The Best Hotels in Bali, From Beach Bungalows to Cliffside Villas

"This 12-room bolthole is all of Canggu distilled into an achingly cool cocktail of art, music, and interior design. Conceived by fashion designer George Gorrow and his wife Cisco, the hotel matches brutalist concrete with tropical teak wood and mid-century modern furniture, topping it off with a jealousy-inducing collection of works from Gorrow’s artistic friends. Downstairs, the restaurant dishes up comforting fare inspired by Balinese flavors and international classics, the caramelized half chicken with Sichuan salt and fermented chili mayo is a must. On the shopping front, there’s a sleek boutique with edgy T-shirts under Gorrow’s Non-Type label and a wide collection of Cisco’s beautiful ceramic-and-wood tablewares." - Chris Schalkx, Juliet Kinsman

The Slow

"Take us to the place. What's The Slow all about? It wasn’t so long ago that if you were to drive down Batu Bolong you’d pass grazing cattle and reach an organic café at the end of the street and a quirky hotel called Tugu. Now it’s packed with so many sushi joints, boutiques, and hipster-packed cafés you could almost drive straight past The Slow, which has a bar-restaurant and an adjoining gallery and concept store. Who's behind it?The Slow is the baby of George Gorrow, the founder of an Australian fashion label, and his wife, Cisco Tschurtschenthaler. Great. So let's get to the most important part: the rooms. What are they like? If we could secure one in particular, which would it be?The tropical-brutalism aesthetic blends local artisanal design and urban minimalism in 12 concrete-cast suites. Since there isn’t much in the way of facilities, it's especially important that the bedrooms nail the simple, stylish, and cool essentials. We especially loved the ready-mixed cocktails in the minibar and the big dial by the bed, which switches on a perfectly pitched retro playlist. The four ground-floor rooms have private plunge pools—and you definitely want to book one of those. How about the restaurant on site? Worth a stop, or should we look elsewhere? The roadside bar-restaurant, with hanging plants and arty photography, punches above its weight when it comes to small plates; hand-crafted tactile ceramics are filled with a fresh spin on Indonesian flavors. Pause on a sofa or barstool for a triple-distilled-arak cocktail, and you'll notice that the vibe here feels on-par with fashion-forward urban hangouts. How's the service? As low-key and laid-back as the property is, the team here stands poised to tend to your immediate needs. What kinds of people are most likely to stay here?Off-duty creative directors, drifting digital nomads, and a see-and-be-seen generation of surfer-model-influencers. Zoom out a bit. If we venture beyond the hotel grounds, what are we likely to find? What should we seek out?Canggu is made up of zig-zaggy dirt roads from Umalas, Berawa, Echo Beach, and Pererenan. At the end of the road, at the sea, hard-partying boarders flock to Old Man’s beer garden for pints of Bintang. More upmarket sundowner options are Ji, the rooftop bar at Hotel Tugu, and the Lawn, which is right on the beach. Bottom line: Why would you recommend this property? The switched-on stylings and comfortable suites do the basics well." - Juliet Kinsman

14 Best Bars in Bali | Condé Nast Traveler

"Located inside one of Bali’s most achingly stylish hotels, Eat & Drink at The Slow is a surfer-luxe hangout that marries cool gray concrete with wood paneling. The vibe is at once bohemian and ultra-contemporary, and the food and cocktails match the bar's gorgeous looks. Chef Robbin Holmgren’s all-day menu, inspired by Asia, Europe, and South America, is a cut above. Keep things light with the likes of marinated watermelon or tuck into braised short rib and grilled baby corn. This is a swanky, versatile option for drinks and superb food after a jaunt (or surf) in Batu Bolong Beach." - Travis Levius

I really loved my stay at The Slow. The room was beautiful l spacious, well designed, and they were super generous with what they provided. It definitely has a great aesthetic and vibe. The only major downside was the noise. The windows have almost no sound insulation, so I could hear everything; traffic, people talking, even the reception phone ringing. Unfortunately, it made it really hard to stay asleep at night, which took away from an otherwise amazing stay with great staff that were very helpful

Came to The Slow for lunch — hopefully next time for a stay too.. Met up with an old colleague here, kind of like a mini reunion. The place is perfect for catching up. Not too crowded when we came, so it was easy to have a nice conversation without too much noise. All the staff were super friendly and helpful, they’re also good at recommending what to try, which I really appreciate 🙏🏻 I ordered something that looked like a quesadilla (sorry forgot the name!) — mostly filled with white cabbage, pineapple, cheese, and a few other ingredients. Taste-wise, it was pretty good — light, fresh, and comforting, but nothing too standout…Still enjoyed it though 🤤 Looking forward to coming back — next time, maybe to stay the night🛋️🛏️

The room was immaculately clean and I loved the design. The private plunge pool was also a great addition. The staff were very friendly and accommodating; storing luggage for me and getting in touch when my room was ready ahead of the advertised check in time. You are in the middle of Canggu so there is some noise from the surrounding area, this didn’t bother me but might be worth keeping in mind if you’re a light sleeper. Loved my stay here and hope to return when I’m next in Bali.

We were looking for a bolt hole in the middle of the action in Canggu with a private pool we could relax in when we got a bit over the hustle and bustle outside. The room was really great and we loved the aesthetic and design of it -- it was beautiful. Not a lot of services offered really on top of the room itself, but that was fine and all we were interested in.

Chic and Memorable Stay at The Slow Hotel Our stay at The Slow was nothing short of relaxing. The room was incredibly chic and aesthetic, exactly what you’d expect from a Condé Nast-recommended spot. We stayed in a room with a private pool, which added a touch of luxury to the experience. Overall the staff is super chill and the rooms are comfy, cozy, chic. I felt like I could really take a load off here and still feel inspired. One of my favorite features was the house music that piped into the room—it set the perfect vibe. I also loved the huge movable glass wall. The design was so nice to and most importantly the room stayed cool. I took the opportunity to work remote in the room and had no issues with wifi. Oh and it’s super close to EVERYTHING. The Slow is a must for anyone looking for a stylish and relaxing getaway. Can’t wait to return.

Fantastic service, love the concept and how easy and beautiful everything was. Generously sized rooms with a calm relaxing atmosphere. Wulan was brilliant and the team were very responsive to our needs. Loved all the thoughtful touches and accessories in the room. It can get a bit noisy when a band is playing in the bar but I’m still a fan.

We stayed here for two nights during the New Year's Eve period and loved the spacious design of the room. However, our experience turned into a nightmare at night due to non-stop noise that continued until 5 or 6 AM. We could hear fireworks all night long, people talking on the streets, scooters, and loud music from the bar, as if they were happening right next to us. The sliding glass doors used as windows failed to block any of the noise from the street. At one point, around 2 AM, we recorded an average noise level of 75 dB in the room. Neither of us could fall asleep until 5 AM for both nights, which significantly disrupted our holiday. Additionally, the phone line in the room was not working, so I had to search online for their WhatsApp to file a complaint. Unfortunately, they couldn't offer us a room on the quieter side or provide any refund, and I was told the only solution is to air plugs, which is still loud after I wear them. The only compensation offered was a piece of merchandise. Wouldn’t recommend unless you are either a party goer that goes until 5 am every night or you don’t care about your sleep during holidays.
