Guide to Kiawah Island, South Carolina

"The Ryder Cup Bar in The Ocean Course Clubhouse is recommended for either lunch or dinner. It’s modern pub fare at its finest — with dishes like the Bagger Burger and the signature crispy shrimp serving as menu standouts. The location is also hard to beat; you’ll want to grab an outdoor table on the veranda to watch the sunset." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Wow! Even if you do not play golf be sure and visit the Ryder Cup for Dinner, drinks and a spectacular sunset!! The food, Old Fashioned and service were all spectacular. We ate outside looking out on the ocean. This view is truly priceless. 😍

We visited the island in December and the food and service was pretty good. I was excited to go back with friends who have been familiar with the island for more than 30 years. We were originally told it would be a 40 minute wait which we were totally fine with. Within 5 minutes we got called and that the table was ready. We were taken outside all the way to the end of the seating area and seated at a table with dirty stained chairs right next to the door where food was coming out of the kitchen. The mosquitos were unbearable. No amount of bug spray could have prepared us for that meal. The food took a very long time to come and when it finally did come we boxed it up to leave and eat it at home. The simple things that could have been done for guest enjoyment such as citronella candles or torches weren’t used. When we complained we were offered bug spray which shows it’s been an ongoing problem and the restaurant just didn’t care enough to warn guests or provide alternatives. $600 for a casual meal with friends is totally ridiculous when it was miserable. Furthermore the food was mediocre at best. Totally unimpressed.

Google
Beautiful view, but extremely limited seating. No reservations. The lunch menu is better. The falafel was amazing! Wish they had more healthy or vegan options. A bit on the pricey side. Keep in mind, this restaurant is essentially a bar, and it may not be appropriate to bring young children if you’re one of those adults who has an issue with adult conversations around children’s ears…

We’ve eaten here for last 3 visits. They don’t take reservations so you may need to wait but we’ve never had to wait long. The food is delicious and you may be able to order off the ocean course menu too. The highlight was the Executive chef, who is so nice, and came out to serve our teens their desserts and spoke to us for a bit. Thank you for a memorable and delicious dinner!

Google
This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. For starters, it was a minimum 85 degrees and extremely hot in the dining area. Multiple times I went to the bathroom just to cool off. It was so hot, that my salad was warm while eating it. On top of it, the service was very average, the food was very average - my sandwich had an excess of mayonnaise on it, as if the cap of the mayonnaise fell off and it exploded on my sandwich. I would prefer if I never came back to this place in my life as it was overpriced and a poor experience.

Google
The location is beautiful right on the golf course and ocean with seating inside and out. You can’t book so you can wait and enjoy a drink on the terrance if there is space. The food is okay. Nothing to go back for but nothing to send back to the kitchen either. We have the house special friend shrimp to start and they were a 3/5 the beef drip sandwich had sat under a heat lamp for too long and dried out fully.

Located at the Clubhouse for the world famous Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. We sat outside and had outstanding views of the golf course , the putting green and the ocean. I got a Waldorf chicken salad on croissant and it was very good. Truly excellent service.

Google
We had an excellent dinner at The Ryder Cup Bar. We’ve been here over 10 times over the years of visiting Kiawah Island, and always return! Last night I had the Cobb salad with shrimp— delicious! The shrimp were grilled perfectly. Others in our party enjoyed the Fish Tacos and Bagger Burger. We all love the wedge fries and our kids are fans of the onion rings! I would be too if I didn’t avoid gluten. In the past our family has also really enjoyed the crab cake sliders and fried green tomatoes. We were hungry and forgot to take pictures of the food, but captured the view. It’s beautiful!

Yelp
Great atmosphere, food and service. Take your guests and have a great time. The view of the ocean is calming and spectacular.

Yelp
We sat at the bar and had great service by a friendly bar tender. Hubs was excited to visit and and try this place bc he has played a lot of golf with my stepson who played Division I golf in college and played here a time or two. It's beautiful. Panoramic views from the large windows and lovely, historic, wooden architecture throughout. The menu is good. We had a burger and a chicken salad croissant with side salads and enjoyed them. We also tried their "famous" fried shrimp which was good, but nothing special and $25. My husband enjoyed his burger and my chicken salad sandwich was very very good. Fresh and delicious chicken salad on a fresh and soft croissant bun. Our side salads were great portion sized and fresh. All in all - VERY expensive lunch with no alcohol for 6 shrimp, a burger and a chicken salad sandwich for $90 with the tip. You're coming here for the golf, location and name/prestige. Worth the visit if you find yourself here - bc the food was very good and the views are amazing.

Yelp
We typically love visiting this place with all its scenic beauty. The views are incredible. Yesterday was a different story. We had gone directly from work and I was wearing a tank top and leggings (I work remotely). I noticed that we were treated very differently from when I am typically dolled up. Our waitress wasn't friendly at all and basically just said here are the menus. My boyfriend's pulled pork sandwich was extremely small. I did enjoy my crabcake sliders, but then certainly weren't worth $26. They also gave me a Caesar salad at first and I kindly reminded them I had ordered the mixed greens. We won't be back after this experience.

Yelp
The drive through the Kiawah Resort is lovely and when you round the corner and see the clubhouse, it's so worth the drive. We waited a bit to be seated for lunch which was totally fine - we walked around, visited the pro shop and checked out the memorabilia on display. Everyone was so professional and our outdoor table gave provided us with a fantastic view of the course and the beach beyond. Oh, the food? It was really good too! Good choices, came out fast and fresh. This was a highlight of our trip!

Yelp
Beautiful setting but everything went downhill from there. Drinks were awful and bar tenders acted as if they were bothered we were ordering drinks. Such a shame for a beautiful destination to have such bad bar service.
google avatar

Jeannine S.

Yelp
The food was excellent. I had the egg salad and my boyfriend had the burger. The view is amazing. If you can score a seat on the deck. Service was excellent as well. Totally worth price and amazing experience.

Yelp
The most beautiful lunch spot! It has been years since I have been to Ryder Cup. The ambiance, food, and just about everything there is just perfect! I had the Caesar salad with salmon. Teh salmon was cooked just right. Followed with an Ocean Course Ale I'd say it hit the spot. Others at my table had the crab cake slider, fish tacos, and Kentucky hot brown. All were exceptional! Just be expected to pay a little more than your average lunch spot. It is worth it for the experience. Tip for those who have never been. When you get to the gate, let them know you will be dining at the Ryder Cup and they will give you a free pass at the gate.

Yelp
A golf lover must! Beautiful views and good is delicious! We always visit at happy hour!

Yelp
Delicious food with a great view. We had the crispy shrimp, fried green tomatoes and burgers. They were cooked to perfection. Our server was at par.

Yelp
One Star= Gorgeous View and eating here gets you on the island! It's at the end so you can drive the entire island and see the gorgeous homes. This is worth it. You can sit on the rocking chairs and watch the ocean and golfers. Zero Stars= service and food. Horrendous service. Staff could care less. We sat for over 15 minutes and no one ever came. We had to go up to the hostess station and let them know. The lady that waited on us acted like we were bothering her. We ordered dessert which was over $20 for two people. Insane prices for dessert during lunch hours. We didn't even order lunch based on the previous reviews we read.

Austin G.

Yelp
My wife and I loved had a great evening at the Ryder Cup Bar. We initially sat outside, but it was too hot and staff was more than accommodating to find us a great table inside. Food was and service was great!

Austin A.

Yelp
Same thing most people say. The staff is rude and snobby. Typical overpriced bar food. Only go here for the view.

Yelp
The food was really well and it came out really fresh and fast. Everyone was really nice and their service was good. The scenery was exquisite and beautiful.

Yelp
Love the shrimp appetizer, burger and the view is fantastic. Call before to make sure there is no private event.

Yelp
Great view of the putting green and ocean breeze. Sunset view. Food and service good. Bartenders good too. Prices reasonable.

Yelp
This restaurant is one of my personal favorites on Kiawah Island! Everything I've had here has been delicious and the view is phenomenal!! Watching the ocean while eating is truly a vacation in itself. Our waiter, Thomas, was very quick and helpful. He refilled our drinks faster than we could ask. This time, we ordered the Crispy Shrimp appetizer which was delicious. It was more on the sweet side but very light. As an entree, I ordered the Crabcake sliders with a mixed greens salad. The entree came with 3 sliders including lettuce, tomato, and a special sauce. They had a perfect texture and flavor. The mixed greens salad was crisp and fresh. I would also recommend the She Crab soup as it was the BEST we had on our vacation! (And we tried the She Crab soup at every restaurant we visited) We try to come here at least once every year and have a fantastic experience. Parking is free in the parking lot right outside. I definitely recommend trying this restaurant and check out the gift shop on your way out.

Yelp
Obviously the scenery is why your there unless playing golf . The service was very good. The crispy shrimp was excellent. The highly touted grill cheese was about average. Bottom piece of sandwich bread was soggy. Maybe a layering issue on constructing the sandwich. The taste was very good. Perfect amount of spicy kick. Onion dip was average. Served with lays potato chips. Fish and chips was very good. Onion rings were a keeper.
google avatar

Corinne H.

Yelp
Always delicious food with a beautiful view. Always enjoy our time up at the Ryder Cup. The view is a must, make sure to sit outside when you go. The service is great! Crispy Shrimp. Lowcountry Grilled Cheese. Onion rings. Yum! Tasty!
google avatar

Patti D.

Yelp
Go here for the view, not the food or service! It is with going just to be able to gain access to Kiawah if you've never been. It's a beautiful community. Came for the lunch. Three of us ordered the fish and chips and I ordered the pimento grilled cheese with onion rings. We also started with the crispy shrimp. Four drinks, check was over $200 but that's to be expected. Fish and chips were some of the worst we've ever had, small portion, dry and tasted reheated, not fresh, fries were average as were the onion rings. I ordered the grilled cheese because of all the good reviews and it was good but you really have to like pimento cheese. Also, it was filling. The crispy shrimp was good but on the smaller side. The server was sweet but inefficient.

Yelp
Our first time to Kiawah and had to try Ryder Cup Bar porch to see Ocean and Ocean course. Magnificent views. We sat to the side to cut off a bit of the March winds. Bartender recommended a regional IPA and I tried the Bloody Mary. We shared a crab dip platter with Ritz crackers, cukes, carrots, celery. You go for the views, and you pay the price. We thought it was worth the price for one round. Nice Southern server and bartender. Everything getting spruced for the May 21 PGA. Kiawah golf, the Sanctuary hotel, the vistas, the private homes all wowed us. Ryder Bar was a nice place to toast our visit.

Yelp
Amazing food and stunning atmosphere! Best she crab soup & fish and chips in town :)

Yelp
The worst service I've ever had for a five star resort. The girl working the front desk the night of the marathon was rude and condescending. They told us the table was getting "cleaned" for 1 hour. After that time I inquired and they finally sat us outside after saying to sit inside to get seated quicker. They bumped us multiple times. The finally sat us 8 to a four top. It was ridiculous and we were all squished in. There was not enough room and they were so rude. It was a complete mess and no one knew what was going on. They were short staffed and it wasn't worth the multiple hundred dollar bill. Avoid.

Yelp
Had an amazing meal here! The view and atmosphere cannot be beat. We were staying at the Sanctuary but worth a trip even if you're somewhere else on Kiawah. The view of the golf course and the ocean was beautiful. They have chairs on the lawn for you to sit, have a drink, and watch the sunset when you're done. Everything we ate and drank was delicious - would consider it elevated bar food.

Jack H.

Yelp
Great food and drinks with a beautiful sunset view. Would recommend a trip out here to anyone staying on the island.
google avatar

Karen B.

Yelp
Beautiful view, but it is way too expensive. Excuse me $45 for one beer in a cocktail get the F out of here.
google avatar

Kristin S.

Yelp
We came here for a quick drink and to see the view of the Ocean Club. Once we got here, we decided we should stay for dinner but already had a reservation at a different restaurant. It's pricey, but that's what you would expect from a world-class golf resort. It was a cold day, but the views were beautiful. There are many couches and rocking chairs that you can sit on to have a drink. A great way to see people finish in 18.
google avatar

Yelp
Great burgers, great views. Love it. Oceanfront! Long drive out but so special. Check out the pro shop too.
google avatar

Yelp
We came here twice during our week vacation and loved it both times! Lunch is great and dinner also delicious. Loved the onion rings. The ocean views are next level. Also very kind staff.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was great and view is incredible. The one star is for the food poisoning I got after eating the shrimp and a steak salad. Do not recommend in my opinion.
google avatar

Glenn Y.

Yelp
Wonderful setting for bar food. Food ok but one is here for the setting and the drinks. Expensive as expected. Our service was outstanding. We were outside and decided we wanted to go in and our server found a table and moved us with no complaint.
google avatar

Yelp
Two things I am obsessed with at this hidden treasure! 1. The views of the ocean and golf course 2. The lowcountry grilled cheese. The views are spectacular year round here and there's plenty of seats around to sit and enjoy the views. When it's time to eat, this menu is loaded with yummy original items. My sandwich was pimento cheese, country ham pieces and a fried green tomato between 2 pieces of a cornmeal type Texas Toast. This is something I will be craving until I have it again. The onion rings were the best I've had in a long time. It is a little pricy which is why it gets 4 stars.

Yelp
I would have given this place a great rating if it were not for a major turn of events during the entree portion of our meal. Came here for dinner and ended up having to wait almost 1.5 hours to be seated. Somehow they were still accepting walk-ins up until 8pm despite the numerous groups already waiting in the lobby and outside. The outdoors area was beautiful with a nice view of the beach. Even though we were a party of only 2, we still had to wait for the larger parties to clear their seats. There did not appear to be any small tables that were meant for couples only. Once we were seated, we quickly received our drinks, but it took awhile to get our main course orders placed. The Fried Green Tomatoes (with pimento cheese, tomato jam, and arugula, $15) were great and had a little kick to the pimento. The She Crab Soup ($17) was unbelievably creamy and flavorful. The ale battered cod in the Fish and Chips (with malt vinegar and pickled pepper tartar sauce, $28) was super soft, light, and fluffy on the inside and flaky on the outside. However, the real trouble started while I was trying to enjoy my New York Strip Steak ($32). While it's understandable to expect bugs outside on a South Carolina evening, what we experienced was much more than that. When nightfall came and the outdoor seating lights were turned on, our dinner was abruptly interrupted. I had nearly finished my steak when a big, dead, furry moth fell onto my plate, spoiling my appetite for the remainder of my meal. Not to mention that I had barely been able to touch any of my potatoes before this occurred. As I was trying to remove the moth, my husband noticed that he was constantly having little, black bugs falling into his drink. Each time that he removed one, two more would fall into his drink. As I looked around, his entire plate was now covered with black specks of bugs, as was our tabletop. That's when we realized that it was more than just a few bugs flying around us. We looked up and noticed that the light fixture above us was completely filled with bugs and that these same bugs were raining down onto us. It looked as if that light fixture had not been cleaned out in some time as it was so full of bugs that they were overflowing from the top and raining down onto our table, food, clothes, and hair. The server eventually noticed that we were frantically rummaging through our hair to remove the bugs, so he brought us inside. He offered us bug spray as well as our check even though we had not consumed everything that we had ordered. Thankfully I was able to enjoy some of the steak, which I thought was incredibly juicy and tender, but I hate that I could not enjoy the rest of my meal. It's quite revolting to have dead bugs constantly dropping onto your meal. And I believe it is unfair to be asked to pay for the entire meal when it was cut short by circumstances that were completely out of our control. The server's remedy for the issue was not satisfactory. I was never offered another plate, of food or something to-go. My husband was never offered a new drink. We were never even offered the dessert menu! That table needs to be moved away from being situated directly under the light fixture, and that light fixture needs to be vacated of the thousands of dead insects as soon as possible. I hate that this situation ruined an otherwise pleasant meal.

Yelp
The views here are amazing and definitely worth visiting. Hostess and staff take every Covid precaution and are friendly about it. We ordered the recommended bagger burger and fish and chips. Both were good but nothing we would return for. Fish and chips was super small and simple. The crispy shrimp appetizer was very tasty. So good bar food but definitely not worth eating there. Visit the clubhouse, grab a drink and enjoy scenery. Bring beach walking shoes.
google avatar

Caroline R.

Yelp
Have been here several times. Our family loves the food, drinks and atmosphere. Service is always good too. This restaurant is better than the Atlantic Room which is more expensive and a more formal meal.

Amy K.

Yelp
The food was delicious, the service great and the view was priceless. A great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Yelp
Had lunch here twice while in town. Nothing beats the view at this location while sitting outside under the veranda. Menu is replete with a variety of surf and turf. Service was excellent every time we went. Can't wait to go back!

Megan Taylor W.

Yelp
Worth the long winding drive to the outer point of Kiawah Island. Beautiful glimpses of epic houses along the way. Stunning views across 18th green to ocean while we ate our lunch on porch. We had fried chicken Cobb salad & low country grilled cheese sandwich with side of Cole slaw. Perfect! Waited patiently for our table while sitting outside on porch overlooking putting green and ocean, while quietly sipping our drinks from bar. Heaven! Recommend dressing appropriately for a more upscale setting.

Yelp
I presume my review would've been a five-star if I was allowed to come here for a drink. But to our dismay, after paying over $630/person to play the oceans course...the Ryder cup bar was only open to Mother's Day customers. We only had access to the clubhouse bar which was sub par (pun unintended). Really disappointed.

Yelp

Yelp
The view is completely priceless! It's so relaxing. You can hear the sound of the crashing waves. You can see the golf course. It's incredible. Our server is so fun and entertaining. My husband and I split the huevos rancheros. The couple we were with got pancakes and the poached eggs. Everything was amazing including the delicious mimosas and bloody Mary's! The prices are a little high but it's completely warranted with the quality of the drinks and food.

Yelp
Stoping here for lunch on a storming Kiawah afternoon was much needed and a lovely experience! Located on the last hole of the golf course, the view was an amazing one. Watching golfers on the last green provided nice lunch entertainment. But, My favorite part of this lunch was being able to hear and se the ocean from my table. Aside from the atmosphere and view, the food was very delicious. They add a superior touch on typical "bar food" . The fries were large and crisp, some of the best I have ever tasted. The fish tacos were savory and topped with a very flavorful sauce. When it started to rain, our servers were quite ready and pulled our table back to make sure we were under the covering of the porch so our food wouldn't get wet. It added extra excitement to our lunch! I think this will be a typical lunch spot for us when we visit Kiawah.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Great spot to relax with spectacular views of one of the top public golf courses in the country and right on the coast. Craft cocktails were tasty and we enjoyed the chicken Cesar salad and the fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese.
google avatar

Elizabeth P.

Yelp
We loved this option for casual dining with kids in Kiawah. No reservations - we arrived right before 5 and had no wait (even with a large party). Drinks were excellent as was the food. We especially enjoyed the falafel burger, fried chicken Cobb and onion rings. A great option for kids because they can run around the putting green while waiting for food. We went twice during our stay!
google avatar

Mrs. M.

Yelp
The menu is expensive and tbh you don't go here for the food. Can be crowded at sunset but we have always been able to get a table relatively quickly by putting our name down. Best dishes: the jerk chicken wings are a large portion and well seasoned. The fish and chips are excellent. Salmon Cesar is nice as well. She crab soup tasty and flavorful. Everything else is pretty good, expect B+ bar food. Service is good.
google avatar

Melanie D.

Yelp
This place is all about the views and cocktails. The views and location do not disappoint, it is truly like a postcard. This is a popular spot for a casual dinner and drinks post golf at the Ocean club or for those enjoying the island. We had fish tacos with fries and the ground siracha shrimp burger with coleslaw. The shrimp burger was the hit. We also had crab dip and chips to start. No complaints, a solid place with good service and nice, casual food with a 5 star view of the Atlantic and the 18th hole.
google avatar

Chris A.

Yelp
To say that I do enjoy the drive out to the Ryder Cup Bar and just sitting on the porch to soak in the ambiance is an extreme understatement. I could sit there for hours...but I would probably go broke. The New York Strip was on point and cooked exactly how I wanted it and service is attentive but not overbearing. Always a great stop when on Kiawah.
google avatar

Rose P.

Yelp
A fun place to go. Seated on the spacious, colonial porches (where you can see the Ocean Course Golf Course and the Atlantic Ocean) is a really special experience. The guests are varied: golfers, families with young children, tourists and local alike. I always take my visitors to this bar/restaurant without fail. They serve large quantities of food, freshly made and served with care. The menu offers something for everyone. I have never had a bad meal here - even when the service is slow, it is worth the wait! Pricey, but well worth the drive to the far end of Kiawah Island.
google avatar

Joan M.

Yelp
Came to The Ryder Cup Bar at The Sanctuary at Kiawah yesterday for lunch. Got a pass and drive about six mile to this breathtaking bar at the edge of the world. It's a big spacious place with an Circle shaped bar and massive windows which allow you to view the golf course and ocean in one view. Just amazing. It was busy here and too chilly for me to sit outside even though many people were. We sat at the bar rather than wait 45 minutes for a table. They have a great menu & the plates coming out looked impressive. The servings here are on the large side. Thankfully we had no appetizer. I had a burger done perfectly and monster hand cut potato fries. We had some cocktails and chatted with the very busy bar tender who made plenty of time for us. We had so much fun. Don't miss out on this place. The view alone is worth the day trip. Priceless for sure.

Yelp
Loved these mini sliders and love the ocean front view and great service I love this place and will definitely be coming back!!!
