10 Best Spas in San Diego | Condé Nast Traveler

"Part of the serene, Spanish-Colonial-style Rancho Bernardo Inn , this intimate spa is half-hidden by towering cypress trees, flowering bushes, and lots of greenery. You'll feel equal parts indulgent and virtuous after a day at their palatial, paraben-free spa, where fresh fruits and herbs round out relaxing treatments. P.S., if you came all the way here and didn't get a treatment in one of the casitas, you did it wrong." - Archana Ram

They have staff who seem to be stressed out and probably need a spa day themselves so that they can smile and feel relaxed. They are very stiff and are not cheerful. I have a medical condition and filled out all the necessary papers that nobody paid attention to. It took the masseur 10 minutes to prop me up but stopped the massage after 40 minutes saying my 50 minutes is over. She never read my medical need/condition. I didn't get my 50 of massage. The inside is not well maintained. It was slippery and a little bit dirty. The outdoor swimming pool had bugs and leaves. My experience did not meet my expectations. My advice to the staff who checks you in..please smile and make us feel at home. After all, we are paying a lot!

My sister and I spent a few days here and really enjoyed it. I did not have trouble with dirty facilities during our visit. We had great food, and splurged on the chef's tasting menu which we both found extra special. My sister chose this resort for it's more down to earth quality, and I guess it's fair to say that the facilities did not seem very new. All in all i would recommend this place for it's value for money. My massage was decent, not amazing, but I felt satisfied by the resort. Glad we went.

Every time my family and I stay at this spa resort in Rancho Bernardo, we leave feeling rejuvenated and happy. The staff is incredibly welcoming and always knows how to brighten your day. Their genuine care and attention make each visit special. We can't wait to return in July!

Google
The massage itself was great, but the “spa” experience left much to be desired. Check-in staff seemed a little put out with questions, bathrooms/changing rooms were not well kept, and the whirlpool looked like it belonged in a cheap motel, not a spa. Again, my massage was really nice, but the amenities were not so great.

One of my favorite local resorts, hard to believe this gorgeous place is in the middle of Rancho Bernardo's residential area on a beautiful golf course. Even for a Monday night the place was busy, and as golfers came in at the end of the afternoon, the outdoor restaurant area filled up. Live music was playing and the service was great. I also have a spa only saltwater pool as well as a family pool in the main area. We are locals but decided to stay for a fun one night staycation. I have been plenty of times before for the spa, for dinners and lunches, as well as a few company Christmas parties during the holiday season. During the holidays it's also decorated beautifully with Christmas trees, rolling fireplaces and strong lights. Love staying here!

Google
Such a great afternoon at the RBINN! This place is really cool and very relaxing! Pretty cool check in area. They check you in and then you go down to your locker room to get in your robes. There is a chill room with little snacks and good tasting water. The massage was really nice my lady was super good at using lots of pressure since that's what I asked for. The lady was really nice and very attentive and made me feel great! We did the indoor couples massage and It was a great day date for my fiancée and I. Just a couple tips get the package that includes lunch, and a drink down at the pool the food was great we did the shrimp tacos and the chicken sandwich. Both are really good. The pool was great and super refreshing bring your bathing suit!

Took my sister for a spa day here for her Birthday, the resort is beautiful, friendly staff, had our massages in the cabanas outside-I definitely recommend! Loved both of our masseuses. We had full access to the pool, jacuzzis and workout facilities as well. The only negative was sister has hip issues and getting to the spa area is a bit of a trek going downhill which I find defeats the purpose of getting a massage with having to trek back up the hill at the end of the day. Other than that we enjoyed our experience. We plan to come back for facials but going ask for a courtesy ride 🙏🏼.

Google
It is a nice place but if you are not purchasing an extra spa treatment, then it has no point to pay extra only for the usage of pool. Still, if you prefer silence or reserve a cabana for a special group, you may go for it.

Yelp
My husband and I did a local weekend getaway at Rancho Bernardo Inn and enjoyed a pool and spa day. Our couples massage in the outdoor hut was wonderful. I had a prenatal massage and was VERY pleased with their table/pillow setup. I've had a lot of prenatal massages and nothing is more disappointing than having to lay on your side and receive half of a body massage at a time. They had a huge large pillow cutout so I could enjoy a true face down massage. The locker rooms were a bit snug, I've experienced better, but they had what you needed. The pool was beautiful with lounge chairs for anyone and cabanas for rent. The reason I couldn't give a full 5 stars was because our server forgot to place our lunch order all together! She apologized and said that her boss pulled her into the office to give her an annual review (at 1:00pm on a Saturday). Yikes. The gift shop at the spa was adorable and very tempting as well :)

Yelp
What happened to the Spa at the Rancho Bernardo Inn? I've been coming here for years,..girls day, bridal party weekend, couples, etc. It's always been one of my favorites in San Diego until now. While the grounds are still absolutely gorgeous, the pool's beautiful and the Casitas for the massages are charming , There is a concerning change in regard to service, amenities and price structure. Let's start with the pricing structure. First of all there are no more affordable packages. Everything is ala carte and the basic services are $200 for 50 minutes. And that, is not including a tip by the way. Next issue, the check-in process . you pay upfront when you check in after waiting in a line and unless you decide to leave your tip then , not even knowing what kind of service you're going to receive from the technician, you must return after your procedure to wait in line again and pay the tip. UGG!!! There are no instructions given to you about the locker rooms and there's nobody in there to help you either. Everything seemed a bit dirty & not well stocked. I could not locate any spa sandals. They don't have a quiet room and the locker areas are noisy, loud, crowded and completely open with no place to even set your things down or hang anything , sorry, but that's not what I want or would expect from an expensive spa experience. The Jacuzzi is small and dated and the day I went the steam room emitted no essential oils like they did in the past. Once again that area was totally small with not enough hooks on the walls to hang your robes, etc. once in the Casita, with my technician, I noticed exposed wiring on the underside of the roof, and it was actually a bit stuffy and hot the day that I did my massage. Both my facial and my massage were very basic. Nothing out of the ordinary, I mostly felt like someone was just there to soothe and rub different creams on my body. I've been to the pool area before, but since they only provide shade in primarily the reserved cabanas which run upwards of $150 for the day, I passed. Nope. I'm really sad to say I probably won't be back to the RB spa again unless they make improvements to all of the above. There are too many other wonderful choices here in San Diego that give you a little more bang for your buck.

Yelp
Spent an entire spa day here with my friend for her birthday. We don't have a lot of extra income but we wanted to treat ourselves. As far as the level of luxury you're getting here I would say it's maybe a 3/5 but it's still very nice. Yes, some things are dated and in need of a little love, the locker room is pretty tight and it gets awkwardly crowded at times, the massage casitas all have tarps thrown on top, and the lounge chairs aren't in the greatest shape. The gardens and grounds however are very well kept, the pool is amazing and so warm and the food was delicious (although it took a while to get to us). The stand out for us though was our massage experience which was so peaceful and relaxing. We loved being in the outdoor casita and hearing the sound of the fountain. Rozy and Jeassica were very friendly and helpful and both gave us amazing massages. We could tell they were very experienced! Here's the thing, the other spa/hotel options in this area are going to cost you close to $100 more so you just have to decide what is worth it for you. We had a smaller budget and got away with spending a little under $300 each which included our 50 min massage with 20% tip, one entree and drink with an added service charge, and validated valet parking. We would totally come back!

Yelp
Amazing time at the spa! Property is very beautiful. Most relaxing facial. Skin felt so soft and hydrated. We also had access to the pool. We lounged and had lunch by the pool. Food was good and server was very attentive. Very relaxing atmosphere and great service.

Yelp
Okay so we've stayed here multiple times before and we were recently here just over the weekend... The hotel: the staff at the front desk Friday night I believe her name is Clara (Asian) she's very very sweet and very nice! I just want to say, thank you to her because we checked in pretty late around 10pm but so wonderful The room: we got the suite, and it opened right out to the pool. I love it because it's right next to the cafe which is very convenient for breakfast and a quick coffee. The room that we had came with a king size bed, very spacious and the bathroom were clean and nice!! The spa: so I got a pedicure by margoux and she did a phenomenal job!! Very relaxing and came with a massage (foot massage) I also got a 50 minute deep tissue massage and let me just say Lina you are amazing!!! I'm usually skeptical with the massages at spas because they're not strong enough. But my girl!! She's wonderful!! 10/10!! The bar: happy hours are great!! But it's quaint and nice they even have a shuffle board in there... Anyways overall 5/5 for the staff in this hotel for late accommodations for setting up our room with nice flower decors!! See you all soon

Yelp
For the price, I had to give this spa 3/5 stars. The spa is a short golf cart ride away from the main entrance and down a flight of stairs. Customer service is great, but the amenities weren't anything special. It gets very busy in there so the women's room starts to feel like a gym locker room. The jacuzzi is small and water jets are very standard. Didn't even try the steam room since people kept coming out saying "it's so hot". Showers and toilets are limited with broken dispensers. Massage wasn't anything extraordinary. My masseuse was kind but she really only applied good pressure in a few areas. Otherwise I felt like she was just rubbing oil all over me, despite me asking for moderate-hard pressure. Pretty expensive for only 50 minutes. Beautiful landscaping and pools are bright blue. However, I don't anticipate returning since you can go somewhere else for a lot cheaper and better amenities.

Yelp
I had a horrible experience here with the cleanliness and organization of the spa and locker room. My service itself was lovely, and the staff at reception were as well, but I sent the attached email to the spa director after (this was over 2 months ago), and received no response. I also called her directly and my message was never returned, as well as emailed the parent company without reply. Disappointing to say the least! See email below: My girlfriend and I just left your Spa and had a lovely facial and massage. While the services were wonderful, I have to say the condition of the women's locker room was quite disgusting. The garbage can was overflowing, the linen baskets were overflowing, there was no toilet paper in the bathroom stalls. In addition, there was hair in the sinks, and wet wadded up paper towels all across the counters. The floors were also so filthy, it was uncomfortable to walk around barefoot. I would have taken some slippers, but there were no slippers to choose from. We let the ladies at reception know about the situation, and they apologized profusely, but said they hadn't had time to get back there to clean. I understand and believe this is the case, as the spa was packed, and frankly, there were too many people in the locker room to begin with. I hope you take some time to address the situation, as it's certainly not cheap to have services done at your spa, and while we would have liked to have relaxed and taken our time getting ready, all we wanted to do was get out of that locker room. Please let me know if you have any questions, thanks in advance for attention to this matter.

Yelp
Set upon the expansive grounds of the Rancho Bernardo Inn, the spa is its own own little Italian inspired compound towards the rear of the hotel grounds. Several buildings make up the whole spa, several private treatment bungalows outside (by request), dedicated spa guest pool, and boutique so you have to stroll through outdoor garden walkways from one area to the next. While I agree with some reviews that the facility my look dated and could use some updates, the outdoor gardens are still beautiful. The indoor sauna, whirlpool, steam room I did not partake as it did not look appealing. There is an outdoor whirlpool but set in an isolated and awkward place compared to the other amenities. Michelle was an amazing masseuse. Got the regular massage and she worked the knots outsid without the up charge if requesting "more pressure". Highlight is definitely the outdoor year round heated spa pool for spa guests only. Cabanas available for rent and bar/cafe located at far end of pool. Went during Xmas holiday so not a lot of people plus chilly for some people.

Yelp
We booked a spa day and overall had a great experience. There's a large free parking lot in front of the lobby. It's a 5 minute walk to the spa. If you want, they have complimentary golf carts shuttling people around too. Compared to the other reviews, I must have gone on a lucky day. All of the amenities were working. Along with your service, you have access to their outdoor spa pool (which was pretty large), outdoor jacuzzi (tiny), indoor jacuzzi (medium sized), steam sauna (small), showers, lockers, complimentary robes, gym, and plenty of bottled waters. They offered poolside food and drink orders. We got a massage and pedicure. The massages were done in private cabanas next to the outdoor jacuzzi. It's intimate and serene. I enjoyed the peaceful music and heated massage tables. I wish they had a quiet policy near the pool/jacuzzi area though because it was hard to relax while listening to a group of people talking and laughing loudly. The nail room had space for 2 pedicures and 2 manicures. I appreciated that all the workers were wearing masks and properly sanitizing. Every one was friendly and helpful. Given the price point ($160 for a massage and $65 for a pedicure), I wouldn't be coming back every week but it's a nice place to consider for a special occasion or celebration.

Yelp
My girlfriends & I overall had a divine day here! We got to the spa at 9:30 am on a Tuesday. Check in was a little rough, there was only 1 girl checking people in and she seemed stressed. Eventually another employee came came to assist and she seemed like she knew what she was doing. This was a little stressful since my friend had a massage scheduled at 9:50 am. Once we got checked in we were given a short tour. One friend went straight to her massage & I decided to hangout. Another friend left to get a pedicure which was $80, I don't advise this! That's expensive for something you can get somewhere else for half the cost. The bathroom is equipped with all the spa amenities: robes, brushes, showers, towels, lotion, hair dryers etc. I took a shower got into my robe & sat in this beautiful sitting room to wait for my massage. This room had comfortable chairs with foot rests, pillows, and blankets. There were complimentary snacks, tea, and water. As I waited it was quite with the sounds of soothing spa music & water flow from a water feature outside, I was in heaven. There was also some color supplies on a table where I colored as I waited. My misuses name was Kenneth and he came and got me when it was time for my massage. He took me down to a beautiful courtyard with a large water feature into a casita of my own. The table I laid on was heated and it was dark enough to really relax. I got the holistic massage which was $140 + tip. Kenneth did a great job, he was respectful and asked my multiple times if the pressure was sufficient and took the feedback. I only got an hour but wish it was 2. After my massage I met my friends at the pool & there were 4 other groups there, it was quite & we loved it. Sadly a group came in at noon and was so noisy. I wish spa voices were encouraged in the pool area because I would of preferred to not hear about their plans for their Epcot vacation. There are servers there to take orders for food & drinks. We stayed by the pool until 4 & then went to the jacuzzi. After the jacuzzi we did the whirlpool & steam room the showered & got ready to leave. We left around 5. We will be back. When we do, I want to get there a little early to do yoga which is free for spa guests. I would love to extend my massage time & if I'm feeling really bouje I would get a facial. I would also stay the night because the hotel grounds are beautiful and I want to try the restaurant on site. I would advise going on a weekday because I don't think it would have been really relaxing with a bunch of people there. Happy relaxing!!!

Yelp
Both times I've had a massage here I thought it was the best massage of my life. The outdoor massage hut is a special experience but remember it isn't climate controlled so keep the weather in mind, I was a little toasty when I went in the summer. The locker room area is upscale and has all the amenities you'd need. The pool is very relaxing. Drinks are all from a can and pricey but expected for a resort. Definitely a great spot for a girls day or laid back birthday celebration.

Difficult to purchase gift certificate. Never got a call back trying to specify service for a gift

Yelp
My experience at the spa was great. From the woman who greeted me at spa reception to the facilities to my massage therapist, all of it was great. Where they lost me was with the pool. The pool was highly understaffed. We paid $200 for a cabana and no one came to grab our food order, check on drinks, nothing. When we were able to order, they said only one credit card could be used to open a tab rather than allowing each person to pay individually. They also slapped an 18% service charge on the bill, which felt ridiculous given we had no service. The menu was limited and that too was a bummer. They offer wine and canned cocktails only, so nothing inventive or fresh. Also, one of the few people working came and cleared our food while our group was in the pool. The trouble was she didn't ask and some of us still had half of our meal left. While the spa was great, the pool was a big letdown. A logistical note: it is a serious hike from the parking lot to the spa. The signage is poor and it is really easy to get lost on the property.

Yelp
I love how exclusive this spa feels. There are so many amenities. They have an indoor jacuzzi and a steam room. They have little snacks, coffee, and tea in the waiting room. I love how they have a pool just for the spa guests. The pool is salt water so you float even more easily. There are cabanas to rent too and there is a ceiling fan in there too.

Yelp
At the recommendation of a friend, I booked a holistic massage while staying here. Professional, serene, but inviting. Morgan, my therapist, was excellent-giving me a choice of scents for oil, asked if pressure was okay and few times. The facilities are clean, with a pool and jacuzzi for spa clients. Give them a try.

Yelp
I felt the massage at $200 plus tip was overpriced for what it was. It felt like any massage you could get anywhere. I guess you're paying for the setting (it's peaceful) and use of the pool but, it still wasn't making me want to go back for more.

Yelp
The grounds at Rancho Bernardo Inn are beautiful and my deep tissue massage was fantastic. What is lacking at The Spa is the stellar customer service and pride in upkeep that you would expect from the Rancho Bernardo Inn. At check in, we were asked to pay for the massage before we entered the spa. This is a practice I've only seen at day spas with a much lower price point for service. They offer to let you come back after massage to pay gratuity. The register system is slow so pairing twice, once before treatment and once after is taking extra time. The woman working at the front desk was not very friendly and did not offer any guidance for what to do once in the locker room. While in the spa area. If you had a question or needed anything there was nobody around to ask. This spa does not have a quiet room so I was happy to see outdoor seating outside of the whirlpool area. When I stepped outside to enjoy that space, there was a sign that said "Employees Only." This space used to be open to guests. At the pool, there was one server who was taking orders, making drinks, getting the food from the kitchen all on her own. I heard another guest share frustration that she wasn't coming to them to take orders. Her response to her guest was "People usually see I'm alone and come to me to order their drinks. There's not much else I can do." I felt for the server as she clearly doesn't have the staffing support she needs to provide acceptable customer service. There's also a lack of upkeep with the property in the spa and spa pool sections of the hotel. Not a horrible visit, sub par considering how many spa options there are in San Diego.

Yelp
very disappointed in this place. I booked a massage on my 40th birthday and they called me 50 minus before my scheduled time to tell me the therapist called in sick. they only offered me to use the amenities for the day or reschedule as i was already in the parking lot. they advised me they would try to get someone in and let me know. they never called but to come up to me within the first 20 minutes of being there and ask if I wanted a facial and 10% off. they never called to tell me they couldn't get anyone in. I called to ask for a refund of my gift card and they said that isn't possible. I spoke to a manager and all I got was another apology. maybe the director can help. I have been here multiple times and this visit really put a sour taste in my mouth to even want to return. As you see below the manager asked me to call. I called several times yesterday nobody answers. I left a message yesterday and again today. No response yet.

Yelp
Had a great and relaxing first time at the Spa on 1/13/24. Brianna at the front desk was very sweet and helpful. She was not only this way with me, but the other guests I saw her check in and out . My massage therapist Kenneth(Ken) did a great job at listening and addressing my needs with my holistic massage. The attendant that was maintaining the women's side between 10am-2pm did a great job. Sorry I did not get her name. Will be back!

Yelp
Not worth it. Management was really poor. So was the service and facilities. Do better.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst customer service ever! I would give it zero stars if I could but it's not an option! Extremely rude! My nail tech was kind but the spa Manager and reception were completely incompetent!

Yelp
Really wanted to like this place because of the location. Been here a few times now and have brought groups of friends for a girls spa day, but after this I will not be returning to RB inn spa. I was 2 minutes late for my massage appointment, which was my fault. I was checked in by Arlene, where I apologized for being late and she did not acknowledge my tardiness. She instead escorted me to the locker rooms and took her time demonstrating how to create a locker passcode and instructed me to use the robe, which I thought was interesting since I was already late to my appointment and i had not done this for previous spa appointments at this facility. I paid $175 for a 50 minute massage, and my entire massage felt very rushed and then I was surprised when my massage was cut short to 30 min. I acknowledge that I was late, but i was more surprised that I had not been told my appt time would be cut short. My massage therapist reminded me that I was late and that I could go to the front desk for help. I was directed to Arlene K, the person who checked me in, and the entire encounter from there was really awful. I asked if I could speak with her in private and she tried to direct me outside in the pouring rain. I told her I was surprised that my appt was cut short because no one told me that at check in and if I had known I would have wanted to go straight to the waiting room and not to the locker room to delay my appt time. She was rude the entire interaction and could not explain why she took me to the locker room and said "what did you think was going to happen if you were late?." She said she did not know my appt time when she checked me in, even though I had acknowledged that when I got there. I asked if there was anyone else I could speak to and she said no because she's "the director of spa services." I was just so surprised that for how much money I was paying that she did not even appear to want to find a way to help me or refer me to someone that could. I grabbed my things and when I came back to pay I asked for her business card. She sloppily wrote her name on a piece of paper. On a positive note the other girl at the front desk seemed to understand my frustration. When Arlene left the other front desk girl handed me the business card I had asked for, which was right where Arlene had been standing previously. (Just so unprofessional. In addition, her title is a spa manage, not director which she had claimed to me.) but at least the other girl at the front desk was very sweet and made me feel understood. Overall this was not the relaxing spa day that I had been looking forward to and really this overall experience has been more stressful and not worth the money.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I had previously been to Rancho Bernardo spa a few years back and decided to return for the afternoon of visiting and relaxation on Sunday October 23. We very disappointed with the rundown look of the place. Hoping to enjoy the outdoor spa. We were told where it was located, but we were not told that it was not working the day we were there. When found it, it was not working and green and gross looking. Sitting by the pool, we noticed that the umbrellas had mold on them. The robes that we got at our locker room were very worn down, and many of the lockers had locks that were broken or not working. The clock that was above the indoor Jacuzzi wasn't even working! The food that we ordered at the poolside was more than subpar I could've ordered food from Trader Joe's that was cooked in the microwave and it would've been 10 times better. The massage was wonderful, but by no means made up for the lack of attention to detail to keep the spa clean and updated. Sadly I do not recommend anyone going unless you like paying $175 for a 50 min massage.

Yelp
My sister, mom, and I enjoyed this amazing spa 2 weeks ago when we went to have massages and facials. The whole experience was so relaxing and calm, and it was an overall great way to spend my birthday. The staff were very welcoming, the facilities were clean, and the service was perfect. The food was very filling, and the pool was the perfect temperature. I am looking forward to making these spa trips a regular occurrence!

Yelp
No. Just no. (Except for the massage therapists. They were amazing- ask for Goya) Read on... Booked a massage for myself and two friends at 5:45 PM on a Friday. Was so excited to relax and feel pampered. We arrived at 4:30 but... - pool closed at 4. So did the bar and food there. The front desk told us to call the restaurant for "room service" to be delivered jacuzzi-side, but only until 5. The call went to voicemail "sorry we can't answer your call right now." Ok, so... - one of my group walked (in a spa robe) up to the restaurant. $67 for 4 margaritas (not including tip!) and we were not allowed to bring appetizers down to spa/out of restaurant. We convened at the jacuzzi, 45 mins until massage- surely enough time to connect and unwind, but... -outdoor jacuzzi closed at 5! They asked us to leave. Ok, so... -There is a beautiful garden with water feature next to jacuzzi area. Thought we'd sit there, but no. This is where they do outdoor massages and no seating. Ok. -so went up to spa waiting area because nowhere left to go. Really? - the massage was lovely, but the oil smelled like slightly rancid cooking oil. The therapist had asked what scent I wanted and I had requested lavender. Not a hint of lavender in the room for the entire experience. I Smelled like an old doughnut afterwards and headed to the showers. Pampered? Not by the overall experience, especially for $160. The massage was great, but I wanted to feel lost in luxury and tended to. I don't mind shelling more for more, but that did not happen. No. Just no.

Yelp
Beautiful spa, but the worst massage I've ever gotten. My massage therapist was named Lilly and she used extreme pressure throughout the entire massage, despite me asking her to adjust pressure over 6 times. I couldn't relax at all during the massage because I was in so much pain from from a$$ beating Lilly gave me. It was painful, tense and frustrating, as I kept asking her over and over to apply way less pressure. When the massage started, she started at my shoulders with what felt like a football tackle. She came at me so hard that my body shifted down the table so far that my face wasn't even in the face hole anymore. My husband and I had a couples massage and he had a great experience with Kenneth, but said he kept wondering why I was asking for less pressure over and over. Fast forward to today, and I have a herniated disc for the first time in my entire life. I think it might have something to do with the Fight Club style massage I got.

Yelp
Thank you Ken for an amazing massage experience! You are truly a healer. The spa should give you employee of the month. Thank you again

Yelp
This place used to be magical, now it's a dump poorly disguised as a spa. All the upholstery inside the spa is run down ands stink, and all the things outside are faded, broken or otherwise in poor repair. The day we were there the card reader to all the pools was broken and they refused to just prop the doors open so every time we wanted to switch pools everyone there had to ask an assistant for help-and they were extremely hard to find and seemed annoyed that we requested help. Like others have mentioned, the check in process is ridiculous. The staff are so rude and unwelcoming. They pressure you into tipping before you even had your massage 18 to 25% on top of your already incredibly expensive massage fee. The actual massage itself is so short and lackluster your wonder if you even had it at all. If you decide to eat while you are here, it will take a good 45 minutes to get food delivered to you by some poor overworked food staff member. You are forced to do this because there are no other dining options there Somebody finally will come find you in the pool with your food and surprisingly (or not surprisingly) ask for an additional tip on top of the fee that is already conveniently added to your bill. In case you have not already guessed, we will not be back.

Yelp
Four of us enjoyed 80 min sport/deep tissue massages. They exceeded our expectations! We meet several times per year for a Spa Day. The Spa at RB Inn has been the best massage, hands down. The staff is attentive and helpful. One of our group was in a boot, due to recent foot surgery. The staff drove her from the entrance of the Inn and back in a golf cart. Lunch at the Veranda was an added plus. We will be returning!

Yelp
I felt so pampered and so spoiled. The massage was incredibly relaxing. I had mine out in the bungalows and you can hear the water flowing in the fountains and the birds in the trees. I spent the entire day in my robe or in the hot tubs. This felt like a getaway even though I live locally.

Yelp
I had a terrible experience with this Spa. On the day of my appointment, I had a very infectious disease so I could not make my appointment time. I tried to get for a confirmation email or phone call to reference the cancelation policy. I did NOT have any confirmation of the appointment and there was no cancelation policy on their website. I called 3 hours in advance to confirm with the spa that I had an appointment that day and that I would not be able to make it. They called me back after my appointment time to tell me that I will be charged for missing the appointment. I spoke to Arlene, the director, and she told me that this is their cancelation policy and there was nothing that she could do. I pointed out that I could not confirm my appointment online and the office was not responsive to my calls. Although she could not point to where the cancelation policy is or justify the spa not responding to my calls and voicemails for an entire day, she is charging us anyway.

Desi A.

Yelp
Horrible experience. The director, Arlene, is an atrocious representation for the entire establishment. No confirmation text, email, or phone call after booking. No way to change or cancel a booking. Called FIVE TIMES to try and change/cancel the appointment, left messages, heard nothing back. Got a call later saying I missed the appointment and that I would be charged $100. Spoke to the director and explained the situation, and even brought up that there is NOWHERE that states that they charge for cancellation. I will be disputing the charge. My credit card company will have no problem refunding the money when they cannot show anywhere where I was informed of a cancellation charge. The audacity to charge the fee after ignoring call after call, message after message is astounding.

Yelp
A bit of a mixed review. I came to The Spa at RBI today with two friends to have a day of relaxation. I have previously been to RBI for my own bridal shower where we had spa services and a cabana. I have great memories of that day (pre-pandemic) and had stellar service. The massage was good, and staff and the server at the pool were so friendly and organized. However- I was disappointed to see how grimy the cabana itself was. It's $155 for the cabana rental on top of our massage services, so I expected a bit more. Cushions were stained and ripped which is understandable, it's outdoor furniture, but beyond that it was clear the cabana had not even been swept or wiped down prior to our arrival. One of the chairs had an enormous brown spider hanging out in a web that had clearly been there some time. He was quite comfortable. The cabinet where we stored our bags/clothing last time was filled with dirt and cobwebs when I opened it. The curtains on the side were hard to fully close because half the ties are torn off. It just felt unkempt and grimy. Additionally, there's no robes or showers available (covid policy) and all of the food comes packed in plastic to-go containers with plasticware. The food was fine but like takeout bar food. There's really no cabana service, I went to the bar to order each time. This is by no means a knock on the servers/staff who were definitely hustling and kind to us. I don't think much of this is their fault, minus the dirty cabana, but it's another example of "not worth it until after COVID". Between 3 women we spent $900+ and just didn't get the luxe relaxing spa experience I expected.

Yelp
When I walked into the hotel I approached the first desk I saw to ask for directions to the spa. The woman carried on a personal phone conversation for several minutes, did not acknowledge me at all. Found my way down to the spa (which is not close to the front desk at all). When I entered the spa reception/gift shop a woman started to check me in, another customer approached her and she began gushing "Oh you look so cute! Its adorable on you!" After 2-3 minutes of being completely ignored she told the other girl to check me in. I had to answer the same questions AGAIN while still listening to this employee try to make a sale. The girl who checked me in basically demanded to know how much I wanted to tip up front, stating "18-22% is customary". This was in front of at least 8 other people in the reception which was in a small space so everyone heard. I wasn't able to enter the tip myself, I had to say it out loud in front of EVERYONE. I'm sure they'll blame it on the pandemic but that would be ridiculous as they had so many people crammed into that small reception area. The spa bathroom was beyond belief, no toilet paper for the entire day. The check-in was embarrassing, degrading and a total violation of my privacy. What if my spa treatment was horrible and I only wanted to leave 10%? What if my spa treatment was incredible and I wanted to leave 25%? It was embarrassing but the VIOLATION OF PRIVACY was the worst.

Yelp
The grounds are incredibly beautiful, but the spot is a little difficult to get to. The inside of the women's locker room is on the smaller side, but it is well-kept. The massage rooms are well cat and have a nice ambience about them. The massage therapist was amazing, and she had some great techniques that I had not experienced before and other massages. The pool area is also really well-kept. However, the food and drink is the downside. The Drinks come from a small outside hut, type bar where it's just two young girls working and making mixed drinks. The drinks are inconsistent and random to whatever they want to do and it is really just a small little wooden space they work in. The food gets ordered from that area, but is made somewhere else and takes a really long time and is packaged and put into a bag and brought down to the pool area. Expect your food to take about an hour after you order it. Overall the massage and the grounds are beautiful, but be prepared with the drinks and the food.

Yelp
This is not a real spa experience. It's really just a place to get a massage. The spa pool is dirty -- dead flies floating in the water, debris along the bottom of the pool. Our massage appointment was delayed by 4 hours. There was no discount given and no acknowledgment that this was even a problem from their perspective. This place is more like a Massage Envy than a spa. The massage was very good. Would only recommend for a massage as there aren't really any other typical spa amenities.

Yelp
We had a massage day at this location. The grounds were beautiful. It had a very serene and old world feel to it. The valet attendants were very attentive and fast. The spa attendants were very friendly and courteous. The spa check in was fast and easy. Our masseuse were nice, but techniques employed were mediocre. The main concierge at the main lobby was informative, but lacking charisma (she was not warm and welcoming). The indoor locker room was small and cramped. The indoor jacuzzi was outdated and need some remodeling. I noticed dust on some of the ledges and something dark green is growing on the jacuzzi area. Signage wasn't very clear and can be confusing. Overall, the price of our spa day did not meet expectation.

Yelp
For my daughter's 20th birthday I booked a pedicure and facial treatment. About an hour before her first treatment I called and confirmed both appointment times. When she arrived, she was told the pedicurist had not shown up. To compensate, she was given two complimentary coupons to enjoy the private spa pool and locker room for a whole day. We were fine with this. Our experiences with the staff were great. Today she took her boyfriend to the spa to use the coupons. This time, the staff people who addressed her were quite rude. They refused to honor the coupons (which were even signed by a spa staff person), were curt, suspicious, and generally unkind to her, telling her she was supposed to have called first and they would not honor them. Mind you, this was in the middle of a Tuesday (not crowded), and the requirement of a phone call was not written anywhere on the coupons. My daughter and her boyfriend were sent away with nothing more than a bitter taste in their mouths. I'm sad for her, and bummed that the RB Inn has had to get this 2-star review from me. It costs nothing to be kind, but unkindness will cost you customers.

Yelp
First time here; I will preface the review with noting the actual massage was 5/5. The review 2/5 is for the various parts of the experience. We had the first massage of the day at 930am. When we arrived, the steam room smelled like mildew. Once it was running, it was so loud we couldn't have a conversation until it shut off. The ice water in the lounge area was a day old with no new ice in it. The body wash dispenser was broken in the shower. My guests conditioner dispenser was broken. While waiting for our massage along with 8 other people, there were not enough chairs for everyone in the lounge area. Some people had to stand. I had to ask my therapist to turn down the music in massage room. Too loud. After the massage, we were offered a golf cart to pick us up and drive us to valet. I am very pregnant and there are lots of hills and stairs, so we excepted. But the golf cart never came. We waited for 12 minutes. We finally walked back to valet. I know some of these things seem petty, but they are not. I don't get massages very often. But when I do, I expect to have a 5/5 experience. I wish I would have gone to Hotel Del, where my experience has always been 5/5.

Yelp
Literally just finished my massage appointment on 11/27/22. Unfortunately, this was the worst massage I've had in my life. I booked a prenatal massage for the weekend after finishing a wedding client who got married at RBI as I knew I would be extra tried and sore from a 2 day wedding event as the Wedding Planner. Wow, to say I was extremely disappointed is an understatement. I expressed my trouble areas and areas of focus. She didn't even focus on those areas and just felt like she was rubbing oil on me and not even focusing on muscle tension as you would expect a masseuse to know and be cognizant of. She went to do this "special sugar scrub" on my feet, but again it felt like she was just rubbing it on me without any special focus or reflexology. I asked her to please focus on my legs as they're extremely sore. It felt very rushed the whole time. When she finally got to my calves and hamstrings, again she just rubbed oil on me without any type of massage. She also twisted my leg in a weird and awkward angle that no other massage therapist has ever done. I kept thinking the whole time to myself during the massage where I would be getting my next make up massage this week for this horrible overpriced experience. Part of me even contemplated to just ask her to stop because I was getting annoyed at how bad this massage was, especially for paying over $200 dollars. When the "massage" was overcome I didn't even know. She just took the towel off my eyes, placed it in my scalp and scratched my head for 5 seconds (no type of scalp massage), then took my robe and threw it on me and said "ok I'll be outside". What...? Ok. It's over. I could've given myself a better massage with my hands or hypervolt. I wasn't even told there was a steam room. Which I would've utilized post-massage to try and make up for the unpleasant massage experience. I asked my husband how his massage was, and he said it was OK. Not the best but wasn't as bad as how my massage sounded. I hope others have a better experience. Unfortunately, will not be recommending this spa or have plans on returning.

Yelp
This place is amazing. It was my first time getting a facial and I went with my bestfriend for my birthday. First of all the place is amazing, it's so beautiful and very spacious. We got greeted very nicely and got a ride to the spa via a golf cart which was so fun. We got greeted at the spa reception and directed to the locker room where we were able to change and everything We both got a facial and oh my God these were some of the best 50' of my lifeeee. I literally didn't want to leave the bed I was laying in, the facial was so relaxing and amazing and after it, my skin was literally SO smooth and glowing and beautiful, a little tear came out because I was so happy to see my skin thrive haha. Also the lady who took care of me was super nice, and explained everything she was doing, she also gave me a lot of advice on what to use, how to use it, when and everything which was nice and also gave THE BEST SCALP MASSAGE EVER!!!!!!! Just thinking about it makes me sleepy and relaxed, it felt like I was on a cloud of amazingness!! After our facial we went to the pool where we relaxed and everything and also got lunch. We ordered a bowl, I forgot the name of it but it has a lot of vegetables like avocado, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, it also comes with Quinoa, Kale, and chicken and it was super good! I would've liked it better if it was hot because it would have made everything 1000% tastier but it was a salad bowl so it makes sense it was cold lol. The serving sizes are VERY generous, I couldn't even finish all my chicken which literally never happens lol. The only downside is that you have to pay at the pool if you're not staying in the hotel, which meant we had to walk alllllllllll the way back to our locker and get cash before we could even order which was super annoying because we were in relaxation mode but it's ok, a lil exercise never hurt nobody. Anyways, the food was great, the area was great, the spa/hotel were beautiful and the facials were AMAZINGGGGGGGG!!!!!! Their services are QUITE pricey but it's honestly worth it if you have a little money to spare on yourself!

Yelp
I have been to the Rb Inn Spa a few times now. Every time I go, it gets better. The people are so friendly and attentive, but the facials are just fantastic. Sherry was absolutely amazing- my favorite facial thus far. My husband and I wanted a relaxing spa day and it was seriously the best. We started our morning with a workout at the gym. After a shower with the eucalyptus mist, we were ready to spend some time by the pool. I did the facial/lunch package while he did the massage/lunch package. Lunch was delicious and my piña colada hit the spot! After more pool time, we took advantage of the steam room. This was such a relaxing day. It is a little pricey but definitely worth the splurge.

Yelp
I just called to get information about booking spa services The lady on the phone immediately told me that there is no availability for the date I inquired about. She didn't even check I told her I was able to book online and if this is "false" availability She then responded, "oh ya it looks like i have one cancellation" and to book online Then she hung up on me! She could care less to help Wow - if this is how they treat you on the phone - imagine what a horrible "relaxing" spa day this would be No thanks!

Yelp
I haven't been to a spa in years! RBI was a disappointment. 1- You have to bring your own robe and slippers so don't forget to pack a huge bag. (Other spas are still offering robes and slippers per my spa going friend). 2- Bathrooms in the locker room were out of order. The bathroom you can use is quite a hike away and once there, you'll find a broken sink. Women were changing in a bathroom stall as opposed to a nice locker room....really? Nothing says spa day like changing in a bathroom stall... 3- Locker room: No shower. No amenities. I get that its covid times but that didn't stop The Spa at Rancho Bernardo Inn from up charging for nothing. 4- Oh the shower was also broken. 5- Steam room...nope. 6-Pool and bar. There were two women working the day I was there. Did they stop by and ask if I wanted a drink or food? NOPE. They just sat behind the bar and talked. BTW- You'll pay an additional 25% on top of your $15 adult beverage because of "covid". There is a $5 delivery free + 25% on top of the food you order. You'd think this would come with some awesome service but nope. Girls were just sitting around behind the bar. 7-There must have been a wedding the night before that didn't get cleaned up. So on the way to the bathroom you had to step over a broken wine glass. No one cleaned it up while we were there and we left at 4pm. 8- $8 up fee on services due to covid precautions. Last I checked a mask wasn't $8...no other precautions were taken. I mean they should be sanitizing between clients anyway right? Covid or not? Joey who did my facial was Fantastic! and I always have a good time hanging out with my girls, however I feel ripped off from this lame "spa" experience and hit to MY bank account during these trying times...

Yelp
I was lucky enough to score a spa day here a couple months back before the lockdown occurred. Writing a review now because 1) I have the time, 2) I really miss going to the spa. Getting to the spa is a bit of a hike. I mean... you enter through the lobby and then, after going down a couple flights of stairs and a couple turns, you finally make it to this cute hidden gem. The accommodations here are beautifully set-- one can truly relax with a delicious cup of tea and fresh fruit. It is spacious and relaxing and you almost feel like you are somewhere far from busy San Diego. The 90 minute massage was professional and gave my tense muscles a chance to melt away my stress. A walk in the garden afterwards was the perfect chance to continue to bond with my new found serenity. I miss the spa and am looking forward to being able to safely return here in the future.

Yelp
Overpriced. Overrated. Upon arrival, I was informed that the bathrooms in the locker room were broken, along with the steam room and showers. So 75% of the spa amenities I had planned to use were unavailable/broken. There was a bathroom available in ANOTHER BUILDING (not convenient) that contained 3 stalls -- including a toilet that wouldn't flush, and a sink that didn't work. The spa grounds and facilities were unkempt - leftover dishes on the grounds from a prior event, including half-filled wine glasses, broken glasses, and dirty plates. The locker rooms were not actively being cleaned so dirty towels littered the floor. The entire time we sat at the pool, not a single person came by to take our food order or clean up the empty cups/plates. The ladies working at the pool were nice, but seemed to be hanging in the bar hut all day instead of serving customers. The fees for food/drinks by the pool are ridiculous. An automatic 25% service fee is added to each order, as well as a $5 "delivery" fee for food. (I guess that's why the workers don't hustle - they don't need to earn a tip since it's been built into the fee structure!) There was also an $8 COVID precaution fee added to the spa treatment. RB Inn should pay their employees better instead of having guests supplement their workers' wages. My massage treatment was OK, but I was really looking forward to relaxing in the steam room and following it up with a hot shower. It feels downright gross to get a massage, get rubbed down in lotions and oils, and then have to get back into your clean clothes without taking a shower afterwards. (There was an outdoor shower near the pool but with cold water only. No thanks!) Oh, and we also had to bring our own robes and slippers! Seriously?! I won't be going back. No one should be expected to pay full price for amenities that are unavailable. There are better spas out there, and I would strongly recommend that you seek a relaxing spa day elsewhere! A note to RB Inn -- if the amenities are unavailable, you should give out gift cards or a pool day pass for a future visit. ANY effort to make things right would've gone a long way to improving our experience and this review.

John M.

Yelp
This is not a spa experience. They do not know how to treat customers and the staff , outside of the office staff, have no idea of what guests must pay to be here. Horrible experience - go to a real spa and save your money.

Yelp
Usually love this place, but today they canceled my massage one hour before it was supposed to start (I had already driven here and gotten set up at the pool). Played phone tag and was offered a later massage time which I accepted. Then was called again and told that was not actually available. I asked if there were any other possible things I could have done (pedicure, facial) and was told no. So I took the day off, drove out, got childcare, etc for no service. And was not comped for drinks, lunch, anything. I understand that there are emergencies, but I would really have appreciated a bit more concern or care over canceling on me so close to my appointment time.

Yelp
I would give the facility and our deep tissue therapists five stars. But unfortunately, some other factors brought the ratings down for this potentially amazing spa in RB. Friend treated me to three spa treatments on a staycation (I'm the luckiest girl). You check in with the spa front desk and I personally thought the front desk staff was disingenuous and a bit cold on the first visit. No matter though as my friend shrugged it off and gave me a tour of the spa facility. The women's side has a steam room, jacuzzi, showers, restrooms, lockers. There's a co ed waiting room. My facial was 50 minutes. Friend would have preferred another esthetician for me but I didn't mind the laid back, more gentle facial I suppose. The highlight of our treatments that day were our deep tissue massages. Ask for Alma or Robert. We both thought the sugar scrub was a waste of money and time. It was the costliest of the treatments and the shortest of treatments. 50 min of what was given and charged wasn't right. I'd suggest passing on this treatment and using it on massages with the right therapists. We ordered food poolside while we were there. It truly is such a beautiful pool setting. Service was attentive and you must order their grapefruit mojito. BUT. My goodness. The food was terrible. We ordered: Blackberry Chipotle Wings - I food blog and am sad to write that these wings were *the worst* wings I've ever had. In my life. The thick, cloyingly sweet dark purple sticky sauce that drenched the wings was awful. It made the wings completely inedible for us. Pulled Pork Lettuce Cups - sounded like a great low carb option but the pulled pork was overly salted. There was a weird salty crunch to this dish that makes me still cringe thinking about these lettuce cups. My second visit here proved disheartening. I wasn't able to secure Alma for a deep tissue but was assigned someone that, I was told, does deep tissue massage. It turned out the masseuse didn't know deep tissue but I found out only after the treatment was given. I do thank Lindy and Carol for doing their best to amend this situation. So make sure you know your masseuse's ability before you book him/her. The spa really can be memorable if you have the right therapist and go on a non-crowded did. We didn't try any more poolside food on the second visit (the 1st visit food still haunted me no joke) so we walked to Veranda instead (make sure you to try their Prime Rib french dip!). I hope to revisit the spa (and possibly bring sis/mom for a holiday present) so I'll post with an update soon.
