This National Park Has 2 Volcanos, Hot Springs, and Scenic Hiking Trails — and Now Is the Best Season to Visit

"A guest-only resort complex built around a series of hot spring–fed pools and lagoons, many of which often offer views of the nearby volcano; the pools and lagoons are reserved for guests and are integrated into the property's thermal-water amenities." - Evie Carrick Evie Carrick Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. "The Springs Resort & Spa The 165-acre Springs Resort & Spa sits 1,000 feet above the Arenal Valley, higher than any other resort in the area and affording each one of its 47 polished-wood guest rooms commanding views of the Arenal Volcano and surrounding countryside. Impressive as those vistas are, the luxury resort’s biggest draw is its 28 mineral thermal pools, which wind through four lush acres. The setting is undeniably romantic—the resort was featured in an episode of The Bachelor —but families are welcome, with activities for kids of all ages. Club Rio, on the resort’s half-mile of river frontage, offers tubing, kayaking, mountain biking, and horseback riding; there’s also a wildlife preserve for rescued native animals, including monkeys, ocelots, jaguarundis, sloths, and a puma. Five restaurants (and five bars) mean there are plenty of options, from casual poolside dining to tasting-menu elegance."

A true 5 star resort! We stayed in a Grand Vista room, and it was incredibly spacious two queen beds plus a large pullout sofa, making it an excellent option for families. The view of Arenal Volcano was absolutely stunning, and truly every room on the property has an exceptional view. The property itself is beautiful but very large. Golf carts are readily available to get around, which is helpful. There is one main pool along with multiple mineral hot springs at varying temperatures, spread throughout the resort. The monkey slide is a fun and surprisingly fast. This is a true 5-star resort with an impressive amount of amenities: 28 hot spring pools, 15+ hot and cold pools, an on-site animal sanctuary, five restaurants, a full-service spa, water slide, kids’ game room, bocce court, fire pit, and a 9-hole putting green. There are also plenty of activities including a rock-climbing wall, kayaking, hiking, and white-water rafting. The spa is beautiful and full service, with a sauna and steam room. I had a Swedish massage, which was excellent. During our stay, we went horseback riding, toured the wildlife sanctuary, and spent time relaxing at the spa. The wildlife on property was incredible we saw a mama sloth with her newborn baby, tons of monkeys, dart frogs, snakes, toucans, and a wide variety of unique birds and insects. Overall, The Springs Resort is an outstanding luxury property with unmatched views, wildlife, and amenities perfect for families, nature lovers, and anyone wanting a high-end Costa Rica experience.

We had a truly magical time here. The service was phenomenal from start to finish, and the staff was always friendly and accommodating. Even though it was a bit cloudy during our stay, the views were still beautiful. The hot springs were the highlight, there was a great variety of temperatures (hot, warm, and cold), and they were perfect for my daughter to relax in as well. As for activities, having the excursions right down below the hotel was a huge plus. It saved us a lot of travel time and made it easy to pack in as much fun as possible without the hassle of driving to other destinations. The only area for improvement would be the dining and drinks. While the breakfast was amazing and always delicious, the other restaurants were just okay, and the cocktails felt a bit watered down. That said, the overall experience was fantastic. We would definitely recommend it and are already planning to go back!

My husband and I recently booked a day pass for the Springs resort and because it was over the holidays, it was only a one-day pass vs. two. It is quite pricey so I would recommend planning to make the most of your time. It's a beautiful property but expect it to be fairly busy so you will be spending time with other couples and/or families in the hot springs. Additionally the food and drinks are also quite expensive. We had some tacos at the pool bar and they were delicious. They have lockers to protect your belongings as you explore the property throughout the day which was convenient. If you are staying at a less expensive, more basic hotel in the area, a day pass would be a great option to get the best of both worlds. If you are staying at another luxe resort in the area, maybe opt for a cheaper hot springs experience because I am not sure it was worth it for a few hours.

What an amazing resort! We had such a lovely time with our family. Gigantic rooms facing the volcano. We were lucky that we got clear views of the peak from our balcony. We stayed at the Arracaria building. The thermal springs were incredibly relaxing. Dunno how they manage it but every single member of staff is amazing! My only regrets are that we didn’t stay here longer and that every other place in Costa Rica is going to be very ordinary afterwards. Def recommend.

We just returned from 6 nights at Springs Resort. What an incredible vacation! Aside from the stunning location overlooking the volcano and the incredible hot springs on the resort and the built in adventure center, the big stand out for us was the service. The staff at The Springs Resort look like they are having fun... something I have not seen before. They emanate a sense of happiness and positivity that does not seem forced. They laugh with the guests and with one another, smile effortlessly, and when they respond to you over and over, "Pura Vida!", you feel like they actually mean it. They clearly enjoy being there, and that makes all the difference as a guest. Their friendliness and energy seems authentic and natural. What a pleasure to be a visitor there. Special shoutout to Tony at the Tree Top Grill (thank you for the coffee beans!), Jason and Byron. Warm smiles, easy banter, and they made us feel like family. Pura Vida! ~ Kristina Kahn

This is like heaven on earth. The shower covers your whole body and feels like a heavy rain storm with endless hot water. The best shower I've ever had. Same with the pillows and sheets which I'm already looking into buying for myself. Food options there were plenty but I feel those with more western palates like mine might struggle a bit. $28 for breakfast buffet that has everything. The hot springs were wonderful. The slide was more for 12 years and under. My teens were not into it. They have lots of games around the premisis. Volleyball, mini golf, batmitton, chess, and checkers. Club Rio has all the things and I highly highly recommend the white water tubing. We had riders with our tour that were 6 and they were well taken care of with multiple guides. Very Safe. They also have rock climbing, horse back riding, kayaking, and more hot springs. Night tour with Jonathan we saw snakes, spiders, and poison dart frogs. Watch where you walk I tripped on a large rock. Bring sneakers! Distance from La Paz waterfall is 2 hours worth the drive. 30 min from a few other attractions 3.5 from Liberia Roads have been recently paved so we only found one road with massive pot holes. SUV rental takes care of this. Trip of a lifetime!!! The Volcano views are so much bigger than in the pictures. Traveled from Ft.Woth Texas, USA- Pura Vida!

The Springs Resort was truly breathtaking, and I will absolutely be back. We did the 2-day pass this time, and after experiencing everything, I will definitely be staying here next trip. From the moment we arrived, the customer service was excellent and made us feel well taken care of throughout our visit. The drinks were delicious, and the views alone are 100% worth it. There are so many different hot springs to choose from, each with its own vibe, which makes the experience even better. This resort exceeded our expectations and was easily one of the highlights of our trip.

The hotel is truly beautiful — the pools, gardens, and overall design are amazing. Breakfast is excellent, with great quality food, and the staff are all incredibly friendly. There are three accommodation blocks: two charming, older-style ones near the main building with spacious rooms and lovely terraces, and a newer block a bit farther away with a beautiful walkway and very large rooms that seem ideal for families. However, the only downside is that room allocation feels random. Families and honeymooning couples are mixed together across buildings and floors. Unfortunately, we had a family with young children staying in the room above us, and the noise started around 6 a.m. They could easily improve the guest experience by separating family rooms from couples’ rooms when assigning buildings. Overall, a wonderful stay — with just a bit more thoughtful room placement, it could be perfect.
