Where Was 'Too Much' Netflix Filmed? Behind the Scenes of Lena Dunham's London Show | Condé Nast Traveler

"Jess’s rather involved meeting with her director unfolds in this characterful Beaconsfield pub, which claims to be the oldest freehold pub in the country and has appeared in Hot Fuzz, The Theory of Everything, several episodes of Endeavour, and a Midsomer Murders episode too." - James Medd

Stellar all round. A brilliant piece of history that's truly worth a visit. So wonderful to have so many English classics on the menu, not many places doing suet puddings, bubble & squeak, and steamed pud desserts anymore! Great beer selection too, almost entirely local UK beers. Staff were fantastic, we had a younger female server (didn't catch her name unfortunately!) and she was wonderful. Attentive and open to have a chat with us. Food and drinks came out quick but we did get there before the lunch rush, after the rush had arrived our desserts took a little while to come out, but that was the only issue we had.

Amazing vibe and delish Sunday roasts. I love that place we come rather frequenyly for its unique medieval atmosphere filled with history and magic. The old part of the building is one of a kind with its nukes, fireplaces and old twisted beams. The beer selection is also great, some of them only available here. Dogs are welcome and always treated with sweet words from staff... and lots of treats! It id a great place to bring guests from abroad or treat youtself to a lovely dinner!

Open fires, low ceilings and no music. How wonderful. Had an excellent friday night dinner here with the fam. Just the right side of busy - for atmosphere and still good service. steaks were cooked very well. The pie was a hit with one son and the burger a hit with the other. The salad that comes with the steak was great too - not a tick box exercise but something that really added - romaine lettuce and parmesan and tomato and dressing. Desserts were ok. both sticky toffee and chocolate puddings were a little 'cakey' rather than desserty. but I'm picking holes now cos it was really good!! (sorry for rubbish photos - too busy having fun)

Google
What a find, tucked away down a narrow country road (worth bearing in mind if you are coming in a larger vehicle). This is a truly unique and historic pub, full of character and charm. From the moment you walk in it feels welcoming, with cosy corners, open fireplaces and that traditional English pub atmosphere you rarely come across these days. We were lucky enough to be seated right by the fire and it was kept going throughout our meal, adding to the experience and making it feel even more special. The food was spectacular, generous portions cooked to perfection with plenty of flavour. Service was excellent too, friendly and attentive without being over the top. The ambience really stood out. It strikes the perfect balance of lively and relaxed, set in a beautiful country setting that makes you want to stay longer. A nice touch is that they even have their own branded glasses available to buy if you want to take a little piece of the pub home with you. Absolutely recommend a visit to anyone looking for a traditional English pub with history, great food and a welcoming atmosphere. I hope I get the chance to enjoy it again soon.

Google
Absolutely spectacular. Girlfriend treated me to surprise dinner and I did not know where we were going, but she certainly did her research. Breathtakingly historic and preserved interior, solid real ale options and a no-nonsense, comforting traditional and delicious pub menu including old school steamed Steak and Kidney pudding and desserts. Very good value for money. Highly recommended.

Google
We really enjoy the pub and its atmosphere—full of character. However, we were disappointed with the food and service during our recent visit. We ordered food and didn’t have to wait long, which was great. Unfortunately, the roast dinner didn’t meet expectations. The potatoes were quite hard, the chicken was a bit cold in the middle, beef hard and the cauliflower side had a sour taste. After the main course, we were left waiting quite a while before anyone came to take our dessert order. The delay in service took away from the overall experience.

Google
They say it’s the oldest pub in England. The decor is very traditional and allows to dive into (pre)medieval time. The food is splendid and they offer a lot to choose from. The local ale we tried was especially great.

Google
Beautiful old pub with great food (although pricey) and with a real atmosphere. However service is pretty hopeless. Ignored on entering the pub for a good 10 minutes. Then bar staff seem unable to add the bill correctly. Go for the atmosphere, not the service.

Yelp
The oldest pub in all of England. Her 900-year history could surely tell a tale or two. This is a must visit whenever visiting the UK. From the rustic furniture to the musty scent of centuries past, this place is iconic and full of history. We only came here to share a drink and admire her beauty, but this is certainly a place I would come back to. Friendly staff and patrons. A true gem of historical significance.

Yelp
On our usual pilgrimage to the oldest pub in Britain, since Saxon times, for Pablo's beloved Owd Rodger. He should have checked before we went to make sure they had it. Still it's an experience, sitting by the fire , enjoying some conversation with the locals, some whitebait and cider to wash it down. The rain was coming down gently. Legend has it that Prince Charles (later King Charles II) hid in the Priest Hole in the roof of the inn. In 1643 Roundhead soldiers executed a dozen Irish Confederate Cavaliers and raised their heads on pikes outside the inn. Come for the beer, come for the food or just come to sit an mull over the history.

Yelp
Great classic English pub, ordered a couple of Coca Colas. Love the atmosphere. Great service. Highly recommend checking it out.

Yelp
Purchased my Brother a gift voucher for dinner & a few pints. Only regret is I'm in the USA & won't get to be there with him. Great Place, good food & incredible history. Bob N.

Yelp
The onion soup is the best I have ever tasted in my journeys. Truly amazing! The Sunday roast however did not stand up and was pitiful. The location itself is interesting and definitely old world. I would go back for the soup and I would change my main course.

Yelp
Driving one hour from London center to this 900 hundred years pub in Beaconsfield, struck by its relaxing ambience and large portions of sunny roast. Worth to try and need reservation.

Yelp
As a newbie in Europe, my visit is made more welcome when locals take me to their favorite pub deep in the English countryside. I appreciate these types of visits more because they are usually off the beaten path and instead of tourists, one will find locals frequenting this spot. Due to popularity, it is advised to make reservations in advance for dinner since this pub fills up immediately. Second, because of the close proximity of Pinewood studios, almost after most shoots, this place will be packed. Third, come with your camera, because the building itself is absolutely charming and beautiful. Standing at the bar, imagine my delight at seeing two Springer Spaniels on leads walk right through the restaurant. The conservative and phobic reactions that occur in the US crack me up. I feel that people are dirtier than dogs....and that's pertains to the viral kind. The menu is pretty extensive and my alcohol-lacking enzyme self was most enthused to hear that they offered 1/2 pints. Hooray! I went with the delightfully loose and watery Orchard Pig cider and I mean this with absolute endearment. Because it was not strong, it was easily consumed prior to my supper. I washed this down with an appetizer of Melted camembert cheese with garlic and rosemary. When in Rome, I elect to have fare that is local and reflective of the area. I had been dying to try Bubble and Squeak so the minute I found it on the menu, I ordered the plate: The Roasted Pork Belly with red cabbage, bubble & squeak, and Bramley apple sauce. The roasted skin of the pork belly was amazingly crunchy yet caramelized the minute I started to chew. The bubble & squeak was like a croquette but equally savory. My counterpart ordered the Bangers and Mash, which was equally as good. I have noticed that the British sausages are slightly drier than the ones I've had in Paris and Prague. Overall, a wonderful prelude to my last evening in the UK. The people, the food, and the overall charm of this establishment has me looking forward to a return visit in the near future.

Yelp
This. Was. Fantastic. A 900-year-old pub in the English countryside, with an interesting building, good service, and great food. I had the venison stew, a special- chunks of tender meat in a rich gravy, with carrots etc. Can't remember what my friend had. We had ales on tap, can't remember those either. This is what I get for not reviewing right away... The overall experience was great. The prices were reasonable for what you get. The decor inside was eclectic and amusing.

Michael P.

Yelp
Unfortunately the service and food did not live up to the expectations that I got from the reviews. Perhaps it was an off day but as it was the only day I went there it was a huge disappointment. Service was slow and disorganised. After getting drinks it was and age before our order for food was taken. After 45 minutes of so I though that they had forgotten us. When the food did arrived it wasn't hot. The roast potatoes were soggy and the meat dry. Not good when you are paying so much. Should have complained at the time however we were tired, jaded and just wanted to leave. Definitely an attractive place to visit and I might return but just for a drink.

Yelp
AMAZING! The oldest Free House in England! Beautiful beautiful beautiful decor! Proper old school, small little areas that make you feel its 200years ago! a few fire places to set yourself for the afternoon. Food - great pub food. Classic perfectly done. Had the perfect Sunday roast on Sunday (!) & came back on the Monday, found ourselves a spot by the fire place and stayed a couple of hours sipping on our warm cider !! And super friendly staff!

Yelp
Fasten your seatbelts, we've gone international. The following blog is broadcast live from London. Follow our journey via the wonders of the internets. Wot-ho old chaps! The Royal Standard is known to be the oldest pub in England and is luckily very near to where we were staying with WordMonkey's parentals. This pub holds a special place as it was the last supper we had before leaving for Melbourne. And what you want before departing old Blighty is a top meal at a proper pub. On this auspicious night I also had my one and only argument with a quizmaster. Q - What is the name of the NZ Rugby League Team. I chimed in with Kiwis and she only accepted the answer of Auckland. Set me right off. But on this occasion I was fortunate to not only have the parentals again but also my brother and his partner, who had only arrived a few months previously and had not had the chance to break out of London. So what better way to introduce everyone than at an olde pub that can only be found at the end of a windy road in a hidden town on the outskirts of London. As you will see from the photos, we don't have anything like this in Australia - a 900-year-old coaching inn. Inside there are numerous fires roaring and many different rooms. This pub has a good selection of real ales, which are hand-pumped into your pint glass after being asked if you want a long glass or one with a handle. These ales are the UK equivalent of our craft beers - the only difference is that they are served at room temperature. I was amazed at how quickly I got back into the swing of pints after otherwise drinking half pints at The Taphouse or the usual 360ml bottles. We decided to have just mains as we knew from previous experiences the meals were generous and we would be heading to Heston's pub that evening. WordMonkey decided on the Grilled Goats Cheese Salad as an entre serve and it was more than enough for someone with a normal appetite. Myself and Father WordMonkey opted for Chicken Leek and Mushroom Midsummer Murder Resurrection Pie. Both a mouthful in description and serving, it is named after the English TV show of the same name that is also filmed very close in the surrounding village. The pie crust was perfectly cooked and the piping-hot filling was well balanced with moist chicken and tasty veggies. I was envious of what my brother ordered (below) but you can't go past a good pie. Fish Pie with mashed potato topping was what the remaining ladies chose due to the chilly weather. It was great pub stodge - the topping was crisped to perfection and had a good selection of seafood inside. My brother settled on the Roasted Pork Belly and as you can see - they are not stingy on the superb crackling. Keep an eye out for more London Blog Posts in the near future as we will be eating our way around the 'Best City in the World' according to Boris Johnson - London Mayor.

Yelp
Really gorgeous old pub, ca 900 yrs, wonderful atmosphere, sat outside on a gorgeous sunny day. Sure it would be equally as wonderful on a cold day inside by the huge log fire. We had mussels and lamb stew. Delicious!!!! Friendly service! Highly recommend.

Yelp
This building is brilliant, for nothing else go to check it out. So many little nooks and crannies with olden furniture, you could end up sitting on a throne around the 'knights of the round table' table :) Or on a church bench converted into a booth corner. The bric a brac dotted around is immense with interesting art work and olden toys all over. Then we come to the immensely long beer list and drinks available - not for the lighthearted. The food is not too expensive for portion sizes and proximity to London. Is of an average standard with amazingly tasty to meh OK. The amount of Lamb was quite astonishing and the parsnip mash was super good. Worth a try. There is a lovely little walk nearby to wonder off the food and look out for red kites.

Yelp
The place is amazing. As an American traveling to the UK for the first time, this is what I pictured as an authentic English Pub and restaurant. The food was amazing as so was the staff. Everything was so good. We didn't want to leave.

Yelp
Holy moly this place is cool. I didn't know what to expect (especially traveling on a one lane road through the woods), but we were completely in awe of this place when we pulled up. So, we knew a little of the history, but the atmosphere itself did not disappoint. We felt like we traveled back in time and we were eating in a cottage pub. This was my first experience with British food, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I ordered the sausage and mash and thought it was very good (ate it all). The hubs got fish and chips and felt the same. There are two things you must get if you come. #1 the Camembert cheese and bread #2 sticky pudding. Just getting those two items was worth the trip. They also have a phenomenal beer list. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Awesome lovely pub grounds and historic buildings. The food was very good and the service fantastic. We had fish and chips which was beautiful and a bass with risotto special of the day. I give it 5 stars and will be back soon.

Yelp
Avoid at all costs Been going to this pub on and off for 20 years but it has been going down. Today was the worst meal ever. Roast lamb was chewy and hard to cut, swede crunchy, Yorkshire pudding soggy and horrid almost like a wet towel. Roast potatoes were rubbery, not sure how anybody can call that "roast" potatoes. Waitress helpful and friendly and completely agreed with our feedback. Think management would care? Well the manageress avoided coming to the table when the waitress told her about the problems so she could hear for herself the feedback. Then finally went to the till and told her and she could not care less. She even said the chef thought it was a good meal and ordered us to pay for our drinks with somebody else. Could not care less! Avoid this pub and find somewhere more friendly, inviting and tasty.

Yelp
Old place and lots of fun. Fantastic food and I'm betting always busy. But worry not - you'll find a place to sit. One of the best restaurants on our circle tour into the West of London.
google avatar

Meike B.

Yelp
I was first introduced to the Royal Standard quite a few years ago. Finding it down a winding country lane was quite an adventure - entering this ancient pub via an old barrel just added to its quaintness. Have been back with visitors regularly since. What a shame though that the food has been changed. This was one of the best pubs, not just for the scenery. The food now is quite a disappointment, especially if you're not much of a meat eater. We chose fish'n'chips and an interesting sounding salad. The batter and chips were too greasy, the salad came without dressing. I am sure I will be back, though, but probably just for a drink and for the atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
Small in the middle of nowhere pub. Real authentic, all locals only it seemed. They were super friendly to me as an American visiting the UK. Fantastic beer selection on draft. Low ceilings so watch it if you are tall like me. Good sandwhiches and the typical English fare.
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
Lovely pub in the middle of patch of lovely green and fields. Some history apparently too. We went on a 'Wet the Baby's Head' mission, attempting to drink everyone of the pubs fine ales - [success on that front, much to our liver's dismay] On special request, they provided enormous jugs for us to get merry. Good food too - only one vegetarian option. One downer, the management were quite rude towards us. Sure we were loud, but we were away from the rest of the clientele, and considering we spunked in excess of £400 between us, you might have expected some warmth!
google avatar

Peter F.

Yelp
Great pub - very hard to get to, and I am never sure it is well supported by locals sometimes. Lovely little rooms and little places to sit and natters with mates and the Mrs. Good beer normally, and local brews too. Friendly people and food whilst a bit ordinary is normally good and great portion sizes.
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
We have been here 3 times , and Every time the food has been perfect, the beer has been the best it can be and the service....remarkable! Everything from the Prawns and Onion Soup, to the Lamb and Partridge (special) have been prepared to perfection. All of this coupled with the history in this establishment make for a perfect way to spend an evening in England!

Yelp
Very old pub. Many old rooms, creaky ceiling beams, stone steps up and down: it's the quintessential country pub. There's a large list of ales (including some local ones), lagers and wines: and they have a helpful drinks menu that gives full descriptions of everything, beers included. It was mobbed with people today (a Sunday afternoon), and is undoubtedly packed every weekend. It is a large place, though, so if you haven't made a reservation wait a while, a table will open up somewhere. The Sunday roast was excellent, and featured venison as a choice as well as beef and lamb, and the veg (frequently a sore point for me) was cooked perfectly. It wasn't cheap, at £12 (for lamb and venison), £11 (for pork) or £13 (for beef), but it was very well done and plentiful. Their vegetarian options are fewer, but tasty. The only thing that rubs me the wrong way is that they go a little over the top on Ye Olde Pub paraphenelia junk cluttering the walls and written into the menu. Check out their website: it's full of info about their menu, drinks, pub history, walks, pictures, and dog- and kid-friendly policies. Huge car park, lots of outdoor tables, lots of walks.

Yelp
Always delivers, I just love the feeling of the past is all around you! Food is always great and the staff are a delight!

Yelp
A lovely little pub that's been around for centuries apparently. One of the oldest pubs in Britain. They have their own special ale, and you are guaranteed to be sloshed after the 3rd, and probably not get up again. Jolly Rodger it's called. Place is a little dark though, and could do with a lick of paint inside, but it is also a famous place for filming. Hot Fuzz was filmed in there.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice old pub, which tbh could do with a good clean (there's character then there's just tierd and in need of tlc) That said great staff and great food very large portions! Nice outside area if the weathers half decent!

Yelp
One of the oldest pubs in England!! ( Allegedly!) This is a lovely pub in a great setting, it has a lot of history to it and is definitely worth a visit. I think it appears in a lot of guide books as you do seem to get alot of passing tourists!. The beer is good, they serve alot of real ales and they also serve alot of ciders which is quite unusual to find. The prices however are slightly higher than other local pubs. We ate here and had good englsh comfort food! Mine was a delight, I had shepherds pie with muttonwhich was very good however my companion had steak & kidney pudding which he renamed gristle pie!! Too much suet and not enough meat!! But this hasn't put us off going again!

Qype User (.

Yelp
Walking around this pub is like going back in time. This is what English pubs ought to or used to look like. Not only a great atmosphere the food is good - they call it grandma's cooking and it is just that. The rabbit and pheasant are cooked simply and is tasty without fussy presentation. Not a gastro pub but tastes like one. Specialises in local craft beers and they have won awards for both drinks and food. If you love British pubs then this is one to see, if you can find it. cheers.

Yelp
I never write reviews but I feel compelled to write this one. My husband, son and I visited the Royal Standard yesterday. The pub is quaint and interesting but the food was extremely poor. At £93 for 3 starters, 3 mains and two side veg (our drinks were additional) we were expecting good food. However, our meal overall was poor quality and my cheese burger was inedible as the meat tasted off. I asked my husband, who would eat anything, to try a piece of my burger and he spat it into his napkin as it tasted so bad. I informed the waiter who was very apologetic and replaced it with a chicken caesar salad at my request. The caesar salad consisted of a small bowl of lettuce leaves mixed with some chopped cold roast chicken. This was very heavily dressed in caesar dressing and there were a few croutons on top but no parmesan to be seen! When we asked for the bill, my husband noticed that we had been charged £16.95 for the inedible burger as well as 14:50 for the salad. This is disgraceful customer care. We should not have been charged for food that was inedible and the salad should have been on the house in light of the disruption to our meal.... The waiter did remove the burger from the bill when asked but the new bill still included the charge for the salad!! We will not visit the Royal Standard again and I would advise you to avoid dining there if you visit.

Yelp
I am from Australia and i visited your establishment before Christmas 2018. The staff were terrific and the food fantastic not to mention the beer.

Qype User (.

Yelp
Brilliant setting and building. Shame about the photocopied menus whioch really does not match the general atmosphere of the pub. The yoprkshire puddings were sturdy and chewy which was a complete let down. I'd have preferrred more gravy as well, but the meat was cooked nicely and the veg were fantastic. Desserts were all disappointing. Eton mess was VERY sweet, I think sugar had been added to the cream which should have been on the menu as chatilly cream and then I'd have known what to expect! I am pretty sure that we saw much larger portions being given to other tables as well. We were a late sitting, and I got the impression they were running out and the yorkshires had been left to warm - accounting for their super hard texture. The apple crumble was soggy, as was the biscuit base of the cheesecake. I'd recommend you get there early and don't bother with dessert. I'd definitely go there again, just to give them a chance to redeem themselves :)

Yelp
A lovely pub in a lovely countryside setting. It is situated in the village of Forty Green on the edge of Beaconsfield. It's quite a famous pub and meant to be one of the oldest pubs in Britain. It is very old and very creaky and dark so do not go expecting it to be bright and modern. It is a great place to go for a gorgeous Sunday roast but it gets very busy. I would recommend reserving a table for peak times like weekends.

Yelp
I went to this pub recently for the first time to celebrate a friends 40th birthday. I loved it and would definitely return. Apparently it's one of the oldest pubs in Britain, which just adds to its charm. It has a great atmosphere and character, but does feel quite dark and cosy in there. I like that, but it's not to everyones taste so thought it was worth mentioning.. The food is fantastic, although it isn't cheap, but you do get what you pay for.

Yelp
Magical place, right off the road with some lovely outside seating. The inside is cosy with exposed beams and low ceilings. Nooks and crannies with armour and tapestries on the wall. V relaxing, food was v good and a nice selection of beers and wines. Staff were friendly and chatty. Thoroughly recommended..

Yelp
Tremendous setting and building. Over crowded, hurried (two Sunday lunch sittings), food - ordinary. Plenty of choice of drinks. Summary - someone's overpriced, overhyped money spinning destination schmub!
