Yelp
As a first-timer to Mexico City, I relied on lots of reviews, and the Red Tree House was always a top choice. I never found much in the way of detail online so will share what I can here.
The neighborhood: This is in the Condesa / Hipodromo area, which consists of tree-lined streets, lots of joggers and walked dogs, and traffic circles everywhere with cafe's, shops, and restaurants. It's very safe, comfortable, and clean. I would stay in Condesa again, even after visiting the nearby neighborhoods. It's a great place for a morning walk.
The rooms: I had to break up my reservations due to a suite not being available for all the nights I was there, so I got to experience four different rooms. The first night was in a garden room on the first floor. This was a very simple hotel style room with two queen beds, both very comfortable, a TV, a chair, and some cube like things you could sit on. Like other hotel rooms, not really where you want to hang out. The french doors opened right up to the courtyard, where breakfast can be had in the morning, and happy hour in the evening. This room was $100 a night.
The next three nights we stayed in the Lafayette Suite. A third floor suite with a separate bedroom, a kitchenette, dining area, and sitting area with two small couches and wrap-around glass paned walls. This was my favorite area to sit, with birds and trees enshrouding the space and offering privacy, despite being right above the communal courtyard. I loved this room for its size and comfort. My only complaint would be the smaller shower. $200 a night.
Night five was in the Frida room. A garden room but on the second floor. One bed and again, a smaller shower. Still a very comfortable room, but I missed the couches and fridge. $100
Night six, our last night, we ended up in the Terrace Suite. The "terrace" is huge, and offers two sitting areas. One is a bistro set overlooking the street. Lots of planters with small trees and beautiful plants. We loved sitting out here, and enjoyed our morning coffee. (Another couple mentioned the noise staying in this suite from the street, but I didn't really notice anything.) The interior has a kitchen with a seating area for two, and an adjacent sleeping area with large bed and TV. Next to the bed are two chairs and a coffee table right next to the floor to ceiling glass panes looking onto the terrace. The other side of the bed has another small terrace overlooking the courtyard. Through a hallway you will find the very large bathroom complete with dual sinks, centerpiece bathtub, and large shower. This room was an entirely different layout than the other suite, and if I were to choose, I would pick this one due to the terrace, even if the other one offered more privacy and quiet. $200.
Happy Hour: Not what you would think. It's beer and wine from 6 to 8 pm, but it's really all about the socializing, meeting friendly world travelers with great stories and recommendations. The staff is always there to greet and welcome, and makes you feel like family.
Breakfast: Every day we had something different. All dishes were pretty light, which was perfect, and all were outstanding. They offer a hot dish, but also have yogurt, breads, cereal, cut fruit, churros etc., sitting out on a long buffet to help yourself. Coffee is self service, and good enough to have a second cup.
The staff: The best part of the place. Everyone is incredibly warm and helpful, consistently going above and beyond. I've never experienced this level of hospitality anywhere, ever. I can't imaging staying anywhere else on my next visit to the city.
If you are even considering a trip to Mexico City, book here well in advance, because it's worth it, unless you are really antisocial, or just plain weird.
