Elizabeth Bruenig’s Grub Street Diet

"An out-of-the-way diner that delivers exceptional value and surprisingly refined seafood: a Provençal-style seafood soup served in a generous quart for about $10, brimming with scallops, shrimp, mussels, and calamari (with tender scallops and a cilantro finish); the menu also includes solid diner classics like a Reuben." - Rachel Sugar

Came to this cool, diner on Harvard Avenue in Stamford for Sunday brunch as a party of 7 and was seated after a 15-minute wait. This place has a nice, family-friendly, old-school vibe that really works well. Their menu is like a book - it's filled with a lot of choices to suit every taste and appetite. It's also expansively huge inside - there are plenty of tables, seats and counter seats too. Prices are very reasonable and the food was all great (I had the Eggs Benedict). Friendly staff and overall, a great experience. Bonus: they had Christmas decorations up when we dined, and it made the place look beautiful! Highly recommended!

The Stamford Diner is much nicer inside than it looks from the outside. It’s bigger, clean and well lit. We were greeted right away and told it would be a five minute wait, but it ended up being only two which was great. It was packed and we were seated in the back area. Our server Armando was the highlight. Friendly, patient and genuinely helpful, especially with their big menu since it was our first visit. For food, I had the steak and scrambled eggs with American cheese, home fries and buttered rye toast. I also ordered a passion fruit mimosa and an espresso martini. Drinks were a miss. The martini was strong but not made well, and the mimosa wasn’t great either. The steak was cooked correctly at medium, but it had no flavor and was surprisingly fatty. The rye toast was hard and tasted old. The home fries and scrambled eggs carried the plate. She had the old fashioned French toast, bacon and a side of fries. French toast and bacon were solid. She didn’t like the fries, though I thought they were fine. Overall, it wasn’t terrible, but there’s work to do before this becomes a go to breakfast spot.

Google
Classic diner done right. The food came out very quickly, which was a nice surprise, and everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. The burgers were juicy and flavorful, and the salad was perfectly dressed—light but balanced, letting the ingredients shine. Overall, very solid food and efficient service. A great spot when you want something reliable and satisfying.

Google
We order so much from them for delivery but oddly never been to the restaurant. Food is hearty, homey, and well made. They never skimp on quality and price everything reasonable vs neighboring options. Would recommend their turkey mash potato broccoli option and also their salads which are very fresh generally. They make better food than most dressy type of restaurants.

The diner has some great decor, the menu had so many choices. Their iced coffee was really delicious. I got the california breakfast burrito and it was really tasty. The service was great and our waiter was super friendly.

Google
Atmosphere is great. Food is usual food in America - ok, but nothing special. Benedict sauce and onion soup was good, but portion sizes could have been larger. Service added 6 cents instead of 0 on the final check. So cheap!

Google
It was a great experience. You will be quite pleased with the serving portions and Diane our server and the Corporate Manager Laura O'Brien gave us a fabulous gift bag upon leaving! Definitely worth stopping by for an unexpected treat and amazing service! ✨✨✨✨✨

Google
Nice selections on the kids menu and the regular menu is huge! So many choices! Plenty of parking and plenty of tables and counter space for dining! All four of us (2 adults and 2 children) really enjoyed our meal. The staff was friendly, food was 😃 great!

Yelp
The best French onion soup and the best chicken parm ever!! Service was outstanding! Food was out quick and nice and hot!

Yelp
I was so excited to come here because my sister showed me the menu and I saw a cake pop milkshake. I eagerly ordered the cake pop milkshake, and to my surprise, I was left with a vanilla lollipop milkshake. If the owners of this place are seeing this, I suggest staying true to your menu. Otherwise the food was great!

Yelp
First time coming here, they put up very nice Christmas decoration. Service is nice and seating are comfortable. Shrimp Alredo comes with mild tasty sauce, bread was toasted with butter i like that they are not giving those white bread. Seafood pasta (spicy) flavorful and all the seafood flavor went into the sauce, fresh seafood and refreshing sauce with a kick of pepper. Skirt steak was medium rare pink inside, Brown rice was best one the chef knows how to make good brown rice, it's not soaky and crunchy in every bite, I'm surprised with those taro chips they add. Chicken wings was crispy outside, juicy inside . The garlic Parmesan tends to be salty so i asked for buffalo sauce. I'll go for buffalo next time. Looking forward to come back try some breakfast items.

Yelp
Dear Owner of Stamford Diner, I'm addressing this to you directly, as it appears that management has allowed poor customer service to continue. My family has been coming to this diner for many years, and over time we've noticed the service gradually declining. We used to visit every Tuesday for the kids' show and always enjoyed the atmosphere. On two recent occasions, we were seated and ended up leaving before ordering. We had requested a booth, but the hostess seated us elsewhere despite several being open. The waiter placed water on the table without a greeting and walked away, then returned a few minutes later and seemed annoyed when we asked for a little more time. Overall, it left us with the feeling that we weren't welcome, and that the focus was more on turnover than on customer experience. With the menu prices now much higher, we wouldn't mind paying if the service matched the cost. Unfortunately, we've decided not to return. I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, but after two visits with the same experience, I feel it's important to share this so others know what to expect before spending their time and money.

Yelp
Mariana is amazing, whenever you stop by ask for Mariana!!! I had the tornado waffle with Oreo stuffing and vanilla ice cream and ny skirt steak with egg over easy. It was gooooood. I listened to jazz and big band while I ate. Ambiance calm I went around 9am. So yea love it and the service was top tier!

Yelp
I have always seen this restaurant from the highway and from the main street. I never go because diners are typically known for tired food and the bare minimum of style of cooking. With that being said this food here in service and the look of the Diner, it should not be called the diner. This place should be called a restaurant. It is beautiful in here as far as the renovations went years ago the decoration, the decor the seating everything is really good here. This is my second time here And I'm surprised so many people are inside. I never see too many cars that means a lot of people walk here or come from the hotel this place will see me DAILY; in the morning now.... I have a home. I love the service here. The people here are nice. It's not like it was years ago 2025 years ago. Seating and greeting Ambience Server Food Prices

Yelp
Very expensive and the kitchen is not flexible with orders. Come on really? Your a bleeping diner. Food is at best meh.

Yelp
We had an outstanding experience for the second time thanks to our waiter Ramon. He is incredibly knowledgeable, well-spoken. His professionalism and attention to detail truly stood out. He is attentive, friendly, and genuinely cared about making sure we had a great experience. The level of customer service we received by Ramon is always memorable, and we felt very well taken care of from start to end.

Yelp
Came here with a small group (six of us) after my friends' elopement, which made for a memorable post-wedding meal. The experience started off a little weird--when we walked in, the host asked to see my friend's wedding ring, I guess as "proof" of the marriage? Not sure what that was about, but we laughed it off and moved on. Service was solid--our waiter was friendly, and the food came out on time without any issues. The menu has all the classic diner staples, and while everything was decent, nothing particularly stood out. The ambiance is exactly what you'd expect from a classic American diner. That said, prices are on the higher side (a shake is $17.99!), so don't come expecting a budget-friendly meal. Overall, a good spot for a casual meal with friends, minus the odd welcome at the door.

Yelp
With some trepidation we ordered the Thanksgiving Dinner for 12 to go instead of cooking. While it was pricey, I would absolutely do it again, with some adjustments. With few exceptions, everything was EXCELLENT! We were 6 people and I wanted all to leave with leftovers. They all did. The turkey was cooked perfectly and was moist and delicious. While everything was picked up "warm" they provided instructions how to heat it up if I wasn't immediately serving it. It reheated well The mashed potatoes, yams, corn bread stuffing Cranberry/orange and gravy were EXCELLENT. The pumpkin pie and apple crisp were EXCELLENT as was the loaf of whole grain bread. The salad was fresh and plentiful! Very little went on thanksgiving but we ate it for three days following There were several spots that missed the mark. The classic stuffing was awful, it had the consistency of soup, the roasted vegetables were just "fair" and the focaccia was dry. My family and I are mashed potato freaks so I did have to make mashed potatoes to ensure there was enough. I also made my own classic stuffing. I had ingredients for both on hand for "just in case". I also ordered an extra gravy because who doesn't love an extra gravy. If (When) I do this again I would see if I am able to make the following adjustments. I would order more mashed potatoes, drop the classic stuffing and make my own, stick with two gravy's, drop the focaccia and roasted vegetables, and possibly the salad While tasty, only two of us actually ate the salad. As my family said, it only gets in the way of the main event. The folks at the Stamford Diner are always top notch, the food was ready right on time, and they rolled it out to my car. All in all, a great feast worth the money

Yelp
The food looks amazing and tastes amazing too !! It makes sense as to why they were shown on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show !

Yelp
Excellent diner, I was surprised and can't believe how good the side salad, matzo ball soup and dessert was. The beer was super cold. Excellent diner. (Attached to a horrible hotel)

Yelp
Food was good for a diner, and portions were large. I ordered the crusted chicken, which I enjoyed. 2 fairly large pieces of crusted chicken on a bed of rice, with some veggies. Ample parking. Service wasn't the best. At first the waitress delivered me someone else's food (a chicken pasta). I told her that I didn't order that and she basically accused me of ordering it. The dish looked decent so I just accepted it. But at the end she realized that she made a mistake when there was an excess crusted chicken plate, and one guy on the other side of the table was missing his chicken pasta. She had a foolish look on her face, although no acknowledgement of her error. Knocking it down to 3 stars fro this whole episode.

Yelp
The perfect grilled cheese (swiss) sandwich. Server was polite and attentiv. I had 4 Pepsi refills and he just kept bringing them. Wife enjoyed her fish & chips, although she is just a bit cranky. Highly recommend this restuarant/dinner

Yelp
The diner is very large with plenty of parking. It has a bar & bakery section with delicious looking desserts. We stopped for a quick lunch . The food was delicious and potions were very generous. The restaurant was clean. Combination of Booths & tables. Server was very friendly.

Yelp
Went for Brunch with my son and father in law and it never disappoints!! Nothing like it and the portions are amazing! they have great service and you never have to worry about being underserved because all the waiters are great. the food is always delightful and delicious. Bring your big boy/girl appetite! I love how they handle having big crowds without a hitch. The burger is beyond juicy and oozing with flavor just go do it and stop counting calories!! Just enjoy yourself!! Tell them I sent ya!

Yelp
The service was great! We noticed right away that they were careful how they placed everything - no reaching across anybody. The food all came out together and was the right temperature (some of us got dinners and some of us got salads). The soup of the day (clam chowder) was delicious, but significantly smaller than the matzoh ball soup - both came with dinner. The French fries were good, but too crispy for my taste. The ice tea tasted fresh and they refilled it. I'm sorry we didn't save room for the amazing looking desserts. The restaurant and bathroom were both very clean. This place was once on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. They have the episode playing on a loop on a TV in the dining area. It was fun to watch. This place is exactly what I'm looking for when I go to a dinner.

Yelp
So, this place is famous due to Guy Fieri. That should set your standards somewhat: this place is definitely an American sort of eatery, very straightforward and tasty, very traditional, lots of food. The kind of place that American grandparents like. The price is a bit higher than you might find at a traditional diner due to the fame, but that's really the only difference between this place and a relatively nice NYC-style diner. I liked everything I had here, and I really don't understand the complaints from other patrons. This is not a Michelin star place - what you order is exactly what you get, no unnecessary fanciness - but you get a LOT of food, and it's pretty tasty. You could easily bring kids here and they'd be totally happy.

Linda A.

Yelp
Service was excellent, very attentive without being too much. Food was outstanding!! I ordered Matzo ball soup (at Guy Fueri's recommendation) for the very first time, it was good but I wish I had ordered French Onion soup like my husband as it was sooo much more flavorful. He said it was hands down the BEST he's ever had. We decided to share the Chicken Parm and it's a good thing we did because the half portion we both had was a LOT and we ended up taking our remaining halves home. So come hungry and you will definitely NOT be disappointed!!
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
I ordered a cup of matzoh ball soup, and a ham and cheese omelet, French fries and a side of sausage. The omelet was brought out while I was still eating the soup. The omelet was greasy and had an awful aftertaste. And the sausage was dry on the inside and overcooked but somehow covered in grease on the outside. My toast was dry; no butter and no jelly. The celebrated matzoh ball soup was bland. I had to add salt and pepper for it to have any flavor. My wife enjoyed her western omelet. However, they brought her food out while she had just started her guac and stale chips. Her unsweetened iced tea was extremely strong. Our waiter rushed all the food out despite it being relatively empty for a Saturday night. And you think he'd check on us once for me to voice all this? Nope. One and done for me.

Patricia M.

Yelp
From the initial friendly greeting, to the great service by our waitress, Norma, we had a thoroughly wonderful meal. The matzah ball soup is the best I've ever had! Perfectly cooked cheeseburger, with great home made Cole slaw; chicken wrap was hearty and delicious; and bbq chicken quesadilla was superb. And then the ending to our meal- the chocolate caramel mousse cake- to die for!! Portions were large and we took home enough for another meal! The great deli mid century decor is also worth the visit! Love this place!!

Yelp
The Stamford Diner has a cute, eye-catching sign and looked like a place to get a classic breakfast. But the food and service fell a little short. The service was distracted and the omelette I got was wayyy overcooked. I liked the home style potatoes and the latte I had. So it was a very mixed bag.

Yelp
The Stamford Diner is by far my favorite restaurant. My wife and I have been going their for at least once a week for decades. The food is Great and is equally matched by the service and the fun atmosphere. It is a great date night place, or to meet up with friends or just go and relax. Their take out is really good too. Laura, and Uri and everyone else are really nice. I highly recommend the chocolate pot de crème for desert. They also do really good steaks.

Yelp
I can't stop thinking about how great my chicken marsala the perfect amount of sauce, and the chicken was so tender.

Yelp
This restaurant was featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. The outside of the restaurant is really cool (has a large coffee cup!) The parking lot was really crowded for a Thursday morning and I was sure we would have to wait, but thankfully, we were seated right away (since the diner is large and has a lot of seating). We were seated in a nice secluded booth close to the bar. I ordered a Pineapple Juice and the Banana Walnut Pancakes. They were absolutely delicious!!! It was so filling, I couldn't eat the entire thing (only half). The bathrooms were a little odd, but the music was piped in the speaker which was nice. Our waiter was really attentive and friendly which was awesome.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the breakfast food here. I gotta really come back and try lunch or dinner. This is one well-run machine - service is better than any diner I've ever seen. It's a pretty big place and the tables are great for some privacy. A favorite!
google avatar

Yelp
The Stamford diner is always a good choice! It is clean and the staff is friendly and efficient. They have a decent brewed coffee ( when I say decent I mean WAAAAAY better than typical diner coffee). They have traditional menu with some nice unique additions

Yelp
We walked in on a Sunday at 1pm and the place was jumpin. The parking lot was packed and we thought it would be a long wait but instead we were seated immediately! The restaurant is big and open so the noise level is very high- don't expect to have an intimate conversation. The food is so good though that you will be too busy chewing to talk. Everything we ordered was delicious

Yelp

Yelp
The service at the bar was horrendous. The bartender didn't know how to make a margarita and a friend and I tried it, it was so bad I couldn't drink it. He insisted I pay fort the drink anyway and was extremely rude and aggressive. My friend talked to the manager, and they there argued with us over the drink and made us pay for the one he threw out and the remake. I honestly never witnessed such rudeness and poor customer service. The bartender was actually going out of his way to be rude, it was shocking. Sadly this experience has left me leaving this review. If I could leave zero stars I would

Yelp
Picked The Stamford Diner from Yelp review and it was A+. I had no idea that was featured on Guy Fieri's Diner, Drive In's, & Dives. That was a treat and I can see why it was featured. The diner was bustling for the Saturday morning brunch hours. We had breakfast, but you can have anything your heart desires basically. If you can't find anything here, you're a picky eater. There is something for everyone. My Turkey&egg white omelette was perfect with the side of house potatoes and rye buttered toast. The caramel macchiato was delish too. Looking forward to visit again when in Stamford, gotta try the Cannoli French Toast that was calling my name next time.

Cortland B.

Yelp
The initial impression was positive but it failed to live up to that impression. Also this place seems to me, massively overpriced. $42 for 1 tea, a Western omelet, and a Mexican Omelet. When you first enter, you are greeted with multiple notices about how they were featured on some Food Network show about diners and dives. The decor is colorful and the place looks shiny and clean. Everything after that is mediocre at best. When we visited there were few customers - they did not appear to be particularly busy. The staff were nice and polite but not particularly engaging or doing anything that stands out in a positive or negative way. Typical for a diner. The seating looked comfy and in good condition but was in reality a typical hard bench with minimal cushioning - minimal enough that you probably would not notice if it wasn't there. Less comfortable actually than in many other diner's I've been in. The service had only one real negative. My daughter was asked what cheese she would like in her Western Omelet and was given several choices. What wasn't disclosed is a $1 surcharge for cheese. A surcharge for cheese .... on an omelet (in fairness it does say that in the menu in small print but the waitress should have mentioned it since she offered it). Beyond that, the service was fine. It did not stand out in any positive or negative way. With the exception of the chili on my Mexican omelet, our food seemed to be unseasoned and bland. It tasted ok with some salt. It wasn't particularly bad, but I couldn't call it good either. The portion size was good though. Finally, as mentioned at the start, this place was *expensive*. That price did not reflect the value of what we received in any way - ambiance, service, food taste. We won't be returning.

Yelp
Went here for the 1st time with my family as a large party of 11 on Sunday October 20th 2024. We entered the restaurant, told our name to the host, and had to wait a while for them to set up a table for us, and for some reason they wanted the whole party there to sit us. When about half our party arrived, we were sat quickly. While we were waiting, we noticed that they had lots of desserts like carrot cake, red velvet cake, rice pudding, chocolate cake, and various other delicious looking desserts! It is a busy diner, and not that easy to find parking, but we drove around until we found a spot. This restaurant was also featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, drive ins, and dives tv show. we saw a banner outside the restaurant. Restaurant gets really busy, but they do have a lot of tables, and a big restaurant. Server was also very nice and patient with us. Could have checked on us more, but that can be hard to do if busy. I started with water and chocolate milk, and got waters for the table. i believe someone also had orange juice. Also coffees. For breakfast, i decided on the Oreo pancakes, a couple of people got the spinach omlet which came with potatoes, someone ordered french fries, got toast, and most of us got omelets. Food also came at a decent time, and pretty much all at once for the same table. Oreo pancakes were very good, only thing was is that I prefer my toppings inside the pancake, and this was mostly on top of the pancakes. Still was delicious and i enjoyed it! Even the potatoes were good, as i stole one from my dad. Another favorite was the omelet which my aunt said was flavorful and enjoyable. Restrooms were also very clean. We paid via credit card and left a cash tip. Would definitely come again if we were in the area!

Yelp
To call this place a "diner" is an understatement. While the dress code is casual, everything about this place is upscale. It's a very large restaurant with comfortable and stylish booths. The waiters all wear black dress slacks and white button ups. Staff is friendly and efficient. The menu is extensive, and the food is absolutely amazing! Everything tastes like it was made fresh on premises that day. You definitely get your money's worth for the portions! We got an appetizer and meals. We wanted to get dessert because everything in the display case looked incredible, but we were just too full. There is also a full bar (with signature cocktails) and ice cream/milkshakes available. Honestly, this place seems to have everything you could ever want. I HIGHLY recommend this place if you're in the area.

Amy S.

Yelp
This diner was featured on "Diners, Drive Ins and Dives." It's been refurbished and leans into its retro image. I had 2 scrambled eggs, whole grain toast and bacon. My husband had oatmeal. Service was quick, the diner was very clean and our food was good.

Yelp
Best diner I've been to in years - and I'm from Jersey! Pepe was outstanding- Could not have been more friendly or attentive. Menu options are staggering. Can't wait to try them out for breakfast!

Yelp
Came for breakfast with my brother. Neither of us had ever been here before. What an amazing discovery! Absolutely delicious. We both got the onion ring hasher. If you like corned beef hash and onion rings, you will love this dish. We will come back here from Long Island just to have breakfast

Yelp
Love this place. The specials are always a hit and I've never been disappointed by any of them. Osmar and Laura the Managers ensure that customers receive the best service and food. The newest server, Freddy is awesome. Always checks in to ensure the perfect dining experience and that my wine glass never runs empty

Yelp
Great place to eat!! I've been here many times. The parking lot always looks full, but there are plenty of seats inside -- big tables, little tables, big booths, little booths, countertop, and bar. I've never had to wait more than a couple of minutes to be seated. Staff is friendly and attentive. Prices are reasonable. The menu has a big variety -- burgers, paninis, wraps, quesadillas, hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, specialty sandwiches, full plate dinners, pasta dishes, seafood, steaks, salads, soups, etc. Plus all sorts of breakfast items -- omelettes, pancakes, French toast, Benedict's, and sides. The food is excellent quality. There's something for everyone. They've even been featured on a couple of FoodTV shows. If you can't find something you like, you're a giant pain in the butt. You should just stay home and eat your socks.

Yelp
I ordered dinner from the Stamford diner via a delivery app. I ordered the chicken sandwich with a side salad, and the mozzarella sticks. I requested an oil and vinegar dressing, which was excellent. The salad was fresh and delicious. The chicken sandwich was neither. The chicken sandwich was described as coming with tomatoes and a honey mustard sauce. The chicken itself was cubed, and smothered in a mayonnaise and honey mustard mixture with diced tomatoes mixed in. I happen to dislike anything more than a little dollop of mayo, so I was greatly disappointed in this chicken salad of sorts on a bun. Needless to say, it was a mess, and almost impossible to eat with my hands. (Yeah, I ate it because I'd been traveling all day, hadn't eaten, and hate wasting food more than I despise mayonnaise.) The mozzarella sticks were cold, and under seasoned. My hotel was within walking distance of the diner (I am disabled so I don't walk that far), so the temperature of the mozzarella sticks is inexcusable. I've gotten better seasoned mozzarella sticks from fast food chains. The dipping sauce, their signature marinara, was actually pretty damned good which made me regret not ordering their pasta and red sauce dishes. Later on that night, I had wave after wave of nausea hit me while I was attempting to sleep. Seeing as this meal was the only thing I'd eaten that day other than the almonds and cookies on the plane it's safe to assume that something I'd eaten from the Stamford Diner made me unwell.

Yelp
This is not just any diner! Like most diners, it has a huge menu yet unlike most, this diner does everything perfectly. From breakfast to paninis to soups, the food always hits the spot. The wait time can get very long but the sitting area is extremely large and the staff works as efficiently as they can. The true diner feel can be found here with the big booths and dessert counter.

Yelp
I've heard so much about this place and i finally decided to try. I am sorry to say I didn't have the best experience. My waitress didn't speak much English so it was hard to communicate. I ordered a burger and fries the burger was originally brought out to the table with a big block of cheese on it not melted . I asked for the cheese to be melted it was brought back burnt. The fries were cold upon arrival to the table. I ordered a virgin Pina coolata milkshake for desert and it was not good at all.
