The Ranee has a veneer of luxury but does not follow through with service.
I understand that the hotel was renovated from an older building and there are limitations to it's layout due to that. However, some of the highlights it boasts feel like false advertising. We were told we had a "private staircase", which meant we had to carry our luggage unassisted up 2 flights of stairs as the elevator is not accessible from the ground floor nor the floor to the suites. This wouldn't have been an issue if staff had assisted with baggage, which is a normal convenience at "luxury" hotels. We had the Elizabeth Suite, one of the most expensive rooms in the hotel, and it was underwhelming at the price of 550RM/night. Our balcony had a wall blocking half of the view. It is genuinely a hazard for guests as they have to duck under the wall while stepping down 30cm to access the balcony.
My husband got sick when we arrived so we spent a lot of time in the hotel. There was a concert happening at the riverfront 3 of the 5 days we were there. This is not the hotels fault but just be aware that this area gets noisy and the suite walls are not insulated. We could hear sound equipment being tested as early as 8am with music continuing for hours in the evening, even on weekdays.
The breakfast is not much more than a few pieces of fruit and bread. I would discourage anyone from eating here when there are so many great local shops around the corner. We did really enjoy the juice bar. The restaurant food was fine in a pinch. There were a few times when the restaurant was backed up and we would wait an hour for room service. When we called to ask why our food had not arrived, they said the chef was on break. This occurred once at 5:30pm which is normal dinner time. The restaurant seemed to be understaffed at peak times.
Otherwise, the staff were friendly and accommodated any request I had. The location is very convenient for exploring Carpenter Street. The hotel was clean, just not at all worth the price we paid.
