11 Places That Honor the Victims of 9/11

"“The Sphere” by Fritz Koenig was originally designed as a work of art that was situated between the Twin Towers in Manhattan in 1971. The work was inspired by the Kaaba at the Grand Mosque of Mecca and was meant to symbolize peaceful world trade. After the September 11 attack in 2001, the sphere miraculously remained mostly intact, with only minor damage. After the attacks the sculpture was stored at JFK Airport. Koenig paired up with director Percy Adlon to create a film entitled Koenigs Kugel explaining the creation and history of the sculpture. On March 11th, 2002 The Sphere was relocated to Battery Park and is now recognized as a monument of the victims of 9/11 and is meant to represent America’s strength and resiliency. In December of 2013, it was moved around 550 feet from where it was originally relocated to a place closer to Castle Clinton to accommodate renovations that were going on at the time. On July 22, 2016, the Port Authority voted to move it yet again to the newly made Liberty Park, where it’s been since September 6, 2017." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Stopped by the Koenig Sphere briefly and was really struck by the ambiance. Even though I didn’t have time to linger, the setting is beautiful, with thoughtfully placed benches and a sense of quiet reflection right in the middle of the city. The sculpture itself is impressive and moving. I would love to come back and spend more time taking it in. Highly recommend a visit if you’re nearby.

The Koenig Sphere has an incredible story from surviving 9/11. It's sobering to see it in it's damaged state.

Beautiful, and worth a stop to see, saw it years ago in a different location.

The location noted is partially incorrect. The Sphere is located in Liberty Park, which is the park on Liberty Street near WTC. However, it is also stating the location is Liberty State Park, which is incorrect, this is across the river in Jersey City, NJ. At one point the sphere was located there. Now the sphere is permanently located in Liberty Park.

Without question, the space that now houses the Koenig Sphere (Liberty Park) is a must-see when you are in Lower Manhattan near the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and One World Trade Center. This structure, in my opinion, is a testament to the strength and resiliency that lives within New York City, and the space where this sculpture now rests is absolutely beautiful. The green spaces surrounding the structure will offer a sense of serenity, and the views of Lower Manhattan from this look-out are also stunning! Definitely plan to visit when you're in the area.
