New York Itinerary: What to Do and See in 5 Days in NYC in 2025

"I recommend taking the early ferry from Battery Park to see the Statue of Liberty up close—she’s as big as you imagine—and to spend time on Ellis Island, which I think is the real highlight thanks to its powerful exhibits about the immigrant experience (you can even find my family’s name on the wall). The ferry ticket costs $24 USD, and if the line is too long the free Staten Island ferry is a faster, cheaper alternative for photos of the statue and harbor, though you won’t get as close." - Matthew Kepnes

The Best Statue of Liberty Tour in New York City in 2025

"On the Take Walks Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island tour I met the group at 8:15am on the southern tip of Manhattan (14 of us plus our guide Nicola) and we were shepherded onto the ferry without waiting, which gave us an awesome view of the NYC skyline from a specially chosen spot. Our guide opened the vast Registry Room by saying “Welcome to the real door to America,” and I learned striking facts like the Registry Room processed up to 6,000 immigrants per day and over 12,000,000 people passed through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954. Nicola—who amusingly said this was his 1,144th tour—was a wealth of information and dropped memorable details I’d never heard before: the Statue of Liberty was once considered for Battery Park and Central Park before being placed on Liberty Island so it wouldn’t be dwarfed by Manhattan’s future skyline; when the statue arrived from France in 1885 they still had to scramble to fund and design a pedestal (they chose the architect of the Metropolitan Museum of Art); and Ellis Island not only registered immigrants but screened them for disease with only a couple of doctors on staff at a time. After about 20 minutes on the ferry and a guided stroll around Liberty Island you get roughly 40 minutes on your own to visit the Statue of Liberty Museum, grab a coffee or bite in the cafeteria, and browse the gift shop. For me the tour was the perfect primer on immigration history and the statue itself—the statue appears to be marching toward the future—and while you can DIY for the price of admission ($31.50 USD), the deeper knowledge and context the guide provides made the Take Walks tour invaluable and well worth the extra cost; practical tips I’d give are to wear comfortable footwear (it’s at least a 4-hour outing), check the weather, avoid weekends if you can, and ask lots of questions because the guide is a real resource." - Matthew Kepnes

I had such a fantastic time on the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island tour, and that’s thanks to our incredible guide, Dan. He was knowledgeable, engaging, and full of energy from start to finish. What stood out the most was how he brought history to life—sharing stories and insights in such a fun, memorable way. Dan wasn’t just informative, he was also entertaining and made sure everyone felt included and comfortable throughout the tour. I left with not only great memories but also a deeper appreciation for these historic landmarks. Truly an unforgettable experience, and I can’t recommend Dan enough!

Atrocious customer service. I understand that returns/refunds are complicated with this type event. However, we had a sick child that could not travel. I contacted customer service, and never received a response. Life happens, and there should be protocols for people to receive refunds. If we ever do make it back to NYC, we will definitely not be using this company. Nor will we be recommending this service to our friends traveling to the area.

An incredible view into our past. Worth the time and money. Great for the entire family. Here's something you need to know, if you plan to walk up the stairs inside the statue of liberty you cannot buy tickets for that at any ticket booth you must schedule that in advance online! We found that out dissapointingly the hard way and we did not get the chance to do it. Maybe next year. I hope this helps. Enjoy yourselves.

Great monument. While I was there a bald man in a green shirt was levitating until he fell after a black man was talking to him. I left right after that but on my way out some robotnik fox was there yelling so loud. Besides the blood curdling screaming fox it was a great place

Great trip to see the Statue of Liberty. If you want to go into the pedestal of the statue, you have to book it ahead of time. It costs around $18 per person. It does get crowded but if you book ahead of time, you will have a definite reservation. Which is a good thing. Lots of history. Take the kids.
