10 Offbeat Things to Do in Istanbul (Updated 2025)
"The Museum of Turkish Jews traces the long Jewish presence in Turkey and helps illustrate the community's contributions and struggles; it's a useful stop if you want to explore Istanbul's Jewish history, and it features in Jewish-heritage walking tours of Galata and Balat. The museum is in Bereketzade Mahallesi, open Sunday–Thursday 10am–5pm and Fridays 10am–1pm (closed Saturdays), admission is free (donations encouraged), and passport or official ID is required for entry." - Matthew Kepnes
Incredible piece of Jewish history in Istanbul. The museum beautifully illustrates the 1492 arrival of Sephardic Jews, highlighting their immense contributions to Turkish medicine, diplomacy, and the arts. By being connected to the Neve Shalom Synagogue, it offers a rare, respectful window into active Jewish life in modern Turkey.

An interesting museum exploring the history of Sephardic Jews in the Ottoman Empire and modern times. It’s a small museum, located near Galata Tower, so I recommend stopping by if you enjoy learning about history.
I would have loved an audio guide with more detailed narration, but the exhibits are still easy to follow and well presented. If you plan to visit, make sure to bring your passport or another official form of identification (they accept a pdf/photo on your phone)

Good mesuem with info and history about Jewish. It's not huge and no audio guide available but liked it overall. 👍
(P.S. toilets need some renovation).

It’s quite nice place to visit and it’s generally informative.
However, entering this museum is very hectic and isn’t a pleasant experience..! You have to hand your ID, get searched with metal detectors as if you are entering an airport.. then a huge, black steel door is opened.. to be honest, that was a little creepy..! But once you get through this unpleasant journey, you can find a lot of interesting and informative exhibits.
Note: it’s quite a small museum.

Splendid place. Entrance fee was 120 TRY, you can purchase a keyring aswell. You are allowed to take photographs in the Museum and the Synagogue. There were airport-like security checks at the entrance. Museum was extremely informative and the Synagogue was very pleasant. Overall highly recommended, a must-visit.

I learned a lot here and like the displays here very much. I'd tell you about them, but I don't think Google Maps is allowing me to post anymore. Some crazy algorithm or something. Maybe I'm the one who's crazy.
