The Rutland Hotel, Edinburgh, Scotland - Explore & Book

"There’s plenty to catch your eye at this glitzy hideaway, set in a Georgian building bang in the centre of Edinburgh’s West End and just a walk from bustling Princes Street. At the front door you’re greeted by a model cow on the pavement; raise your eyes and you’ll spot a heifer emerging from a window upstairs. Cows are a bit of a theme here, not just as decorative amusement but also in the form of top-quality Aberdeen Angus beef - the Scottish capital’s first "gourmet steakhouse". The rooms and apartments exude a similar sense of vibrant fun. Expect ornate beds (some of them four poster), perhaps an outrageous orange or bright lime coloured chair, and the odd quirky lamp or sparkling chandelier. Furnshings and wallpapers are especially bold in the apartments, with their arresting pop-poster artworks, statement lighting, retro bar stools and in-suite kitchen islands. Overall the effect is bright and glamorous, without being completely OTT. A couple of rooms offer dreamy views of Edinburgh Castle, too. Downstairs there's a bar and basement nightclub, making this buzzy hotel the perfect bolthole for city slickers, couples and night owls alike. Highs A plum central location, with bars, boutiques and dining dens at your fingertips Food in the restaurant is impeccably sourced: the beef comes from local farms, the seafood from Scottish lochs - and much of it is seasonalIdeal for girls' weekends - the bar and basement club are gorgeously glamorous, there’s a long cocktail list, and you’ll find GHD hair straighteners in your room to help you get ready Surprisingly family-friendly, too, with cots, extra beds and a special menu for littl’uns. The apartment can sleep 4 adults, 2 children and a baby, and a couple of rooms interconnectWelcoming, helpful staff Lows Some might find the décor glitzy - but we loved itNote the apartments are in a nearby buildingThe double-glazed windows don’t open, so rooms can get stuffy, but air-con and central heating helpThe club can throb into the wee hours, so if you’re a light sleeper request a top-floor roomNo car park, but there’s an NCP car park 10 minutes’ walk away at the Sheraton Hotel" - Clare Hargreaves

"Say what you will about London, but in more than a few ways Edinburgh is the most European of the UK’s cities — and any way you cut it it’s certainly the most cosmopolitan town in Scotland. So a stylish little boutique hotel like the Rutland, where designer prints and modernist furnishings take the place of tartan and antiques, makes perfect sense here." - Tablet Hotels

This is our second time visiting the hotel and we are once again enchanted! The welcome is always warm and friendly, the room was spacious, bright, extremely clean and had all the amenities for our stay! It was cleaned perfectly every day! The furnishings everywhere are very interesting and chosen with great taste and attention. The location is perfect - everything is within walking distance. We tried their restaurant “The Huxley” a few times - it was very delicious, there were many interesting offers. I recommend it with both hands!

Really enjoyed our stay here, was nice to be in our own apartment but still have it serviced every day! Well stocked kitchen and mini bar with lots of choice, daily free waiter and milk for teas and coffees Beds and pillows were very comfortable and nil outside noise during night. We were on top floor and although only two flights of stairs it might be hard going if you have knee/back problems. All staff we encountered were lovely and approachable

We stayed in an executive double for 2 nights to celebrate our anniversary and my partners birthday. Check in was smooth, staff were lovely and welcoming. Hotel is in an excellent location, parking was about 5/10min walk and half price with hotel. We were on the 3rd floor which the lift didn't reach and reception told us it was only a few steps to the 3rd floor, it was actually a flight of stairs and then what we would call "a few steps" not great when you're an overpacker like me but it is what it is. The room was lovely, clean, except the used piece of dental floss that was stuck to a towel, and the fact the wifi didn't work in the room for the first 24hours rendering the tv apps useless and having to waste our data to listen to music and watch tv. The radio did connect via bluetooth which was a nice touch. We had booked the Rutland for some chill child free time and had expected to spend more time in the room however the lack of wifi did hinder this. We cannot recommend the Huxley and Kyloe enough, definate value for money and an all round great experience. The mini fridge ws stocked nicley however it did create heat in the cupboard it was in which resulted in melted tea cakes that were provided. Upon check out we found there were some cleaning works being done on the only exit to the building, and were told by reception "Oh you might just get your feet a bit wet" Not really ideal when these are slippy steps dry and having to carry our luggage down the wet stairs was not very 4 / 5 star. Overall, I feel like the stay was not worth the money, We would return if we got a good deal however full price we did not feel was worth it. There are definately better hotels for the price we paid, whilst we acknowldge we were paying for location also, we feel that we could pay less for more which is ashame.

The staff at the Rutland is FABULOUS. They couldn’t have been more accommodating and helpful. They went above and beyond to help us. And the room was so well appointed and large - even had a curling iron. The location is perfect- just a short walk to the castle and old town. We dined at their affiliated steak house which proved a scrumptious meal. Will definitely return and recommend to travelers to Edinburgh

The hotel was plush and cosy without feeling dated. We loved the view from room no.10, and it was a generous size with an incredibly comfortable bed. We didn't hear anything from our neighbours and really appreciated how peaceful the hotel was, despite its central location. The team are brilliant as well, and helped us make bookings for Kyloe and even gave us a discount there.

Great. It was clean and special. when we arrived the staff was exceptional with helping what to do while are room got ready since we arrived from London early. The room was so cool, GREAT VIBE!! Came in and it was retro with a view of the castle and some classical music playing. It set the tone for elegance. Check out was painless. The restaurant was very nice and easy to get a quick pint of Guiness.

The most lovely staff were so attentive, brought up our luggage when the lift was not working on our arrival and then rang up later to make sure we had everything we needed. The castle view was amazing and we sat watching the light change through the evening. The breakfast included was more than I expected at the restaurant on the ground floor. We also ate at Kyloe and could not recommend it more!

Chose to stay at the Rutland Hotel after seeing it on the Edinburgh Tourist site. Great place to stay, excellent rooms and amenities. One of the best beds and showers we have experienced. Kyloe is a great place to have dinner.||The only downside was that the sink drain was not working well but could not be rectified during our stay there.||Great and very helpful staff!
