Everything is good but you have to try the crab cakes! Made like they should be with big pieces of lump crab. 3/16/23 I had a nice meal, shrimp dinner. Everything was good and the service was on point. I really love the hot yeast rolls with the honey butter they make. The gumbo is nice and rich. And the au gratin was very good and creamy. Love the scenery near the bayou and a great view from the window. Nice experience.

Awesome all around from reservations to bar to seating to service! Elizabeth was great!!Bartender was super nice and Food was superior!!! Passed up a lot of restaurants coming from Maurice but did not disappoint!!!! Crab boulettes are better than any others we have tried at multiple restaurants 😋

This is a quaint little restaurant with an inviting atmosphere and great menu options and wonderful staff. It looks like a repurposed building with a lot of history. All of the staff were welcoming and polite. The menu has the right balance of options while at the same time not being so big you don't know what to choose. We both had the ground rib eye filled with cheese and it was delicious, well seasons and a generous portion. The grilled veggies were very good but could have used a little more seasoning for my taste. It is on the river so I found the county view very relaxing. We will go back, no doubt. This would be a great spot to go with a few couples for a nice night out. (Guys - don't be fooled by the women's sign on the inside of the men's room door🤣😉).

Everything was amazing here. For an appetizer we had the catfish bites. Our main meals were the large crab cakes, large fried shrimp platter, and veggies. For dessert we tried both bread puddings and they were great. Our waitress was super friendly and very attentive. Thank you!

We had the catfish bites, catfish fingers? (They are like slabs...the meat is fresh & beautiful), fried mushrooms, fried crab fingers & the shrimp salad! We love this place. The owner greeted me as well and he was very kind. He thanked me for coming in. Probably my 10th time + coming here. The pictures are from my to-go order. Everything is fresh tasting and cooked to order. The atmosphere is very inviting as well. The staff is always pleasant and quick to help.

I've eaten the shrimp gumbo here for years, always very good. The restaurant shrimp or seafood gumbos in this Cajun area are pretty standardized in that all the best places like Pat's, Forest, Dupuy's, Fezzo's, Don's, & St. John offer nearly identical gumbos. Much better than anything in New Orleans ! Just try it, please. My fav's here are the stuffed shrimp, fried shrimp in corn flour, corn grits, & the small filet mignon. Others are stuffed potato & bread pudding. Occasionally, their daily specials will be very good. Caveats; Arrive very early for Saturday supper. Father Vidrine's 4:00 Mass celebrations @ nearby Saint Martin de Tours Church are very popular; all of the folks arrive en-masse for supper right afterwards at 5:00PM. Also, this Chef just doesn't do soft-shell crabs very well; strange, b/c his other crab dishes are great. Good, dependable restaurant toujours !

Great service from John our waiter. It was our first time to dine here. We came for lunch. My husband ordered the chef Craig's crab cake and I ordered the eggplant with crab cream sauce. Both were so delicious. We will return.

Everything was soooo good! Service was great, we had a party of 20+ and our server killed it. The shrimp dinner comes with so much stuff it's crazy, ordering anything else feels wrong. Unless, it's the chicken cappellini! My brother ordered it and let me try and wowwww, so simple yet so good! The sauce is just perfect. Everything was so flavorful, fresh, and delicious. Highly recommend this place!

Shrimp platter with corn grits was good minus the gumbo tasted a little bit like burnt roux this time. Service was good but food took a long time to come out but it was a Saturday. My mom got the fried catfish platter which was delicious and I'd probably go with that one next time. Overall nice restaurant.

We were out for our weekend drive, and decided to visit St. John restaurant. Nice area with a private parking lot, but especially liked the window seating, which was cozy with a family feel. We ordered our drinks, and was given a basket of warms rolls which were light and airy, and the cinnamon butter was a nice touch. The appetizer was the crab boulettes were great, filled with lump crab. We were off to a great start. Our entrees were the porterhouse pork chops, which was tender, and the peach honey glaze went very well, baked sweet potato was a good touch, and the grilled shrimp dish a bit salty however still tasted great rice or noodles would have offset this. The staff was very friendly and worked as a team. Our first meal in St Martinsville was all around great.

What a fantastic hidden cajun gem! Not sure why we just tried it for the first time but I'm so glad we did. This is some of the best cajun food you can find in the coolest building that's almost like a big wooden house. We shared the crab claws, I got the crab dinner and my wife got the shrimp pasta. Everything was delicious and to top it off the cocktails were great. The waitress was very nice and helpful with recommendations as well. 10/10 can't wait to go back.

Entering the restaurant was like going back to my childhood days. The building reminded me of my grandfathers old grocery store from the 1950's. The ambiance sets the tone for a great experience. Our waitress (I forgot her name) met us as we entered and allowed us time to look around and admire the interior. We were immediately presented with fresh baked bread and what looked like homemade butter on the side. The butter flavor had a familiar taste that we could not figure out, but we liked it! Our waitress explained that it was butter mixed with Steens Cane Syrup, what a simple combination that enhanced the bread. We enjoyed the bread rather than add an appetizer. For our main dishes, I had the Tropical Pork with Teriyaki sauce that included grilled pork tenderloin medallions, grilled onions and grilled pineapple with a light teriyaki sauce. I picked the grilled vegetables as my side item and they were so tender and grilled perfectly. When I mixed the vegetables with the teriyaki sauce, my palate was very pleased. My wife had the Chef Craig's Original jumbo lump crab cakes and they did not disappoint. She absolutely loves grilled crab cakes but she is very critical if they are full of fillers. This crab cake exceeded her expectations as she said it was near the top of all the crab cakes she has eaten. Very flavorful and full of genuine crab meat! She also had the grilled vegetables as her side item and was also pleased with the dish. No appetizer meant we had room for dessert and we made the correct choice as the Crème Brûlée was spot on excellent with strawberries, blueberry and whipped cream on top. We will certainly return and bring friends. There are so many other items on the menu that we want to experience. We can't stop raving about this restaurant and telling everyone about our experience.

We have eaten at St John's twice recently and both times we were served rice that was not cooked properly. It's hard and crunchy which and doesn't soften in the gumbo.

Awesome food! Walked in for early lunch and were immediately greeted by a friendly hostess, we were seated on a sunny front porch with a bayou view. Our waiter came shortly and we were able to get our drinks and some delicious house baked bread within a few minutes. My husband and I shared the crab platter which was just the right amount of food to share. He ordered an extra cup of chicken and sausage gumbo. Their roux is rich and dark, homemade and so acadiana. Was delicious. A local that was sitting near by told us to try the crab cakes so we put an order of crab cakes to take home for a snack later. We definitely would return for the gumbo and to try out other menu items. The restaurant is very clean, bathrooms are clean, all around a wonderful experience. Can't wait to return!

Nice to go to a restaurant with so many different items with crab meat. Service is really nice quick and attentive. Ambience is very rustic as the restaurant is in an old warehouse across the street from the Bayou

It's ok, nothing to write home about! Poor parking, poor service and over priced food! I've been there on 3 separate occasions and never been impressed!

So. My wife said let's go to this place and I'm glad we did !!! I've got to give this restaurant 5 stars because upon walking in, we were immediately greeted by the friendliest staff and was seated right away. The waiter, Ben, was phenomenal and was at our table recommending and taking our order. While we were eating that amazing bread, with the honey butter, the owner of the establishment was walking around talking to everyone. We really felt like family and not like just another customer. Now, let's talk about the food. For an app, we got the friend mushrooms. For dinner, I got the seafood platter and my wife got the Filet. I had to sneak a small bite of my wife's, perfectly cooked, Filet and OMG!!! probably one of the best steaks I've had the pleasure of eating. Not to mention that my platter was also cooked to utter perfection. Thumbs up to this place and we will definitely be back. SOON.

What a wonderful place! Food? Outstanding. Service? Outstanding. Victoria, our waiter, was charming and knowledgeable about the menu. I've had fried seafood that was good before, but the fries were usually soggy. St John? Even the fries were crispy and tasty! If you don't try this place, you are missing a wonderful experience.

We were referred here by locals & they did NOT disappoint! Three words.. Crawfish egg rolls!!!!! Best egg rolls I've ever had.. full of flavor, stuffed with crawfish and beautifully cheesy.. Mandatory appetizer! The seafood platter was big.. catfish, oysters, crab claws, fried shrimp, stuffed shrimp, stuffed crab, crab bouille (?)(fried crab cake ball) & bakes potato for my side.. Also, side salad & bread. Frog leg comes with the platter but I added the crab cake ball instead. Whole meal was fantastic & a great amount for a little cost. I'm from SF, the seafood platter would be an easy $50 alone.. but here INCLUDING alcoholic drinks, $60!!! Elizabeth was our waitress & she was terrific! They're greeeaaaat!! (Tony the Tiger voice)

Good service - good food. When you get the chance, stop by. Everything we had was excellent and again good service for a nice change.

Tilapia was good and the staff was very kind. I ordered a Manhattan and it was a bit too "sugary" for my taste. Also, of the two TVs at the bar, one of them wasn't working properly - also the exposed wires from the TV didn't help the ambiance. However, overall, this has to be one of the best places in St. Martinville.

Love this place!!! The service is always very helpful and kind but a little slow around rush hour (dinner time esp) but still worth the wait. They keep it a little cool inside so bring a jacket! The food is great also. It reminds me of the classic cajun foods i grew up with. The gumbo and etouffee wasnt my favorite but you can never judge those two foods especially because everyone makes it different down here.

The food was great! The atmosphere was great. Old time and country. Very fitting for the menu. Location is kinda hidden and parking isn't amazing but it's not an issue. We had chicken capellini and fish bites with a side of potato and stuffed potato. We also had fried mushrooms as an appetizer 10/10.

Such a beautiful place. This restaurant is worth a visit just for its ambience. The food is good, some things better than others, service is pretty good but the atmosphere is awesome. I recently brought my teenage daughter and my 9 year old son here for a night out. I chose St. John because my son was craving alligator and previous visits have taught me that this is where I find the best gator. That alligator was PERFECT. The crawfish egg rolls were also good. My daughter ordered the chicken capellini and that is what I wished I had gotten. Is was very tasty. However I ordered the chicken Pontchartrain and it was not so good. The chicken itself was cut obviously a breast cut in half. It was cut thin therefore came out very dry. They must prep the chicken for all their dishes the same. It does not work on this dish. I think the sauce is what saved it on the pasta for the capellini. The location is perfect for a nice stroll along the bayou after a heavy meal. We went at dusk so we really got to enjoy the twinkle lights across the way. Very nice place to go.

10 out of 10. Always amazing food. Farm to table style cooking. This place never fails to express me. This is a very good representation of what Cajun food is all about. Down home cooked meals done with love. The stakes are among the best I have ever had. There is always a little wait because they are busy every night. Bit the service keeps the line moving fast. The banana drink was to die for. Taste like banana cream pie. Lastly do you self a favor and get the crab cake. It is sinful good .

Revisited about a year later for my aunt's bday - definitely better this time around. We came during the lunch hour and you cannot beat a window seat overlooking the bayou! I had the shrimp dinner which came with shrimp gumbo, salad, fried, stuffed and sautéed shrimp and shrimp au gratin. I was very pleased with my meal. Only thing is, the sautéed shrimp was over-cooked! This is still a really nice place to explore small town Cajun cuisine!

My husband and I stopped by for a little Sunday date. The hostess sat us on the porch. My husband ordered the Swamp platter with a garden salad and roasted corn grits and I ordered the seafood platter with a garden salad and baked potato. The food was delicious and the waitress was amazing. Will be returning I. The near future.

Second time eating there. First time was excellent. Not a busy time so everything was spot on. Tonight ordered a seafood platter and unfortunately everything was so over fried it was crunchy. I'm sure it's because they were so busy but they should keep an eye on that. Other than that great people and place.

Upon walking in we were greeted by a man I assumed is the owner. He was very warm and inviting. After we were seated our server came in a timely manner and took our drink order. I informed her I was on keto and before I could ask for suggestions she said she didn't know anything about that. Fair enough I thought, so I just ordered a vodka soda which I enjoyed. My significant other ordered a margarita which he said had an odd "frothy" texture but he drank it anyway. He is not a picky person when it comes to food and we were in good spirits as we were celebrating our Valentine's Day dinner early. Our food took a bit as the server informed us they had just finished getting the food out for a large party. We were patient though. About 10 minutes later our server returned to inform us that they were out of the grilled veggies we had both ordered as our side as well as pretty much every other veggie I inquired about. This was really disappointing for me due to my diet restriction. I had actually looked at the menu beforehand to make sure I would be able to enjoy my meal before deciding upon going to this restaurant for our date. She then offered to put grilled mushroom on my steak which excited me so much that I asked if I could just get a bit extra and have that as my side. She said that she didn't think the kitchen would do that so I reluctantly decided to just get another salad. My boyfriend ordered the crawfish dinner and his gumbo came out first and he was not impressed. He is by no means a foodie and has a very simple palate so I was really surprised to hear him say he thinks there is too much file in the gumbo and his crawfish were rubbery. My steak and the rest of his meal came out a little after. The flavor my steak and the temperature of my steak was good however for the $38 price, I did not expect it to be so tough and hard to cut. My boyfriend loves etouffee and he didn't enjoy it or anything else on his plate. His main complaint seemed to be that the crawfish were rubbery. Anywho we did enjoy our time together but for the price that we paid, the quality just did not reflect. Needless to say, unfortunately we won't be dining here again.

Alligators and frog legs actually do taste like chicken. Frog legs are like roasted chicken and alligators are fried chicken. The servers were friendly and polite and our food came at a decent pace. The restaurant was very clean and organized. Definitely would recommend for anyone interested in Cajun food.

Dinner tonight was great! Catfish Ponchatrain was very good. Shrimp gumbo was served hot and seasoned just right. Husband enjoyed his Grilled Shrimp. Even better was the service. Thanks Victoria!

The first time I took friends there a year ago we ordered the seafood platter and everything, from the quality and consistency of the food was excellent!! Our server was a rockstar!!

As a docent at the nearby local museum, it's one of the top businesses I recommend to visitors and tourists. Personally, I wouldn't recommend the take-out option (the food loses it's value there) the magic is in the dine-in experience. First of all, you have a variety of authentic Cajun recipes, and you know it is if most of the clientele is local Cajuns. 2nd, the building is considered historic - it was originally an ice warehouse before refrigeration existed. The view of the Bayou Teche is perfect, and if you're staying at the local B&B, chances are you may be able next door. Did I mention that guestsAcadiana will be personally greeted by the owner? I'm not overly social myself, but even I appreciate his table-side chats.

Incredible food, great service. Anything you eat here is perfection, from the freshest salads to the best tasting cup of coffee, every entree is on point, out of this world steaks, great drinks and appetizers are to die for. I love how you can come in as you are, or you can dress up for a date night and the atmosphere is perfect for either. Friendly faces when you walk in guarantee you'll want to keep coming back. I've eaten here by myself, with my hubby for date nights, with family, for work, and have stopped by many times for takeout. This place tops my list of favorite restaurants. Never a miss, ALWAYS a hit!

Went to lunch here because of the reviews. This is what I experienced. Location: Very nice on Bayou Teche. Building exterior and interior: Nice, quirky fun style. Workers: Very nice and helpful. Ordering: I ordered the $14.99 crab cake meal from the lunch menu. I asked what came with it and was told, fries or baked potato. I ordered the fries. I thought ok, for $14.99 I hope it's worth it. I was offered salad and told it would be extra. I opted out because for $14.99 I should not have to pay extra for little house salad. Then I noticed that I was not given any crackers or bread that is normally served in restaurants. Meal: When the server put my plate down in front of me I laughed out loud. That was the most pitiful looking fries and crab cake I've ever seen. If you can see your plate through the fries, there are not enough fries on your plate. The Fries, were warm and good. The Crab Cake that was supposed to be the star of the plate was room temperature. The inside was mushy and tasted like bread cubes that had been soaked in cream of mushroom soup. I was hesitant to eat it wondering if it was even cooked properly, but I was hungry. Then half way though my skimpy $14.99 meal, I was brought one little bread and it was so light I thought it must not be cooked. I am going to try and post the picture I took of the plate before I started eating.

Food us great but overpriced. Great atmosphere, service may seem on the slower side but the food is always hot.
