A few weeks ago, my former advisor during my graduate years wished me happy birthday. He also let me know that he was in Toronto for a conference and that I should check it out.
I was in southwestern Ontario on a staycation. I said that I couldn't make it to the conference, but would love to see him and my other past professors if they had a chance to go out for lunch or dinner. We are similar in that we are planners. He said that he would consult with my friend and past peer in this master's program, and would make something happen.
He had asked me if Sunday night would work. It was perfect. He proceeded to book dinner reservations at The Queen and Beaver Public House.
I headed downtown for a 7:30 pm dinner. I was taking a photo of the restaurant's entrance. My other former professor, who was with my former advisor, yelled my name out. I said that I was being a tourist in my own city, took the photo, and then went over to hug them both. We all then entered the restaurant.
I have not seen them since I attended my graduation stateside. It had been seven years.
We were a party of six. My friend and former peer was already seated in the restaurant with her husband. I also met a professor who joined the faculty after I had graduated. She sat next to me.
We had a wonderful server. As a group of writers and researchers, I felt like we were grilling him on what the food items were on the menu. This restaurant serves British pub fare. You get a list of items without any descriptions or photos. He was patient and great in answering all our questions.
It was also the last day of Summerlicious. I was the only person who went with that menu. For someone who has not participated in Summerlicious for years, I decided to go crazy and go twice this summer.
I asked our server for help with choosing a beer. He asked if I liked smooth beers. I do. He recommended the Blood Brothers Brewing's Inner Eye Pale Ale. It had a hint of lemon and went down smooth. It was perfectly refreshing. I loved it.
My friend and former peer ordered pork scratchings as a starter. She did not like them. She thought that they would be flavourful pork rinds. Both our former professor and I had one. They were boring and flavourless. My friend let the server know that they weren't tasty. He was thoughtful to take them away and not charge my friend for them.
I ordered the following items from the Summerlicious menu:
- Chilled tomato and cucumber soup with crusty bread
- Monkfish and asparagus, with hazelnuts and tarragon brown butter
- Lemon meringue pie
I absolutely loved the chilled tomato and cucumber soup. It was the perfect combination on a hot night. It was nicely pureed and had a few diced cucumbers in it as garnish. The crusty bread was crusty where it should be and soft inside.
Although the monkfish and asparagus was a smaller main portion than I had anticipated, it was delicious. The monkfish was flaky and flavourful. I loved the tarragon brown butter that worked nicely with the asparagus. It was tasty.
Finally, the lemon meringue pie was divine. I love a tart lemon in a pie. This slice stood out. Simply outstanding!
We had a wonderful evening catching up. My former advisor had the Sunday roast dinner, which consisted of roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, and roasted potatoes. It looked good. He was happy with his meal.
My other former professor and the new one both went with the mushroom pithivier, which is essentially a wonderful mushroom filling inside puffy pastry. It looked amazing. They enjoyed their food, too.
I made the suggestion to get a group photo before we left. We flagged our server, who moved our table to get a decent group shot. I was impressed.
Washrooms are on the second floor. If you have mobility issues, you may have difficulty getting up and down the stairs. The women's washroom was clean, classy, and stocked nicely.
Street parking is limited. I ended up parking in the Impark garage across the street, which is attached to the Chelsea Hotel.
I had a great time with great company and yummy food. I'd come back here again.
