So Christmas Eve and in town with Family and they want to go to their favorite place for lunch, Which we learned has been closed since the PANDEMIC On Tuesdays until today. I had perused the menus online before hand and the pics of the dishes all looked very appetizing. But still wasn't sure exactly what I was getting. We had reservations and were promptly seated on time. The restaurant wasn't very full but that changed pretty quickly as family's streamed in after the lunch on this mild Christmas Eve afternoon. The inside is a low light open dining room with real wood tables, 4 tops, and booths. Lovely flatware and cloth napkins. Our waiter came promptly and took our drink orders and we looked at the menus. One sheet, printed front and back ... I forgot to take pics... but go online because the beautiful pics of the food online, are omitted on the menus handed out. So I had the grilled chicken with grilled vegetables and sweet potatoes. I also had a CUP of Chicken and Sausage Gumbo. I started both before I took my pics, I was particularly hungry this day and kept forgetting to snap them! So the gumbo was good, it had that nice "muddy" taste from the first spoonful.' It was lacking in veg, I found a couple of tiny pieces of celery in it .. but nary a bell pepper or onion, I think maybe they just cooked away? It would have been better if it had had some seafood, especially shrimp, I believe real gumbo has some seafood, but it was already $8 for the cup and I'm sorry I just didn't think it was worth another $8 just to add shrimp to a cup. The grilled chicken was grilled well, a little dry, and had lots of spice but lacked flavor somehow? It was more like a blackened and grilled breast. The homemade BBQ sauce definitely was needed to help it out. The "grilled" vegetables, and I say that because these didn't appear to be grilled. None of them bared any grill markings. They seemed to have the same spice as the chicken and they were oily like they had been saute'd in butter or oil. A shake or two of salt helped them. I loved the combination of vegetables they chose and looked forward to them being GRILLED. So the FAMOUS MAGIC MELTING/pudding/Flan whatever you use to describe them, Sweet Potatoes... they are worth all the HYPE! and they were the highlight of my meal! Sweet, warm and pudding soft with seems to be a brown sugar glaze? Heavenly! My dining partners had a range of things from a BLAT (bacon, lettuce Avocado, Tomato) with fries and he HOOVERED it! Not a spec left and said the bacon was perfect. Another had the lasagna and got a side salad and it was beautiful but huge. Full of frisée, lettuces, tomatoes and all kinds of stuff. I should have took a pic! He said it was fantastic. But the lasagna came and it was a bit odd... he thought it was weird the sausage was a link on the side instead of inside the lasagna. He only ate about half of it... said he didn't like it much but took the rest of it home. One had the chicken piccata with sides and loved everything. So all in all for me this place is hit and miss. But I would return again for the sweet potatoes and I want to try what looks like in the pics online home made onion rings. And they have amazing sounding seafood dishes... I have my EYE on the Pasta Sterling for next time!
