The Richland (Orange County, California) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Orange, California was originally called Richland, and this boutique hotel borrows both its name and its stylistic inspiration from the town’s past. The Richland occupies a beautifully restored residence in Old Towne, including an original two-story wooden house, a freestanding cottage, a stylish bar and lounge, and a newly built event space, all set amid olive trees. The interiors are California cool with a vintage twist — bespoke wallpaper flecked with citrus fruit patterns, exposed beams, dark wood paneling, craftsman furniture." - Tablet Hotels

This is the second December in a row that we’ve celebrated our company service awards at The Richland, and it has been a fantastic experience both times. The ballroom is gorgeous, but the food really stole the show. As someone who looks for gluten-free options, I was so impressed by the menu; the GF dishes were thoughtful and flavorful rather than an afterthought. It’s clear they prioritize the guest experience. Another huge plus is the convenience—they offer free parking and a charming, cable car-style shuttle that makes getting to the venue easy and fun for our team. If you’re looking for a sophisticated spot in Downtown Orange with high-end catering and great logistics, this is it!

We stayed at The Richland while visiting our daughter in August. I was determined that we were not staying in a large hotel with families who were visiting Disneyland! Our daughter is 22 so we’re well past that stage. And I don’t like renting houses - I refuse to utilize any of my culinary skills while on vacation (is it really a vacation if I have to make breakfast????). Prior to booking, I was graciously warned by the hotel staff that it would be warm in August….LOL….people in Southern California haven’t experienced a heat wave like New England summer temps of 90 degrees with 98% humidity! Since we live on the East Coast (Rhode Island) we found Old Towne charming and the architecture reminiscent of home. There are wonderful restaurants within walking distance. We absolutely loved the hotel! We rented the Attic Suite which was beautifully decorated. While I found the attic to be warm upon arrival (it’s an attic), I was able to adjust the thermostat and the room got quite cool. The hotel is well maintained and there are a lot of special touches that elevate your stay. I was so happy that we chose to stay at The Richland and look forward to visiting Old Towne again!||PS….Be sure to get breakfast at the Filling Station! We ate there multiple mornings - it was fantastic!

You don't want to stay here! Most people are unaware that this used to be a mortuary. So bizarre to see people having their weddings in the room where we had my father's wake. Makes me wonder if they made bedrooms out of the rooms where they were previously preparing or storing bodies(ugh) or if anyone has had any spiritual/ paranormal experiences.

From the moment we walked into The Richland we knew it was the place we wanted to get married. The atmosphere was so homey, yet so professional and put together! The staff (Sarah, Bree, and Anna) were incredible throughout all of planning. On the day of the wedding, it was so comforting to know that everything we needed -- and so many of our loved ones -- were right there on property. Cady (?) who was working Security the night of our wedding was so thoughtful and kind, going above and beyond to make sure we as a couple were taken care of. Really everyone at The Richland puts in that same level of care. The hotel rooms were the perfect, quiet retreat the night before and the night of our event. Thank you Richland!

The Richland is a pleasant building, but in a very noisy location. We booked an "upgraded king", not knowing that this room opens directly on Maple Avenue and is also right on the corner of Maple and Orange. Across the street is a Culinary Dropout restaurant that had late night and very early morning truck deliveries (with trucks left running for what seemed like an eternity). During the day, the restaurant was being powerwashed up until about 6 p.m. The main hotel is set back off the street, and has to be better quieter (except, as other reviews note, during weddings, which this hotel really seems to cater to). Culinary Dropout is not yet open, but like its San Diego twin, is supposed to feature life music, sports bar, etc., so good luck with that if you decide to stay here. On a positive note, we appreciated that there is no wall to wall carpet in this room, and that you can open a window for some fresh air (and noise...).

We LOVED our stay at The Richland. We booked out the venue for 2 nights for our wedding and it was the best decision ever. Rooms are beautiful, clean, and practical. Service is amazing, responsive, kind, and cleaned up our mess of a get ready room post wedding. A true blessing and gift to us when we woke up that morning! Highly recommend staying here especially because the surrounding Old Towne Orange is so cute.

This was my third time staying at The Richland. I've stayed in a room on the bottom floor, the second floor and this time we were in The Attic. We enjoyed the location very much, the office was for the most part very responsive but our issue this time was The Attic was so warm/hot. We had fans brought up and that did help. But for the price, when we walked up the stairs to the literal 'heat wave' it was disappointing. We will stay at The Richland again, but not in The Attic unless it's winter. Do check out the eating/drinking spot "Provisions" - and be aware that the bar/lounge area is not open in The Richland. A nice self serve breakfast is available on Friday & Saturday morning, but otherwise it's self serve snacks and some drinks. Some of the write-ups and marketing make it sound like bar is still open - it's not.

Yelp
This was the PERFECT wedding venue. The staff was amazing, catering was awesome and had so many guests compliment the food. We absolutely loved the venue and the surrounding area was also super nice. The venue itself was already so beautiful making it easy on us when it came to planning. We also loved the bridal suite, it was a stunning area to get ready and offered the bridal party a breather when we were trying to hide from guests.

Yelp
This venue is the perfect balance of cozy and elegant. I've coordinated a wedding here before and the staff is extremely helpful, but yesterday I had a wonderful chance to sit down and dine here, and the food was just terrific. 10/10, would recommend this venue over and over again for any event.

Yelp
Did a wedding here and had the absolute best time! The venue is so unique in its decor and has so much charm. They offer a shuttle/bus to take guests from the parking to the venue for easy access and travel. Staff was helpful, efficient, and kind as well. Can't wait to come back here later this year!

Yelp
We rented a room for the day as a staging area for a nearby photoshoot, and the staff couldn't have been more welcoming. They even let us capture a few shots around their gorgeous property, which turned out beautifully. The surrounding neighborhood is equally charming, and I can't wait to come back as a guest and explore more next time.

Yelp
Lovely hotel with excellent service. We loved the prime location, walkable to everything! Many restaurants within a block or two.

Yelp
I was a part of a wedding at this venue in the heart of Orange. While the wedding was beautiful and the staff did a great job setting up, the overall experience was marred by unfriendly service. The bartender seemed annoyed when asked for water, a waiter treated us like criminals for requesting an extra bread roll (which we were denied), and the servers refused to give us an additional plate of food sent by the bride and groom and again, treated us like criminals for even asking. Even when I approached the outdoor bar for water, I was curtly told to find the water station inside. These encounters with unfriendly staff were disappointing, although a few team members were nice, the majority were not. It's clear that management aims to provide exceptional service, as this venue is part of The 24 Carrots Collective, but it falls short due to what seemed like grumpy staff members. The start of the service was good as management was really communicative on room reservations and also extremely accommodating. The venue staff was also really well-organized for hosting a larger beautiful wedding. The bridal suite was a bit cramped for six bridesmaids and their makeup artists, so if you're considering this venue, keep that in mind. The space for dinner service felt tight with 160 guests in a good way as this created a cozy and lively atmosphere, especially for the dance floor once the lights dimmed. The food was also a highlight, especially since the couple opted to upgrade to Seabass, which was delicious. Overall, the venue offers a charming setting for a fun wedding, but the service could use improvement or certain staff members could use more training. Additionally, parking is a challenge if you're not staying overnight in one of the boutique hotel's twelve rooms. For weddings, they do offer a trolley service from a nearby parking area, which is a helpful option. I didn't end up staying overnight after learning that the hotel used to be a mortuary, which made me feel uneasy. However, the guests who did stay seemed to really enjoy their experience. The hotel is conveniently located, surrounded by plenty of eateries, which is a big plus. In summary, while the venue offers a charming setting and the wedding itself was wonderful, the experience was ruined by inconsistent service. If you're considering this venue, be prepared for both the charm and quirks that come with it. With a few improvements, this place could truly shine to its 24 Carrots potential!

Yelp
We held our 50 year high school reunion at The Richland. Everyone really loved the venue, best ever!

Yelp
My dream was to have a wedding where everyone felt the comfort of being home and The Richland did not disappoint! The Richland is a beautiful wedding venue/small hotel. Their venue space is a great blank space that is beautiful as is or minimal enough to get as creative as you want. Outside there are two cozy outdoor spaces for guests to mingle before your event and during cocktail hour. The bridal getting ready suite is included in venue rental. They have outlets everywhere in the suite and is a good size for a group of 6 people to get ready in. The venue is managed by 24 Carrots catering. This company pleasantly surprised me with how accommodating they were to tailor the menu to the culture of me and my husband. If there was something they could not accommodate, there was no problem finding other vendors in addition to their services. Their food is delicious. The variety of their menu options is huge. And they are very transparent about working with allergies/other food restrictions of guests. Their ability to estimate how much food to prepare for the party size is perfect. It's been a week since my wedding and I continue to have guests telling me how much they loved the food. PS the bathrooms are gorgeous!!!!!

Yelp
The Cottage @ The Richland was so impressive. We had everything we needed and beds/pillows were comfortable. My daughter had her wedding here on 6/06/25. The staff was very attentive and made everything so easy for us. We would definitely stay here again and recommend having event here.

Yelp
Wife and I came out for a date night. We really loved the living room vibe of the bar and how friendly the bartenders are. We both enjoy old fashioneds so we tried the different variations they had and they did not disappoint. Some negative comments were the price of a drink, granted you don't get much but their well is Old Forrester so you do get top quality spirits. We tried the chips with their dips and they were solid. I had the ceviche and really enjoyed that. The wife ordered the katsu sandwich but we wished it was crispier. Flavor was there though. What needs its own section are the fries. These were probably the best French fries I have ever had. I didn't care for the dip and wanted either just ranch or ketchup, but holy damn I would come back just for the fries. Overall really cute spot and will come back again for date night.

Yelp
From the beginning of the planning process, the staff at The Richland was dedicated to ensuring all of our questions were answered. Everyone was kind, diligent and made sure we had the most beautiful and special day. The Richland provided a modern yet elegant space with flexible options to create our dream wedding. With both indoor and outdoor private spaces, it offered the best of both worlds and was filled with natural light. Overall, we had an amazing experience at The Richland and highly recommend it to any couple looking for a wedding venue.

Yelp
The Richland is a beautiful property in the heart of Downtown Orange. Close to all the fun shops and restaurants. Although we did not stay for an event, it seems that the Richland would be the perfect location and venue for a wedding or party. Every detail of our room was on point and it was so comfortable and charming.

Yelp
Love this little gem of a bar at the Orange Circle! It's great to pop in and grab a cocktail before or after dinner, but they also take reservations if you want to be sure to have a table. We love sitting at the bar where it's easier to socialize and watch the creation of the drinks. Everything I have tried has been great. I would love to give this place 5 stars, but their service is lacking. The men that work here are cocky, rude, and dry. This place could be so much more with a shift in expectations from management to have friendly service.
google avatar

Yelp
Really Enjoyed this place for happy hour. This new-ish hotel blends into Old Town Orange. The bar area feels like a cozy living room. The bartenders are very friendly and will make you a custom drink. The food we tried wasn't great. Homemade potato wedges with dips didn't taste fresh. The dips were fine. The chicken sandwich was decent but nothing crazy.

Yelp
When a lodging guest checks in, they initial an itemized code of conduct. Included in that is a quiet time from 10 pm to a reasonable time in the morning. This quiet time does not, apparently, apply to staff or event attendees. A loud conversation between employees just after midnight Saturday morning occurred just outside my window and lasted until 1:30 a.m. That evening's reception had an excellent band that played until 11:15. Reception attendees kept up the cacophony until well after midnight. If the jam is to be lively at all hours, commit to it and drop the pretense of quiet consideration of lodgers.

Yelp
We coordinated a wedding here recently. Bree/Sarah and her team were so easy to work with and very communicative. When we step foot on the property we were in great hands - the setup team, folks in the office, and staff throughout the entire night took good care of us and felt supported to ensure our couple had an amazing wedding experience. They even gave my partner and I snack bags during the setup, which was very kind and thoughtful because as a vendor, we typically take care of everyone else. I wish every venue was this kind and helpful! Thank you again Richland for the hospitality!

Yelp
We booked our wedding here after having a very poor experience with our previously booked venue. It was honestly the best decision we could have made! It's an all in one ceremony and reception space. The staff was super responsive to any request, and the overall experience was simply amazing. The venue itself is impeccable, stylish, and gorgeous! So many accommodations and just an overall beautiful venue. Highly recommend this venue!

Rachel S.

Yelp
We had our wedding here a few weeks ago and it was AMAZING. The team at the Richland was absolutely amazing. The catering team & bar tenders were all so kind- our guests commented on how smoothly things went and how kind everyone working at the wedding was. I had hoped that our wedding would be fun and as stress free as possible (it was!) but what exceeded my expectations was how it seemed like every single person at The Richland went above and beyond to make it a great experience for everyone. Special thanks to Bree for helping us in the final push with details and excellent communication with us and the other vendors. We couldn't have picked a better venue with a better team if we tried!

Yelp
I rented the facility in early March this year for a pre wedding dinner reception, while the 24 carrots catering staff was very responsive to servicing issues during the events, the sale / hotel event manager and her assistant were terrible during the whole process, failing to follow-up with meeting/email timeline and coordination. specific details as agreed in contract some how were not aware /acknowledged by the catering staff. Misunderstanding as having "a" parking spot for the couple was treated as committing a criminal act, we would be happy to move, no need for the hotel staff to use "the tone" right before the event. We paid decent $$ for the whole thing and expected a better overall services. I will not using 24 carrots again.

Yelp
Honestly, I am a little torn between a 4 or 5 so I think that is a great sign that the hotel is lovely. Things to consider: 1. It's in Old Towne Orange so you are basically only a short walk away from food and shopping. 2. It's a close Uber drive to most venues for shows in the area. 3. The hotel is beautiful and has a lot of history. 4. The service was amazing and they have security on site overnight. 5. The downside for the room we stayed in was how much we could hear other guests. I am a very light sleeper so I heard the attic room until nearly 5am talking all night long. As the hotel was once a home this makes sense, but I think sound machines in the room might be a nice touch or maybe having a quiet hour in place. All in all my husband didn't seem bothered by the noise and eventually I did get a few hours of sleep. The hotel is adorable and I would encourage people to experience a stay.

Yelp
Such a perfect location for Chapman parents to visiting their students. Parking , walking distance to campus and all the great restaurants in the circle. We'll be back for sure.

Yelp
The best place to stay in Old Town Orange is The Richland. We no longer stay in hotels; we choose to stay at The Richland because it is conveniently located and close to everything. Great service, gorgeously decorated rooms, great service. You must try this place.

Yelp
Wonderful quaint, trendy and conveniently located boutique hotel for Chapman peeps. Super personable team who went above and beyond to meet our needs. Highly recommend

Yelp
Delicious flatbread pizza! Incredible craft cocktails. Staff is super friendly, ambience is cool. They have seating around a circular bar and living room style seating with chairs, booths & coffee tables. Love the vibe! It gets busy, so put in your name and maybe plan to walk the Circle and walk back.

Yelp
Our stay at The Richland was beyond amazing and blew away any expectations we had. The staff was SO accommodating and friendly and we can't say enough how welcomed we felt. They thought of every little detail in the design of the room, and it was so comfortable and cute. The bar/restaurant was just as fantastic and we has a wonderful dinner both nights we were there - paired with excellent cocktails. Don't miss out on this wonderful addition to the area, the team behind The Richland has done a great job and their staff continues to keep up with the great service. We loved our stay and hope to be back soon!

Lucy R.

Yelp
Really great vibes. You would have never guessed that it used to be a mortuary! It's a great location. It def fits more of the college vibe now vs memorial services. Great job revamping!

Maureen C.

Yelp
I attended a super party at this venue last week and decided to spend the night. Every element of my stay was fantastic. The room was incredibly chic and the service was unbelievable. The person who checked me in walked me to my room, even. When does that ever happen? High quality finishes and linens/towels w such a sophisticated modern/craftsman esthetic. They offer a free mocktail in the fridge which is a welcoming touch. This property sure beats staying in a soulless hotel in Anaheim. I hope I'll have a chance to return.
google avatar

Sheryl M.

Yelp
Wonderful food and the drinks are amazing. The bartenders are the best mixologists. She even made a Ramis Fizz that was the best I've had. Small, so makes for a great atmosphere. This place will be somewhere we will certainly frequent.

Monica W.

Yelp
I was in a wedding here and it was so ideal to stay on the property. The rooms are large and spacious. The aesthetic details of the room and bathroom felt cozy and clean. The front desk was accommodating in letting us into our room early. There was security at night patrolling the area. The venue is beautiful and so close to a ton of restaurants and shops. Highly recommend staying if you are in a wedding at the Richland or even if you are visiting Old Towne Orange.

Yelp
Loved the chill vibe and hip-yet-locals atmosphere. Unique cocktails that truly were tasty. Would return and bring even more friends. Also the appetizers we got were equally tasty and the fuller dishes looked fantastic.
google avatar

Izzy F.

Yelp
Super cute vibe for a cocktail. However, drinks are overpriced. They offer one cab by the glass which is as much as buying a bottle. I was surprised at the lack of variety. Especially because there were multiple options for other wines. Probably wouldn't go back for drinks. But super cute decor.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
I only came for drinks, but bartender was excellent and the cocktails were well crafted. Loved the vibe and would love to see this place host a spooky Halloween party or murder mystery party.

Sherine S.

Yelp
Super adorable location. In the heart of Orange circle but quiet and romantic. Spend one night in the Attic suite and was not disappointed. Would definitely recommend. The staff was amazing!

Yelp
Great atmosphere ! My wife and our niece had a few drinks and appetizers here and great ambience , music , servers and patrons ! We will definitely go here again!!!

Bernadette R.

Yelp
We stayed in the cottage and it was wonderful, large open kitchen and living area. The bedrooms are also a very good size and beautiful bathrooms. The decorating is outstanding and the employees both in the office and restaurant could not have been nicer. The food and cocktails at the restaurant were excellent also providing outdoor dining. We loved it!

Yelp
Very cute and quaint with impeccable staff! I stayed at their lovely cottage for pre and post wedding fun/sleepover with my bridesmaids and night of with my new husband! The attention to detail is amazing and comfort is off the charts! thank you!!

Mike A.

Yelp
My wife and I recently stayed at the hotel. Rooms are freshly remodeled clean and nicely done. Great location walking distance to the local restaurants and bars. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Great craft cocktail bar in the lounge. We will definitely return see you soon!

Michael F.

Yelp
From the moment we arrived until we checked out, we were always greeted with a smile and a willingness to help if needed. The ladies at the front desk were awesome and suggested some great places to eat during our stay. The location is great centrally located by the "Orange Circle" giving us lot's of choices on things to do. We would 100% stay there again if the opportunity presented itself.

Shadeh S.

Yelp
Stayed here with my family for a night and it was a wonderful experience! They let us stay a few hours past checkout while we went to tour Chapman University. Would highly recommend this place! Extremely clean, cozy, and homey. We definitely will be back!

Jennifer A.

Yelp
Amazing! Rooms were clean, cozy and inviting. Bar/lounge offers great cocktails, music and food. Will definitely stay again!

Yelp
Enjoyed our stay! Well done renovation of historic home and property, well located just off the Historic Olde Town of Orange, friendly and helpful staff! This was a great stopover visit to L.A. area.

John K.

Yelp
All the staff are incredibly helpful and kind. The whole place is recently renovated and beautiful. Right in town and a block from Chapman.
