The Shelter Cove Oceanfront Inn

We had a really wonderful stay here. We booked a studio with an ocean view, and it was perfect—spacious, with a balcony overlooking the water, a fully equipped kitchen, and free coffee. The room was clean, and the service was very friendly with fast responses. Shelter Cove is an amazing place to enjoy nature, and we absolutely loved our time there

We stayed in a 1-bedroom apartment with a huge terrace and a breathtaking ocean view. The road to get here is long but very scenic, even passing through redwoods. The location is secluded, yet the service is excellent and very friendly, and the hotel provides internet access. On the first floor, there’s a popular café, plus a few restaurants nearby. For EV drivers, there’s a Tesla destination charger with 4 stalls — I can honestly say I’ve never charged my car with such an incredible view before. There is also a local store, though you’ll need to drive to get there. As for activities, we enjoyed walking along the beach near the lighthouse. The Black Sands Beach is especially beautiful and long, but be prepared to cross a small creek to reach it. The bathroom is a bit small and could use some updating, but overall, this place is absolutely stunning. It’s perfect for a few days of solitude and recharge by the ocean. We would definitely return — highly recommended!

Great location first and foremost. You can't get any closer to the ocean. We had the bottom room and it was very spacious. Incredible tub spa. The space heater didn't work, thankfully it wasn't that cold. My biggest complaint was the lack of window covering/shade/curtains. The bed was facing east with lots of windows and it got bright way too early. Also we paid $20 per person extra for breakfast, but there was no such offering. Staff wasn't on site and they took their sweet time refunding the amount.

This is one of the few truly affordable oceanfront options left on this coastline. The fairly lengthy detour off of the traditional 101 route is worth doing for this unique corner of California. The room is simple, clean and uncluttered and the little balcony perfect for the roar of the ocean and the sounds of the coast. Coffee and a pastry downstairs in the cafe was perfect—just wish it were open for drinks and appetizers too. Perfect for a romantic stop on the way up to Eureka

The facility location is incredible - oceanfront with beautiful views from the sliding glass door that opens to a balcony. There was no screen on the door, so we were invaded by many flies constantly. The only way to contact staff for help was by text or phone. There was no resolution to this problem other than to have a rusted screen with holes placed that would not move. It had to be left open for air and to use the balcony so flies continued. The room has no A/C or heating so opening for fresh air was needed. Furniture was very old, covers were on cracked leather chairs, the mattress was so old it felt disgusting and unclean. The table wobbled, and there was not a clock in the room. Some electrical outlets were not working. Safety issues included a missing smoke detector with only the holder present, no security lock for the door, no phone in the room and cell service / WIFI were not reliable. You must be able to climb stairs and carry your own luggage up and down as there is no elevator or staff help . There is not an ice maker onsite either. To end this review on a more positive note - The Surf Point Coffee House which is downstairs but not in business with the hotel is fantastic with great food and friendly staff.

The location is beautiful, but of course very remote. Plan ahead for necessities! We had a gorgeous view, couldn’t ask for better. The on-site cafe is AMAZING, both food and coffee was excellent. As far as cons the bed was not super comfortable, but I have experienced worse. Also, we were in room 2 and on the second night half the outlets in the unit blew out. This is a problem as it is only around 50 degrees and the unit is heated by space heaters. We waited for the office to open in the morning and yet no one was present on site. We attempted to call and had to leave a message. Finally my husband found the kind woman cleaning and she was able to get ahold of the owner to find the flipped breaker. The sliding glass door which is right outside the back door of the cafe (accessible to anyone) had only half the blinds covering it so anyone could look in. There was never anyone in the office. We could hear other units walking, talking and even snoring through the walls. I think if we visit again we would probably check out a different inn.

Arrived at Hotel and it’s a self check-inn so that means nobody is there to help. After an hour of trying to get WiFi we called a number on an office door and left message and texted as that means no TV. (No immediate response) Finally a nice lady returned my call and tried to fix the problem. Said they got a new booster installed two weeks ago so obviously this isn’t the first time. Tried to sign into coffee shop below our room but it was the wrong password. Only option was to move into another room so we went and checked them out. Of course our original room didn’t come close to the ones available. One had no view and the other two had two beds so we picked the less dated. When opening the patio door there was a strong odor of pet urine and two dried up dog diarrhea on patio. We are not complainers so I jumped in the car and picked up a bottle of disinfectant at campground store. My husband scrapped up the dog poop and we washed patio off. Now I wouldn’t leave this if she would have discounted my bill as I originally paid for a nicer room with amazing views. I never received any checkout receipt and I messaged that I wanted one. Someone needs to be on the grounds full time to take care of paying $300 a night. As we left another person was trying to contact someone over an issue and I said good luck.

We stayed in the Captain’s Quarters and really enjoyed our stay. The location is unbeatable, it’s right on the cliff edge overlooking the ocean. It’s great for a longer stay because it has a full kitchen, a separate bedroom, living area and a full bathroom. We have stayed here a couple of times over the last 20 years or so and will be back.
