About the Residency Complex
The Residency, Lucknow is a historic British Residency complex located in the heart of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. This site is not a modern residential apartment complex but rather a heritage monument with deep historical significance.
📜 Historical Significance
The Residency was constructed between 1780 and 1800 during the reigns of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daulah and Saadat Ali Khan II as the official residence and office of the British Resident General—Britain’s representative at the court of the Nawab of Awadh.
It became a focal point during the Siege of Lucknow in 1857, one of the most significant battles of the Indian Rebellion (First War of Independence). The British garrison and civilians held out against Indian forces for months.
🏛️ Architecture & Present Condition
The complex originally included multiple buildings with European-style architecture, gardens, church, hospital, barracks, and administrative spaces.

Today, many structures stand in ruins with visible marks of war—cannon shots and damaged walls that tell the brutal tale of the siege. The ruins are preserved with lawns and walkways for visitors.
🪦 Memorial & Museum
Within the complex is a cemetery where about 2,000 British soldiers, women, and children who died during the 1857 siege are buried.
An 1857 Memorial Museum showcases artifacts, documents, and exhibits about the rebellion and the history of the Residency.
