My Suggested 4 Day Prague Itinerary for 2025

"Back in town, don’t miss the medieval Powder Tower — one of the original 13 city gates (construction began in 1475) that later stored gunpowder and was heavily damaged in 1757, with most sculptures replaced in 1876 — get tickets in advance to skip the line." - Matthew Kepnes

Where to Stay in Prague (Updated 2025)

"One of the last remaining old city gates, the Powder Tower offers a good vantage point to get a view of the city and is a memorable historical structure I recommend visiting." - Matthew Kepnes

Wonderful structure away from the busy area of Prague. The structure is grand and captivating. The view from the top is amazing. You get a whole different view when compared to the ones from the old town area. You also get to see some modern parts of Prague. You can buy the tickets ahead of time but it’s not necessary. Definitely should visit. Just get a little disappointing to see people carving their initials on a historical structure on top of the tower. The local government should really do something about that.

Incredible piece of history! We didn’t go into the tower but it’s pretty cool to see from outside. There is a little cafe inside with amazing Art nouveau architecture worth seeing just inside the lobby!

The Powder Tower is a famous building in Prague you can visit anytime. I went on the second day of a three-day trip, and I opted not to climb the tower. I really feel like I'll be back to Prague again, so I plan on climbing it next time. It was still really nice to visit when the sun was getting lower. I'm sure you'll enjoy The Powder Tower whether you climb it or not.

The powder gate tower — Magnificent and striking, this stunning architecture stands proudly in the old town. If you’re in the area, there’s no way you’ll miss it — its historic charm is truly eye-catching. So beautiful, it’s hard to look away.

I visited the Powder Tower in Prague’s Old Town because our tour guide recommended it, and it was a great experience. The climb to the top was manageable, and the view was absolutely amazing. You can see the entire city, and if the weather is nice, it’s even more breathtaking. It’s a fantastic spot for photos and to appreciate Prague’s beauty from above. A very enjoyable and worthwhile activity that I’d definitely recommend to anyone visiting the city.

It’s worth a visit. Nice walk down from/to the old town. We didn’t go up the tower because there are lots of towers and thus opportunities to have a nice view of the city. But a must place for a walk.

An iconic Gothic landmark, the Powder Tower (Prašná brána) marks the entrance to Prague’s Old Town and the start of the Royal Route. Built in 1475 by architect Matěj Rejsek, it was intended as a ceremonial gateway rather than a defensive structure. Originally called the New Tower, it gained its current name in the 17th century when it was used to store gunpowder. Standing at 65 meters, its ornate façade features statues of Bohemian kings and saints, showcasing the craftsmanship of the Late Gothic period. The tower’s restoration in the 19th century by Josef Mocker preserved its historical charm. Climbing its 186 steps rewards visitors with panoramic views of Prague’s skyline. A must-visit for history and architecture enthusiasts!
