My dad likes to frequent Red Brick for coffee and chats with his friends, but this past Saturday it was him, my mom, and I wandering around Sidney and shopping when hunger struck us. We decided to go into Red Brick for lunch. I had been before and had a Caesar salad and wasn't honestly blown away but with their varied menu of soups, sandwiches, and salad there was bound to be something new to try.
Their lunch special ($12.95) was a beef dip & coleslaw which my dad ordered; my mom and I had white chowder & the Red Brick salad ($7.95). Food arrived fairly quick - first impressions: Beef dip seemed overpriced since it was just a sandwich with a very small side of coleslaw. Dad enjoyed the sandwich but said the coleslaw was too sweet. The chowder and salad was a perfect sized meal, but the chowder was honestly anything BUT a chowder. Yes, it had chopped clams in it but it did not have that creamy, almost ocean-y taste that a traditional white chowder has. Really this soup was not even that white and I would be surprised if there was any cream in it at all. It tasted like potato-vegetable soup - I even said to my mom it tasted like some kind of stew. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't chowdery either, so it left me wanting more of what I wanted - which was real creamy white chowder.
The Red Brick salad, on the other hand, was pretty dang good! A bed of fresh greens, mandarin slices, chopped pecans, cheese, red peppers, and chick peas with a side of orange vinaigrette - not your average salad, and it was definitely the rockstar of my lunch.
Red Brick is good, but they could be better. I would come back, and I'll likely do the Red Brick salad since that was by far my favorite part of lunch.
