The Salisbury Museum

Their Wessex gallery takes you back in time to the Stone Age. My favourite item is a jade axe head: perfectly formed, with a polished finish, yet about 6000 years old. In another part of the museum, learn about local spitfire manufacture during WW2. And there's loads more... Currently there is a small but excellent exhibition about Elizabeth Frink showing something of her life, a few pieces of smaller scale sculpture and her 2D art work. If the weather is good you can have coffee and cake on the front lawn with a excellent view of the cathedral. Well worth a visit, in fact worth several visits.

Excellent museum with soooooo many finds in the local area and a comprehensive look at the history of Salisbury. We had 75mins, but needed more. Only open till 4 in winter. Nice cafe, friendly staff. I reckon it'll take 2hrs or more to take time to look round. Wish I had more time.

Came here after the cathedral and was instantly blown away! The gift shop had some lovely souvenirs, and the lady running the front desk was so welcoming and friendly! Not only that, the ladies running the café were also friendly, with quick service, patience, politeness and were overall brilliant. The food tasted divine too, with the toasty with plenty of cheese and fresh coleslaw (best I've had in a while!) And the baguettes did not disappoint. If you're hungry I'd recommend here! The museum itself is just WONDERFUL! There's so many items, with thousands of years of history, from roman maisacs and stone age tools right up to the modern day, even some paintings by Turner himself! Theres even stories on conservation works for nature, like the reintroduced Great Bustard. All telling the story of Salisbury and its surrounding plains. I can't describe how brilliant this museum is, and how much history it holds. If you're visiting Salisbury, this museum WON'T disappoint! Plenty of art from very talented people too, was impressed with many different pieces. Everyone here makes the museum so special, and everyone deserves recognition for making this place so wonderful! I have nothing but praise, thank you for an amazing and incredible visit!

I came in late, about 45 minutes before closing, after hearing a rumor about a mummified hand being displayed here. The docent informed me that, sadly, there was no hand, but there were LOTS of skeletons and a mummified cat. I felt seen! This man has matched my freak. I was charged a minimal late entry fee (around £5). The staff here was wonderfully informative and I enjoyed tooling around the museum and asking questions as I saw fit. The museum has quite a diverse collection of artifacts as well as art. I think it houses the largest collection of Stonehenge artifacts, which was nice to see right after Stonehenge. It really completed my little tour of the area and I will probably come back. There's a cafe on site, closed while I was there, and a nice gift shop where I stocked up on postcards.

Fabulous collection of local artefacts. Anglo Saxon, Roman, Bronze and Iron ages. Some fascinating reconstituted burials with grave goods. All set in a lovely environmentally controlled building in the grounds of Salisbury Cathedral. Well worth a visit.

Excellent museum, very well laid out and informative. Child friendly with plenty to keep the young ones engaged. A great half day visit, a whole day if combined with the cathedral. Would highly recommend.

I recently went to Salisbury Museum to experience an exhibition of Trinity Bhoy Wharf Drawing Prize, which was incredible. I was immediately struck by the wonderful surroundings. Even though it was quite an overcast day, Salisbury Cathedral stood majestically close by in all its splendour. The building of the museum was also a delight to behold and very welcoming. Once inside, my main interest was all the magnificent drawings, which were numerous and varied. I spent quite some time closely examining all the wonderful artworks that were made on a broad range of substrates, I was completely blown away. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the facilities were clean and the café was bustling with activity. Coming from Harrow, it was quite a trek but so worth it as I not only learnt a great deal about art but really enjoyed exploring the museum.

The refurbished museum is really good. The displays are well presented and given a great history of Salisbury. The natural history section was a bit disappointing, but had some good fossils. The cafe was also disappointing, it cost £5.50 for a cheese scone, which to me is too expensive. You do have to pay to enter the museum, so it is best to go when there is an exhibition on that you want to see.

The Museum's collections span the history and archaeology of Salisbury and south Wiltshire, from prehistoric times to the present day. The Museum is Designated by the Arts Council as having archaeology collections of outstanding national importance. Salisbury Museum is accredited as a Quality Assured Visitor Attraction by VisitEngland. Collections span all historical eras and include art, costumes, glass & ceramics.

Interesting museum. They've got Christopher the Giant and Hobnob, some painting by Whistler and a 'Stonehenge gallery'. Bill Bryson said something to the effect of 'go there at once'. Well worth going to if you're in Salisbury for more than a couple of hours.
