On the Grid : The School of Life

"The School of Life is known for providing an insight into the simple, everyday things that generally make life more enjoyable: lighthearted books on existential topics, colourful stationery, notebooks with quotes and advices etc. Their space is located a few minutes down from Russell Square, and is easily recognisable by its big yellow sign. The people are warm and lovely and make you feel at home. The events organised there are always extremely curious (and complimented by absolutely delicious bites). The guest speakers come from various backgrounds, usually having been in a position of mentorship which gave them the wisdom for which they have been invited. The crowd is ever so beautifully diverse: we met a philosophy student/biology teacher, a painter and an interior design tutor at a previous event. Check at their website for any upcoming events - it may sound like something unusual but you can be sure that is will be spark some interesting ideas." - IYA Studio

The atmosphere is nice, staff is friendly but the coffee just doesn’t taste very good. It’s a fine place to crash when you’re on your way and needed a quick bite and a coffee but I wouldn’t take a detour to come here.

Relaxed and inspiring space with smoothies, light bites, and a curated book selection. Great stop to reflect, recharge, and browse thoughtful reads while enjoying a healthy snack.

Participated in the course “Beïnvloeden, overtuigen en verleiden” and would not recommend it to anyone. Things that could be improved are: 1. The classroom Was too hot in the morning, too cold in the afternoon and chairs are very uncomfortable. Because of the sunlight it’s hard to read from the screen and the speakers were old so it was hard to listen to the videos since the sound was such low quality. 2. The theory / information All videos that were shown are at least 10 years old. Examples felt outdated and irrelevant. There were no practical tips & tricks included in the entire course. Aristotle’s theory on rhetoric is interesting but it’s also common knowledge to anyone in a commercial role or sector. 3. Listening vs. Talking I understand that you want people to participate in a training and be proactive but having to listen to the rest of the group more than to the teacher who’s expertise I’d like to learn from is quite tiring.

I’m a big fan of the school of life, their books and publications in general. However, I find this particular place lacking in few points, that makes my visits pleasant. First, the seating is quite uncomfortable and unpractical, especially for someone who come with a laptop to work. The bar seating has high chairs and a lower table, making it painful for the back. Also, the communal table is so low and it gets crowded. The other point is the food. I got the Lavender lemonade and it was horrible. It didn’t taste anything like lavender. It felts like sipping on sparkling sugary water. The lemon cake was dry and has little lemon flavor.

Great place for a coffee! Great selection of books and stuff produced by the School of Life. They do regular classes and workshops here on philosophy and life. Really cool spot! The main room is no laptops, but there is a workshop room where you can work away to your heart's content.

One of the coolest places in Amsterdam! Cozy space, lovely vibe, amazing staff, and oh that Hummus bowl, sooo tasty! Very convenient for all moods and you can actually have coffee, breakfast, brunch, buy cool card games or books, and work from, so all in one.

The atmosphere is great, the hummus bowl was also tasty. The drinks are quite mediocre for the price unfortunately (hot chocolate is Chocomel with a higher price slapped on it which is just disappointing.

This was the first place that I went to when I was in Amsterdam, and it quickly became my favourite spot. I used to go there daily for a good coffee, a good read, and when I needed some time with myself. I visited it after years, and it is the same lovely nook, where I could easily spend some good hours.

Yelp
Great class options, some are styled toward a younger crowd and some are meant for whomever decides to attend them. Their prices were something that you could actually consider, reward vs. cost wise.
