Just came across the Spirit Store last Sunday night completely by accident. It's down at the old docks in Dundalk, a town which I am completely unfamiliar with, and seemed like it should have been on the set of some old Chicago Prohibition film. There were a bunch of fishing boats tied up to the docks (complete with skull and crossbones flying overhead) and a gorgeous view of the Cooley mountains.
The pub itself is bursting with character and there's a real presence as soon as you step in the door. Snugs galore and candles everywhere giving it a very vintage feel but the live music played in a corner by the local young folk and appreciated by all the punters (of all ages, sized and nationalities) gave it that nice lick of energy that makes you relax while anticipate an entertaining evening ahead.
The beers are varied too and it's great to have a selection outside of the usual. Macardals was a totally foreign brew to me and, given they had it on tap and it was the local drink (or so i was told), I decided to make it my choice of drink for the evening.
Head upstairs and you have a state of the art live venue complete with a great sound desk, stage and bar with a seating area that was small enough to feel cosy but big enough to entertain the large group of music lovers who turned up later that evening to watch the live band who electrified the friendly punters who were really up for it.
As I said, it was my first time in Dundalk so this review is based on one night's experience but I will definitely be back to sample some of the magic again!
