On the Grid : The Resource Exchange

"Resource Exchange began as a way of salvaging what was left after film or stage sets were torn down and otherwise discarded. These days you can find stacks on stacks of meticulously organized fabrics, costumes, building materials, props, office supplies and so much more. Stop by to peruse their offerings, or call in advance if you have something you'd like to donate yourself." - Melissa McFeeters

Made a quick stop while in Philly. The place is huge, with lots of art supplies and other goodies. It’s perfect if you enjoy a scavenger hunt 😁

Google
A great place to find materials if you are an artist, crafter or maker of any kind. The shop is very well organized. This is a place to get inspired and find a good deal.

Google
This place makes it easy to get carried away because the ideas that come surrounded by all the supplies to make something cool. The prices vary a lot… some killer deals and some things that aren’t so worth it. Some space could be better utilized. There’s a section of boxed games and a mystery room that you have to be let into… I think that space could be better used to showcase more inventory, but it’s all still really cute. I wish there was more inventory- and that’s not on them. Bring them your unused stuff!

Google
A little something for anyone who crafts/creates. I found yards of fabric for a fraction of retail price. Plenty of notions available, including packs of buttons for dirt cheap. The place is very warm and the staff were very kind, and very enthusiastic about community. I got a full bag of stuff for less than $30. I would absolutely return.

Google
Some things are okay deals, some things are double retail price. I'm happy it's here but this isn't like the other reuse stores I've been to and is more like an antique store with random craft supplies scattered around

Leanne M

Google
Amazing place to find household and crafting goods, they accept donations of certain items too, be sure to check with them beforehand when donating.

Yolanda Holt

Google
It’s a vintage thrift store, no clothing.

Yelp
This place is great for all kinds of creative people. I've gotten paint there for my acrylic, paint practice, and also papers and postcards for a collage practice. Definitely worth a visit. Bring your credit card because you're bound to find something you love. Or need.

Yelp
My partner came to the Resource Exchange a few weeks ago and found an incredible vinyl album and I knew I had to stop by. I came in early Saturday morning and it was everything I needed to start my weekend off right! The variety of supplies is impressive and everything is reasonably priced. I had to catch my breath when I saw the sewing supplies area (just look at the embroidery floss variety!). While I only came home with a single item, I already know I'll be back to find something new.

Yelp
Apparently this is their new location and it's a great location. I do not know what the old location is like. There is plenty of parking. They do need a sign visible from the street. We're weren't sure if this was right place from the street. It was a very cute store with a vintage vibe. There is a small fiber section with yarn and fabric. Don't expect to find anything in particular. I would not count this location as a "fabric" place. There are a few art supplies. As with any thrift store, you will have an ever-changing inventory. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Discovered them during COVID, so I had to order online and pick up at a pre-scheduled time. They are very organized and friendly. I just wish I could've gone inside, but the virtual store is still great for now! Prices are great on all kinds of art supplies and upcyclable materials! Got a brand new Karim Rashid Bozart chess set for $30!!! I was also gifted a vintage handmade wicker basket from this store. Like many of their items, the basket had been in a movie set. They also offer artist led workshops (when no quarantine is going on). Funky cool store!

Yelp
Best store, hands down. A crafter's paradise; I come here basically every week and there's always something new. Best place to get fabric remnants and just about every art tool/material. Some antique jewlry and furniture as well. Love this place!

Yelp
This place is so much fun. They have a very wide and varied stock for multiple DIY needs. I even managed to find a large box of unglazed ceramic tile that I can use as pizza stones! I went to 6 different stores (including tiling companies) and couldn't find any but it was here at a very inexpensive price! I've started coming here first to find materials for my projects, but everytime I go in I end up thinking up a new project so it can be a bit dangerous for my wallet (but great if you need project inspo!) The staff is really great and helpful. Highly recommend coming here for crafting needs

Yelp
I wish every city had this. A place to donate left over art, craft, sewing supplies - as well as get what you need for your next project

Yelp
RE is the epitome of a hidden gem - what a great little spot! The sign out front says it all - you never know what you're going to find inside. Whether you're scoping out random treasurers or searching for DIY/art/craft supplies, RE is the place to go. I did not necessarily need anything, but walked out with $20 of unique photos. I am not the craftiest person, but am sudden inspired to tackle Pinterest projects. Also, I love that they accept credit cards - and have only a $5 minimum. There is plenty of street parking, and everything is very reasonably priced.

Yelp
I call this store "the fun store" because they have so much treasure to explore. I've bought art, fabric, arts and crafts supplies, and jewelry here! The team who works here is lovely; they are so passionate about sustainability and art and makers. Also--def a good place to get office supplies and Christmas cards!

Yelp
The artist's/creative's/DIYer's dream. I love wandering around in here. You literally will not know what you could find... I particularly get excited at discounted used fine art supplies...I've found carand'ache crayons, artist grade paints, and winsor&newton inks for less than five dollars. TONS of fabric if you're into that. I'm almost hesitant to write anything else in fear others will scour it out! Worth stopping in every so often. Parking or loading is super easy and they take card above $5 purchases. Also love that they support local artists. I knock a star because I am suspecting some little inconsistencies when being rung up...some things just won't be marked, or sometimes a damaged piece's marked down price will be missed (written tiny in pencil in a corner) and rung up normally. But it's understandable, as there is SO MUCH stuff here, but something to be aware of.

Yelp
Do you draw, scrapbook, woodwork, upholster, make props? Check out this place in Kensington. Great prices for some pre-loved art supplies.

Liz N.

Yelp
lots of great supplies, anything from craft stuff (sewing, photography, painting, drawing, etc), to cooking wares, home goods and decor! prices seemed good too. picked up some glitter for a few bucks, 10 pens for $1, and a housewarming gift for a friend. it feels good to shop here and pick up something used before going to a commercial store and having to buy something. new!

Yelp
I stopped by 3 different salvage warehouses this past Sunday in search of some cheap wood with which to build some diy pieces. The resource exchange was the only one that had what I was looking for. They have a random assortment of really cheap wood, some nicer wood and scraps whereas many of the other salvage places have high quality reclaimed wood going for about $7/Sq ft. I came out of the resource exchange with about 12 Sq ft for $4 of a mid grade wood which is $0.33/Sq ft. I could have just gotten scraps and spent about $2 total but they had a nice matching set of interlocking hardwood. My fiance came away with some nice glass bottles for about $1 each which wasn't bad either. My only gripe was that my particular pieces were not priced so I had to take them to the register where they ended up coming up with the price on the spot. All in all though the staff were friendly and they had a decent assortment of things. I would definitely come back if I'm looking for scrap wood and other small items.

Yelp
This place is really all that the other reviews say it is. A home renovators, artists and crafters delight. It's pretty cavernous so give yourself some time to explore. The staff is friendly and helpful. I took a friend here and her head just about exploded. I think more trips are in our future for DIY crafty projects. I scored some ceramic tile to fix a patio table, a serving tray and a zipper (random but needed it for my daughters show and tell lol) My only complaint was that it was cold in there. So my 2 cents is to dress warmly!

Yelp
I had been wanting to go for a long time and finally had the chance to get there today. Finally an awesome place to go where my husband enjoyed himself too. There were so many cool and interesting things to see. I didn't plan on spending money on the first visit because I didn't have much to spare but we ended up spending $7 and we both bought things we wanted and needed. The merchandise was reasonably priced and worth much more then we paid. I will 100 percent be going back at least once a week. They have frames, fabric, rubber stamps, scrap booking items, beads, sewing items,Jewelry, lamps and so much more. Can't wait to go again! The resource exchange is my new best friend. LOL

Yelp
I love popping in here when I have some time to kill. I've scored a lot of art supplies on the cheap. Great place to furnish your home too if your crafty.

Yelp
Just plain wonderful. I found Steadler pencils, a note pad, and markers here being as I'm an artist and could always use some refills. They have a lot of great oddball things here too, such as textiles and buttons. Unfortunately, people do hoard items they don't need and refuse to leave some for those that do need them, much like at PAT, so, you need to get there at a good time.

Yelp
The Resource Exchange reclaims materials from film and theatre sets, businesses, and individuals that would otherwise be sent to landfills. Much of their inventory in the middle of the store is dedicated to leftover office supplies, but they have small home furnishings such as lamps and frames, and an odd assortment of chairs. They have a fascinating amount of variety here, with the whole left side of the warehouse looking like it's out of a museum collection, and the right side being filled with fabrics and yarns and one off items that you would probably not find anywhere else because they are antiquated or out of production, like custom doors and window panes. Street parking nearby was quite easy and free. Staff was extremely helpful in completing my purchase. They are open Wednesday through Sunday and do take credit card. I like that this store has found a niche for holding onto useful things that otherwise would have been abandoned.

Yelp
The Resource Exchange is my absolute favorite place to go to. Every time I walk in there, I always (and I mean always) walk out of there with a new treasure. Perfect for art supplies, home decorations, fabric, wood materials, and so much more, all at a very good price. Even found some Paper Source steals!! Definitely check it out - no doubt :)

Yelp
I love this store. If you are a crafty/D.I.Y. type, the Resource Exchange is your place. I have purchased the following in this second hand goods shop: curtain rods, pillow cases, yarn, knitting needles, books, terra cotta pots, cloth napkins and a hat. All items were either dead-stock-new or in excellent condition. Parking is EXCELLENT wether you drive a car, motorcycle or scooter. Staff at R.E. are friendly, helpful and well-versed. The store sometimes has crafting or art workshops. I plan to start attending those there.

Yelp
Love it here. Such a wide variety of different gadgets, tools, and various odds and ends. I mainly liked the craft selection they have here. Really good prices. Will be going back here.

Yelp
Found these guys through their Craigslist ad. I was searching for lumber, but found so much more. They reclaim materials from stage and movie productions and keep it out of landfills by offering it at low prices to us in the Philly area. They have a little bit of everything that is involved in arts/crafts/light construction. Think about everything that goes into completing a movie set! Props, lighting, staging, wardrobe. They have bits and bobs of nearly any supply you could need for a DIY project. They are easy to get to here in Fishtown and are open easy hours. We got some door hardware, fabrics and foam for reupholstering chairs, some air dried poplar for woodworking projects, pens, carving tools, flooring, and a light fixture. Go if you need something for your current DIY project, but don't be surprised when you find materials and inspiration for five more. Go often, the supplies are always changing.

Yelp
Ive gone her a couple of times so far, i love it and i think anybody who likes rummaging through old, vintage or used stuff will love it too. I came here and brought some oil paints, pencils and paper on one trip and some art books, a hand mirror and a rolling stones 8 track that i cant even use. It was fun

Yelp
This is a really cool place! So many odds and ends and great finds. They just about enough of everything crafty you can think of in addition to the picture frames, dishes, handles and knobs and office supplies. My small complaint was there was no reception at the door or anywhere in the store. (I'm someone who very much appreciates great customer service which includes greeting a customer.) But, I'd go back...saw a few things I may need.

Yelp
A fun place to visit and explore. I like there buttons by the 1/2 pound section and their "miscellaneous stuff" room. I would go more often, but I find the neighborhood a little iffy.

Joanna X.

Yelp
This is a great place! They really have a bit of everything- art supplies (paint, glass, drawing materials, etc) as well as picture frames, wood, some furniture etc. They also have some really unique finds- old art slides, metal etc. Great for the DIY person. Easy to park and the staff is super friendly. Will be heading back after my current project.

Yelp
Love this store. I've taken classes here and even though it's 45 minute drive from me, I try to come monthly because there inventory is always changing. It's a warehouse so don't go when its sweltering hot or freezing cold! Prices are cheap especially for trim and fabric.
google avatar

Kimberly V.

Yelp
Definitely a cool place! has a mix of ready-to-go thrift shop goods as well as materials for the crafty/handy hearted! Went in looking for a dinning table and the selection was pretty slim, but will definitely be back to scoop up some of those picture frames!!

Yelp
Thrift store meets craft store meets estate sale. The Resource Exchange is a smorgasbord of all your crafting, DIY, renovation and decorating needs. I went in today to pick up lattice for a project I am working on, and was completely awestruck at the amount of quality items they had, and their prices! I wandered around and took about 30 mental notes of things I will now shop here for: office supplies, tiles, fabric, yarn, curtains, artwork , so much stuff! They even have a "weird room" with random finds . This store is clean and well organized too. Definitely a place to check out! I see this store becoming very popular in the future.

Madura C.

Yelp
It's a simple awesome store! Very affordable and lots of good collection of fabrics and antiques.

Lisa J.

Yelp
Resource Exchange has become my go-to place for low priced beads & other materials that can be incorporated into mixed media & collage projects. I highly recommend that artists & crafters make this place a regular destination AND donate the supplies, art books, etc. that they no longer need to the R.E. Several of the major thrift shops don't have anywhere near the amount of donated art & craft supplies like this place has. The prices can't be beat, either.
