The Shirley Arms Hotel

As a doctor working locum in a clinic in Carrickmacross, I recently stayed at the only hotel in town for the second time The Shirley Arms. I stayed in a double bed room, which was comfortable and well-maintained. However, I encountered an issue with the TV remote, which unfortunately did not work—a common problem I've noticed in many hotels. The shower only provided very warm water, and I found it difficult to adjust the temperature to something cooler. This was disappointing. The menu in the dining area is quite pricey, with main dishes starting at €25. I ordered a small plate of prawns along with a glass of White House wine. The prawns were decent, but nothing exceptional for the price. One aspect that stood out negatively was the breakfast service. The waitress was quite loud, rude and seemed overly bossy, which detracted from the overall experience. A more pleasant and accommodating demeanor would greatly improve the dining atmosphere. I hope to see enhancements on my next visit.

We stayed a couple of nights here and enjoyed being in Carrick. The rooms were very nice but left down by two elements. Firstly, during fairly warm summer weather they were extremely hot with no ability to fully open the windows. Secondly, the shower was very hot and extremely difficult to alter the temperature due to a very stiff control tap - this was the case in multiple rooms (we knew other people staying here) and is something they need to sort out. Breakfast was generally good but could have done with at least some vegetarian options. Service was pleasant and the reception staff were particularly good.

From the minute you walk in the door at reception you know this is a special place to be. The staff are so engaging and friendly and can't do enough for you. The room we were given was spotlessly clean and very well appointed. At dinner that evening was fantastic and everything was served with a smile and a bit of crack. Menu was great with plenty to cater for all tastes and was cooked to perfection. The only downside was that were only staying for 1 night. We were over for a wedding and stayed another 2 nights at Cabra castle. If we are back in this area again we will definitely be staying at the Shirley.

Go for food here any time we are in area,never been disappointed. Their beef stroganoff is to die for. Made with fillet steak and great portion. Had lunch time special today, need to be there before 3pm, €16.50 for sirloin of beef ,turkey and ham

I stayed here as I was picking up my wedding dress in Zadika Bridal next door to the hotel which was so handy! The staff were all so friendly and welcoming. The room was lovely and clean was I loved The Hand Soap Co hand/body/shampoo in the bathroom- really nice touch. Breakfast reminded me more of a B&B breakfast more so than a hotel. Limited buffet selection and you order your hot meal off the menu. Breakfast was tasty just didn’t feel like a hotel breakfast. The parking was very handy too.

Room was okay, but shower was scalding hot I had to wash my hair in the sink. Unacceptable and should have been compensated in some way. Breakfast and bar staff were great!

Stayed overnight due a continued wedding event in carrickmacross, affordable hotel, room was nice, beds need upgrading,shower handle broken, so couldn't change temperature. Staff very friendly and ongoing. Location was perfect for what we needed.

This is only for the Bar and Nightclub. I went with my cousins for pub food and drinks. They had a nice selection, and the food was delicious. I had fish and chips: thick and juicy battered slabs. My cousin, who isn't usually a fan of hamburgers, thought it was terrific. The price felt a little steep, but at least the food was top quality and there was a nice selection of beers and ciders. The entertainment was terrific: they had a live singer who skillfully belted out some karaoke favorites (Friends in Low Places, to Build Me Up Buttercup to Galway Girl). The nightclub underneath was clean and trendy- very well designed with good music. Unfortunately, the clientele was definitely lacking. No spirit up at the bar, especially with such good music, and the club was fairly empty- though the few who were present certainly had energy. maybe cover is too steep- come through the bar like we did and you won't have to pay. Recommended... especially since there aren't many other options in Carrickmacross.
