The Salmon

Can’t go wrong in this restaurant. A must try when in Oslo! We came without reservations 1st they take you the their museum, as part of the restaurant experience. You will be able to understand how salmon life cycle is and how they farm them. New knowledge learned in this visit. Then once we were done, we were taken to our table. The menu design is absolutely cute, newspaper style, so cool! Too much general information and then the food and drinks menu in between. The food? Just outstanding! The quality of salmon is unbeatable! Of course because same company owns the salmon farm where they get their fish 😅 can’t beat that! The location is beautiful, overlooking the harbor 🫶 The staff were very nice and attentive! Food is priced well, quality is amazing! We enjoyed our dining here and would highly recommend to everyone who visits oslo! 😍

A wonderful experience you get to try all the different types of ways. Salmon can be prepared. My wife doesn’t like salmon, but they had Wolfe fish, which was absolutely wonderful. Enjoyed experience very much nice view of Oslo fjord. Nice shops and plenty of walking areas along shoreline towards Oslo center. Reservations recommended

Had a wonderful experience at The Salmon in Oslo! The food was absolutely delicious, fresh, and beautifully prepared. Every bite truly reflected the quality of the ingredients. The service was equally impressive—friendly, attentive, and very professional, making us feel welcome from start to finish. On top of that, the beautiful view made the whole experience even more special. A perfect place to enjoy great food while taking in the surroundings. Highly recommended, and I would definitely visit again!

The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere. We had a reservation, went there a little bit early and had a chance to explore the learning area. It’s like a mini museum and gives lots of interesting info about salmon. The food was amazing. We started with roe and oysters, and tried two different salmon options, grilled and smoked. Each and every one of them was very, very good. When it comes to prices, everything is expensive in Oslo. Here, you may pay 50-60 USD per person including the starters, the main dish and drinks. But I believe it’s worth it. You should definitely try. And don’t forget to make a reservation.

Totally overrated tourist trap. The only thing that truly stands out is the location and surroundings — they’re absolutely beautiful. Beyond that, everything else is very mediocre. Pricing is relative, but considering the quality and taste of the food, it’s overpriced. There was little to no skill involved in the preparation — it was mostly sashimi-style cuts or simple grilled salmon. The same person who guts the salmon also prepares the sashimi and sushi (including the aburi selections). There’s no real display of culinary technique. The grilled salmon is just that — grilled salmon. There’s nothing remarkable about it. I can understand why the place is rated so highly because the setting is superb, but aside from the location, the food itself is very average.

It offers you a beautiful Oslo experience with its experienced staff. This is definitely the place for a delicious, humorous, warm evening. Don't be surprised if you see fish in the mirror while washing your hands.

A truly delightful experience. Obviously salmon being a highlight on the menu, heroed in many different ways. But the craft of Sashimi and delicate balance of flavours was exquisite. I particularly enjoyed the subtle sweetness and tenderness of the wolffish. A fish that I had never before tried, nor can I relate it to anything else.

Had a lovely meal here. The grilled salmon was the star—cooked medium-rare with a perfect texture. Not too oily since it’s a fillet cut. I also really enjoyed the mushroom-flavored mashed potatoes. The greens were a little tough, but overall the flavors were great. Recommended

We had the salmon aburi, the grilled salmon and the salmon tartare. Everything was fantastic. we stopped in to grab a bite for lunch. I strongly recommend The salmon if you are visiting Oslo.

The Salmon was another seafood restaurant on our list of places to eat while in Oslo. It was located in Aker Brygge which was a newer and expensive neighborhood. There was both indoor and covered outdoor seating. We did not have a reservation but came early enough to snag an inside table. It was the right choice as the rain really started to come down about that time. One caveat was that we had to wrap up our meal within 1.5 hours which wasn't a problem for us. The menu was unique as it was printed inside a newspaper. One just had to flip pages to find the drink, food and dessert menus. Given the namesake of the restaurant we opted to try three different salmon preparations: Our favorite dish was the salmon tataki which was lightly grilled in a ponzu sauce. If it was larger then we would've gladly eaten this as a main dish. The grilled salmon came in second as it was perfectly cooked. The mashed potatoes were a great accompaniment, creamy with truffle flavors. Our least favorite was the hot smoked salmon and pasta salad. There was an unusual taste to the pasta salad that detracted from the salmon. Service was just ok and it took a long while before we could get any attention to close our check. While tipping wasn't expected in Norway, the Salmon's credit card terminals start with a tipping option screen before you can pay. Absolutely fantastic! When I was looking into restaurants in Oslo, this place was on the top of the list! The quality of Salmon in Norway is amazing! Definitely a must try experience! The Salmon does an excellent job of showcasing the fresh and wonderful quality of salmon in many different dishes. The tasting plate was one of the best dishes they had. There were three different pieces of salmon with different accompaniment. I don't remember the exact cuts, but one was Lox, and the other was a cold smoke. My guest got a ginger salmon salad she loved. We also got the torched salmon nigiri to taste. The hype is real! This is definitely a must try! They get extremely busy, so a reservation is a must! They had indoor and outdoor seating with a heated patio (it was a bit chilly when we were there).

There is a reason this place is so highly rated- it is delicious and fresh! My husband tried a bit of everything since we wanted to really experience the flavors of the salmon here. We started with the Salmon Trilogy which was fantastic. Each salmon had its own flavor. For dinner we split the grilled salmon and the Today's Catch which had sushi, sashimi and nigiri- to die for! Almost didn't need the ponzu or soy sauce. If you like salmon, come here. If you don't, there are very few other fish options, but this place will change your mind. P.S. there is a small food truck just outside in which they serve a smaller menu of the restaurant. That is an option and I believe you just walk up.

This is the best salmon I have had and it came with perfectly cooked mashed potatoes and broccolini. My husband had the three herring appetizer which had smoked, pickled and mustard herring on a soft and dense rye grain bread. He also had the creamed salmon soup and said both were excellent. The location is great for people watching and the salmon fishing and farming history room at the restaurant is very informative and a nice way to pass your time when waiting for a table.

The one thing my husband wanted to have everyday during our time in Norway was Salmon and this particular restaurant was at the top of his list. We stopped here for lunch after walking around in Aker Brygge. I got the grilled salmon and my husband got the salmon soup. Grilled salmon was fantastic and I honestly wasn't keen on the soup but after I tried the soup, I really enjoyed it! It was very fresh! Service here was swift. Enjoyed dining here, salmon was amazing!

Good Food. Weird Vibe. Bad Service. We booked a table here for Sunday night dinner. They have a strange system where you have to indicate whether you want the table for 1.5 or 2.0 hours, with the clear implication that you must leave after that. No lingering. It seems unnecessary on a Sunday night in January, especially since the restaurant wasn't at all busy. We booked 1.5 hours, but showed up 45 minutes early. Because our table was ready, they sat us right away, but we waited at least 10 minutes for someone to wait on us. We ordered drinks and, when they finally arrived, the woman who brought them insisted that we place our food order. When my husband said, "We'd like to enjoy our drinks for a few minutes first," the server got very angry with us because we "had the table for a limited time." She finally calmed down when we explained that we were early, but then she never came back to take our food order! Someone else took our food order, which included sushi and sashimi. Shortly thereafter, the first person dropped off plates, chopsticks, and two sauces. After waiting more than 20 minutes for our food, I finally asked the first server what the sauces were, but she refused to tell me! She said she wouldn't tell me until our food arrived. That's just strange - and rude. As it turns out, one was for the sashimi and the other for the sushi. I know the difference between sushi and sashimi, so she could have told me when I asked - and why be rude about it?! The worst that would happen was that she'd have to repeat herself. The food was good, but we waited a very long time between courses and were never quite sure who our server was because lots of different people waited on us - it didn't seem that we had a dedicated server, which just felt really disorganized. The vibe was really odd. For most of our dinner, we appeared to be the only ones over 35 years old - the rest were young tourists on their phones, not talking to each other - at every single table. I guess that is the restaurant's demographic. Maybe they were there for the WiFi, hence the time limit?? It wasn't at all the experience we were looking forward to and it wasn't like the warm, friendly service that we've experienced elsewhere in Norway.

We walked by this place as we checked out the Aker Brygge area. I love salmon and the prices seemed reasonable. We made reservations for dinner and were seated after a short wait. The service seems slow. When you walk in, you're greatd by a GIANT screen with footage of and facts about salmon. We started with the salmon sashimi, which was definitely very fresh and tasty. The presentation could be improved. It was just 6 slices of salmon stuck together with roe on top with ginger and wasabi. Yummy! We had the salmon soup, a light cream base with good amount of salmon, dill, and small pieces of (Idaho? Or some sort of brown potato), with a few pieces of corn and green onions. I probably wouldn't order this again. Also, we had the hot salmon entrée, on brocollini and garlic mashed potato (super delicious). The total was about $30 per person. This was one of the first places in Oslo we had been asked to tip. We didn't order any alcohol, dessert or other items. It was enough food for us. I want to give this place a 4.1. The ambiance is cold, modern, and sleek, and not like the Nordic feel of some places in Oslo. The service could be better - we had to call our server over to order our meals and again to get the check.

A great place for Salmon, just like the name implies!! We had a very good meal and enjoyed our surroundings there at The Salmon. The education side seems "out of order" as the info screens didn't work, but the food was great! We got the salmon sashimi because how can you not when in Norway?! And then we both got the pictured salmon dish that was prepared perfectly, and with great sides. I definitely recommend this place, but get a reservation for sure!

The food here is SO good, but the service is just so so bad. I understand people here don't need tips cause it's great they make livable wages, but the hostess had an attitude and our waitress just kept forgetting everything-water, check, silverware. We had to ask for these items repeatedly. I would understand if she was busy, but she was busy socializing with her coworkers and just happened to be laughing with them right in front of us. Hard to ignore that when she's been forgetting things the entire meal. She tried to laugh it off and say oops I forgot, but I couldn't help to tell her yeah you've been like that the entire meal. Aside from the terrible service, the food was great. I got the grilled salmon, crab and avocado roll and my hubby got the salmon sampler. Everything was so fresh and delicious. It's hard to say if I would recommend this place or not. I guess just have very low expectations and be prepared to flag down your waitress to ask for everything.

With a name like The Salmon, you best believe they know how to make their salmon. The grilled salmon was divine. So moist and so easy to break apart with a fork. After a long day of sight seeing, this is the perfect way to end the day. Loved trying the salmon trio appetizer with salmon smoked different ways. It was such a fun experience to compare and contrast smoking techniques and the end result on the fish. We showed up without a reservation before the dinner rush and they were able to seat us outside (indoors was all reserved). It could get a bit cold seated outside, but no fear they have blankets and heaters.

This place was fantastic! My niece booked a reservation via the website the day before for our party of 8 people. She had to use a credit card to secure the reservation, but it would only be charged if we didn't show up. The restaurant is located along the harbor front a short walk from the National Museum where we spent much of the day. There is outdoor and indoor seating, but due to a bit of rain, we sat inside. There are large ceiling to floor picture windows so there was plenty of light and we could watch the foot traffic go by once the rain subsided. The menu is actually a newspaper. The selections were varied, but included the namesake in the majority of the dishes. Most of my family went with the traditional salmon filet with asparagus. My sister opted for the fish and chips, and I ordered plates of sushi. I was lucky to sample them all, and I was quite pleased. You will love whatever you get here, but truly the filet was divine. After our meal, we went to a separate area of the restaurant where they had a short documentary movie about salmon in Norway. There were some interactive displays where you could learn more about the different aspects of farmed salmon and how important it is to the Norwegian economy. A guide also gave us a small presentation and answered our questions. Even if you don't plan on eating at the restaurant, it is worth stopping by to do this educational experience. The guide books recommend this place, and I wholeheartedly concur that this place is worthy of a visit.

If you would guess their focus was salmon you'd be right. Casual set up. Good service. Get a reservation as they were busy. Everything we had from sushi to seafood soup was excellent.

The cold smoked salmon and maki were very good. We also had sashimi and nigiri which were good as well. The smoked shrimps were disappointing.

Food was excellent, fresh and tasty. I had the sashi 16 piece mixed platter. Gives you a taste of the best options. I also tried the Salmon soup which was filling and super tasty.

Spent a week in Norway and this is the BEST spot we ate at, including multiple Michelin star restaurants. They have the whole experience, and the salmon curing in the window, which was very cool. Everything was delicious and tasted super fresh. Overall, delicious salmon will certainly be had at The Salmon!

Delicious simple meal. Had the scallop and the snow crab maki rolls and they were fresh and well prepared. The only thing is the scallop roll was not spicy but the salmon roe topping gave it a good texture. The museum attached to the restaurant was informative and a good way to pass a couple minutes while waiting for seating.

Since a lot of Salmon comes out of Norway and they were the reason salmon sushi got popular, one would think there are salmon-specialty restaurants galore in Oslo. Alas, we could not really find much and this was the closest we found to a spot that focuses on beloved salmon. The Salmon's menu items are indeed very delicious and we were very satisfied with the presentation to the taste. It obviously isn't an all-you-can-eat sushi where you can load up with salmon forever, but you can see and taste the high quality of their fish. I like how they have a little museum inside their spaces and it is worth a visit. After my meal, I strolled through their exhibits and ended up learning a lot about the tasty fish I love so much!

The service was very kind and very willing to let me take my time to make a decision and ask questions before ordering. I enjoyed the plate with a taste of cured, cold smoked, and hot smoked salmon. Salmon was perfectly soft and tender. The sauces were very good! They have gluten free bread if you ask! I would advise a reservation as they were fully booked in the middle of the afternoon!

Had the absolute best experience here while vacationing from the states. The staff, the ambiance, the food, the learning exhibit , it could not have been more pleasant. I mean even the bathrooms were cool (a digital fish swam across the mirror!). We ordered the Norwegian Salmon and Crunchy Salmon sushi roll. Both were delicious! We also very much enjoyed the exhibit in the front, where we learned about the Norwegian Salmon process. Literally cannot recommend this place enough!

Had a great sushi lunch here. My friend and I just completed a tour and we were walking by looking for lunch spots. Many places seemed packed with tourist but their menu was kinda basic. We kept walking and stumbled upon The Salmon. Luckily we arrived and were easily seated, but 15mins later it seemed they had reached capacity and there was a now a wait. I noted the chef behind the counter making a sushi roll and it looked good so I decided to get sushi. Thanks to yelp photos, I showed the waitstaff a photo of a sushi roll that she said was the Salmon Aburi. We both got that. Plus a glass of Rose. And we started with a set of Oysters as well. Everything was delicious. I was content without being overly stuffed, it was just lunch. But it was enough to carry us thru to dinner. They have some outdoor seating but I do recommend making reservations.

Highly recommend this restaurant - great location and very high quality fish. The service was quick as well. You can sit inside or outside but I recommend outside if the weather is nice.

Best salmon ever. Soooo fresh prepared multiple ways. Get one of the pre set menus. You will not be disappointed. You may want to book in advance.

Delicious and creative array of dishes made mostly from salmon. A party of 4 can sample almost the whole yummy menu. Servers were friendly. Don't forget to visit the restroom for one last salmon surprise!

Great location in the Aker Brygge. Great salmon and ambience. Best for lunch or afternoon snack. It is definitely a bit touristy and I think the high price tag reflects that, but it's worth a visit if you're in the area.

One of the highlight of our trip was to taste Norwegian salmon in Norway. Doing it at The Salmon was both fun and educational. It's a clever idea to put 3 different types of smoked Salmon in one dish for taste comparison. The grilled Salmon dish did not disappoint. The Aburi Salmon was as good as it gets.

Absolutely incredible. I had the salmon aburi maki and the Norwegian waffle (with salmon on top). I can't choose a favorite. I truly enjoyed each and everbite of both dishes. I had such a pleasant meal and would recommend this to everyone!

This can only be described as an epicurean salmon boutique. When your walking along the ocean yo look to the side and immediately notice the rotating smoke salmons in the window. Dive right in....

Poor service and bad management, service was terrible and staff was rude. Food served cold. Don't waste your time and money.

Best meal we have had so far... by far. The 20 piece sushi platter was amazing!!! My salmon, potato, and asparagus lunch was fabulous with the house white wine. We may come back tomorrow to try more things. Delicious place although expensive, but worth it.

Highly recommend!!! I rarely review on yelp but immediately while I was being seated I knew this place warranted a great review. The wait staff was extremely attentive but not overwhelming. Upon entering, the restaurant is to your right and there is an exhibition about Norway's salmon industry to the left where they even have an expert to educate people. The food was incredible, I had the Trilogy and would suggest everyone get it. Best salmon I have ever had.

While in Oslo for a one day stop on our cruise, we stopped here for our anniversary dinner. It was the the best grilled salmon I've ever had! They close at 6pm though, so come for lunch or early dinner. But COME!
