The Best Hotels in Costa Rica, From Luxury Glamping Sites to Sustainable Resorts

The Retreat, Costa Rica

"Set the scene About 45 minutes west of San Jose airport, along a series of steep windy roads, The Retreat sits in a rainforest atop a 50-acre quartz mountain said to have healing energies. Nature surrounds you at every point of the stay, whether you’re in a treatment room, falling asleep in bed, or dining. It’s popular with solo travelers who, beyond looking for a respite from regular life, are there at a transitional point in their life and hoping to kickstart a transformation. What’s the backstory? Chef, author, and health and wellness life coach Diana Stobo opened The Retreat in 2016, creating a place for guests to focus on nature, nutrition, and wellness in the midst of Costa Rica’s stunning rainforest. Three years later, the Vida Mia spa opened, offering nearly 80 different services from classic aromatherapy massages and facials to a full suite of crystal healing sessions. It’s also the first Ayurvedic healing center in Costa Rica, led by Dr. Shaveta Jasra, an Ayurvedic doctor from Kerala. What’s the wellness concept? Stobo is perhaps best known for her book, Get Naked Fast. And while the book itself may be off-putting to those avoiding overly restrictive diets (it starts with a long list of no-nos, including sugar, dairy, wheat, and meat), the retreat’s overall philosophy is more relaxed. It centers around a mind-body-soul approach to wellness and leans on nature as a healer. What are the signature treatments? There are nine wellness packages, each with a different focus, including emotional healing, better sleep, and weight loss. The newest one, The Big M: Mastering Menopause, was launched in 2023 and aims to help women going through menopause better understand the changes in their body and learn how to balance the shift in hormones through diet, exercise, and lifestyle alterations. The crystal therapies are another unique offering and are meant to bring about physical, emotional, and spiritual healing with the help of crushed crystals like amethyst and rose quartz, bringing forth calmness, luck, acceptance, or empowerment. What makes it different? While they’ve mastered the art of creating a serene environment there, the staff at The Retreat are equally focused on ensuring the transformation that occurs continues after you’ve left. Wellness packages are designed to give you tools to bring home and include, for instance, cooking classes on making plant-based meals, or learning Pranayama, an ancient breathing technique. What else do they offer? Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in Sol Terrace, the plant-filled, open-air dining room, and are largely grain-free and dairy-free (goat cheese or yogurt feature occasionally). Meals lean vegetarian but sides of fish, chicken, and meat are always available. The best part, should you be an indecisive orderer like myself, is that choice is removed. Unless you’re adding on protein, meals are what the chef has designed that day using ingredients from the on-property farm and surrounding area. There is no menu: waiters simply tell you what colorful dish is soon to be presented. Food is delicious and filling; lunch comes with a fun beverage, like watermelon lemonade or hibiscus iced tea. There is a bar open most of the day and evening, where cocktails, mocktails, beer, and organic wines are served. If you do get hungry in between meals, lighter fare can be ordered from the spa’s restaurant menu. At the time of my stay, there was a small fitness center in the spa. In 2024, this will be replaced by a larger space in the forthcoming community center, which will also house a lap pool, changing rooms with saunas, and a second restaurant. If you’d like to work up a sweat, there are several nature trails around the property for light hiking (borrow walking sticks if it’s been raining as the grounds can get muddy). Paths are lush, green and peaceful; you’ll pass by trees with roots so big you have to stop and stare. Yoga classes are held twice daily; a movement class in the morning and a restorative class in the afternoon, both of which incorporate a guided meditation. Sound baths are on offer, too. Where do you stay? I stayed in Papaya, a luxury loft and one of 18 rooms on the property (10 more are scheduled to be completed in 2024). It had, without a doubt, the most stunning views of any hotel room I’ve stayed in. One full wall is a floor-to-ceiling window with a sliding door out to the balcony. You can wake up, open the curtains, and look out onto the mountains; spot boats parked in the Pacific Ocean, and watch birds swoop and butterflies flit by from the comfort of a chair swing from the balcony. The open-walled, seafoam green-tiled shower competes for attention with the standalone bathtub, positioned next to the glass for epic bathtime vistas. Other options include Deluxe and Premium rooms, most of which have their own patios. All come stocked with cotton bathrobes and slippers, organic body care products, and organic hypoallergenic bedding. Notably missing are televisions and phones. You’re here to disconnect, though Wi-Fi is readily available, and the front desk is just a WhatsApp message away. Elsewhere on the property, there is a lounge deck next to the yoga studio, with a firepit staff will light upon request, and plenty of couches and bean bag-like chairs for reading or meditating. You might just see Tarzan, Jane, or their offspring up there, the hotel’s resident peacocks. Other hangout spots include the main pool and hot tub, right next to the dining room; the library, where there is a take-one-leave-one ethos; and the spa’s pool and hot tub. All around the property, you’ll find various swings and hammocks. The rocking sensation only adds to the peacefulness. Accessibility The resort is set on a mountain, with inclines throughout the property, which may be difficult to navigate for those with limited mobility. However, they do adhere to the World Wide Web Consortium’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (2.1 Level AA), as well as state and federal accessibility requirements, which means there is an accessible route to the public entrance, dining area, concierge desk, and accessible rooms, with wheelchair-friendly doorways and balconies, and grab bars in the bathroom. Find more information here. Eco effort With its clear focus on the healing benefits of nature, it only makes sense that the resort would prioritize efforts to respect the environment it sits in. Commitments include providing chemical-free spa treatments made with organic products; using locally sourced fish and meat at the restaurant, with a daily menu that relies on seasonal products; employing 90 percent of the staff from the community, and offering excursions that benefit locals; a recycling program with the municipality; a composting facility on the property; biodegradable products used in the laundry and housekeeping; and energy and water saving programs along with regular monitoring. Glass carafes of fruit- or herb-infused water are always waiting for you in your room. Anything else to mention? It’s easy to stay put, especially once you’re in the rhythm of eating interspersed with treatments or rest. But if you do want to see more of the area, the hotel can arrange trips to Arenal Volcano, La Paz Waterfall Garden, local farmers markets, beaches, and more. Also worth noting: The Retreat is on the side of a mountain, so expect inclines when walking to dinner or yoga. Final word If you’re looking for a place to decompress, get grounded or kick start a new phase of life, there are few places better suited or more beautiful. Healing Holidays (healingholidays.com/condenast; 020 7843 3592) can arrange a 5-night Immersive Wellness program from $2,496 per person sharing, including transfers, full board accommodation, and inclusions of the program." - Madison Flager

Our Favorite Hotel Rooms With a View in 2023

"Arriving at The Retreat well after sundown, I was brimming with excitement when I woke up that first morning—a pre-trip scroll of the property’s Instagram and website let me know I was in for a treat. When I did pull back the curtains, there was an audible gasp inspired by the floor-to-ceiling windows on the entire back wall of the loft, some of which were sliding doors leading out onto a balcony. When it’s clear, you can see the Pacific Ocean; even in the fog, rolling green hills; chirping, fluttering birds; and impossibly bright flowers are in your sightline, whether you’re laying in bed, soaking in the standalone tub, or swaying on the porch swing."

From the moment we arrived, everyone made us feel well taken care of, as though we were a part of the family. The wellness programs and spa services were above anything we’ve experienced. The yoga and fitness instructors were fantastic as was the sound bath healer. As for the food, it was exceptionally fresh, absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. We loved not having to decide what to eat! This retreat has all the little details covered to ensure the most relaxing and rejuvenating stay. It truly is heaven on earth. We are definitely coming back.

This wellness retreat exceeded my expectations. The property is absolutely stunning set high in the mountains with panoramic views, whitewashed arches, flowering trees, and even peacocks wandering the grounds. Every space, from the spa to the yoga deck, feels intentional and peaceful. The food was incredible. Most ingredients are grown right on the property or sourced locally. Every meal was plant-based, anti-inflammatory, and felt like edible art. They even offer cooking classes if you’re interested in learning how to bring some of that healing home with you. The spa was equally dreamy. I booked a 90-minute deep tissue massage that left me feeling both relaxed and reset. Even if you don’t book a treatment, you can still enjoy the spa amenities. One tip: I highly recommend arranging a driver through the resort. The road leading up the mountain is steep and winding beautiful but not easy to navigate if you’re unfamiliar with the terrain. Having a skilled local driver made the arrival feel safe, calm, and completely worth it. Perfect for solo travelers, friend getaways, or anyone looking for a soft, slow, restorative pause.

I had the pleasure of doing The Big M: Mastering Menopause program at The Retreat Costa Rica in May 2025, and it was the most restorative gift I could’ve given myself.||I traveled solo for my birthday and was genuinely celebrated from the moment I arrived. Even though I came alone, I never felt lonely—every staff member seemed to know my name. The atmosphere was peaceful, warm, and deeply personal.||The daily spa treatments had me feeling like a princess. Each wellness program includes multiple treatments, and they’re not just filler—they’re thoughtfully selected and expertly delivered. The Vichy shower was a standout—so relaxing and unique.||The vegetarian, organic meals were absolutely delicious and surprisingly filling (especially for a daily meat-eater like me).||My luxury loft room was a sanctuary, and the entire property was peaceful, clean, and beautifully maintained. From the thoughtful accommodations to the kindness of every staff member, this experience was next-level healing and comfort.||I left feeling celebrated, restored, and incredibly grateful.||P.S. When I arrived with an unexpected sinus allergy, the team escorted me to a local pharmacy to ensure I could communicate and get the right care. Truly above and beyond.

Our stay at The Retreat in Costa Rica was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, we were immersed in a serene environment dedicated to wellness, restoration, and genuine hospitality. The setting is breathtaking, but what truly set this experience apart was the staff—without them, our time here simply would not have been the same. The cuisine was absolutely phenomenal—elevated, chef-inspired, and ever-changing. Each meal felt like a surprise and a celebration of fresh, nourishing ingredients. Dining here was a true highlight, and a perfect complement to the resort’s wellness-centered philosophy. Most of all, we want to recognize the incredible team who made our experience unforgettable. A heartfelt thank you to Kimberly, Carlos, Jazmin, Fabio, and Jonathan—your warmth, attentiveness, and sincerity went far beyond what we could have imagined. You made us feel seen, cared for, and truly welcomed. You are the heart of The Retreat, and your presence elevated every moment of our stay. We left feeling completely renewed, and we can’t wait to return. The Retreat exceeded every expectation—and we look forward to seeing these wonderful individuals again when we do.

I honestly didn’t what to expect, I was looking for a get away with my mom for a couple of months, but this place completely blew us away. From the moment we arrived, it felt like we were being welcomed into someone’s beautiful, peaceful home. The food was something we looked forward to every day — we never knew what the chef was going to come up with, and somehow every single meal was both nourishing and delicious (and totally different!).||What really made our stay unforgettable, though, was the staff. Kimberly, Carlos, Jazmin, Fabio — every single person was warm, kind, and made us feel genuinely cared for. There was this calm energy all around that made it easy to finally slow down and breathe.||We left feeling lighter, rested, and reconnected — something we didn’t even know we needed. This wasn’t just a vacation, it was restoring, relaxing and nourishing in every way.

The retreat started out somewhat Ok. First we were given a tour and then handed over to the kitchen/ bar staff to accommodate us with a drink and snack but we arrived a little late for the lunch that was included in our meal plan package. We ordered a cheese board and a couple cocktails but then were charged for the board as well. The room was excellent with views and bathtub, also the spa was amazing. Now here's where it went downhill, we checked out and had an excursion planned for 2pm and asked if we could have lunch and they offered to give us a salad to go in exchange ( seems like they threw scraps together and called it a salad, got nauseous from it) so we asked to have dinner instead of the lunch we didn't get to have. They took 3 hours to respond back with them saying their boss said its not possible (mind you we added the meal plan package that includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner) so we only got 2 meals out of the "package". If you like the views they offer and the rooms then yes I would say go it's amazing but service was really not as organized as you would expect from a 5-star hotel.

Johnathan was an exceptional server. When my husband informed him that we were celebrating our anniversary, he went above and beyond to prepare a private dinner just for us. He and the other hostess even sang “Happy Birthday” to my wife. Throughout all the meals, he was attentive and present, and at our last dinner, he prepared his favorite cocktail for us, which was absolutely delicious. We eagerly anticipate our return to see him again. |Paris and Terri McClain

My daughter and I stayed at The Retreat Costa Rica in late April 2025, and the experience was absolutely beautiful. The hotel is peaceful, intimate, and tastefully designed — every detail is thoughtful, and from the moment you arrive, you feel genuinely cared for. The food was a major highlight: all organic, gluten-free, dairy-free, and incredibly delicious. Many ingredients come from their own garden, which makes each meal feel even more nourishing. Huge thanks to Chef Sergio, who personally took the time to discuss our food intolerances and ensured every dish was safe, creative, and beautifully prepared. Another special part of the property is their private jungle with several walking trails (around 5 km in total). If you go early in the morning, you might spot monkeys, birds, butterflies — and there’s a beautiful water stream at the end of one of the trails that’s well worth the walk. Peaceful and rejuvenating. There are also yoga classes offered daily, both morning and evening. I attended both sessions and they were absolutely lovely — calm, grounding, and beautifully led in a serene space. The spa is stunning, with breathtaking views. I tried four treatments — most were excellent. One was booked incorrectly (I received a facial massage instead of craniosacral therapy), but the issue was handled quickly and kindly by the staff. We also loved the tea and coffee station, available almost all day, and the bar staff — friendly, talented, and fun — made amazing cocktails (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). We stayed in two rooms: the first, a lower category, was cozy and beautiful. The second was a higher category but was being retired — it felt a bit worn, had no mosquito screen, poor ventilation, and quite a few ants. That said, we were told we were the last guests there before it was closed for renovation, so this is likely already addressed. There was one small issue with a tour — we weren’t given proper guidance beforehand — but again, the hotel was attentive and offered a discount without hesitation. Overall, The Retreat is a place of deep rest, healing, and connection — with exceptional food, kind-hearted staff, nature all around, and a soul-soothing atmosphere. We left feeling renewed and truly grateful. 💛 Highly recommend.
