Unfortunately, I have to give a poor review to this resort hotel. Upon arriving, at 8pm at he start of school holidays, we were advised we could not stay at the resort as our youngest was 13 years old. We were told that the ages they had on file were 16, 17 and 19 and that the minimum age is 16. What's worse is that we were told our youngest could stay elsewhere - as if we would just leave her somewhere else. I suggested they must have misheard when I called to book - to which they had that conversation on file. But even if they had misheard, there was no way they were going to let us stay. In a way I understand as other guests may complain. However, I suggested that they should be taking the actual date of birth of everyone upon booking so as to avoid mistakes such as this. Although the initial host was not friendly and quite cold about it, a positive is that the manager I ended up dealing with was nice and understanding. On a bright note, given it was 8pm on the first day of school holidays, and given everywhere I rang around to find us accommodation for the week, or even a couple of days, was sold out, we did find one place which moved rooms around for us to accommodate us all. That was the Oaks in Port Douglas. Luckily for us Port Douglas was so much nicer than Palm Cove, and the Oaks resort was also superior in the rooms and layout. As mentioned, I do understand why the Reef House didn't want us to stay, but the overall experience, not asking for date of births, and telling us to stay in the room where possible so the other guests wouldn't see us, was not how anyone should experience day 1 of their family holiday, especially at such crazily high prices to which the reef hours charges. Again, I wish I could have been more positive but this was my experience and I feel it's important that others know so they don't also find themselves having booked and arriving with children < 16 years old.
