We went from Halifax to Bermuda on BermudAir with free drinks, arrived in two hours. Our second time to Bermuda, but our first time staying at The Sandpiper Apartments. We were pleasantly surprised at the size and cleanliness of the one bedroom apartment we rented. The location was central to all we wanted to do. The apt was kept clean throughout our stay. They provided the dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper, garbage bags, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, towels, face cloths. Our bed linens were changed once during the week. They do not stock food items so they don't attract bugs. Never seen a bug, anywhere near the building! We brought our own spices and some food items as it is expensive there. We also made a small food and liquor order online with Marketplace at Shelly Bay and had our driver stop there from the airport for pick up. Anything else we picked up at the nearby gas station walking distance from the apartment. They have a bit of everything included a take-out, but no bus tickets. Hard to get bus tickets! Sandpiper sold us two tickets so we could go to Hamilton to the bus station for them. Some of the resorts sell them, like Pompano Beach, where we stayed the year before. The swimming pool was nice, but not heated. It was 30C when we arrived late Sept. but it cooled off after the two hurricanes came, Humberto and Ismelda. The island responded very quickly to restoring the island's outages and doing clean-up, very impressive. The establishment was great through it all. We lost power temporarily because their own back-up generator went down. They rented a generator to get power back up. They even asked us if we were nervous or afraid, that they could move us if so. We were fine, having seen hurricanes at home before. We managed to get back to the beaches after the storms, but stayed out of the existing surge. The Sandpiper is a building of 14 apartments on two levels, with studio and one bedroom mixed throughout. There is security as well. No big hills to go up or down! We asked to view a studio and noticed that it is quite compact but it still has what you need to cook. A couple could manage the space if trying to save a few $$. Because it's right along the main road it can be busy and you hear the vehicle noise, but it's not that bad. We were out a lot during the day, and had the TV on at night. We enjoyed our stay and we met some lovely people too. The Bermudians are a wonderful people and we felt fortunate to be in a safe place to holiday when so many other places are not. So if it costs more to have such a great spot, then so be it. We are retired professionals but we don't need fancy to enjoy ourselves. The staff at the Sandpiper were fantastic! Just go! Don't miss out.
