13 Best Things to Do in Melbourne

"Every Saturday and Sunday, a gaggle of local jewelers, crafters, artists, and designers convene in the Fitzroy neighborhood to peddle their wares. The indie vibe reaches peak hipster at the market’s rooftop bar and diner that caters to both creatives and shoppers alike, making for the perfect ending to a day wandering the area. The handmade jewelry game is really on point here, with colorful and whimsical clay jewelry from folks like Polly Collective and B Hunny Designs. And considering the AUD/USD conversion rates, you're getting a great deal on statement pieces that'll be the center of attention with basics." - Krista Simmons

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What a gem in the heart of Fitzroy! The Rose Street Artists’ Market is the perfect spot to spend a relaxed weekend morning. It’s a compact yet lively space filled with stunning artwork, creative homewares, handmade jewellery, and quirky gifts from talented local artists. The layout is easy to walk around, and the vibe is friendly and inspiring. I especially loved how approachable the artists were — you can talk to them about their process and story. Whether you’re looking for something special or just want to soak up Melbourne’s local creative scene, this market is a must-visit! 🌿🎨✨ #Genastar

Rose street artists' market is a flea market and opens over the weekends. It is quite a walk from the nearest tram ride (along the same street to go to the fitzroy market). You will arrive to an artistic place with graffiti on the walls. It is generally smaller than fitzroy market but it is nice to have a look around. Nice flea market in the suburbs of Melbourne.

Rose Street Artist Market is the jewel in Fitzroy's hotspot of creativity. The market is crammed with handmade objects from a wide range of quality local artisans. This curated range of ceramics, paintings, jewellery, and sewn objects is the perfect place to buy a gift or souvenir of Melbourne. Stallholders change over time, so there's always a reason to return. Street car parking very hard to find on weekends and is at a premium....take a tram instead.

It's well worth a walk down Rose St in Fitzroy to enjoy this and other markets near by. There is a lot of artistic variety in this market along with artisan offerings including perfumes and teas which were great.

Google
Vibrant, edgy cute little market with handmade things from crochet earrings - I bought for myself - matching my new Zimmerman blouse to Tonics made with Australian native plants like lemon myrtle- I got 8 bottles and will import them to Germany- great present for my Gin and Tonic loving husband and friends. Can’t believe I never came here while living 3 years in Brighton. Will certainly come back.

Love this market! Been wanting to come here for ages but they only open on Saturdays. There’s lots of gorgeous handmade gifts you could get, and this would be a great place to buy your friends gifts!

Google
A wide variety of stalls here, both inside and outside. We spent a good amount of time browsing. Really lovely to chat with some of the artists and craftspeople too, their passion for their products is infectious.

Yelp
Okay, I'll admit it. I'm a smidgen biased to Rose St as I sometimes have a stall here, I know the owners and I've made many a friends here. The great thing about this particular market is the amazing variety of young. local designers. There's no cheap knock-offs or broken junk. It's all lovely hand crafted products. There is an amazing array of people occupy these stalls, old silversmiths and twenty-something fabric designers. There are products for every budget and I believe this is a must visit for any tourist trip to Melbourne!

Yelp
A really cool little market full of local artists and designers. it is nice to buy products from the person who designed and made it, you get so much more information and it is nice to support local people not big business. Most stores accept cards so you don't have to carry cash. My girlfriend purchased some Kinetic Jewellery that looked great and was fun aswell, someone really put some thought into it. We then purchased a cool soy candle in a scientific looking jar. there was so many items we both liked, we will be back here for sure!!

Yelp
Anyone who has strolled down Brunswick St on the weekend (I'm looking at ALL of you) has probably run in to the 'Tin Man', a slightly frightening-looking but very friendly man handing out flyers to the Rose St Artist Markets. But have you actually been? This is where the creative elite of Fitzroy and beyond huddle together to sell their work - but it isn't all just paintings and photographs! At these markets you can buy quirky plants, a new journal, furniture-with-a-difference, some very different jewellery or just chill out and sip a coffee at the café. This is the perfect place to head if you have to buy a present for the person that has everything!

Yelp
A Fitzroy institution for a reason. Local artists and sellers galore. Particularly good if you need a few prints for your empty walls. Keep an eye out for Susie at Drunk On Water and Erin at EKC Prints!

Yelp
This market was perfect for someone who was looking for original and unique art. When I travel, I always try to pick up a piece of art or jewelry as a souvenir to remind me of my great adventures. Skip the Queen Victoria market and beeline for this gem. The venue itself isn't huge and there aren't hundreds of artist stalls. However, the quality definitely makes up for the quantity in this case. I took several hours touring around again and again because there were so many spectacular pieces that it was hard to choose what to take home. The prices on most goods were fair, it wasn't necessarily cheap but the pieces were beautiful. There is a large variety of different art to choose from. There were quality handmade leather goods, paintings, jewelry, amazing wood working, ceramic pieces and more. The vibe on a Saturday morning was perfect. I ended up buying a small print that I absolutely love! If you're looking for something to do on a weekend check this market out and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Living in Carlton it takes me a couple of back streets to get to Brunswick and Smith. I was making my way down Rose Street and came across this lovely little market. Local designers all set up showcasing their art and passions. You will find Clothes, Jewellery, Photography, Household items and other funky products all up for sale. Because everything is from local designers you'll be paying a tad more than you would expect than in a typical local market place. The items are not in my price range but i'm always happy to come and take a stroll (It's become a bit of a tradition now). The Market is a-buzz with people and artists, spend enough time here and you will eventually see the coffee place to the far back left of the venue. Grab a coffee and dedicate 30 minutes or so just rummaging through the items up for offer. It's easy to just walk through and walk out in 10 minutes, but spend some time really looking at the pieces, they are beautiful and the artists are always friendly and chatty.

Yelp
This is a small but jam-packed-full-of-goodness market with all sorts of locally made goods: cards, art, clothing, tea, wallets, bags, planets, and especially jewelry - everything from dainty little necklaces to massive skull rings. Usually these sorts of places are more along the lines of flea markets or junky DIY projects, but not here - these are quality products made with care. An excellent place to buy one-of-a-kind gifts (or something for yourself) and you'll have no doubt that it was locally made! Only open on weekends - lots of great coffee in the area so this is an excellent stop on your way to/from brekkie!

Yelp
The rose st artists market is a gem, a small market of artisan vendors who sell their wares. Located just off the bustling Brunswick st in the heart of residential fitzroy springs an amazing little hub. The stall holders are friendly and there is a myriad of goods from terrariums to soap, paintings to photographs, clothing and jewellery this is an excellent spot to find a gift. I really like the uniqueness of the wares and the warm and friendly vibe. No cash ... No worries the adjoins cafe helps out vendors so that customers can pay with card. They make a good brew and have tasty treats too.

Yelp
Came to visit and it was closed! What?!? They advertised being open on Saturday 11-5. It is unfortunate that visitors are not able to see and possibly purchase local art. Such a shame.

Yelp
Came on Sunday afternoon after a Carlton-residing friend was wearing a very cute necklace that she got from the The Rose St. Artists' Market. So lucky that the timing worked out well enough for us to be able to visit. Fell in love with this market showcasing great Melbourne art and design talent! Bought a beautiful pastel-painted wooden bead necklace from Cirkus Charm. Handmade- so loved it even more and they have an Etsy store which is wonderful. Lots of cool jewellery pieces at this stall. Had a bit of trouble picking which necklace I wanted cause they had all sorts of colour combinations as well as different shaped beads! Fell in love with a beautiful A4 print by Marianna Marx- who is a talented Artist/ illustrator- with her own website. Had to buy it. Can't wait to frame it up and put it on my wall to show off to everyone. Really great because you can pay for purchases with EFTPOS by going to the next door Young Blood Diner with the name of the stall and cost (written by the stall owner). Return with a EFTPOS receipt for the stall owner and done! Great if you don't have cash or have run out- so you don't have to miss out on the gems you find at the market. Wish I lived in Melbourne- as I saw so much I wanted- but couldn't fit in my luggage back to go back home with. Amazing collection of art (great handmade cards and teatowels/pillow cases etc), photography, fashion, jewellery (coolest succulent necklaces!), accessories, homewares (amazing pottery pieces, furniture and terraniums) and vintage pieces. Definitely must check out this creative hub! So glad I got to

Yelp
My fellow reviewer has pointed out the Tin Man, who has made me jump numerous times with his enthusiastic "hello" and suggestions that I visit the market. I didn't, for years, primarily because I was never around when it was open. Now that the market is open far more regularly, I can find the time to wander in and around the stalls selling very creative work by local artists. At last visit, there were vinyl record journals, jewellery made out of cutlery, Scrabble piece cufflinks, a strange but wonderful looking rocking chair, a stall selling aprons, and many many other things. I was looking for a present for my little sister and didn't see anything that she in particular would like (but she's a girl of quite specific tastes). It's my birthday coming up soon too, though, so sister dear, if you're reading this, maybe go shopping for me here?

Yelp
An ever-changing exhibition of local artists sharing with the world their passion and creativity. You can find here some amazing unique items that make the perfect gift for any occasion. My favourite thing that I have found here were these really cool resin pieces that made a great gift. I brought a necklace that had a silver chain with a cool stamp encased in resin. If you want a nice day out or looking for a unique gift, get your but down here and support the local community.

Yelp
The Rose Street Artists' Market is a great way to spend a couple of hour on the weekend, checking out great arty things and chatting with makers. There's always something fun and interesting to buy - last time I went there was a girl knitting "sushi" headscarves that were essentially a mini scarf to tie around your head, but when rolled up it looked like a sushi roll! Very creative. t's uniquely Melbourne and should certainly be on your list of local markets to check out if you're here from out of town and want some gifts to take home. The little cafe is good too - a BLT and a fruit juice will really hit the spot and give you more energy for shopping!

Yelp
When the weather isn't crap, this is the greatest little artists market around. Queen Vic is okay for crap to buy when you have tourist visitors from abroad. Or maybe for some food to cook at your next bbq. For real gifts and stuff for yourself even, Rose Street has the coolest local artists. Handmade jewelry, clothing, décor, stationery...all kinds of neat little things that you won't find in the big stores. I personally love some of the jewelry artists here. Some of them sell in cool boutiques, but this is your chance to meet the artist behind the collection. Some can even do custom work, or find a really personalized piece of jewelry for a gift. There's even a little café that reminds me of an ice cream truck that no longer drives. Perfect for a latte or a light snack to enjoy the shopping day.

Yelp
The Rose Street Artist Market is a diminutive little weekend market based on initiatives such as the Brooklyn based DUMBO Collective and the artists markets of London and Berlin and located in an erstwhile junkyard in the backstreets of Melbourne's Fitzroy. Taking place every Saturday and Sunday from 11am - 5pm, the market houses up to 70 stalls where artists and designers can sell their wares alongside live music and a decidedly gourmet café selling not only coffee and tea but some pretty exceptional food. I went along expecting something on the scale of London's artists markets and was a little disappointed; Rose Street Artist Market is definitely bijoux. But what it lacks in size it more than makes up for with its own brand of Melbournian charm. Selling everything from clothes to jewellery, art to furniture and much more in between, this charming little artists market is definitely worth a look if you're in Fitzroy at the weekend and fancy whiling away the afternoon over a coffee and a browse somewhere quaint.

Yelp
Well first you'll run into a fitzroy martyr out on brunswick street who will direct you to the markets. There is something for everyone here and if you can find anything well theres ice cream and coffee. The pricing of most of the market stalls were pretty standard and the atmosphere is great. If you are in the area on a Saturday pop in for a look.

Yelp
Great little market with great quality products. Products range from handmade clothes, jewelry, leather, ceramics and art. Totally worth coming if you are looking for something unique

Yelp
When I first moved to Melbourne three years ago, I lived right by the Rose Street Artists Market and I went almost every weekend because I loved it so much. Now, three years later, I do believe I have been to every Melbourne market, and Rose Street is still the best. There are great staple stalls, like the succulents that come in all shapes and sizes (and some even in little necklaces), and the dude who makes the clocks out of old books and tins (I love him!). As well, there are always changing stalls, from which I've scored a handmade book necklace and a saxoflute (an instrument made out of bamboo that is played like a recorder but sounds like a saxophone. for realz). The cafe is good, and if you have time for a haircut check out the guerilla hairdresser in the back corner (the dude there gave me a Miley three years ago. yep, I invented that shit).

Yelp
This was a lot smaller than I thought and it was pretty quite when we were there. The artists works are beautiful and glorious though and they deserve more buyers than we saw.

Yelp
I've walked past this market so many times over the years and for whatever reason have never quite made it through the gates. Last week, I finally ventured in with a friend, and have to say, I definitely haven't been missing out on anything. I can't for the life of me work out how the hairy middled-aged punk-rocker (decked out in leather and studs and covered in tattoos), who hands out brochures for the market on Smith street each week, fits in at all. This market is so pedestrian! Having seen that guy so many times, I just assumed that this market was the type of place where you would find hand calved genital jewellery, or where you could at least have your aura read. But alas...it's just bonsais and decorative ashtrays. Apart from two or three mildly interesting stalls, this place is pretty much a suburban craft market that sells tacky hippy jewellery and some very questionable art. It's the type of place middle-aged women would find a 'hoot'. Which is fine! My mum would love it! But there's nothing new or interesting going on here.
