15 Places That Don't Need the Holidays to Twinkle and Sparkle

"Constructed on the campus of the Australian National University in 1959, this futuristic dome housing the nation’s foremost scientific society, the Australian Academy of Science, is known as the Shine Dome. But given its location in the city that houses the country’s embassies, its nickname, the “Martian Embassy,” has proved an enduring one. The structure’s diameter is nearly 155 feet, making it Australia’s largest free-standing dome, and even larger than the domes atop St Paul’s in London and the Pantheon in Rome. At night, the dome is known to light up in different colors, further complementing its otherworldly appearance. Another peculiar feature of the dome is the moat surrounding it. University students have been known to take a dip when celebrating their graduation. There is even a small ramp installed to prevent ducklings from drowning in the shallow water. If the outside of this building appears confusing today, spare a thought for the very first visitors to the inside of the dome. Several of them suffered from nystagmic motion sickness, due to an optical illusion caused by unevenly spaced wooden panels in the walls. Fortunately, a former fellow of the academy came up with the solution of hanging strings alongside the panels, breaking the illusion." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

I have driven past this building all my life but only recently went to have a closer look. It is beautifully built and I love the moat around the outside, it looks just like a UFO hovering above a lake, very fitting for Canberra! We did not attend an event, we simply went to look at the building.

Lovely old cute building! They hold science events here. Lovely lecture space with huge seating. Only consequence is that it doesn't hold that many people due to the large spacious area you get to sit. Events have been catered here and have been enjoyable. Lovely age to the building.

Nice to come and watch this. Academy of science. A building becomes a heritage list. The building is surrounded by water, and the lights should be very beautiful at night.

Iconic home of the Australian Academy of Science. Spartan interior with and acoustically designed main room for presentations. The seats are so comfortable it’s hard to stay awake, even during the most enlightening scientific presentation. Great place for events if your looking for a symposium venue. Definitely worth a drive by to see the architecture, even if you’re not a scientist.

Usually when you are presented with a menu you might expect that means you have the choice between different items. How foolish of you ! Here you will be forced to eat whatever is set down infront of you, and if you ask for the other dish you will be rebutted by the server. And honestly you deserve it, how dare you ask such a ridiculous question ! Naruki just wanted to eat the chicken, damnit !

A great venue for speeches. Good catering, free off street parking, and a convenient location. This year's series is on AI and the first lecture proved highly engaging.
