I quietly accomplished something I’ve been working toward for years, and when it came time to celebrate, I asked myself: How can I indulge without going too overboard?
Seafood, of course. And where better than a spot I’ve heard rave reviews about—even back when I lived across the country?
The Sandbar on Granville Island did not disappoint. In fact, from now on, it’s officially my celebration place for as long as I live in Vancouver.
The meal was absolutely fabulous, elevated even further by a live jazz performance—just a grand piano, a talented player/singer, and a perfect soundtrack to an unforgettable dinner.
I ordered prawns, a lobster tail, and scallops. I could have eaten 20 more plates—not because the portions were small (they weren’t), but because the food was that good. Truly the best seafood I’ve had outside my hometown on the North Atlantic coast. (And trust me, I still haven't found anything to beat cod cheeks and tongues.)
This is the first time I’ve ever given a 100 out of 10.
The service was just as impressive as the food. My server didn’t need to write anything down, knew the menu inside and out, and offered a wine pairing when the Gewürztraminer I wanted wasn’t available. I ended up with a white Riesling, and honestly? I’d choose it again. Perfect match.
Also, I won’t lie—he was easy on the eyes. Totally professional, though. Just a top-tier server. Those are hard to come by these days, even in a city overflowing with restaurants.
As someone who used to work in fine dining, I can be a little picky about service and presentation—but The Sandbar got everything right. The lobster was plated beautifully, cooked perfectly, and so delicious I forgot to even take a picture before digging in.
And the final surprise? The bill. I was expecting to pay somewhere between $150–200 before tip, but the total came to just around $100 CAD. Incredible value for such a high-caliber experience.
This was, without question, the best dining experience I’ve had in my five years in Vancouver. A Gastown favorite of mine has officially been dethroned.
If you love seafood—just go. You won’t regret it.
