An iconic Gothic landmark, the Powder Tower (Prašná brána) marks the entrance to Prague’s Old Town and the start of the Royal Route. Built in 1475 by architect Matěj Rejsek, it was intended as a ceremonial gateway rather than a defensive structure. Originally called the New Tower, it gained its current name in the 17th century when it was used to store gunpowder. Standing at 65 meters, its ornate façade features statues of Bohemian kings and saints, showcasing the craftsmanship of the Late Gothic period. The tower’s restoration in the 19th century by Josef Mocker preserved its historical charm. Climbing its 186 steps rewards visitors with panoramic views of Prague’s skyline. A must-visit for history and architecture enthusiasts!
