The Best Hotels in Crete

"If you yearn for somewhere that looks and feels akin to a traditional Cretan village, The Royal Blue with its separate stone buildings, perched along the island’s coastline, might just be the perfect hotel choice. Once you’re checked in, there really is no need to leave the property, as on-site restaurants serve authentic Greek cuisine and there are 38 pools in total (albeit some private and others shared between a small clutch of rooms to lend a feeling of exclusivity). The main swimming event is a heated expanse overlooking the sea—ideal for those visiting in shoulder season when temperatures are balmy but there’s a chill to the water in the mornings. Here, sunloungers and daybeds act like an open invite to settle in for the day; some are even suspended in the water, making a quick toe-dip an effortless way to cool off. The closest restaurant, Alarti, is mere steps away, but if you really don’t want to move, its service extends to these idyllic poolside spots. Beach people will be happy, too. There’s a sheltered manmade bay at the foot of the hotel with easy swimming conditions that instill a sense of confidence in parents of younger guests. This tribe is catered for elsewhere, too. At the spa, there’s a kids’ menu, and suites are kitted out with expansive bathrooms and tubs. The family suite is our recommendation of choice; little ones can nap on the fold-out sofa in the lounge room while parents can sunbathe in reaching distance by the pool. Even in the grown-up Elia restaurant, where the freshest catch of the day is brought out to you to choose from, and local musicians serenade guests, the atmosphere is relaxed and a kids' menu thankfully keeps youngsters happy. —Sarah Leigh Bannerman Price: from $229 per nightAddress: Panormo Geropotamou, 740 57, Greece"

The Royal Blue Resort (Crete, Greek Islands) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Set on a spectacular stretch of Cretan beachfront, the Royal Blue Resort lives up to both of the adjectives in its name. No fewer than 38 pools dot the property, not to mention the sun-kissed sea of loungers and cabanas with private Aegean access. Ultra-luxe offerings on site include a jewelry shop, private wine tastings, and a full-service beauty spa. Rooms take advantage of stunning sea views with pendant lighting, plush earth-tone linens, and charming stonework details." - Tablet Hotels

Our second time at this beautiful hotel. Staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful and some remembered us from last year which was very sweet. We stayed half board which suits us fine as we are not big eaters. A very good choice of breakfast and evening meals, to sort all tastes. There was plenty for all! |Even it being the end of the season everywhere was very clean and tidy. Rooms very nicely kitted out with everything you need, with really comfortable beds and pillows in our opinion. |Having places to walk around what is like a village setting there are 3 main areas you can move around and take in different settings during your stay and according to weather which was by the way just the right temperature for us. There is a quiet fresh water adult only pool, a large sea water pool which looks out over the sea that has excellent staff and good food and a beach area where as you can imagine parents like to take their children to, but there are quieter areas to the beach also. The beach is a well protected private area. Great beach bar here too. There is evening entertainment and activities if you want to join in. The cocktail bar overlooking the beach is a lovely venue too. |Altogether once again a delightful stay we would recommend.

We had a fantastic and relaxing stay here in September for 10 nights.|| The resort is beautiful and has an air of calm about it. All the staff are pleasant and cheerful and make you feel very welcome. Our room was spotless, modern with gentle muted colours. We had a superior room with a terrace and shared pool. The terrace was sheltered by olive trees and we were a few steps from the pool which we shared with 4 other rooms. It was such a beautiful place to sit and enjoy a drink and read.||The room was cleaned every day and the housekeeping team were all very pleasant and considerate. Clean pool towels were available as often as you wanted and at no extra charge. The fridge in the room is empty and there is a supermarket 10 mins walk from the hotel to the right where you can buy some cold drinks to keep in the fridge. They also sell plenty of souvenirs and snacks.||We were half board and we couldn’t fault the food. Both breakfast and dinner had an array of different dishes for you to choose from and we always found something we liked and fancied. ||We also used the indoor gym most days as it wasn’t very busy. It has a good selection of free weights and equipment. ||We went into Rethymno by taxi which is definitely worth a visit. Lots of shops and restaurants. Lovely little narrow streets to explore in the old town which is very picturesque. ||We would definitely recommend this hotel and we will definitely come back ourselves at some point.

This resort was paradise! Very friendly staff, amazing facilities, clean rooms and pool, it had everything! As a solo traveler, I felt very at home and at ease the moment I arrived when I was met with some complimentary drinks and a wide smile. The resort has everything you need on-site, including a secluded beach, multiple pools, spa, gym, tennis court, gift shop/pharmacy, multiple restaurants and bars. They also offer entertainment in the evenings (I went to a "Greek Night" with Greek food, music and dancing) and free fitness classes (I attended a morning yoga class outdoors with a view of the breathtaking Cretan Sea). There was also a free Thalassotherapy session included in the booking, which I combined with massages for a very tranquil and enriching spa experience. The buffet at the main restaurant has so many options that I didn't eat the same meal on multiple evenings.||I can't recommended this resort enough for anyone traveling to Crete for an escape where you're looked after very well and don't have to think too much what to do, whether you're a couple or family or even solo traveling like I was. It was a truly refreshing escape and the friendly staff and amazing facilities made it very much worth the cost. Thank you very much to the Royal Blue team for making my trip a relaxing and memorable one! I'll definitely be returning in the near future :)

We had a wonderful stay at the Royal Blue Hotel. Our room was lovely, light and comfortable, with a balcony overlooking the beach and pool — perfect for watching the sunset in the evenings.||We initially didn’t book half board as we weren’t sure about having a buffet for dinner, but ended up trying the buffet on two nights and were really impressed. The food was of high quality with plenty of choice to suit every taste. The breakfast buffet was equally excellent, and sitting out on the terrace first thing in the morning was peaceful and relaxing.||We also dined at Elia restaurant on one evening. The setting was beautifully romantic, the food outstanding, and the staff were both knowledgeable and happy to recommend wines that paired perfectly with our meal.||During our stay we hired a car, which allowed us to explore a bit further. We visited Preveli Beach and also swam at the hidden waterfalls in the Kourtaliotiko Gorge — a highlight of the trip and a truly memorable experience.||Overall, a brilliant stay and a hotel we would happily return to.

We had a wonderful stay at The Royal Blue Hotel in Crete. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel so welcome – everyone was incredibly friendly, professional, and always happy to help with anything we needed. The hotel itself is beautifully maintained and spotlessly clean, creating a really relaxing atmosphere. The food was a highlight of our trip – absolutely delicious with plenty of choice at every meal. Whether breakfast, lunch, or dinner, everything was fresh and full of flavour. The service in the restaurant was excellent too, which made dining even more enjoyable. Overall, this is a perfect place for a relaxing holiday in Crete. Friendly staff, immaculate rooms, and fantastic food – we couldn’t have asked for more. We would definitely recommend The Royal Blue Hotel to anyone visiting the island and look forward to returning again soon!

If they say ‘Home is where the heart is’ then The Royal Blue has certainly become our second home as it steals a small piece of our hearts every time we leave . This was our 4th visit in two years and people ask us why we keep returning to the same place . I guess these are the reasons ..|1) Location : The Royal Blue is just an oasis of calm , tucked away in an unspoilt area of Crete. There are no tavernas nearby or rowdy bars so this is not for you if you are looking for a party hotel . Instead you’ll find peace, tranquility , sea views and sunsets to die for and restaurants offering amazing fresh food . From our point of view we hope that this calm atmosphere never changes as even when the hotel is full to capacity it never feels so - in fact the hotel just seems to absorb the crowds and remains therapeutically relaxing and laid back .|2) The staff : from the moment you walk through the front doors you just feel as if your troubles melt away . You are met by smiling reception staff who genuinely are pleased to welcome you . These smiles are on all the staff throughout the hotel despite it being the end of the season . The restaurant staff are always attentive at breakfast- special mention to Rokas and Katarina who looked after us every morning, remembering our drinks orders without us having to say a word. |Another mention to Dinitris who always seemed to be around at check in and check out to move our luggage with a smile and a joke . |Every slick operation has a powerhouse behind the scenes and, in this case, that is the Guest Relations Manager , Anastasia . She works tirelessly to ensure the face of the hotel is always warm and professional. If you are fortunate enough to meet her then you will encounter a smile and an attitude that is wonderfully warm and friendly. You know that she will do her utmost to ensure your stay is as perfect as possible. ||3) The beach : this is one of the best assets as it’s sheltered from the sea and so is accessible even when the winds are high and other beaches are red-flagged. The major beach attraction is the beach manager, Vasillis. Nothing is too much trouble and he provides a true 5 star service whether you’re relaxing in a cabana or sitting on the sand. This year he was joined by his young protégé, Grigoris who was doing a season after completing his national service. The two of them were the perfect double act and we couldn’t have felt more looked after. |In summary The Royal Blue is the perfect destination for a truly relaxing holiday but what truly makes it is the staff and there are two individuals who need singling out because they truly understand what five star service means - Anastasia and Vasillis , thank you once again for treating us like royalty for the week . We are both incredibly grateful to you both and I hope The Royal Blue realises what gems it has amongst its staff . See you next year for visit 5 !!

What a wonderful experience. Fabulous hotel and the star of the show were the staff. Very attentive and genuine. Special mention to Katerina, Maria, Dimitris and Rokus. Theo, the chef was very helpful in explaining the food on offer. Front of house were extremely helpful too since Tui were nowhere to be found,|Food was delicious and our room was in a lovely quiet position, |Beach, pools and entertainment all fab.|Only moan would be the price of drinks. In particular the coke. Over 5 euros for a small 250mil bottle of coke was ridiculous. Massive mark up.|Otherwise a lovely experience. We will be back.

We stayed at The Royal Blue Resort in July and had a fantastic time. The resort feels like a peaceful village – spacious, well-kept, and with a great mix of privacy and social atmosphere. The staff were consistently warm, professional, and genuinely caring. The food was great and the rotating buffet kept things interesting, though drinks were on the pricey side. We also enjoyed a massage and manicure – both excellent. There’s a small shop on-site for basic needs and another store just outside the resort with more variety (no fresh produce, though). Overall, a beautifully run resort with a relaxing and welcoming vibe. We’d happily come back!
