On the Grid : The Ramen Butcher

"Who can hold the title for 'Best Ramen' in a city? The Ramen Butcher certainly fights hard for this record. The Tonkotsu classic is where you start and if you fancy new and interesting flavours then 'GREEN' (Fresh Basil Paste and Parmesan Cheese) or 'ORANGE' (Rich Miso Marinated Ground Pork) amongst others could be for you. An array of sides are also on the menu (karaage, gyoza etc). You be the judge." - Post Projects

Everything is top notch. I didn't know they opened up this second location until recently, glad I randomly came across it while driving by. It's so much closer to home and I don't have to go downtown anymore! The tsukemen is very good, the spicy one as well! I recommend the chashu (pork belly) but the kaarage was tasty as well. Can't wait to come back and try some more items! Kid's meal had a great presentation, our party ranged from age 3 to 80. Everyone left happy, full and satisfied!

Google
A quaint ramen place in Burnaby serving flavourful japanese dishes and specializing in different Ramen varieties. Had the karaage for appies. Then tried their Scorpion Ramen Level 1, and it didn’t dissapoint. The noodles had the right consistency served with rich broth, topped with meat and veggies. Opted to add on ajitama and extra chasu for my combo. We also ordered the taukemen, that had a seaweed broth profile. All dishes are tasty and freshly prepared as you order. Service was fast and efficient. Only tricky part is finding a parking spot.

I used to go to the ramen butcher downtown very often and never had bad experience. I really do not like to give any bad reviews but sadly, I was very shocked that both of our ramen were cold... Lukewarm at best. When I asked the waitress, hey how come the broth is so cold she just touched the bowl and said no it’s warm but...You don’t have to be connoisseur in this cuisine to know that taken always comes piping hot. So politely said, just tell them next time make sure make it hot. Also, we requested some cold ice water because the water that you gave us is very lukewarm and the waitress said sorry the ice machine is broken. Honestly, if that’s the case, the management should just go out and buy some ice until the machine is fixed because giving lukewarm water to customers is absolutely not acceptable. I will try visiting one more time and I will amend my review accordingly. As mentioned, I really don’t wanna give any negative reviews, but I hope management will read this and correct their ways for the sake of their business... otherwise I cannot see this business succeeding much longer..

Ordered the Basic Ramen from their Gojiro Week special. The meat was tender and soft, with lots of flavour! The thick noodles were firm, but not too chewy, and the broth itself tasted delectable. The service was good; staff were very friendly and quick to assist, with wait times being about as good as you'd expect a ramen place to be. I like the vibe the restaurant gives off too - a nice casual place to meet and have lunch or dinner. The only thing I would improve on is the clarity of where to park; the lot I initially went to seemed to be reserved for the Chinese place next door, so it took some time to scope out the appropriate place to sit my car. Other than that, I could definitely see myself returning in the future!

Google
I took my hungry teen here and he ordered the classic ramen with an add on of green onions and egg. I got the Vege Tantan ramen. Both were great and my son rated his 10/10. We were able to get a table right away at 6:45 on a Saturday night. Very tasty and I’m sure we’ll be back.

Google
Ramen here is pretty solid and the tonkotsu comes with a free noodle refill too. I tried their original tonkotsu one. I enjoyed the broth and the chashu was pretty good and thick, maybe a little bit overcooked. The noodles left a little room to be desired and I enjoyed the extra toppings on top. Service was good and the spot had a cool vibe with all the Japanese decorations. I will probably come back to try the dipping noodles since I enjoyed the ramen

Google
Good portion and tasty ramen at reasonable price. I had the classic ramen with Ajitama (egg) as add-on. Price tag was $15.45. Ramen was chewy and not too soft. 2 big pieces of thick cut Chashu. Only thing to improve was to remove the tough end which was impossible to chew up. Soup was creamy and tasty. I wish it was a little lighter on sodium level. Overall good value and I would recommend this ramen place.

Google
Pretty good ramen for heat lovers. I've had the scorpion before and it didn't disappoint. Tried the coconut this time, and while I was expecting a stronger flavor like tom yum, it was creamy and spicy and pretty decent. Will definitely be back to try other ones.

Yelp
First time visiting since they re-branded to Ramen Butcher. I was happy to see all my favourites from when they were Ramen Gaoh still on the menu (yuzu shio, yokohama iekei, tsukemen), but was excited to try their newer dishes too. I got the classic ramen and added an egg. Perfect in my opinion. Loved the rich, creamy broth; thin noodles that took in all the flavour; chashu that wasn't overly fatty; and a decent amount of toppings (green onion, mushroom, red ginger). My food came quickly and the servers were nice and attentive. The one thing -- and this is why I decided to rate 4 instead of 5 stars -- is that the restaurant is really cold. It's not pleasant to dine in, especially now in winter.

Yelp
My family and I came here for dinner. We were lucky that we got a table right away. The restaurant has space inside, plus space outside (which is covered or that is extended from the restaurant). We were seated at this "covered" space outside the restaurant. Due to the cold weather, the restaurant included a big rectangular heater above our dining table but it was very unpleasant because the heater flew the heat air out and it was really hot flowing above our heads and faces. We requested to move inside as a few customers left. Luckily we got seats at the bar table. It was more comfortable. Ramen Butcher was famous for tsukemen, so we ordered a tsukemen with cha shu, spicy tsukemen with chicken kaarage and one tan tan tuskhmen. We added green salad to go with the ramen. The green salad tasted a bit weird. Not sure if it was the sauce or something else. The presentation was not great. Based on the flavour and presentation, it lost to the one from Horin Ramen on Robson Street in downtown Vancouver. The one from Horin Ramen tasted excellent with different varieties in the dish, plus its presentation was beautiful even though it was a simple dish. Regarding the tsukemen, the sauce or broth was quite liquidy. Not like a good real tsukemen that I used to have at other ramen restaurants. The customer service was fine. They served like other restaurants. No complaint about the customer service. We all felt the Ramen Butcher in Chinatown was much better.

Yelp
This ramen shop, formerly known as Ramen Gaoh, has reopened as Ramen Bucher. They offer a variety of ramen options and side dishes. Some of their spicy ramen dishes seem to be quite popular. We ordered the Green Basil Ramen, Yuzu Shio Ramen, and Truffle Gyoza. The Green Basil Ramen was very unique. I could taste the herbs and Parmesan cheese flavor in the soup--such a delicious item! The Yuzu Shio Ramen had a noticeable yuzu flavor with the first sip; however, the flavor seemed to weaken as I ate more. The soup was light, which I prefer. I also really enjoyed the nitamago (flavored egg) and menma (flavored bamboo), as they were very flavorful. The Truffle Gyoza was a bit disappointing. The truffle aioli was a little weak, and the shredded cheese on top could have been more melted. However, the gyoza itself was delicious. I like their ramen menu and the concept. I will visit to try other items on my next visit.

Yelp
This is a small Ramen joint that can easily be missed if you're not looking well but it packs a huge punch when it comes to flavor and tastes. When you walk in, there is a covered outdoor seating area that has bench seating. They have about space for 10-15 folks to eat indoors. The service it's good and usually authentic Japanese workers. It is good to get a Japanese perspective when it comes to japanese food. They have multiple variety of ramen and all are amazing. Tthey also have options for small sharing plates like karaage and gyoza. Definitely love this place and can't wait to return

Yelp
This was my first time trying Ramen Gaoh. Their prices are standard and there's plenty of seating, including a patio. While it's not as good as the ramen restaurants downtown, it'll satisfy your cravings! Original Miso Ramen - The toppings were tasty. You can choose between rich or light broth. We chose light, and the broth was still flavourful. Classic Ramen - I added an egg. You can also get an extra bowl of thin noodles for free! Mini Chashu Don - They offer combos with any ramen + gyoza or donburi. We chose the mini chashu don. The meat was tender and juicy.

Yelp
One of the most pathetic dining experiences I've ever had. The restaurant was so cold that the laughably lukewarm broth created the impression that it was steaming hot, given the steam rising from it. When I wasn't watching the non-kitchen staff put on heavy jackets to handle the cold, I entertained myself with my visible breath, longing for the experience to end. The food did nothing to make up for it. Biting into the ramen eggs and the chashu from the chashu-don was like biting into salt bricks; the salt chunks were literally crunching between my teeth. When I left and stepped outside (snowing that day), I initially thought that the weather had warmed up a little, then realized it was actually because of how damn cold the restaurant was. I don't know what the Chinatown location is like, but don't bother with the Burnaby joint. I already suffered to bring you this review; there's no point in you doing the same.

Yelp
Partner and I came to try some of their new vegan items - the gyozas, tantan tsukemen, and cold tantan ramen. Unfortunately, we were very underwhelmed. The soups were flat and lacking in flavor, and the noodles were undercooked. Very mediocre. Also, the cold tantan ramen barely even included any toppings... there were like 5 bamboo shoots and 1 bokchoi? Gyozas were soggy and unappetizing. They tasted borderline inedible. I guess...Props for effort on making the vegan items? I would not recommend this place (at least for the vegan menu) though. Definitely one of the worst bowls of ramen I've ever had.

Yelp
Came back again and enjoyed it just the same! It wasn't the first time hahah but it was still awesome

Yelp
I tried the classic ramen and original miso ramen. The classic ramen has very fine/thin noodles and the miso ramen comes with thick noodles. If you prefer the chewy and bouncy texture of noodles, I'd recommend getting the miso ramen with thicker noodles. Classic ramen: The classic ramen pork broth was creamy yet light. The classic ramen came with one free refill of noodles. The free refill of extra thin noodles was only available for the classic, red spicy, and black garlic ramen. Cost was $15.50. Miso ramen: You get an option to pick light or rich (fattier) broth for the miso ramen. The miso ramen was slightly saltier than the classic ramen but the taste of miso was very subtle. Cost was $15.95. Each bowl of ramen costs about $15-19 per person. Service was prompt and the food also came out quickly. There was patio seating for bigger groups and bar/regular table seating inside.

Yelp
My friend introduced me to Ramen GAOH today in Burnaby near Hastings and Willingdon. Really impressed by the deliciousness and filling portion for a decent price! Some noodle orders come with an optional extra order of noodles, included in the price. Some vegan options. My friend got the Scorpion Ramen ($17.50) which was a slightly lighter bowl of noodles but still a fair portion. Based on his previous visits, he suggested the Tsukemen, and we tried the fried rice, which comes with instructions at the table for what to do. Spicy Tsukemen ($18.95) -Tsukemen is house-made thick noodles in special dipping soup with pork chunks. Comes with karaage (deep fried chicken) or chashu. Noodles can be hot or cold. -Spicy Tsukemen is tossed in house-made spicy sauce that contains ground pork. -I didn't find the spicy sauce particularly spicy. It doesn't come pre-tossed so if you find it too spicy you could spoon it aside. Or if you already mixed it into your noodles, you could try washing the lot in the "dipping soup" provided. -Also had half a boiled egg, a square of seaweed, and some pickled vegetable. -Apparently you dip the noodles into the soup before you eat it but I didn't find it particularly efficient and just threw all my noodles into the sauce. The noodles did not try to sponge up the sauce and become mushy but instead remained al dente. -The dipping soup on its own is on the salty side but also deeply flavourful and worth finishing up for the small pork chunks. -Overall a very flavourful and delicious bowl, with a generous and filling portion of noodle. Teppanyaki Fried Rice Combo ($9.95) -Sizzling hot plate with Japanese style fried rice. Topped with diced pork, green onion, butter, and garlic. -The fried rice is very tasty and price for portion is okay. Mostly however this was a fun interactive novelty: There are instructions at the table for pouring the beaten egg into the hot dish and stirring your rice into the cooking egg. -Considering it was delicious I think the price for portion is okay. Works nicely as an appetizer to share. Open from 11.30am. No reservations.

Yelp
Nice place truly Japanese own, I order the Scorpion level two for both options and guys it is spicy and numb for a while but is good I would say is like others tantan style but instead of just ground meat they include two pieces of pork chashu I suggest come and try

Yelp
Very nice atmosphere with hand sanitizers at every table and barriers between tables. It definitely does not feel like a typical small cramped ramen shop. Excellent service as well - shoutout to our server Kai! He was the most efficient, friendly and interesting server ever. Red Spicy Ramen: Perfect amount of spiciness for me, and it already comes with an egg which is a bonus. Thick slices of chashu that is flavourful and not too fatty overall. I added bamboo shoots to my order - great portions for the price and well marinated, BUT it had a very strong pepper taste which I was not used to. I'm a huge fan of bamboo shoots, but I probably wouldn't order it again here. The egg was superb though, marinated thoroughly with a perfectly soft texture. Black Garlic Ramen: classic order, I've gotten this a few times and it doesn't disappoint. Very aromatic black garlic and soup base. Not too oily/heavy. Comes with a good portion of noodles already, but you can also get 1 free order of extra noodles (one per ramen) - just ask the server. Truffle Gyoza (not pictured) ~$9: this was disappointing. It was quite oily and had an awkward glob of cheese on it. I didn't taste the truffle aioli at all either. The gyoza itself was pretty good, just a tad bit too salty for my liking. I may consider getting the regular gyoza's next time. Definitely not worth the price either.

Yelp
We happened to try Ramen Gaoh by chance. We found parking right outside their entrance and the hubby was hungry! And they had quite a few vegetarian options :) Got the spicy chestnut miso ramen and vegetarian gyoza. Gyoza was ok, the matcha flavor didn't go well, wouldn't order them again. The ramen had good flavor but it was too salty! We thought maybe they put extra tare since my husband which was the spiciest ramen and good amount of salt. But when we asked they said that's how it tastes. Staff is friendly.

Yelp
Hidden gem in Burnaby North. Really Japanese place with Japanese chefs and Japanese waitress and delicious really Japanese ramen and a variety of Japanese deliciousness . We had original miso ramen combo with gyozas , original karage, salad and edamame . Marina offered a very professional courteous and fast service. All was delicious culinary and they have also a great variety of Japanese beers . Cosy place , affordable and generous portions . It is a place we should visit again !!!

Yelp
I believe Ramen Gaoh is associated with the Ramen Butcher in Chinatown... both so good!! I definitely prefer Ramen Gaoh 1. It's closer to my house 2. The menu has a little more options. I got the Szechuan spicy ramen and my partner got the miso. I vetoed the Szechuan peppers because I'm not a fan of the numbing feeling but the spice was super spicy and so flavourful! Love the broth, rich, creamy, not too salty, and we both didn't leave a drop! I also appreciate the free kaedama, but it's definitely not needed but why not get it and share?! I have yet to find an abundance of delish ramen in Langley as I have moved and am now even farther from Ramen Gaoh and the Ramen Butcher. Open another location in Langley?!

Yelp
Very impressive, flavourful, and rich vegan ramen. Their three vegan ramens caught my attention, so I had to try them out. My wife and I did a lunch take-out order during the week, and ordered the Spicy Chestnut Miso Ramen ($14.50) and Spicy Sesame Tantan Tsukemen $14.95). The order was ready in under 15 mins. Very good service. The chestnut miso ramen had a really thick and rich broth, with a nice blend of miso and soymilk. It was quite intensely flavoured, almost too over-the-top, but I very much enjoyed it. Generous portion of wheat noodles (not the spinach/kale noodles that many ramen places are putting in their vegan ramens), and a nice assortment of other toppings (bamboo, corn, nori, and wood ear mushrooms). Very tasty. 4/5 The tsukemen's broth was absolutely top notch: not too salty, yet rich and nutty with the sesame character really expressed. The noodles were a bit thicker than in the chestnut ramen -- just as tasty. The minced soy meat was another nice touch, which adds texture to the soup. Other than that, there were bamboo shoots and a single piece of bok choy -- would've been nice to have more bok choy / toppings in general, but it's a minor complaint. Overall, this was delicious. 4.5/5 Overall, reasonably priced, very tasty and creatively designed dishes. I'll definitely return. Recommended.

Yelp
Decent ramen place in Burnaby Heights. Parking is available along Hastings, as well as the side streets. The owners are the same as Gojiro and Ramen Butcher, so the reputation for quality is already there. Yes the ramen is good. Just like Gojiro, the spiciest (Level 3) and most numbing (Level 3) are easily tolerable. In other words, the spiciness is "North American spicy". A wee bit disappoint in this respect. The quantity of food here is noticeably less than Gojiro. Maybe I'm just spoiled with the serving sizes over there, but I left hungry.
google avatar

Allison K.

Yelp
I love ramen noodles and have tried many places in the lower mainland. I like Ramen Gaoh because there are lots of choices to tweak your bowl of noodles to your liking. I really like that their "spicy levels" includes not only choices of spice level but also your choice of numbness. I thought this was hilarious and on point haha Good flavours, good service, clean establishment. I will definitely go back when I'm in the area.

Yelp
Its nice to see a new ramen shop on the Heights. If you don't know, Ramen Gaoh is part of the Menya Group, which have trendy associated/sister restaurants in Vancouver; Ramen Gojiro and The Ramen Butcher. Ramen Gaoh's menu seems to be focusing on the flavour of miso. Now if you don't care much for miso ramen or the flavour of miso, then I suggest you go else where. They currently have 4 types of ramen on their menu. A spicy blended miso, white miso, red miso and a vegetarian ramen. They also serve traditional pork and cabbage gyoza. But they put a twist on it by changing the flavour profiles with the variety of flavour toppings. You can try the Okonomiyaki or even the truffle oil and Parmesan cheese. Which they also serve at The Ramen Butcher. Lastly they seemed to have carried on and brought over karaage (deep fried boneless chicken) that is featured in all three restaurants. And honestly you can't go wrong with good o' chicken bites. I do appreciate the fact that on the menu it does show where they're importing the miso from in Japan. The discription of how the flavours of the miso in the ramen are pretty spot on. Would I come back? For that price point, I kind of expected more. Perhaps my expectation were too high. Give it a try! Especially in these cold months!

Yelp
Tried out their shiro miso ramen with an added egg. For $1.50, you get a whole marinated egg. This egg had a soft yolk, but wasn't super runny which is good for a bowl of ramen. I noticed there was quite a lot of beansprouts, but underneath there was plenty of noodles. I liked the noodles because they were a bit thicker and chewier. The broth tasted like what the description said. It was a mellower broth that wasn't too salty. I liked the toppings that came with it and it was overall a satisfying bowl of ramen. It's not surprising I enjoyed their ramen, as they are part of the same group including ramen gojiro and ramen butcher. With ramen butcher being one of my favourite ramen places, I am glad I was able to enjoy their ramen here. Service was good, especially since we were seated in the outside area. I would recommend coming here for ramen if you're in the area.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night and got the Shiro Miso ramen and a side of the Japanese curry rice. I was surprised how thick the pork in the bowl was. However, wasn't a big fan of the ramen because I found the Shiro Miso ramen to be a little too strong of a buttery taste - it felt like it coated my whole throat (or was it the white soybean paste, I'm not sure?) and the broth lacked depth in the flavours. I found it a little too much for me to finish the whole bowl. For the Japanese curry rice, the rice was delicious (maybe I just enjoy Japanese rice.. heh), but I found the curry to be average. It just tasted like a light curry minced beef rice. I've heard good things about the scorpion ramen- it's too bad I can't take spicy!
google avatar

Carolyn L.

Yelp
I had the scorpion noodle level 1 since I do not like it numbing spicy. Level 2 and 3 just mean you get scoops of chili on it. I do not know what is in the broth but it is tasty and has a very "Chinese" soup flavor. Maybe there are common Chinese spices in it. It is not exactly "mala" but has hint of it in the level 1 ramen. The ramen is chewy and has bite to it which I like. The gyozas are average and not worth the add-on. I do like the enclosed patio area which is heated and so welcomed during the cold weather. The tables are placed close together and do not make the most comfortable dining place. I will say this is a place to just eat and go. Parking can be found on the street and around the block. This place is not so wow that I will make a trip just for the ramen. Come here if you live in the area though. It is decent. This is under the same management as Ramen Gojiro and The Ramen Butcher.
google avatar

Halei J.

Yelp
This place was just ok. I had really high expectations for this place because it is the sister restaurant of The Ramen Butcher which is my favorite ramen joint in the city. I had the aka miso ramen, the flavours were kinda lacking and the chashu was a bit thick for my liking. There is street parking in the front on Hastings and our server was very nice and friendly.........

H H.

Yelp
Hot YVR day! We decided to try some ramen for dinner Pic 1; Cold Spicy Sesame Tantan ramen Pic 2: cold yuzu shio match ramen I was not sure how spicy the Tantan ramen will be, so they put the hot sauce in a small cup and I could add the spiciest to my liking. Will definitely visit this place again

Yelp
Pretty good ramen all around. Tonkatsu flavor is great, I love their meat. Curry tonkatsu rice - great tonkatsu and curry flavor. They have truffled gyoza which is killer good. Also two outdoor tables for covid. Would go again.
google avatar

Kristi K.

Yelp
Walked by here while walking down hastings. Since this whole covid virus happened I've been really craving ramen! I decided hey why not just try this place. I just ordered two tonkatsu classic ramen. I took it home and added more green onions and crushed sesame seeds. The broth at first when I tried it it seemed the flavour was a little strange. Didn't taste very porky more like fishy in a way. After a few more bites with the noodles I began liking it more and started really enjoying my ramen I ended up eating the whole broth. The chasu was giant very thick. I would of liked it sliced thinner and maybe more than just one giant slice. Just looks more appealing to the eyes if it's like that in my opinion.. I think a few adjustments and they could have really great ramen I did like this ramen it fixed my ramen craving. Maybe I can go back there one day when the virus is open and enjoy it in the restaurant!

Yelp
The ramen adventure continues and this time we returned to Ramen Gaoh for our second run. The first was when they first opened which left a good impression for us to come back and see how it maintains their quality. We ordered their spicy Miso and butter corn Miso ramen as well as their spicy teriyaki sauce chicken karage! The spicy Miso ramen was on point with a good hit of spice, great for moderate spicers. For spice goers get their scorpion ramen! On a whole, the ramen noodles are well done and the thickness ensures very bite you take will slurp up those delicious broth! The butter corn Miso ramen is great for those who like a non-spice option. The creamy butter is mixed into the broth and brings out subtle sweetness thanks to the corn, a great choice!
google avatar

Kay F.

Yelp
Great place for ramen in Burnaby Heights with good variety. Very rich and tasty broth.
google avatar

Cynthia S.

Yelp
Ramen Gaoh offers a variety of ramen, dons and appetizers to choose from. We liked that they gave you the option to make your ramen a combo if you're feeling extra hungry. Instead of just having one spicy ramen option, they had two! I liked how the scorpion ramen let you choose both spicy and numbing levels! Another thing to note is that they offer a free refill of noodles here if you want some at the end of your meal. Just make sure you save some broth when you're done if you want more noodles! I got the yuzu chicken ramen. I liked how the broth was chicken based because it remained light enough for you to taste hints of citrus from the yuzu. With that being said, we could have done with more flavor to the soup because it was quite bland compared to your typical tonkotsu. There were a few slices of chicken "chashu" which really meant chicken breast and a couple chicken truffle wontons. Grayson had all of it but he said it was pretty tasty and that the truffle in the wonton was quite interesting. The noodles were cooked on the softer side and they were thinner so if you're one to enjoy a bite to your ramen, this might not be the best choice for you.
google avatar

AQ C.

Yelp
Don't come here expecting to eat a traditional bowl of ramen. We ordered the scorpion ramen (level 2 spicy and level 1 numbing). I felt like I was eating a bowl of Chinese Szechuan noodle soup. I also think the numbing is an acquired taste and something I don't enjoy myself personally. The noodles were ok, but didn't taste fresh or made in house. Each bowl came with 1 slice of fatty pork and some minced pork which wasn't anything amazing. Overall it wasn't a great blend of flavour and I left feeling a tad sick. I haven't tried the other flavours, but I would probably skip going here and head to another ramen joint.
google avatar

Yelp
Go to Ramen place in Burnaby! We Skip from Ramen Gaoh all the time. And it's always the black garlic and spicy ramen. Their noodles must be house made because it's chewy goodness (Not like the store bought noodles at santouka). The ramen is still yummy even when ordered through Skip, and to me that says a lot! Their soup is creamy and hearty. My husband doesn't love ramen because he finds it pricy for 2 pcs of meat (which I agree) but he will never say no to ramen gaoh or ramen butcher!
google avatar

Debby D.

Yelp
My friend and I met up on a Monday at this spot for some late afternoon munchies (4:15 pm) which was a welcome break from his crazy day at work. We ordered completely off the appetizer menu: two different chicken karrages, one gyoza, edame and salads. Everything was perfect with chilled beer and we both left too full for dinner!!!

Yelp
I enjoyed their tsukemen ramen. The dipping broth was rich but not too rich or salty. The thick noodles were perfect for soaking up the broth. I got the tsukemen with karaage instead of chashu. Their karaage is nicely seasoned and is great if you prefer less batter and more chicken. The dish was a bit unbalanced though, with a large bowl of noodles but only two small pieces of karaage. Their classic miso ramen was a bust unfortunately. Way too much garlic flavour (floating minced garlic bits with every spoonful) that overpowered the miso flavour. Also, it didn't come with a soft boiled ramen egg. The chashu was melt in your mouth tender though. I would return to try their other ramen flavours. Their scorpion ramen and tan tan tsukemen piqued my interest.

Yelp
I was totally mind blown from the fact that Ramen Gaohs' owner is ran by the same owners of Ramen Butcher and Ramen Gojiro :ooooo The service was pleasant! The staff were very welcoming :) our water service was great too, they've manage to make it a full glass when the glass is half way through. We ordered the Teriyaki Spicy Chicken Karaage, the Okonomi Takoyaki, Shiro Miso Ramen, and the Aka Miso Ramen. The Teriyaki Spicy chicken karaage wasn't that spicy at all - but the flavours of the sauce did make the chicken delicious :) The okonomi takoyaki was delicious! Who would've thought of having okonomi sauce on a takoyaki - game changer for my taste The ramen was good, but the noodle and soup ratio wasn't there for me. I didn't get to finish most of my ramen so I took it to-go. I wish there was a way to customize your noodles, but they do have that customizable spicyness level. I'm willing to return to this ramen joint if I'm in the area though :)

Yelp
It was my first time trying Ramen Gaoh! I had an amazing experience. We ordered the signature scorpion ramen (level 3 spicy, level 2 numb), aka ramen plus a soft-boiled egg, shiro ramen, and truffles gyoza. The server originally seated us in the patio with heaters, but when a table opened up inside, she offered us the choice of moving to the inside table. I thought that was very considerate of her because most servers would not suggest to move tables, as it is quite an inconvenience. The quality of the food was very good too, especially the truffles gyoza. It was a very creative take on traditional gyozas.

Yelp
If you like spicy ramen, this is the right place to go! Their signature ramen is Scorpion Ramen, and I think it's my favourite spicy ramen in town. You get to choose the level of Spiciness and level of Numbness for the Scorpion Ramen, and they actually put effort in the soup base. I also love the Truffle Gyoza they serve, it has a strong Truffle flavour but I wish one order of gyoza come in 6pcs instead of 5pcs. I love this place and definitely recommend you guys to try it out!

Yelp
2.5/5 + 0.5 for the egg. A part of the Ramen Butcher and Ramen Gojiro group, Ramen Gaoh is a ramen joint located on Willingdon and Hastings. The servers here know Japanese, but don't expect authentic Japanese ramen here. We ordered a Shio Ramen and Scorpion Ramen. My bf had the Scorpion Ramen and his overall thought was that "it was decent, but all you can taste is spiciness and saltiness". He was expecting more complex flavours. I had the Shio Ramen which came with seaweed, half an egg, truffle wontons, chicken, onions, and pepper and yuzu shaving. The broth was salty, but lacking in depth. The chicken chashu wasn't juicy, but not dry. The yuzu shaving added a very subtle citrus flavour to the broth - you really have to try to find it though. The egg was marinated and salty. The truffle wontons had a noticeable truffle smell, but quite bland in taste. I found the filling a little dry. What bugged us were the noodles. My bf enjoyed the thick noodles, but my thin noodles soaked up a lot of the soup so the portion of noodles to soup was off. The first round of noodle refill is free. We found the texture of the noodle refill harder than the original noodles. They seem underdone. Maybe we had to leave them in the soup so it soaks up the soup? This seems a little silly though. Service was good, but the restaurant wasn't full when we came. It's nice that they have patio seating too! Overall, we thought the meal was average and probably won't be back.

Yelp
It's so nice to finally have a Ramen place on the way home from work! My boyfriend and I both ordered the signature Scorpion Ramen. I ordered mine with a Level 3 spiciness and 1 numbing and he ordered his with level 3 spiciness and level 3 numbing. I would definitely recommend ordering a 3 spiciness and 1 numbing if you like spicy food, but want to actually enjoy eating the ramen comfortably! Having both level 3 and 3 was spicy enough in my opinion that it should be a spicy ramen challenge! The ramen itself comes with 2 slices of chashu which was a little chewy, bamboo shoots, ground pork, and greens. We also ordered the Spicy Garlic Gyozas. The gyozas were cooked perfectly crisp and the meat inside was seasoned perfectly. Being sat on the patio we felt a little forgotten as we needed to ask for our drinks to be refilled, and had to go inside to ask for the bill, but that didn't change how delicious the food tastes!

Yelp
I've been four times here and liked it so far... but not that much. Every time I feel the same when I walk out: it was good, but that is it. I usually order one of the limited units ramen which are cheaper (maybe smaller size too?), but they come with limited ingredients... but broth still tastes good. Combo options are always welcome, and I liked their karaage and gyozas... I'll repeat coming as one of my lunch options, but ramen can be much better somewhere else

Yelp
My boyfriend and I decided to try this place out (we usually go to Hakkaku Ramen down the street) and we must say, we left disappointed. I'll start off with a couple positive points: - The restaurant has a nice interior, being modern and well lit. - The staff all seemed friendly, greeting us promptly and thanking us on the way out. - There is free parking nearby and the location is easily accessible by transit if you don't drive. Now onto some constructive criticism... - As someone who is an advocate for sustainable living, I wasn't very happy to see that Ramen Gaoh offers disposable chopsticks on every table. You are a RAMEN RESTAURANT... please ditch the single use chopsticks and invest in reusable ones! - I tried the Misotarian ramen (their vegetarian ramen) and my boyfriend tried their Scorpion ramen (spicy ramen). Sadly, both lacked in flavour, which is so important in ramen. The broth of my vegetable soup was very bland and the only topping that seemed to offer any flavour was the bamboo shoots. The Scorpion ramen was spicy, but didn't have any base flavour to it. Both broths were quite thick compared to other ramen we have tried, and had an almost pasty/starchy texture to them. Overall we didn't enjoy the food here and would not come back. Especially for the price, this ramen is not outstanding.

Yelp
Not the best taken noodle place to eat! Not the cheapest place to eat! We went in and ordered 5 different of noodles. None of us was happy! It is one of the restaurants where I will be back for a long long time!

Yelp
I believe they're opened by the same owners as Chinatown's Ramen Butcher. The restaurant has a nice decor and very clean inside. They also have taken good precaution due to covid-19. The servers were friendly and helpful. I told them it was my first time there and they carefully explained their menu to me. I decided to order their Scorpion ramen, because the waitress said it's their award winning bowl. You can select 3 different levels of spiciness and numbness (due to the Szechuan peppercorns). I ordered level 2 for both but I think I can order level 3 next time. Underneath the charsu pork are a lot of minced ground pork. I think they can add more noodles to their order, but the second order of noodles is free, so technically you can order more. The broth was super flavourful and packed with a punch. It's greasy for sure, but it coats all the noodles perfectly and I can't stop slurping them. I also made it a combo and added 3 gyozas, they were very standard, and I don't think I will order it again. Overall well done ramen and no wonder it won an award. I look forward to going back and trying other ramens on their menu.

Yelp
I came here the day after the grand opening but fortunately didn't have to wait too long as we arrived at an earlier dinner time. My husband and I both had the scorpion ramen. I ordered mine at level 2 spiciness and numbness and my husband had level 1. If you like your heat, level 2 delivers that without compromising on flavour. This dish doesn't have your usual slices of chashu and instead comes with ground meat. Others have noted that they found the other flavours mild or bland but not the scorpion. I found the soup thick and flavourful and the portions were generous (perfect for hubby and I had a bit of leftover). We also ordered the spicy gyozas. They were perfectly cooked with a crusty on the wrapper and the filling was very tender. Super happy that a decent ramen place opened close to home and we won't have to drive into vancouver each time we have a craving!

Yelp
I finally made another visit to this restaurant at 3 pm for a late lunch. We were the only customers so it made service very efficient. I ordered the winter special clam chowder ramen with a side of gyoza. It was a New England chowder and tonkotsu broth bowl of ramen with two whole clams, watercress, red onion, Parmesan cheese, mushrooms and a slice a bacon. I would have liked more clams in the actual broth. There were a few bits and pieces of clams, but not much overall. The noodles had a good chew. Bacon was definitely made in advance and had lost its crispiness. It was good to try once, but I would order the more traditional options next time. Gyoza was made well. The dumplings were nicely fried and filling was seasoned well.

Yelp
We came the 1st day it was opened (Tuesday) just around 6pm, waited for about 20mins since there was a $6 promo for all ramen hence the amount of people 。Nice to know that the outdoor patio was covered and heated 。Ordered the shiro and aka ramen, one of them as a combo with 3 gyoza,as well as chicken karaage 。Aka ramen has a stronger miso flavour while shiro was more creamy. However the overall taste was lighter than usual ramen joints, if you find other places too strong/ salty, you'll like Gaoh. If not, Gaoh will be bland. Personally, I prefer the subtle taste. 。Theres a plentiful helping of noodles given the price (generous compared to Jinya/Santouka) 。karaage didn't seem that fresh, obvious taste that it has been frozen for a while 。same company as gojiro, the ramen butcher, so similar style

Yelp
I went to ramen gaoh on a weekday so it wasn't busy, I ordered a ramen and a side of chicken karaage, after the first bite I saw the meat wasn't completely white so I was concerned if it was fully cooked, I asked the waitress and she brought it back to kitchen and asked and told me it's cooked twice, and said if I want another one and I said yes please. After couple of minutes she brought out another chicken karaage and it's still have some redness/ pinkish in the meat so I thought maybe it's the meat itself that's not fresh or something. But the waitress didn't follow up or ask me how was the second batch, thought the customer service isn't that good... so likely I won't be going back!

Yelp
Ok. The Hakkaku is closed in the evening for recent weeks. This seems to be the only choice of ramen nearby. Environment is good. Not busy at 6. The service is sweet like other desirable restaurants. The menu is confusing indeed. It looks like they only have miso kinds ramen. Unfortunately it is not my appetite. So i just order a signature spicy miso ramen. Ramen: 4/5 ramen itself is not very disappointing. Gyoza:4.5/5 almost perfect Fried chicken: 3.5/5 kind of cold already, looks like heated using microwave Overall i would give 4 stars. But i don't think i will be back in a couple of days

Yelp
Atmosphere: Enough seating inside. Price: Market value. Customer service: Friendly and ramen came out in timely manner. Food: The good news is that you get to pick you heat level, however, even at their so cold mild it was hot but then again I am not used to hot foods and I hate it, however, burning aside, I actually really liked the ramen and since it is close to my house I like to come here. My fav is the beef and veggie.

Yelp
I went to this place with 2 friends for a quick bite. First of all, the entrance door looks like a locked gate (doesn't invite you to get in at all). Food quality is even good, but the waitress was a real problem. She didn't satisfy my request when i asked to make a variation on my Ramen, than she brought the bills without asking if we wanted a separate bill or not, and she even switched my bill with my friend s. This is how a terrible customer service, makes me feel like I will never come back to this place..
