The Most Remote Restaurants in the World

"Once the site of a fisherman’s post, The Rock restaurant sits perched atop a rock off the eastern coast of Unguja Island in the Zanzibar archipelago. The establishment is on what’s known as a “tidal island”—it rises above the sand on Michamvi Pingwe beach at low tide, but becomes an island at high tide. Depending on the time of day, voyagers arrive on foot or by boat. After climbing a wooden staircase to reach the entrance, diners enjoy unobstructed views of the Indian Ocean from one of 12 cozy tables beneath a Makuti palm tree roof. Patrons sip cocktails out on the back patio, which—at certain hours—is surrounded by turquoise water on three sides. The restaurant serves both lunch and dinner, so parties can time their meal reservations to match the desired tide level. The menu, which is largely European-inspired, highlights local seafood and house-made pasta. The Rock’s chefs offer guests a selection of globally-recognizable options, but they also aim to impart the flavors of Zanzibar and the surrounding region in every dish. The fish carpaccio is served with coconut, lime, and chili pepper. Most desserts (which range from chocolate salami to pineapple flambé) come topped with “Zanzibar spices” ice cream. Their beef, spices, and vegetables are all farmed nearby.  While dining at The Rock is exponentially more expensive than dining elsewhere in Zanzibar, the restaurant, which opened in 2010, sponsors the Kichanga Foundation. Established in 2005, this organization teaches community members how to swim and focuses on a number of sustainability programs, including waste sorting and recycling." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

From the very first moment, everything was just perfect. The beautiful entrance with the canopy set the tone, followed by a warm welcome from the manager who promptly verified our reservation. We were then taken to our requested table with a lovely view — exactly what we hoped for. The service throughout the evening was excellent. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, the food was delicious and full of flavor, and the overall ambiance made the whole experience even more enjoyable. After 8 PM, the music added a fantastic touch — vibrant, yet not overwhelming. To top it off, we picked up some souvenirs on our way out at very reasonable prices, which was a lovely bonus. This is definitely a place we highly recommend. While the prices might be a bit on the higher side, for us it was worth every dollar we spent. A truly memorable experience from start to finish.

Are at The Rock for lunch. Overall I was disappointed with the food quality. I had tempura seafood and lobster. The first was tasteless other than greasy batter and the lobster whilst a bit better, not great and also accompanied by greasy fried vegetables. I left a lot which I don’t like to do and is rare. That said, the mocktail I had was tasty and the coffee was good. The service was friendly and attentive. And they also removed the starter cost from the bill, without me asking. Other people were eating their meals, so maybe just not my taste or I was unlucky. For the price range I would expect excellent food on every dish. Views are lovely. There is a small bar/sitting area at the sea facing side, so I think you could go for just a drink.

I had an amazing dining experience at The Rock Restaurant! Firstly, the atmosphere is absolutely breathtaking—the unique location on a rock in the ocean makes it unforgettable. The food exceeded all my expectations; I ordered the Bolognese and wine, both of which were delicious. The service was also excellent, adding to the overall wonderful experience. If you’re visiting Zanzibar, I highly recommend dining at The Rock. It’s a must-visit for the stunning views, incredible food, and one-of-a-kind setting!

Wow, spectacular vibes in this place. The view is well worth it. The food is really good. The service is exceptional. We were served by Gilbert and he was top class 👍🏽

Overpriced, inedible food. Pay attention to the negative reviews. If you really want to see if, come, have a drink and leave. And make sure it's high tide or it's not particularly attractive. I ordered the crab ravioli which was OK, but small. They try to push the lobster (it's actually crayfish) but was alternatively recommended the chicken skewers and potatoes Daphne. The chicken was dry and the potato's inedible. I'm certain they had been reheated at least 3 times, you can see yourself from the photos. $30usd for 5 small skewers of chicken and inedible potatoes. Given the speed at which dishes arrive, nothing is cooked fresh. The only thing good was the cocktail. $80usd for a small pasta, inedible main and a cocktail.

We were very happy with our visit to The Rock – it’s a truly unique experience and absolutely worth checking out! The setting is one of a kind, especially in the afternoon as the tide comes in – stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. You need to reserve a table in advance, and there’s a €20 per person deposit, but this is deducted from your final bill, which is fair. The prices are on the higher side overall, but the location and service help justify it. The real highlight? The desserts! We’ve honestly never had sweets this good – we would come back just for that. All in all, a special place that’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in Zanzibar.

Great place and very special. It’s quite pricey but as mentioned a very special place to go to and worth the visit. The food is great but there are definitely some other places around the island where the food is even better. I would recommend to book in advance.

2 weeks ago I went to Zanzibar for yoga retreat with a group of girls from Dubai and for the farewell dinner we went to a rock restaurant and it was amazing, really the highlight of our trip, such a lovely location, white sand, pink sunset, surrounded by cute boats. This place is a fine dining, great wine and great food, I had grilled lobster and the meat was so soft and was melting on the mouth, i recommend to reserve a table outside to enjoy the view, staff was very friendly and attentive and we were big group of people and everyone left with the best memories, nice music too. And I would say good prices for the high quality of the products. Definitely place to go if you travel to Zanzibar!
