sometimes we are misled. But not at Potter Sundry. It was like stepping back in time. Everything was made to order and delicious. The ambience is exactly what you hope for in a quaint historic town of yesteryear. Service was personal and friendly. We will definitely bookmark this wonderful breakfast spot for our next road trip!

Yelp
Stumbled across this place on a warm Saturday afternoon and four hours of driving and thought ice cream sounded great. Looked clean with an attractive homey ambiance, so I walked in. There was a woman at the front register doing receipts - she didn't acknowledge me so I walked back to sit at the ice cream counter, passing a few people sitting at tables to visit after lunch. Was sitting there for awhile when a girl came from the back. She saw me, didn't say anything, and started wiping down tables from lunch. I waited a few minutes longer with nothing happening, figured they were done for the day and headed out. I stopped at the cashier and asked if they were closed - she said no, and asked what I needed. I said I just wanted to get a cone but had a full day and needed to get back to the road. "Oh, I can get that for you - I'll be back there in just a second," she said. So I went to the counter and sat. And sat... and sat. She had gone back to working on receipts and after three minutes I realized she wasn't getting up anytime soon. This time I got up and kept walking. I LOVE to support local businesses when traveling (and I travel 20-30K miles a year) and I see they have some GREAT reviews for their food. Unfortunately, the service here left me seriously wanting.

Yelp
Excellent place to eat, good food, good service. Support your local small business.....get a tin roof sundae!!!

Patrick M.

Yelp
We went for lunch which great. The tin roof sundae was an ideal way to to finish off a meal or make a stop off the interstate 80. I know I will be there again every time I drive the Potter exit.

Yelp
Love this diner is the tiny town of Potter!! The servers were nice and food surprisingly tasty!! I also bought 2 homemade jams from the town at the diner. Highly recommend to stop here if you take the I-80 and close by!

Yelp
Excellent food and very sweet, comforting environment and service. My wife and I stopped by passing through and so glad we did - if you have a dog with you just take them across the street while you enjoy a delicious meal cooked with TLC!

Yelp
Okay. Driving from Omaha to Lake Tahoe. Stopped in Sidney NE and nothing to eat. Thank God we didn't, because just down the road in Potter NE was this gem of a diner. Awesome biscuits and gravy, incredible corned beef hash and the best green Chile this side of New Mexico. Stop here to eat. You won't regret it.

Yelp
So glad I stopped in Potter NE. The Potter Sundry is a wonderful place. Got a really good apple pecan salad and a huge slice of pie. Nice little park across the street to sit out and enjoy a beautiful day. Was able to pick up home made jams as well. If I lived closer I would eat here every day. Thank you for making me feel welcome in your wonderful town

Yelp
What a great little gem we happened onto this morning. Great service and really good food. This place is the real deal.

Yelp
Loved the food and service and the tin roof Sunday was perfect for this adorable restaurant. If you get sweet potato fries get the marshmallow dip and who knew that spicy cheese curds were better with Caramel? A fun treat for sure. Burgers and sandwiches were awesome. A great place to stop on your journey! Family friendly for the win! The restrooms are across the street and are wonderful and clean.

Yelp
I stopped here on a road trip as part of my 'no fast food' philosophy. Super friendly and responsive staff. I sat at the counter and watched them putting together fresh ingredient salads and fresh made sandwiches. I ordered the Rueben with sweet potato fries, as recommended by the shop keeper next door. Delicious! The meat was so flavorful! It was cooked on the flattop and chopped up giving lots of caramelization and banging flavor. The fries were cooked perfectly. The place had a locals coming in as evidenced by the staff greetings. Enjoy a small town gem and support the locals.

Yelp
Stopped by yesterday to grab some chocolate milkshakes and they were great! Definitely worth a stop if you are traveling through.

Yelp
We were traveling West on I-80 and were looking for a place to eat lunch when we found this place with good reviews. It sounded so nice and historic that we had to take a detour and see it. It's only a few minutes off the interstate into the town. We walked in an were greeted by a really nice you lady who seated us and gave us menus. They have a fairly wide variety menu and the prices are reasonable. I chose a Ruben with fries which was fixed just right and delicious. My wife got the Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato also very delicious. Their main claim to fame is a huge sundae called the "Tin Roof". We were stuffed but, decided we had to try it. We were going to split a small but, our server talked us into the mini since she thought it would better suit us. A couple sitting next to us got the small and it was huge. Our mini was just right for the two of us. This is an amazing place so if you are nearby do not pass us an opportunity to enjoy a great meal and a wonderful sundae.

Yelp
We stopped by here on the way through Nebraska to get a milkshake. It wasn't very good--too runny and syrupy. However, the service was great and the diner was eclectic and fun. There is one small gas station in town if you are passing through, but it is more expensive than gas in other cities.

Yelp
Cute town. Very polite waitstaff. My family got some pie and jam to go. The strawberry rhubarb is amazing!!! We stopped here randomly and it's one of the highlights from our cross country trip. (Florida to Washington!))

Yelp
Fun location. Great history and friendly service. Good onion rings. Save room for the Tin Roof Sundae, which was invented here. And be sure to go next door to see the duck pin bowling alley. Absolutely one of a kind. Both the sundry and the bowling alley are worth the trip off I-80.

Becky R.

Yelp
Stop here for the nicest people, cleanest restrooms, homemade jams and Tin Roof Sundays!!!

April R.

Yelp
The hamburger patties were smallish but quality. They were out of GF buns, so that was disappointing. Sadly, 3 out of 4 of our orders were wrong. I will give them 4 stars because the meat and ice cream sundaes were so good.
google avatar

Alli S.

Yelp
We stopped here based solely on the first review of the tin roof sundaes. And they were delicious! Visiting fort Collins from California we have never been to Wyoming or Nebraska so on a whim we decided to drive to Cheyenne for lunch and then go for dessert in NE. We are our sundaes at a cute drugstore style ice cream counter. The owners were so friendly and lovely. Not much else going on in the town but if you're driving thru, it's worth a stop and a scoop!

Darryl S.

Yelp
Small place, but incredibly friendly service. Potter Sundry invented the Tin Roof Sundae back in 1916, and they've perfected it. Try one. You won't be disappointed.

Liz T.

Yelp
Home if the Tin Roof Sundae -FANTASTIC! Also order the special. As travelers passing through we walked in on a Friday afternoon and the place was full of locals. Every single one of them had ordered the special. My husband also ordered it and it was just like his Grandmother would have made. They've also been named Best Dessert in the country by Food Network. Definitely a hidden gem.

Yelp
Great spot in Potter, NE. Don't pass this gem if you are in western Nebraska. They truly have the World's Best Tin Roof Sundae!

Yelp
This place is a real treat. My coworker and I stopped in on our way to work. We noticed we were going to be close to their closing time. We called to see if it was ok, and the woman working was more than pleasant and said we could still come on in. Great conversation with her and a gentleman there. Their tin roof sundaes were the absolute best! If you're in the area, it's definitely worth the stop.

Yelp
Good bang for the buck ice cream. Tin Roof Sundae's got some delish vanilla and choco ice cream with mallows and some squirts of syrup. Topped with a couple nuts. Outstanding combo. Highly recommend.

Grannie J.

Yelp
Great family atmosphere in old-time soda fountain. Staff was prompt, nice. Prices were low - especially for the amount of food on the plate! Good home-style cooking. Wish we were early enough for a slice of pie - it goes quickly! Ice cream treats are to-die-for.
