On the Grid : The Sill

"The Sill is one of our favorite places to shop for plants in all of New York City, offering amazing customer service and a busy calendar of events in their tiny shop on Hester Street to help you learn exactly how to keep that fiddle leaf fig or pothos alive. The best part about visiting this spot recommended by passersby like Alyssa Coscarelli, Allie Berman, and Holly Mitchell may be stepping inside and breathing in the fresh, green air. Ahhhh, instant relaxation." - Passerbuys

I visited The Sill on 10/20/21 for a private event. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about the various plants. The Sill has very beautiful plants that I haven’t seen before. They have plants for everyone, those who have a green thumb and those who tend to kill plants. I decided to purchase a money tree in the hopes of it growing real money, just joking lol. The atmosphere is welcoming. If you happen to be in the Williamsburg area, stop by and support this business by purchasing a plant or two.

I became a plant mom couple of years ago. I've heard of the Sill on social media but actually never been. The sill employees were all very friendly and knowledgeable. Amanda was my person. She answered all of my questions and have me a walk through. I walked out with 2 new plant babies. A pink callisia (my first hanging plant) as well as a velvet black alocasia which sat on a beautiful blush hyde planter.

Plants are in decent shape overall, better than ordering from the online store as the plants get less traumatized being shipped. But the soil can't be trusted. I bought a large bag of soil, unfortunately as I was repotting a plant I bought at the store I discovered two packing knives and a ton of shredded plastic in the soil. Thankfully didn't slice my hand open on the two packing knives. The disappointing part is that customer service only responded by passing on the issue to their QA team.

The employees are plant EXPERTS. Whether it’s a dying Rex begonia or a stubborn monstera, the sill can help. Also got this adorable FLF to remind me of the fond memories made at The Sill.

The Sill is awesome! The place is small, but filled with beautiful, healthy plants. Barbara was so friendly and helped us a ton with finding the perfect plant. The plants were packaged beautifully and the person who was gifted them absolutely loved the plants we got him. Highly recommend this place!!

Google
Great shop if you’re in the market for plants or pots! And if you buy a plant + pot, they will do the repotting for you right in store! My friend and I visited a few plant stores in the neighborhood and found this one to have a wide selection and the best prices. I also really liked how they displayed all the plants based on needs, it was very helpful for a plant novice like me who doesn’t actually know too much about plants. The shop overall was a bit small though, we were the only ones there so wasn’t an issue, but I can imagine it being annoying to navigate with a few people browsing at once.

I wouldn’t recommend shopping here for a plant. I bought a rattlesnake calethia along with a soil moisture gauge on their recommendation. The moisture gauge is egregiously inaccurate, which lead me to significantly overwater my plants and now I have to make a serious mess in my bathroom trying to save it.

I had so much FUN at The Sill in Williamsburg yesterday. Barbara and Maeve were both amazing and really helped me pick some gorgeous plants and also feel confident about repotting them and taking care of them. I don't live anywhere near Williamsburg, but I will DEFINITELY make it a point to come back to this location because of the great service. Thank you!

Yelp
Honestly, I was so excited to finally come inside here with intentions to buy something. I have been wanting a plant for a while, but some plant shops I feel like are hard to navigate for beginners like myself. This plant store CLEARLY LABELS what each type needs (brightness), whether it is a beginner friendly plant, and everyone is so willing to answer questions if you ask. Went home with a new baby, and I am excited for it to grow :D Will definitely be back, especially since it's right next to Blue Bottle, which I frequently go to.

Yelp
I usually don't write reviews but after such a pleasant visit I feel like I need to share my experience. First of all I love The Sill and I am so glad they opened a location in Williamsburg!! I've purchased many plants online, some experiences not so great so it is such a treat to shop in-store. I came in last Thursday and I was warmly greeted by two lovely ladies. I believe their names were Mel and Amanda. Unfortunately a few of my plants died after I was away for 2 weeks so I was looking for new plant children to take home! They were kind and eager to answer all the questions I had (I ask a lot of questions lol) and they even offered to repot them!! So sweet. I have a bunch of empty pots at home so maybe next time I will bring them in with me. They were both so knowledgeable about the type of light and water each plant needs. Omg! And this had to be the icing on the cake. They asked me if I live far and since it was so cold outside, Mel carefully placed my plants in little boxes and covered the bag with tissue. And!! Amanda put little pouches of hot hands on the soil so my plants would have a safe journey home. Such a great way to end a long day running post-holiday errands. Will definitely be coming back to this location for all my plant needs!! Tip: if you have any questions they have an Instagram account and you can just message them or send any pics if you have any plant concerns!!

Yelp
I came to the sill on a Saturday night in the hopes of saving my struggling monstera that desperately needed to be repotted with new soil. There were a handful of other customers that the store associates were helping but they still greeted me and asked me how they could help the moment I came in. I initially came for just soil and to look if they had a larger pot for my rather large monstera, but Mel and Jay so graciously took my monstera and offered to re-pot and divide it into two pots!! They went above and beyond to help me. Since I was still skeptical on which pots I should buy, they found me a temporary pot in the back of their store that they used to divide my plant into two! My baby monstera is now thriving and it is all thanks to the TLC from Jay and Mel. They spent almost 20 min bringing my plant to life, trimming dead pieces and even providing me some tips. Can't thank them enough. My new fav plant shop!

Yelp
I hate leaving bad reviews but this was a terrible experience. These folks decided to hang their holiday decorations in the middle of the day. Placed a ladder right in front of the door. No way around it. Four customers piled up outside while two staff members didn't acknowledge us. I finally had to ask if they were open and one of them went "Yeah." Then paused while I stared at the ladder I couldn't get past before grudgingly moving it. It's a shame. I was excited to have a nice plant store so close by.

Yelp
I've gone to the sill before near the lower east side but I'm so happy they opened this store in Williamsburg! I was looking to repot my old plants and they were so nice to do it. I also bought some new plants which they recommended for beginners. I love the Sill and I'm happy they have this location with such nice employees thank you to everyone that helped me (someone who's just getting into plants)!

Yelp
my favorite The Sill location bc of the amazing customer service and knowledgeable staff (always get helped by Leo and Mel that go above and beyond). love the organized + wide selection of plants! always feel seen and welcome at this location :-)

Yelp
This place has a nice selection of affordable plants that draw you in but be warned that even the smallest of pots are gonna run you 30$+ in my experience. The macrame hangers on offer were also 55$ for a basic hanger?!?? Would love to support this business and come back for more but the prices are what turned me away, especially with so many smaller mom and pop type shops nearby that are selling large variety of pot options for a much more reasonable price. In saying that my coffee plant is thriving so they're foliage is great quality, just wish it wasn't so expensive.
