I would have given this place a great rating if it were not for a major turn of events during the entree portion of our meal.
Came here for dinner and ended up having to wait almost 1.5 hours to be seated. Somehow they were still accepting walk-ins up until 8pm despite the numerous groups already waiting in the lobby and outside. The outdoors area was beautiful with a nice view of the beach. Even though we were a party of only 2, we still had to wait for the larger parties to clear their seats. There did not appear to be any small tables that were meant for couples only.
Once we were seated, we quickly received our drinks, but it took awhile to get our main course orders placed. The Fried Green Tomatoes (with pimento cheese, tomato jam, and arugula, $15) were great and had a little kick to the pimento. The She Crab Soup ($17) was unbelievably creamy and flavorful. The ale battered cod in the Fish and Chips (with malt vinegar and pickled pepper tartar sauce, $28) was super soft, light, and fluffy on the inside and flaky on the outside.
However, the real trouble started while I was trying to enjoy my New York Strip Steak ($32). While it's understandable to expect bugs outside on a South Carolina evening, what we experienced was much more than that. When nightfall came and the outdoor seating lights were turned on, our dinner was abruptly interrupted. I had nearly finished my steak when a big, dead, furry moth fell onto my plate, spoiling my appetite for the remainder of my meal. Not to mention that I had barely been able to touch any of my potatoes before this occurred. As I was trying to remove the moth, my husband noticed that he was constantly having little, black bugs falling into his drink. Each time that he removed one, two more would fall into his drink. As I looked around, his entire plate was now covered with black specks of bugs, as was our tabletop. That's when we realized that it was more than just a few bugs flying around us. We looked up and noticed that the light fixture above us was completely filled with bugs and that these same bugs were raining down onto us. It looked as if that light fixture had not been cleaned out in some time as it was so full of bugs that they were overflowing from the top and raining down onto our table, food, clothes, and hair. The server eventually noticed that we were frantically rummaging through our hair to remove the bugs, so he brought us inside. He offered us bug spray as well as our check even though we had not consumed everything that we had ordered.
Thankfully I was able to enjoy some of the steak, which I thought was incredibly juicy and tender, but I hate that I could not enjoy the rest of my meal. It's quite revolting to have dead bugs constantly dropping onto your meal. And I believe it is unfair to be asked to pay for the entire meal when it was cut short by circumstances that were completely out of our control. The server's remedy for the issue was not satisfactory. I was never offered another plate, of food or something to-go. My husband was never offered a new drink. We were never even offered the dessert menu! That table needs to be moved away from being situated directly under the light fixture, and that light fixture needs to be vacated of the thousands of dead insects as soon as possible. I hate that this situation ruined an otherwise pleasant meal.
