I had a great overall experience at The Secret Group—it was my first karaoke night in Houston, and the venue really delivered. The club has a welcoming, alternative vibe that immediately stood out. There’s a strong sense of community among the patrons, and the atmosphere felt inclusive and fun. The bartender was fast, efficient, and incredibly friendly, even while managing a busy crowd. I also appreciated how helpful they were in answering my questions. The karaoke DJ was equally sweet and made the night enjoyable. However, I did want to share a concern about one staff member. A tall, slender man working the door was smoking a joint outside, which made me assume he was just another guest. I was caught off guard when he suddenly stopped me to ask for my ID in a loud and off-putting manner, standing uncomfortably close. The interaction felt inappropriate and left me feeling uneasy. Throughout the night, even though I remained inside, he continued approaching me to talk about his comedy routine, which felt intrusive and unwanted. Despite that, I had a successful first night out in Houston thanks to the welcoming energy of the space and the great staff inside. I’d love to return—and hope that in the future, interactions at the door can feel a bit more professional and respectful.

The secret group is a comedy spot/music venue/bar in the midtown/downtown area. It’s nestled ima really interesting part of the city and really adds to the mystique and art style Houston should be famous for. The Bar and comedy venue is directly through the front doors, in the back closed off by a wall is the music venue, which is why I came to The Secret Group this night with my wife. We went to see an excellent OKC No Wave/Metal/outsider art four-piece project. The soundboard/mixing was excellent which made the band sound crisp and organic. The stage isn’t super high so the band feels more on your level, which I always enjoy more. The venue is standing room only, you’d want that at a show like this. No one wants to get kicked in the head, or knocked out of your chair by the wayward circle pit thrasher. There is a bar in both rooms which offer reasonably priced drinks:mixed, juice, white claws, and beer tap or otherwise foreign or domestic. As well as a smoking area on the roof that overlooks the city and the highway. All in all a great place to see a show or a band, I’d recommend it!

Had a pretty good experience at this place! The layout is pretty cool, the staff is friendly, the restrooms are not a mess, and there’s a few spots with cold water in case you’re about to die of exhaustion. My main criticism is with the second room where the stage is. The AC could be better. It’s relatively small so there’s a ton of people crammed in there and it gets so hot that even the air is hot. There’s a lot of heavy bands that play there so I know it’s not a rare thing for that place to get super hot. My other complaint isn’t much of a complaint, just, get some newer security cameras guys. Like newer models of Wyze cameras haha. They’re like 40 bucks and much better.

Google
Parking across the street was 24$ for one hour or $48 for all day. It was almost $50 for the show with unknown "comedians" that weren't funny and they will not offer a refund!! It was nothing as expected and the pictures and reviews were VERY deceiving. It was small, maybe 15 people, and very uncomfortable. We ended up leaving shortly after it began. Waste of time, money, and gas. Would not recommend to anyone!!

Google
"The Box" is a smaller part of this venu that has to be accessed through a door further back. The room had about 40 seats and had a bar. Comedy was mid to decent. Going to try the drinks next time

Monday shows are good. The facility itself is nice and cool place to chill and have a drink.

Google
Great little venue for concerts and comedy show shows. I’ve seen lots of great acts come through and it’s never crazy expensive. Thanks for being out here in the East End guys.

Went there and was very not satisfied with building. The restroom had no soaps or drying towels… Waited 20 minutes for a sprite cola, while bartender was doing alcohol with customers… . Would never return to this building… called Texas alcohol early morning to make complaint… we should see if they will be responding to me…

Yelp
I went there about two weeks ago to watch a comedy show. We were just few people despite that the previous show was packed. I had hard time finding parking and frustrated to begin with. I think I paid 22 dollars for a dinner and I negotiated leaving my car at the restaurant parking lot while I was at the show. But it annoyed me that I was forced to eat a late dinner just to have a parking. So I went to the show already frustrated by a bunch of other stuff. The comedians were probably not very ambitious either for we were barely covering 1/3 of the seats. They asked every couple where they met and I was not that curious. I did not find it funny either. It was clear that this first comedian is just trying to pass the time. The second one came on the scene and the first thing he said was "Is it true that you met on facebook?" At that point I left. I asked for reimbursement of my 16 dollars and I have to confess that I probably took my frustration from my day on them. There was a confusion with the reimbursement. It showed as two charges on my bank account. So I called them and yelled at them one more time. They were patient and good to me over all. Five days later it cleared up. So they were right and fair to me. I was looking for my negative feedback to cancel it but could not find it. So I am leaving this one to mitigate the damage I have done to the group. Because they were fair to me.

Yelp
A friend and I went to the Thursday night comedy show in hopes of doing something fun and different and that's exactly what we got. There is a side entrance to the comedy show area that's separate from the concert venue and it's much smaller inside. Once inside, there is a bar setup right at the front and then there are three rows of 8-12 fold up chairs set out facing the stage. Comedians came on stage and did 5-10 minute sets and they were all so different and funny. The staff that was there was very friendly too. While this place isn't elegant by any means and is a bit more grungy... it was fun and I will absolutely be back!

Yelp
The Secret Group is a venue that hosts local comedy shows as well as live music, theme nights, and other events. It's located in the heart of EaDo. You can park on the street, or the well lit paid parking lot directly across the street from the venue. I attended Vivian Tu's (@your.richbff) "Rich AF" book tour. The vibe reminded me of the original Emo's in Austin. It's grungy and divey and is reminiscent of past venues in EaDo before it became gentrified (anyone remember the Meridian?!). The line to get in was long and moved extremely slow (which was unfortunate because it was very cold that night). The venue has multiple rooms. The room where we were in was packed with chairs and it was hard to move around to get to the bar. It was nearly impossible to pass by people at the bar without rubbing up against them. Needless to say, it wasn't very comfortable. The only saving grace is that the drinks were strong and cheap so I was able to look past the discomfort of not having personal space at the bar. They have a bar in the main lobby area as well as bars in each of the rooms. The snarky neon signs in the lobby are pretty funny. This place is no frills, but I appreciate their effort to support local artists and comedians.

Yelp
I've only been there for comedy shows, which are only about $15 pre-pay. They are *very intimate* shows, sometimes with only three or four rows. So be prepared to be called out! There is a full bar in the comedy room and access to the restroom. I do wish they would start making a pre-show announcement about 1) powering off phones and 2) no heckling or engaging with the comedians... This isn't audience participation. And I think the intimate settings makes people think that. The front of The Secret Group is a dance club with '80s, '90s, and 2000s music, along with karaoke and other events. Check out their website or marquee outside to keep with their happenings.

Yelp
First time visiting here and was not sure what to expect. We were there for a 90's music dance night and at first the place seemed kind of unassuming because the bar area seemed kind of small and really packed with people dancing to overplayed radio hits of the 90's (I lived through the 90's and honestly preferred 80's music) and since it was so crowded, I couldn't even order anything and while I was walking around, I found a double door and went through and saw there was a completely different group watching a live hardcore punk and their bar was actually reachable so I got my drink there. Also, the bathroom in that side was much much nicer than the bathroom at the front bar side. Later, I figured out what was going on. This is an interesting venue that has comedy shows, concerts, and themed DJ nights on the front bar area. I believe there is the big room, little room, and the front bar so they can have multiple shows on the same night even. For the band and comedy show, you need to order your tickets online and it seems to be all age shows so you get a wrist band if you're over 21 and such. I guess we got there so late that the concert was already over so they weren't checking tickets at the double doors and that's how I got to the other room. The place kind of reminds me of the 90's version of Fitzgerald's but somehow even more chaotic. It's really hard to move around and order drinks so perhaps something can be done about that but honestly, even though I was among the oldest people there, it was a nice place. I much prefer chaos over the pretentious clubs with the bottle service and the velvet rope. It's a nice fit for EADO.

Yelp
I perform here several times a month. The comedy scene is my social life. Boring, but true. Many don't know this but there is comedy at Secret pretty much every day. The bartenders are amazing and it's always good times,

Yelp
Definitely not what I expected but one of the more interesting small music venues I've seen. Came here to see a few bands (pacmanthemovie, local act plus red handed denial and unprocessed, good folks) and it was the smallest stage and room I remember, maybe few hundred capacity but honestly that was nice! Mix here was decent, acoustics good enough and staff helpful, good assortment of drinks and a couple bars across this whole space. Keep in mind, it seems like there are three spaces (bar, venue, and open mic area (?)) in this venue, you can hear the band and the act in the other room in the hallways to restrooms so that was cool. Bar seems to open up for DJ nights later, when we left the show around 11am it was packed on bar side. Never been to Houston before and this space and area in general were quite excellent, wouldn't mind stopping thru again.

Yelp
First time at the secret group for K-pop night and what can I say besides it was awesome the environment was lively the crowed was amp'd up the bar wasn't insanely busy so drinks were made surprisingly fast. The bartender looked like he wasn't having a good time but he was quick and efficient at his job so I can't complain. The venue was clean the speakers sounded perfect and it was a really enjoyable night and amazing experience.

Yelp
I'm not sure why the security guard at the door decided to harass a boring, middle-aged woman at the early show on a Friday, but I've had friendlier security inspections while flying through the middle east with a ticket marked security concern because of an airline clerical error. I mean, I'm physically a KAREN -- over 50, still wearing ankle socks and off the shoulder tops because that's the only part of me not experiencing menopause body-changes. He kind of ruined the show for me. I couldn't shake the feeling of being embarrassed and harassed. Not that it matters a rat's ass to him or anyone else, but I won't go back.

Yelp
Nice bar with music & karaoke with separate room for stand up comedy & shows. Had a great time!
google avatar

Cheryl G.

Yelp
The staff is great and extremely friendly! The gentleman working the door was so nice to warn me every time to watch my step as walked out the door. The bartenders were extremely friendly as well and offered great service. I thought that was very kind of him! It's a pretty small bar/club with a rooftop balcony. We went for a comedy show and midway into the show we decided to go to the upstairs balcony and ended up staying up there and people watched. The venue is on the smaller side so they only had a bunch of which seemed of rental chairs lined up close together. Unless you are sitting in the back or end it would be a challenge to get to the restroom or bar.

Yelp
I came here to see Transviolet. I loved the venue because of the small size so wherever you choose to stand to watch the show, it's always a good view. I did, however, choose to stand up front by the stage. Getting into the venue was easy - the dude who worked the door was super chill, friendly, and just gave out an overall good vibe. The bartender who was working was also super cool and friendly. I haven't been here for a comedy show yet, but I definitely wouldn't mind coming here and check it out some time in the future. Also, if one of the bands I follow come into town to perform here, I'd definitely come check them out.

Yelp
I came with a group of people for the Juneteenth show. I didn't realize there were 2 separate areas. For smaller shows like the Juneteenth one, you have to go through a door a few feet away from the front entrance. The sign over the door says "The Box". I can appreciate the intimate, lowkey, local feel. Not all of the comics were funny, but that's to be expected. I thought about 3/5 were good so that's a win! I also appreciated they had a woman comic in the lineup. I didn't get a drink, but the bar appeared to be well stocked. $10 ticket for a couple laughs? Yep, I'll be back.

Yelp
It's a unique small intimate setting but it was a very positive experience. Everyone there was cool and diverse.

Yelp
Had a great time here. good atmosphere good drinks It's a whole in the wall so don't expect much but you can have a great time

Yelp
BE CAUTIOUS! Me and my friend went for a comedy show, we each ordered a tequila shot and a gin and tonic. Neither of us can remember finishing the drink or anything else until the next morning. The following day we were both dizzy, shaking, and throwing up. A review from 4 weeks ago shared a similar occurrence. Thankful to have made it home, ladies be very careful!
google avatar

Jeremy T.

Yelp
I visited here on a rainy weeknight for a comedy show. We arrived a bit early so we ran to a nearby bar, then came back. We still had to wait a little bit for a recording to finish in the back room which is also where the comedy show was being held. They also have karaoke in the main room where the bar is located. I still ended up ordering a drink here which was reasonably priced. Overall. The comedy show was really good, even if it was just amateurs. Its a good mix, Some were not so good. Some average. Some really good.
google avatar

Andrea C.

Yelp
Great theme nights but DEFINITELY needs to figure out their AC situation. It's always incredibly hot & without any relief even in the bathrooms. You walk in and suddenly it's steamy, such great a great DJ & music for 90's night & kpop night but it's ridiculous having to walk out drenched within the hour.

Javier V.

Yelp
Their Latin show was super funny about the Latin culture, but ZERO in Spanish. However, the second show in English, you must be more quite, and you can't laugh TOO MUCH because they will think you are too loud and will ask you to leave for simply laughing too loud at a "comedy show". LMAO
google avatar

Madison R.

Yelp
Drinks priced well for a music venue. The concert room was unbearably hot, and the mixed drinks were ok at best. Definitely a middle of the road experience.
google avatar

Lanre M.

Yelp
This is a Houston, TX gem. Comics from across the country and local. They have some hit-and-miss comedians but mostly hits. They have a bar and good vibes all around. Give this establishment a shot. I've been multiple times, and I won't lead you astray

cody w.

Yelp
I mostly come here to sit in the photo booth and take miniature photos of time slowly aging me to add to my collage and then on nights when they have karaoke I sing all the greatest hits of Lionel Richie BUT they also have amazing comedy, great concerts, and there's a bartender there that looks like Hercules. One time I saw him crush a keg like it was a soda can it was INSANE. 5 stars.
google avatar

Angela P.

Yelp
I brought my niece here because she wanted to dance and she loves 90's music. The staff was great, we loved seeing them enjoy themselves. Drinks were good as well

Michael C.

Yelp
There is only a few people that actually work there... Restrooms have not been cleaned in at least 3 months.. sewage problems. Owners don't seem to care.. great place for comedy sometimes.

Yelp
We were looking for something fun to do at night in Houston and we found out that this place has $2 Comedy Night on Wednesday! There was a show for $25 and a free stand up comedy that we attended. It was fun!

Yelp
Love this place! Always a good time and good music playing. #90's night is always my fav night to stop by.

Yelp
I. Had. A. Great. Time! We went to the comedy show first called "too soon" and the comedians joked about current events, politics and pop culture. It was a packed house, this was my first time attending something like this. The person I was with said that it was his first time seeing it that packed! It was not a dull show at all, all the comedians had their different style of comedy which I appreciated. I definitely would go back to the comedy showcase and I'm all about supporting local talent!! I've been to the Improv but this is slightly differently. There's no food available but a bar for you to grab drinks. After the showcase, we went next door and partied to all the old school jams. It was such a good time and fun night. I liked how Convenient it was that the comedy showcase was next door to the club like atmosphere. Great place for a good, fun night out!

Malena J.

Yelp
Cool setting for a comedy club. Definitely has a whole in the wall kind of vibe. Bartender was great & fit the place perfectly.

Mark L.

Yelp
I am a very shy and introverted person. All I did was smile and laugh during their show. AND host came and asked me to be quieter or I would be asked to leave. Out of all the people there I was super quite, but she was rude and not willing to listen. I will not recommend this place and will never go again. If you are a comedian and can't handle people laughing at you, then. DON'T be a comedian.
google avatar

Lindsey P.

Yelp
Came to see a show tonight and spent the last 45 minutes trying to find our prepaid tickets in our email. George at the main venue did not help in any way and kept insisting that we find the tickets. He never asked us what show we were attending. He also insisted that there was no way to confirm our prepaid purchase of 10 tickets. Finally I said we'd pay for our admission again at which point we were told the stand up we were here to see is next door at the Box! To add further insult we were not allowed to take the drinks we just purchased with us!!!! We left the drinks behind and made a mad dash to The Box. Zach was a doll and helped our party of 10 get in and settled In under 5 min. Now waiting for the show to start..,,,

Stephanie R.

Yelp
This place has such a fun atmosphere! The Dj that does 90's /00's and K-pop night always does a great job with the music and kills it every time! However, the AC..... There is NONE. It's very overwhelming and uncomfortable being in a space where all you want to do is dance but you feel like your in a sauna. & I wish I could so say oh it's because it's packed with people , but.... Even when there is no one at the start of the night it is still so hot. In conclusion, the air conditioning is non-existent. It's summer in Texas , we should not feel like this when the sun isn't even out. I'm writing this review to keep y'all aware because I would hate it if something happened to an individual there because of it and threatens their physical health and gets addressed as a safety hazard on your establishment.
google avatar

Cam C.

Yelp
This is strictly based on the HARRY POTTER roast that they hosted here Literally one of the best performances I've ever seen because... 1) I'm a harry potter fan and 2) I am someone who has been drinking all day Everyone was friendly and my cheeks hurt afterwards because I couldn't stop laughing THEY HAVE ALCOHOLIC BUTTERBEER
google avatar

Louis T.

Yelp
Great mix of people, good drinks, and a LOT OF FUN! This is a nice place to take your date out if you want to laugh and talk about the performance all night long ;)
google avatar

Yelp
I'm so disappointed that you overbooked Barry Laminack's album recording after months of negotiating with him. Barry's community has purchased tickets and invited family and friends to the September 17th event. He has been looking forward to recording an album for over 4 years. Just very, very disappointed in your decision. Who do we contact to refund our ticket purchases?

Maggie M.

Yelp
This is such a fun place! Great comedy shows. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a fun show.

Yelp
The Secret Group is a bar, a comedy club, and a dance venue on days when there's no comedians in town. I also come here for various shows that uses this place to host their show because of the setup for the video, audio, and a stage with the capacity to accompany 50+ people. There's also an upstairs patio that gets used as a stage sometimes but it's mostly used for a smoking area and hang out place since you get a decent view of downtown and east downtown. I have seen the transformation for the main stage room from a comedy show to a dance party and it's pretty interesting how a bit of lighting, some black cloth to drape around the wall, and the good sound system can do to make the dance party like a cool place to be. The main bar has a few beers on tap and a set menu with interesting drinks and shots. The price is fair for east downtown price and the service can be a hit or miss. There's also a Pac-Man arcade for you to play, a jukebox, and a photo booth to make some memories in. Although it's a definitely a comedy club first, but it's open 7 days a week and it could be a great place to grab a drink or two. If you know of this place, now is the time to come in and check it out because I feel like The Secret Group has found the right median for the drinks, price, and things to do that makes them stand out and for people to have a great time.

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
First time going here and it was absolutely hilarious. The place smelled like a sewer but otherwise a pleasant experience ha. Very intimate cool vibe plus there's a bar. Smell is only reason it's not 5 stars

Yelp
Last time I was at The Secret Group I had a BLAST! It was 90's night and the music was off the chain...the DJ actually played my request! I will definitely be back and I WILL be inviting friends...* *Full disclosure-I'm one of the comics who actually performs there. That being said, I've done shows in 35 states and the Secret Group is one of my favorite venues to perform in. Because I do standup in alot of bars and casinos, I rarely go out when I'm in Houston , but when I do, Secret Group tops my list. Put then on your to do list-you will NOT be disappointed...
google avatar

Jason I.

Yelp
I love standup comedy and the price is right. This is the only place I know in Houston for real stand up anymore.

Josiah S.

Yelp
My friends and I are regular attendees of comedy festivals so we decided to check out the Come And Take It festival at The Secret Group. The venue is fine, not really set up well for big comedy events, but it wasn't the worst part of the experience. What ruined the whole weekend for us was the comedians. We sat through 50+ comedy sets and only got to see maybe 3 genuinely funny comedians. There were some "comedians" that took the stage that legitimately seemed like they had never done comedy before. If this was some local amateur show I feel like we would have been more forgiving, but this was billed as a big comedy festival and the passes were priced wayyyy above the talent level that was showcased. Will avoid any events held at this venue in the future.

Omoseh E.

Yelp
This was the worst stand-up comedy show I've ever been to first of all it's a little hole in the wall drinks are terrible! I decided to take my brother that came to visit just to do something different and the comedian there I wish I knew his name could not work a crowd, so me and my brother are standing at the bar and the comedian tries to make a joke about us. I'm not even sure what his issue was, but he kept coming back to me and my brother as a topic and the crowd literally had no idea what he was talking about trying to say that me, and my brother were incest, and it was just the weirdest distasteful confusing night I've ever experienced it was like the comedian was literally picking on us and we didn't say a thing we were just standing at the bar quiet listening to the rude remarks. And Ofcorse I understand u make a joke about the audience but this guy came on stage to literally bully someone and call it comedy. It got so bad I think management just wanted us out just so the guy can find something else to talk about so we got kicked out and I asked why? And all they had to say was. "You just have to go im sorry" I was just in shock like did this really just happen? NEVER WILL I GO BACK OR RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!! TERRIBLE COMICS !!! WILL PICK ON YOU BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO MATERIAL!!! DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ! GO SOMEWHERE WITH CLASS AND ACTUAL MATERIAL. NOT RACIST BULLIES!

Yelp
I came for the $2 bill comedy show they hold on Wednesday's. The venue was small but nice and it only costs $2. Don't make the mistake I did and buy tickets online for an extra $3 fee. Just show up and pay the bar tender. They also had $2 tecate and free chips and salsa on the table. Great place for a cheap date night! My only complain is the quality of the comedians last night. I can't really fault the venue for this but only 1/3 of the comedians were funny at all. The host was very good though both with his comedy and keeping the show moving along. For $2 I can't really complain and had a lot of fun.
google avatar

Nancy C.

Yelp
Cool place! They have a schedule for comedy, poetry, music, DJ etc. We wanted to check it out. Well I did and dragged all the girlfriends who don't like leaving the south side. We had the place to ourselves on a Thursday night. Great news for me, I could stand anywhere I wanted to get a selfie without any photo bombers!. I had a friend who's boyfriend did stand up here. I hope I get invited to the next show. The drinks are the best. I would have had way more than my limit if we had stayed any longer. Moscow Mule and McKenzie's Black Cherry Cider were so tasty. There's a few tables on their second floor outdoor patio. The view is nice and you can have conversations with the cars who make their stop at the corner. REAL FUN!

Shelby A.

Yelp
Our first time at Secret Group for a concert. It was terrible. Start times were not as posted. Which happens... no biggie. However, the show was in the middle room which was packed and hot as Hades. No, not just there were a lot of people in the room hot. There was no A/C on period. After 2 hours of waiting for the headliner to come on we couldn't even enjoy watching because the band was suffering from the heat. We tapped out... it was just too hot and crowded. We exited through the "club" and were shocked that the A/C was blasting in that room. What in the world?! Never again. I'm making a long story short... worst concert experience to date.

Linda N.

Yelp
I like going here for a good laugh. They mainly have local performers which are good. I once saw Atsuko Okatsuka perform and she was my favorite guest comedian! Whenever my friends from out of town come to visit, I would bring them to this place.

Yelp
I went to this place on 4th of July and had a blast. I had no idea there was a place like this in Houston. The comedians were hilarious, the drinks were cheap (with great pours), and aftereard they played music and the DJ actually took requests. Highly recommend checking this place out, I'll be back.

Krystelle P.

Yelp
This place was amazing. It was not on our "place to checkout" list but the universe had other plans. I'm glad it did because it ended up being a really great night. Drinks was great(espresso martini was delicious), it was comedy improv night so I laughed a lot. I thank the universe for a surprising great, fun and funny night all thanks to this venue. Loved it, ,will go back, try it.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite place to get "back in the day" with. Saturday nights is 90s and early 2000s dance party and is always a blast! I have invited many friends here and they have never left disappointed. You see all types and everyone has a big smile on their faces. My kind of spot indeed.

Yelp
Love love love this place. Its a great place to watch up and coming comics try out material and if you feel you can do any better you can also get up and try. They also serve liquor and have a ping pong table to enjoy. I went alone and felt right at home with no issues. I will definitely be back.
