The Stand – Scottsdale, Arizona - Gastro Obscura

"According to some sources, frybread was a result of the “Long Walk” in 1864, in which the United States government forced Navajo peoples living in modern-day Arizona to march 300 miles to eastern New Mexico. Unable to feed themselves in unfamiliar terrain, the Navajo starved until the government shipped rations of flour, salt, and lard—the primary ingredients in frybread. While it’s simply salted dough fried in oil, frybread today occupies a place of great—if not, complicated—significance in indigenous food culture, one you can taste for yourself at a roadside eatery just outside of Scottsdale. The Stand places frybread at the heart of its menu. This handmade stand constructed from arrowroot and cactus ribs serves rich, homemade toppings on frybread that’s always made to order. Visitors can select from red chili, green chili, or “Christmas-style”—a combination of both—as well as “Indian tacos” (beans, hamburger meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onions), bean & cheese tacos, or menudo (beef tripe). On the sweet side, The Stand offers frybread topped with honey and powdered sugar as well as a colorful strawberry jello poke cake (a fluffy sponge cake with swirls of strawberry jello and whipped cream). Located within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, this quaint eatery has a grassroots following among those living on the reservation as well as Phoenix-area eaters in-the-know. On a given day, other local vendors may be selling lemonade, popcorn, blankets, or jewelry from neighboring stands. In keeping with the rustic theme, The Stand is cash-only and offers no bathroom on the premises. The only “seats” to speak of are stumps placed in the shade of a nearby tree, but diners are invited to bring their own seating if they wish. None" - joeypesto, lukefater

We’ve been here a few times and this place never disappoints. If you’re wanting authentic Indian fry bread this is the best place to get it in the Phoenix area. My wife had to stand combo which has hamburger and I had the red and green chili combo. These things are big, heavy and delicious.

Flew in from Htown Texas to buy a Corvette and stayed for the frybread, it was delicious! The green chili was just right for me as I like spicy food, but I can see how others couldn't take the heat. The meat was super tender like butter and full of flavor! If I'm ever in this area again this is going to be a must-stop for sure!

I’m sorry to say I’ve had this place bookmarked since 2016 and never been but it’s sooo good. Got the combo fry bread taco with everything on it and another taco he just started making again after 5 years… all I can say is hustle on over and make sure you have cash. You get sooo much food and it’s extremely flavorful. Also the owner is extremely nice and I prefer to support local businesses/people. He also makes his dough at 5am!

This was a fun stop to try something new. This place is more of a shanty shack. For a Friday afternoon, there was no line but steady customers. It was about 99 degrees out, I had seen other reviews talk about extra hot sauce. I asked the employee, he got a fresh one out of the fridge. Both the chili's were great. The green one was a tad spicier. Be really hungry if you think you are going to eat one by yourself.

Fresh Flavors & Community Vibes at The Stand on Salt River First Impressions Rolling up to The Stand on the Salt River Reservation feels like stumbling onto a hidden gem. Part food stop, part community market, and 100% worth the detour. It’s casual, welcoming, and buzzing with local pride. Atmosphere & Vibe It’s more than just a food stand, it’s a mini cultural experience. Alongside the food vendors, there were pop-ups with fresh fruit, handmade jewelry, and bakery treats (shoutout to @a_and_abakes on Instagram for those goodies). There was even a pickle slush stand keeping things fun and funky. What I Tried We went all in with the Red Chili Combo Taco, the Green Chili Combo, and a classic Plain Fry Bread with powdered sugar. Everything was made fresh to order, served up hot, and packed with flavor. The chili had depth, the fry bread was crisp and chewy in all the right ways, and the sweet finish was the perfect touch. Service & Experience Quick, kind, and no-frills. The team was working efficiently, keeping the line moving without making anyone feel rushed. You could tell they cared about the food and the people; exactly the kind of energy you want when supporting local. Pro Tips or Heads-Up Bring cash just in case, some of the market stands may not take cards. And come hungry, the portions are generous, and you’ll want to try more than one thing. The vibe is super family-friendly and relaxed, so take your time and enjoy. Seating is somewhat limited so cozy is the vibe! Final Verdict The Stand is more than just a great place to grab a bite, it’s a celebration of local flavor and culture. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s a delicious, feel-good stop you won’t regret. ⸻ #SupportLocalAZ #SaltRiverEats #FryBreadFinds

🌵🌮The Stand Location: 3996 N Alma School Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85256 Type: Roadside Eatery Cuisine: Native American, Southwestern Known For: Navajo tacos, frybread, menudo, homemade desserts The Stand is a roadside taco stand in rural North Scottsdale, built with a tarped outdoor kitchen that adds rustic charm and authenticity. Known for serving traditional Native American frybread tacos—also called Navajo tacos—this cash-only spot is a local gem within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. I’ve been reading about this Navajo taco stand tucked along a dusty road, and The Stand did not disappoint. The character of the tarped outdoor kitchen just made every bite taste better. Portions were massive—our tacos easily became two meals. A Navajo taco is basically taco heaven: fluffy frybread topped with beans, meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream. Magical. When I’m back in Scottsdale, I’m definitely stopping again. Just don’t forget to bring cash! #NavajoTaco #TheStandAZ #FrybreadLove #RoadsideEats #ScottsdaleFoodie #NativeAmericanCuisine #TacoHeaven

Wow, the food here is incredible. I came here straight from the airport to make sure I tried this spot and it was so worth it! Got the stand combo taco (comes with red & green chili). Tender meat, a substantial portion size, and the sauces were so flavorful with a slight kick! The outdoor seating is comfy and homey, and I loved the old timey music they played. There are other vendors around that you can browse and last but not least incredibly friendly, kind, and welcoming staff! I will absolutely be back!
