My fiancée's birthday weekend was coming up, and we were still deciding what to do. We had other plans that she kept being unsure of, and then Friday morning she asked about staying in Palm Springs for a night, to get away from the boring old routine at home. She told me about a great deal she found on a mid-century styled little hotel in Palm Springs. Mid-century modern already made my ear perk up, so I looked at it with her and gave her my card to book it. I'd never been to Palm Springs so I figured it'd be a good adventure for me too.
TLDR: Cute, clean, affordable spot... super chill and relaxing, vintage vibe. Staff was amazing, views were great. Older property, so that always brings quirks. I'll be coming back! Read on...
It was a little hard to find the entrance due to renovations, but we found it in the back by the small parking lot. Check-in was smooth and pleasant - they have a really cute Airstream trailer as their check-in office, right next to the pool. We received our keys (yes - actual keys!) on a traditional vintage-looking keychain. Very fitting for the theme they were going with. I REALLY hope they continue this and not use a key card system. That's just boring. Please keep the real room keys! There was a cold water dispenser, towels, ice machine, and plenty of seating around the pool and jacuzzi. The landscaping inside was on-point and theme-appropriate... barrel cactuses, palo verde trees, rocks, gravel. It definitely fit the Desert Modern aesthetic of the area. There was low-volume, unobtrusive but amazingly awesome music playing for ambiance - stuff like Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, Astrud Gilberto, Doris Day... pretty epic. And the view - oh my, the view of Mt. San Jacinto and surrounding mountains was spectacular.
They are still working on renovations, so please be patient. The room was super clean, spacious, and the bed was super comfy!. There was a flat screen TV, no phone (a vintage phone would have been awesome) and the furniture was period-appropriate. There was a kitchen area with a sink, coffee maker (and all the necessary accoutrements), as well as a safe, several drawers, and waffle robes. Bathroom was okay, there was some peeling in the tile in the small shower, like it had been re-glazed at some point in the past, but as I mentioned, renovations were still happening (I noticed two units being worked on the last day of our stay, and BTW, I heard zero construction noise, so whatever they were doing was quiet and unobtrusive. All the staff was super friendly and helpful. Some reviews I saw said the TV was small, and there were no USB ports. First off, USB ports are insecure, bring your own charger and cord. TV is small? Go to the pool, or go check out downtown Palm Springs instead. It's very nice! I found the TV to be more than adequate, about 36" is what I saw... I had no problem viewing it from the bed...
I don't really do pools and water, but I'll sit next to them and enjoy the sun and the view. The pool area was very clean, and my fiancée said both the pool and jacuzzi were clean and both at a good temperature. There were some floaty things to use if you wanted to. The guests were all very mellow, which make it even more relaxing. Quiet hours are from 9 PM to 9 AM, but the pool and jacuzzi are open 24x7, and there is a (friendly) security guard that walks the grounds at night. I did see people using the pool area late into the night, and everything seemed very safe and relaxing.
A complimentary breakfast was served in the morning, and there was plenty of food (bread, bagels, cereal, fruit, frittata, bacon, waffles, yogurt, and milk, coffee, and fruit juice, along with jams/jellies, cream cheese, honey, and maple syrup). Some took their food poolside, some inside. The food was all tasty and well-prepared. We laid out in the sun for a bit. She enjoyed swimming a little bit, and secured a late checkout for us. I enjoyed the amazing views and nice dry heat. I was sad to leave, to be honest, and next time, I'll book two nights.
I will DEFINITELY be coming back. The place was super cute and the vibe was nice. It was a family friendly atmosphere. The rooms are all smoke-free, as is the property in general. I did not see anyone smoking, and since we are both smokers, we just went outside around the front or in the parking lot if we wanted to smoke. I do believe you can bring alcohol to the pool area, just no bottles, please, for obvious reasons (there is a sign stating it).
If you want to enjoy a 50s - 60's motor hotel experience at a decent price (it was pretty affordable), I think this is the spot. There are other themed hotels nearby, but the prices are through the roof. Since this is a legit vintage spot, there may be some imperfections, but as I mentioned, my room was spotless and clean. No odors, no stains. Bed was great. Staff is nice.
