The El Jefe Cantina is being... wait. What? Closed down and renovated...? Let me guess? Mid Century Modern but expensive reproduction with fake props like modern art coffee table books and vintage but not for use ashtrays and lamps to create that all pervasive and frankly sickening overuse of mid century modern redux design...like the newer bar restaurant El Jefe? Looks beauteous...like Design (not) Within Reach meets The new improved ACE Hotel Cocktail Bar right up the road? The Ace: young hip as well as older families and couples chasing a memory or otherwise well-heeled tourists who don't have memories and legit taste or knowledg to love what already is. They are learning... Palm Springs younger hip tourists? They don't know that the Ace diner was once a Denny's and before that the Howard Johnson's was the real deal former ACE...I was a kid there swimming in that pool and drinking HoJo's Shirley Temples with my dad ( he drank several nice single malt scotches...in the old old old cocktail bar...cool memory now long gone). That's Life, as Sinatra sang... An aside: The Ace was a cool place for a long time...ok that happens. Hotels evolve and change...Great hotels do not become a Disney ride for tourists. I have evolved and changed too...The best restaurants and bars and hotels stay true and pivot as necessary, but never alienate or even disappoint those original customers...the ones, like my dad who visited regularly...But the new owners and operators of The Saguaro are in fact The Line Hotel corporation from K-Town in LA ...that's a different review altogether and not that 100% wonderful either it turns out...I stayed there in LA last Xmas for 3 nights. I was not a satisfied customer then either. Why? I will tell you in a post I will surly write of Xmas '24 at The Line in Korea Town Los Angeles... Back to The Saguaro. Very cool hotel that had been there for all for many years...Hey Line Hotel Shot Callers: Please do not change the decor and the vibe of The El Jefe Cantina. I think you might one day thank me for the advice...Otherwise known by locals and return customers alike as: That small OG Hotel Cantina El Jefe at The Saguaro. Just clean it up a little and staff it properly and do not close up this gem to guests and scheduled events in that bitchen old and cozy bar. Let your customers enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner and nightcaps in there... Open it to the guests who booked here because of the original El Jefe. I did, and stated it with a big smile while checking in...The Cantina was/is darkened, there were stacks of guests' unclaimed suitcases being stored in the old bar. Water was available, but one was not really supposed to enter or in any way even tour the Cantina. I came here to relax for 10 days, kind of a long stay, sit by the pool, and especially drink great cocktail(s)and eat in that really neato Cantina tequila bar, and to hang out at the hotel in which I am booked, because I thought I could. Turns out Corporate has other ideas. ( I was told with a depreciating smile by night manager) "new and exciting ideas for The Saguaro!"....not so welcoming to this return customer...They closed the Cantina off to guests during all hours just because? The manager blocked the lobby entrance with nice chuncky old bar stools? They sure did do that... The street door is just locked. I can't just hang out at the sweet and absolutely way more legit of the two establishments on site? Sad. I really loved the day staff- so cool. Especially the new restaurant 's and bar day staff. Very kind and helpful...The night management of the Saguaro? Evasive, embarrassed, defensive, and blatantly ageist, sexist, and the worst? To me? They, the evening Manager in charge when I was blocked from entering the lobby entrance to the Cantina. They educated me that the"fun is now in the new recently "improved" other el jefe restaurant and bar and that will be fun, too, no? Then basically in so many many words, I was schooled by them and their polite, maybe embarrassed but dismissive young barkeep to just you know, embrace the "new" vibe. Then I tried. I bought, was not offered, a lovely skinny marg...and then...kinda snubbed. News: This hotel was the new vibe for me. I'm here to relax and enjoy all that this fine establishment has to offer- especially the sweet El Jefe...now it's El Jefe light for tourists and not locals or woman of an age just trying to find relevant legit long term accommodation and entertainment all in one place, and happy to pay more if offered something real not contrived to please. Sadly that is no longer The Saguaro Swim Club and more exact the El Jefe...the writing is on the wall. ( or the new #midcentmod...)Think I'll head to The Marriott or that little old place still keeping it real in Indio and embrace the new Palm Springs and Do it My Way thank you...Bye Bye El Jefe...my bad. I guess this mid century artifact is no longer Queen or King...just old and no longer relevant...
