The Screen (Kyoto Prefecture, Japan) 21 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"In a hotel as small as Kyoto’s The Screen, what matters most is the attention to detail. It’s not simply the fact that it’s a hybrid style, somewhere between a traditional ryokan and a modern design boutique — though of course that certainly helps. In the end what makes it special is the sheer variety and richness of the experience; with thirteen rooms by thirteen different designers, it’s meant to provide a subtly different experience to each guest." - Tablet Hotels

The Screen Kyoto is a hidden gem! While it’s a little further from the subway than suggested on their website, the location still feels central enough to explore Kyoto. The hotel has a stylish, boutique vibe. We stayed in Room 402, which had everything we needed – a large walk-in wardrobe, a jacuzzi, a TV with Netflix and complimentary pyjamas. The bed was large and very comfortable. Breakfast was fabulous! My husband chose the Japanese breakfast while I went for the Western option. Both were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, with plenty of choice. The staff were unobtrusive but always helpful when needed. For example, when we were struggling with the air conditioning controls, we returned later to find a detailed English guide thoughtfully placed in our room. We were welcomed with a drink and chocolates, which added a special touch to our stay. The Screen Kyoto is comfortable and full of character – perfect for those looking for something a little different from the standard hotel experience. Highly recommended!

An unforgettable stay – exceptional service and hospitality We had an absolutely wonderful experience at The Screen in Kyoto. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly kind, professional, and attentive. The rooms are spacious, beautifully designed, and very comfortable – a true blend of modern luxury and Japanese elegance. The food was outstanding – fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. The location of the hotel is also perfect, close to many of Kyoto’s main attractions, yet peaceful enough for a relaxing stay. What truly made our stay special was the thoughtfulness of the staff. They went above and beyond to help me prepare a surprise for my wife’s birthday, including organizing lovely gifts. Their attentiveness and warm approach really touched us. One detail that really stood out was their integrity: I tried to leave a tip as a thank-you, but they politely refused, explaining that hospitality is their pleasure and not something they expect to be rewarded for. That level of sincerity is rare and deeply appreciated. I wholeheartedly recommend The Screen to anyone visiting Kyoto – it’s more than just a hotel, it’s a memorable experience.

Absolutely wonderful experience at The Screen. We stayed 5 nights and we were so happy we did. The room was huge, stunning and very well equipped. The team here are so devoted to making certain their guests are happy and we were. Very. They catered for Gluten Free with a fab breakfast and they helped us with taxis and questions. Seriously, stay here. It's amazing! As we left, the team came to wave us off and wrote a special goodbye message on our breakfast plate. Special touches.

We rented 2 rooms, both completely different. All rooms were designed by local artists, very eclectic. Rooms were clean, staff was friendly, and hotel is in a great location. Bus stop just a few minute walk and subway is about 10 minutes away.

This stay was for our anniversary celebration. The daytime front desk staff were very helpful during check-in. After checking in, we appreciated the small gesture from the hotel—a box of chocolates as a gift. Overall, we were 7/10 satisfied with our stay. However, the internet speed at night was extremely slow—so slow that it took nearly 30 minutes just to load and watch a single video. We called the front desk multiple times for assistance, but no one answered for a long time. In the end, we decided to use our own mobile data to relax and enjoy some entertainment.

weird experience here. staff were friendly but in a creepy way … the room was big but the beds were uncomfortable and we didn’t have proper blinds in our room that was facing a courtyard that was lit by the hotel … so it was bright at night. charged us with an “accommodation tax” at check out. won’t be staying here again.

The screen was a very relaxing space. The rooms are all individually designed so all very unique. I was so grateful to receive my request of the moon room. It didn’t disappoint. Staff are amazing.

Amazing spacious hotel room unlike the usual small little rooms in japan! Price is very reasonable and in a great neighbourhood! We enjoy the restaurants nearby and the hotel is excellent! We had a really nice welcome drink and chocolates and it really made the experience very memorable !

Yelp
I loved the modern, white space when I first entered the hotel. Unfortunately my room, gigantic though it was, leaned heavily form over function. Take lighting, for example. The room had just a few recessed lights in many square feet meaning that unless you you were right under one (which felt like a spotlight) you were pretty much in the dark. This was definitely not conducive to getting much work done! Or the spacious jetted bathtub. This was a highly exciting find until I stumbled upon the uneven tile work in the bathroom (ideal for stubbing one's toe) and nosed the drainage problem that leaves the area slightly smelly. Many of the cheap materials used in the room were beginning to show their age, particularly the scratches in the walls around the bed (yikes). The wifi (each room has its own) needed to be reset multiple times daily (unplug, replug) but was strong when it worked. In sum, the Screen is a fine boutique design hotel choice for a getaway but less so if you're there on business and actually need to get work done.

Yelp
Perfect quiet location in a residential area and just a few blocks from art galleries, antiques, coffee shops, and a park. AMAZINGLY large, clean rooms with tea and Japanese crackers. The bathroom was also insanely large with nice toiletries. The jacuzzi tub was large enough for 4 people, and I took the most amazing bubble baths there. Excellent service!
