The Purist Villas

"Set the scene for us. What do you see as you arrive? The Purist Villas is a property full of indoor-outdoor spaces, wooden carvings, stone sculptures, primitive artifacts from all over the Indonesian archipelago, and bespoke furniture. Huge hunks of petrified wood and rough stone make elegant tables, and there is so much rattan and wicker that you might nickname this place the Museum of Chair Weaving. Add to that chicken-coop lampshades, inscribed Timor stone and Sumbanese relics, and landscaped subak-irrigation channels running through the grounds, and there’s never a dull moment. Is it part of a chain, or is it a one-off hotel? The imaginative modern Indonesian furniture and bohemian ambience underscore the owners' impeccable taste. The hotel has all the hallmarks of an independently owned property, a true labor of love. How about the rooms—what can we expect? If we have a choice, is there a room, suite, or villa we should try to book?Echoing Bali's terraced rice fields, the 17 stylish suites and villas here are scattered amid jungle, ensuring that you have all the space and privacy you could ever want. Each suite has a balcony or garden; the Pool Suite, one- and two-bedroom villas, and the two-bedroom residence all have their own pools. Amenities are top notch—from yoga mats and batik kimonos to folders of DVDs to watch on the big TV—without so much as a whisper of corporate flourishes. How about the restaurant—worth a stop, or should we try to venture out around Bali?Balisimo, the thatched open-air bar and restaurant, overlooks one of two pools and a dramatic green valley. The kitchen fuses Balinese and Mediterranean cooking. Although it serves three meals a day, stick to breakfast, snacks, and cocktails; after all, there are so many interesting and exceptional dining options in Ubud that warrant exploring. How's the service? All of the staff are Balinese. They anticipate all you need need and graciously make sure everyone is as happy as can be. What's the vibe among your fellow travelers?Unmistakably grown-up, discerning, and discreet. You mentioned exploring the dining options in Ubud—what's the surrounding area like? There's not much around the hotel other than a few hole-in-the-wall stalls and green rice paddies. If you're aiming to explore further, hop aboard the shuttle and explore the temples of downtown Ubud. Is there anything you'd change? The quality of the restaurant stands to be improved a bit. Wrap it up: What sets this place apart?Designed by Dutch-Spanish duo Yvonne Hulst and Alberto Cortes, who also have beautiful hotels in Ibiza and Marrakech, The Purist Villas' eclectic decor, enriched with authentic Indonesian arts and crafts, is sensual, textural, and unique." - Juliet Kinsman

The Purist Villas & Spa, Ubud, Bali - Explore & Book

"A half-hour walk from central Ubud, Bali's bustling cultural hub, you'll find yourself in a quiet haven nestled amid a vibrant jungle backdrop. It's a small-scale yet super-stylish resort where you can flop, drop and treat yourself to spa and supper. The wonderfully private suites and villas each feel like a true home-away-from-home, and most have their own pools and verdant tropical surroundings. What sets this place apart from Ubud's other offerings is its warm welcome and exceptionally beautiful design. Expect a fusion of traditional and modern. Wood carvings from Java and Timor blend with minimalist white limestone, and cushion-strewn pagodas. We especially liked the pebble-stone flooring, fantastic four-posters and decadent bathrooms. Enjoy the soundtrack of crickets, watch the bees buzz, and gaze at butterflies fluttering across the tropical gardens. We felt we were living in a Rousseau painting. Highs Beautifully designed and very private suite and villas; those with private pools feel particularly specialExceptional service: the friendly welcoming team really look after you and we felt instantly at homePampering spa, with Ayurveda treatments and striking main pool with lime-cushioned loungers, overlooking the verdant forestIdeally located within easy reach of central Ubud - walk or use the hotel's regular free shuttle serviceExcellent seasonal food served in the restaurant or delivered to your villa Lows Don't expect far-reaching views - though the forest backdrop brings you closer to the 'tropical'One of the River Villas is located next to the pool and isn’t quite as private as others, though it is convenient for families with children of swimming ageThough all ages are welcome, the set-up isn't ideal for young children" - Melissa Burfitt

The Purist Villas & Spa (Ubud, Bali) 5 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"In the hotel world there are a few things worth being a purist about, and the tradition of the Balinese boutique hotel is one of them. A mile or so outside of the town of Ubud, in Bali’s inner highlands, is a hotel that’s as close as you’re going to get to the Platonic idea of the modern villa resort. The Purist’s 16 villas and suites are exemplary for the care with which they’ve been assembled — at up to two bedrooms apiece, they’re practically residential in the quality of their finishes and furnishings." - Tablet Hotels

We stayed as a couple for 5 nights in bamboo villa 2. Amazing experience- couldn’t fault. Villa was luxurious with beautiful jungle vista and fabulous Indonesian art and artifacts. Felt completely private and oh so quiet. The food at the restaurant was excellent. We enjoyed several massages here and all the staff were exceptional, polite and very helpful. We had some tours included as part of our package - went to rice terraces, waterfall, Kintamani cafe for lunch and also did the purification blessing at the temple (highly recommend this with an English speaking guide). We did some in house activities making offerings and flower arrangements and it was lovely to learn about Balinese culture. There is a mini mart 5 min walk up the road and ubud town is just a 10min grab ride away - can easily go into town for dinner/shopping/cultural show and then feel like you are in the middle of nowhere when you come back to your villa.|So relaxing and peaceful. Highly recommend and thank you for such a lovely stay!

Excellent 3 night stay, beautiful large suite( Bamboo 2) with a big private garden and shagadelic pool. Bed was super comfy, great shower...all perfect. Best massages we had in Bali, great staff, nice big public pool, place was empty in mid Nov. Lost a point as food was just ok, maybe a bit picky of me? Short walk to excellent eateries in Ubud main drag. Go on, treat yourself, you deserve it!

Wonderful in every way! Very rarely write reviews before I leave a property but this place warranted it! Exceptional in every single aspect and this isn’t something one says lightly.Fortunate to stay all over the world in luxury hotels and this is up with those. Peaceful beautiful setting. Rooms are huge , so relaxing and cleaned when you are at breakfast. Also love the evening turndown. Like returning to a haven of tranquility. The food is superb . What makes this place stand out is the personal but not intrusive service from the staff. Never been anywhere where they are so friendly and genuinely want to look at you. The manager is always around and again is fantastic at helping you with anything. Thank you to him for his help! Dewi and Choki also very lovely in every way. If you are reading this then don’t hesitate to book a stay! It’s literally heaven ……..🙏

We had a 2 night stay in a villa here. The Purist is hidden down a small lane way so it surprising to see the extent of the property. Its well laid out with some of walkways by a stream. All the walkways are well lit in the evenings.|Our room was just beside a pool with a jungle view. There was a veranda and another small outside area to relax under cover either from the sun or rain. |Our room was well laid out with a nice seating area and a walk in wardrobe. The bathroom had a large bath and a shower that was open toward the sky. It was definitely different and fun.|Breakfast was eggs or pancakes, a plate of bread and pastries and a fruit plate. There was plenty to eat.|We had a nice meal in the restaurant in the evening and then settled in for drinks. There was a good atmosphere in the restaurant, it looked out onto another pool and seating area.|We used the free hotel car to go into Ubud and also WhatsApped the hotel to order the car for the return journey, at a cost of 70000r. |Although our stay was short it was really nice to be in this calm welcoming hotel

We stayed 4 days and 3 nights last week. We had two different Villas due to a minor issue in the first. We were very happy with both. The second with the biggest pool in the complex was very spacious and has a separate building alongside the pool facing our own open plan lounge. It was so relaxing and quiet and although we had to move we were so happy. The staff were so friendly and helpful at all times. Thank you so much.

We just spent three nights at Purist in one of the Bamboo villas and really enjoyed our stay. The villas are spacious and private, the amenities are five star with everything you need for your stay provided. We especially liked the mosquito nets on our bed. ||The food was amazing and the staff were very warm and attentive. We would like to shout out Choki for organising a lovely candlelight dinner for a special occasion. He made a few accomodations and also made sure we got a special treatment. Choki is a great ambassador for what the resort is trying to achieve and deserves a promotion in our view. (P.s. please send our candlelight dinner photos you took)||The resort is in a quiet area but only 15 mins walk to Ubud central. We highly recommend staying here, it is well worth the price!

The room had pebbles on the floor so it was very hard to walk on. There was nowhere to put your luggage. Only 3TV channels and the reception was not good. Lighting was poor and there are many steps in the resort to navigate so if you have mobility issues, it is very difficult. The resort is hard to find as it’s in the backstreets in a narrow street in Oakwood. The meals were okay, towels supplied with average and the bed was not that comfortable with a platform around it Which made it very difficult to get in and out of especially at night time. The staff were very friendly and lovely, we could not fault them. They could not do enough for us. This is not a five star resort.

Tldr: I would consider to return mainly because the staff are wonderful, everyone pleasant, friendly, efficient and speak very good English. All of them kindly and helpful. Extremely welcome feeling from the first moment. |I would describe it to be a good four-star casual boutique mini resort, becoming in some areas a little bit worn down where paint and wood etc. needs replacing and updating. It isn't a five-star resort, although the service could befit a top class hotel.|Pool villa has large wooden deck and rectangular infinity edge plunge pool overlooking the bamboo, deep enough and long enough to swim a few strokes. An outdoor dining area. Bedroom has a beautiful woven high ceiling with a ceiling fan. Wooden sliding doors to the patio and to the dining area. Really it's like a small house so it's definitely a vill, quite romantic. Large bathroom with huge stone tub and separate shower. The air conditioning is very noisy and only just sufficient. It takes a very long time to cool down the room despite the very high ceiling and at night it can get a bit clammy. The bathroom is not air conditioned and the shower is outdoor fun but very humid.|The main bedroom floor is paved in river pebbles of about 3 cm average which looks beautiful, but in fact is a little bit uncomfortable on the feet. They do provide however woven grass flip-flops to wear while you're staying. Also batik cotton robes although far too small for my size.|Dining table outside and refrigerator in wooden cabinet with kettle and cups. No coffee machine, only one packet of instant coffee per day and two tea bags per day. One of each variety. Copious water provided in glass bottles.|King size wooden bed with mosquito nets, I find it comfortable. The bed linen was of fairly basic quality but clean, sheet and blanket rather than duvet. Ikat style fabric used for the bedrunner and seat cover etc. Daybed of wood: uncomfortable for sitting on without as it has an upright 30 cm high wooden back and no cushions. Watching television can only really be done from lying on the bed because it's so uncomfortable. |Interior design items are all Indonesian or Balinese style knickknacks like baskets and art objects and some wooden doors on the wall etc, rustic Balinese ambience - for example, some stone statues, handmade metal table, etc. Lighting is from lamps and so pretty dark in the room at night. You can't see anything if you drop it!|Room cleaning was good but only on one evening has turndown service happened, although I'm not that bothered so have not telephoned to ask them for it to be done. If I wanted extra water I just telephone and they brought it.|The outside deck is quite worn and has some wonky planks that move when you walk on them. The wood needs oiling or treating and is very dry, the railings etc. are all made from this very old and dry wood. The brown lounging cushions are all very stained from being left out a lot in all weather and of course it rains a lot here. Occasionally when it storms the staff does pack them away in a corner but mostly they were left out unless I put them away myself. But they need replacing & look tatty. There is no shade on the balcony, such as a parasol and no colour. One of the lovely Balinese style brightly coloured parasols would really improve the outside area.|Communal areas all have a similar rustic vibe and are kept tidy. The compound is built on a hillside next to a deep valley with a small rivulet in the base which you can hear trickling, especially when the rain is heavy. The hillside is covered in a thicket of giant bamboo with some tall coconut palms also, so the environment is totally green and nature. Planting in the compound is lush and the gardeners work hard to tidy up, falling leaves, etc. Lamps hang in baskets from bamboo. Lots of statues around the place to give an arty feeling. There is a concrete drainage stream through the middle of the compound with little bridges. |The trees are full of varieties of birds that you can hear singing all day, lots of butterflies and some local squirrels that chase each other and chatter. Small bats come out at dusk and fly around which is also lovely. Steps up and down through the compound are marble and get slippery whenever it rains. Staff do alert you to the slipperiness. The compound is not accessible to anybody who has mobility issues around steps.|The spa and small gym are in another hillside area with a nice view of the nature. |There are two small pools that have lounging areas next to them but again no parasols for shade. That said, there are only about a dozen rooms and some of the villas have their own pool so it does not feel crowded at all. It is definitely a boutique environment. |The restaurant is small and can get quite noisy with some dubious choices of pop music playing. Food is very fresh, healthy and simple, it arrives quite quickly, nicely plated and with accompaniments. Everything I've had has been tasty. The kitchen does well with a relatively small menu of Indonesian, a few Balinese and international dishes. It is plant-based with a few hints of cheese and additional options of fish/seafood. |Breakfast is a la carte but you can have as much as you want and includes a plate of fruit beautifully cut, freshly made smoothies or juice, teas and coffees including barista, a basket of pastries, as well as your hot items or healthy bowls. |In the afternoon for a couple of hours they offer a free afternoon tea like many hotels in Ubud, with small savoury and sweet bites, including some Balinese sweets which are absolutely delicious and again nicely presented.|The location is down a side lane of one of the north-south streets out of Ubud, not much easily accessible close by, 5 minutes walk to a couple of restaurants, 10 to 15 minutes to the nearest massage places or coffee shops and half an hour walk to the centre of Ubud. The road is very narrow and the traffic in Ubud and much of Bali is absolutely atrocious, with constant jams of trucks, cars and motorbikes. There is no footpath. If it rains you will get very wet as the drainage floods quickly. The hotel will drop you into Ubud four times per day if you book in advance. (However, as you can imagine the last one is about 5:00, so too early for dinner realistically) However, you have to make your own way back, but there are plenty of chaps offering a ride and it is about 70,000 rupiah to return to the hotel. You could walk back in 30 minutes approximately but I would not advise it after dark as there is no street light and again the traffic is really bad. Of course it is also very hot and sweaty! |That said, the hotel really feels a bit like an oasis as you can't really hear the traffic noise, it is masked by the sound of the running water in the drainage channel and from the rivulet down below in the valley although you cannot see it. You cannot see the villas on the other side of the valley, just a glimpse of a patio or their lights at night so it is quite secluded and you do feel away from the frenetic crazy crowds of Ubud.|Overall I have felt very cared for and relaxed.
