The Royal Hotel Mornington & Walter’s Dining Hall

Sometimes I feel like giving 5 stars is a disservice, but when everything is good, it's hard not to. The rooms are well furnished, with just the right amount of quirk. The location is unbeatable, right off the high street with the Bay view from the window and literally everyone working at the hotel has been friendly and helpful. It's a grand old building and well worth the visit.

Had a really enjoyable lunch with a girlfriend yesterday. I’d booked a table inside but the staff were more than happy to let us move outside. Service was great- lovely young wait staff very friendly and attentive. Food was very good- I had a side of broccoli and wedges- too much for me to finish, both very good. View over the water was lovely on a sunny day. Great spot with huge range of places to sit. Good menu choices, enough variety for a vegetarian which is not always the case so a bonus. Would thoroughly recommend. Beautiful beach to walk on too.

Wow! What a completely pleasant surprise. Walter's Dining Hall is fabulous. The interior decor moodily resembles something straight out of Shanghai. And the food is amazing. Rich authentic Asian flavours. Best Asian eating experience on the Mornington Peninsular.

Location great. Food is terrible, I have been here a couple of times hoping it gets better. Every time we come the food is horrible and over priced. Fish was so over cooked and was not fresh. chicken was hardly cooked. we spent $250 for two mains and one starter 2 drinks, I expect a lot better. Won’t be coming back. Do better.

We have been here a few times for lunch. The 1st & 2nd time was fantastic. The last 4 times the service has been not as good. We went on a hot day asked for the fan to be turned on, no sorry they don't work. Go to ladies toilet lucky if you can lock a door or the toilet seat might be hanging off & we went this time not fixed yet.The veggies were not hot with our meals. The seafood marinara was OK but calamari toughtough. The best part of the meal was the garlic bread.

I booked lunch for 3 people over internet several days in advance. I received confirmation email. On arrival at the restaurant, they had no booking for us and tried to say I must have cancelled. I did not cancel. I showed my confirmation email (printed). I am 78 and the impression I was given was that I was old and must have forgotten!! It did not give a good impression. It was a special lunch for grandparents with their grandson. The restaurant was nearly empty anyway. We were not advised of the procedure for ordering our food and drinks. After sitting for a while wondering what to do, we approached the desk (manned by 2 people absorbed by the computer but ignoring the diners) and were told to go to the bar area and order, paying in advance. We did this. The food was good, so the chef was obviously doing a great job, but the service was minimal. We will not return or recommend it.

Had a wonderful lunch at Walter's Dining Hall yesterday. The food and drinks were beautiful. The waitress was absolutely lovely. Very friendly and knowledgeable about the food and drinks on offer. Attentive without being obtrusive and she looked after us very well during the afternoon. Combination of the lovely food, the nice room decor and the wonderful service we received from our waitress will definitely mean we will be back. Thank you for a very pleasant experience.

Walter's was a great new find for us locals. One of our AirBnb guests recommended the restaurant and we could not wait to try it out. We got the perfect table for us and every course on the Valentine's Day Set menu was delicious and planned perfectly. The staff were well trained and attentive. We highly recommend this restaurant and will definately refer our guests and of course return very soon. :-) Trudy and Sam - Balcombe Retreat Mornington
